Green/Gray Status Bars - Nexus S General

I posted the other day about me losing my "google" connection (the Bars and the 3G indicator being green) well After the new update I have yet to lose this connection. Has anyone else notice this. I havent seen anymore complaints or anything so I thought I would just check to see if everyone agreed with me.

I've applied the update, but I still get periods of grey bars instead of green. I can still do network things like surf the web, though, even when grey.

[Q] Full bars w/ 3g but they are grey?

So i was driving today and noticed my map was not updating. I looked at the connection and saw 3G but it was grey. Full bars and even went from 4 to 5 a couple of times....
I turned on airplane mode and turned it off and then i got the same thing but green and all was well.... What causes this? Does the grey bars mean signal but cant connect?

Means that its not connected to the data network. Green does. Same with wifi.
Also something else I noticed ... when on a call I can browse and talk at the same time when on 3G, but not with edge.

I was able to do that on my N1, havent been on the phone enough to try.. I still need to set up my BTHS with my NS...
Thats my next challenge, resetting the Jawbone Icon... ugh... I know its plug in holding power button thing, but I can never get it to work.. .
I remember seeing a video which said the 3g is green only when the phone picks up google voice. Power phone on the 3g bar is white once it detects g/v its green.
The talk and web browse will stop once you loose 3g connection

This is correct. The EDGE network cannot handle data and phone at the same time. Neither can Verizon or Sprint, until they go to LTE.

Signal bars and 3G indicator

I have a question, Some times my Signal bars and 3G indicator are green and all works well. Other times they are Gray and things start happening, for example it keeps telling me it cannot authorize Google Talk. I can still connect to the internet and everything but just not sure why the Google Talk thing stops working.
This also happens when I am on WiFi in my house. Some times it will be green and other times it will be gray.
Any advice would be helpful
Thanks

i believe that they are green when they are connected to google services i was reading about it on the forum the other night.
i am sure thats the reason, if not then someone please correct me as i pick mine up tomorrow
I'm having this problem too. Mostly when switching from 3g to 2g. I believe what is happening is the data is dropping out. When data/wifi are green you are connected and all is well. The grey means it is not working. I cant figure out why I have the problem switching between 2g AND 3g. That is bugging the crap outta me. My Vibrant does it with no problems, the Nexus s not so much. Dont know if this is related only to gingerbread or the phone. Usually a reboot takes care of this, and a reboot doesnt take long on the Nexus S. But like the girlfriend says, "all that money for this phone and it doesnt work right?"
Yea mine were all grey until I added my google account info and synced up. Now they seem to be perm green.

I dont know if I agree with that. On my device when its grey it doesnt even connect to a web page or anything that uses data. This is just my observation.

Thanks stevo.
I was under the impression they were green when a connection was active, gray when idle. Don't have an S yet though, so can't confirm, but I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere (probably on here).

I can still connect when grey...

[Q] Nexus 4 Signal Strength... Antenna Firmware Radio Problem? anyone else?

I have Straight Talk AT&T, and so far my experience has been mixed. Sometimes I get full reception and generally awesome speeds (coming from Sprint's slow ass network), other times I get absolutely no service, sometimes it randomly jumps into roaming and i can't get data.. and it stays 'stuck' in roaming mode.. I have to turn airplane mode on/off to fix it.
This all happens without my leaving my desk.
Apparently it isn't limited to Straight Talk AT&T though http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2038963 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037780
What's going on.. Am I part of a small group, or is this a larger issue..
OpenSignal Screenshots..

Notice the jump in bars between the two screenshots
same. hopefully they fix all these issues with a new radio. and also losing data while on a phone call!!!
Weird...on mine the bars go all the way down but when i do internet test i still get high connection. Also my internet works fine. Usually bars go down when i hold phone from top right.

sometimes I lose all bars and am still talking on the phone. so strength meter is off and doesn't mean much at this point.
Mine goes all over the place with ST ATT just sitting it on a table
well hows att reception in your area in general? mines pretty steady as far as 1 bar give or take. but theres sometimes I will sit at zero bars all together and still have service. I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as your able to make and receive phone calls etc

So it's been determined that it's not a hardware problem?
well its still early to tell. the phone is still very new so they have plenty of time to tweak the radio and fix bugs. lets hope its not some kind of weak radio hardware issue.
I've been having these as well. Quite annoying, but the data connection still pulls data and works. I've requested an RMA device and should be here tomorrow. Going to test with that, if it's the same then I'd keep this one I already have. Sometimes even if I have full service 5 bars, data will not work. The H will still be on stop of the signal bars, but it won't download/update any data, if I'm using any apps, it'll just hang.

What is the process for going about getting a replacement... and keep us posted on whether or not you see any changes..
let us know If the replacement is better. which I don't think so. but if your on original 4.2 with older baseband stay there. don't update and play with the data then. see if its good. then when satisfied update and see if the same problems arise then you know its software bugs

My N4 pretty much does the exact same thing. Actually, I'm on my replacement phone and it does the same thing as my first one.
which makes me believe its a software bug. or hardware fault. i'm having some faith in software lol :good:
I sure hope it's a software issue, because my connection really sucks. It drops out constantly, but never dropped out a single time on my Backflip during normal hours (only 2 times around midnight during server maintenance or something)
Do you think I should try T-Mobile and see if my issues are resolved..
I just discovered this phone info settings, via *#*#464 or whatever it was.. Is there a particular setting it should be on, not WCDMA Preferred?
I'm having the same problem: the signal strength is very erratic. I'm on Rogers in Canada, which is same frequencies as AT&T.
I've never seen such erratic signal strength before.
On the other hand, though I haven't had it very long and haven't put it through its paces, I haven't noticed any significant signal issues, like dropped calls. So, I don't want to jump to any conclusions that what I'm observing is actually a problem.
Does anyone know of an app that tests the quality of my data connection? I know everyone uses speedtest.net but that just tests burst speed and I'd like something that will test the consistency of my connection too.
same problem
I'm having the same difficulty. Signal can be at 3 bars then all of a sudden goes to 0 bars.
Has anyone determined if this is a software or hardware fault? Any solutions?
Thanks

Same exact behavior I'm seeing. I hope this is a software issue.

Google Now not working

I am on Virgin Mobile and this morning I appear to have lost Google Now.
I have a full HSPA+ connection and can receive emails and google play but cannot do any web searches.
Also my signal bar is grey instead of blue.
Ideas anyone?

Have you restarted the phone at all? I had this problem the other day, showed I had full service but couldn't do anything on the internet, and the signal bars were gray. I restarted and it fixed itself.

Yep tried it several times
Not sure what is going on.
Eventually come back and then my phone just randomly asked for my SIM PIN.
I guess it may be an issue with the network as everything seems a bit slow.

No Data (Grayed Signal Bars)

I'm on T-Mobile and have read some threads on here about the same issue. Some reported it was an outage, but it happens to be kind of often for me to think it's just an outage. Basically, I can still see the H above the signal bars, but instead of it being blue like it would be when I have data, it's all gray. I can't use any internet when this happens and no matter what I do, I can't fix it. Its kind of annoying. I am completely stock. Anybody experience the same issue?
This happens to me but I have never noticed an inability to use Internet. I have always thought it just meant a slightly weaker or lower band signal or something along that general idea. I am probably totally wrong however.

The grey bars indicates that you are currently not connected to Google Play Services..
try on/off airplane mode..or rebooting.
I've tried both. I still can't connect to FB, check my email, or use my browser in any way. I just tried to reset my APN to default with hopes of something being fixed, but still the same problem. I experienced this issue a lot more when I was on 4.2.2, but since I upgraded to 4.3.. it happened less until today. It's been like 2 hours and I'm still data-less..
call tmobile. that sounds like a your local tmobile issue.
Did you flash custom ROM from 4.2.2 ?

Did you flash custom ROM from 4.2.2 ? In that case you should update your radios to the one which supported by 4.3.
^^ Nope, I am completely stock.
