[Q] A complete beginner to Android - Nexus S - Nexus S General

Hi,
Please excuse me for being a n00b and my lack of knowledge about the Android OS but I just brought the Nexus S today (my first smart phone) and I'm after confirmation from someone that I actually brought an "unlocked" Nexus S.
I'm from Australia, visiting the States and I brought the Nexus today. My plan settings from home was set to roaming and I could connect to ATT mobile with my old phone, however when I placed my sim card into the Nexus, I'm not sure if I'm connecting to a network. (I haven't tried calling anyone cause I don't know anyone here and I don't want to rack up a massive phone bill for international calls.)
Under settings, I can see T-mobile and ATT as networks and when I click on one of them, I get the message that it is "Registered on network", however I can't seem to see the usual carrier logo on any of my home pages...so am I connected ?
The receipt from Best Buy said that I brought a phone without a plan but there was a T-mobile sim card in the box it came with, so did the employee give me the wrong one ?
Apologies for the long rant and thanks in advance !
Cheers,
Edit*
Oh yea I should include that I'm not connected to any wifi or any data connection hence all my home pages are saying that I can't connect to anything.. but still, shouldnt the network logo show up ?

No, they gave you the right one...... and also, you are connected.
All boxes come with a tmo sim in there.... the only thing I didn't like that was missing was the different earphone gum size (i'm a small sized and it only comes with a medium one, which means it falls off =( ,,,sucks ) besides that ..............I LOVE MY PHONE!!

Before you left Australia, did you call your carrier and had international roaming activated? On most networks, without international roaming on, you won't get a signal.

Unable to make or receive calls

I wonder if anyone can help with a fault on my M3100. So far I've searched this website for answers with no luck. I have Hard Reset the phone, upgraded the Radio, all without any luck.
About 6 days ago my M3100 suddenly stopped being able to make or receive calls. Whenever I try to dial out the call drops out before being established, and if I try to call in to the phone the caller receives a series of beeps.
At first it seems to be a SIM problem, but the Vodaphone SIM is fine in any other phone. If I put my Orange SIM in the phone it just comes up as "No Service".
I'm at the end of the line in what to do and it doesn't seems to make any sense.
Any comments, suggestions, advice or help very much appreciated.
..... Further symptom details:
I can send and receive text message with my Vodaphone SIM installed and access WiFi and GPRS networks. Orange SIM won't connect at all! Both SIMS work fine in a standard phone ! Only clue I can think of here is that the Vodaphone SIM is UMPTS and GSM where the Orange is GSM only. The spare phone I tested them in was GSM only.
Could the GSM part of the M3100 be stuffed ?
I'm stumped for the time being!! It doesn't seem to make any logical sense. Maybe any of you who know the in's and out's of how the device communicates might find some clues in that...
Heeeeelp !
More details..
I've just added a few more details on the symtoms.. maybe the few extra clues might yeild some thoughts from someone !
Have you checked the band selection in Settings > Phone?
Is it possible that the phone could have become blacklisted? How long have you had it? How did you buy it? (This is probably NOT it, since the text still works.)
Have you tried a tweaker to enable HSPDA?
Had the phone for over 12 months so Blacklisted shouldn't be the issue. I've tried all the band selections including Auto but no luck.
Haven't tried the Tweaker... do you have any details on that...
Up until it suddenly stopped working it worked on all networks..
Another possible clue is that I was "Roaming" in France for a month and it was there that I made my last successful call. I have UK SIMS... I have an Australian SIM which I'll try now to see if that makes any difference..
Tried an Australian SIM roaming in the UK ! The service connects on two available networks,Vodaphone and TMobile but not on Orange and O2 (like with the Orange UK SIM). Same fault as the before with the networks it will connect to.
This seems to eliminate the SIM or Network being the fault and isolate the fault to the Device...
probably not the issues, but worth a try?
I live in a very strong 3G + HSPDA ares, but cant make or recieve anycalls tho texts work on T-mobile, i need to have my phone in 2G mode, and calls work fine???
If i leave my house and go a few miles 3G works as it should able to call and recieve etc!
Can't seem to work out how to force the phone onto 2G or 3G ... if anyone can advise I'll give that a try!
I have had very similar problems to this.
Please see my post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=325149
I do think this is some sort of network problem as after I posted the issues in the thread above, I left home and travelled about 6 miles and the signal came back and the phone worked fine.
Today, I have been able to make and receice calls but all of a sudden I got cut off from a call then could not make or receive calls (incoming goes straight to voicemail).
I can however use my Orange SIM without problem and both Vodafone and Orange SIMs work fine in other phones.

You can also go into Settings > Phone > Band.
If the band tab does not appear (to the right of the network tab), then you may need to do a registry tweak.
From the very helpful wiki:
Enable/Disable GSM/UMTS Band Selection
Cingular kindly disables anything useful about the network on the 8525. To enable the Band Selection Tab on your Phone settings page, set the following:
[\HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\]
"ShowUMTSBandPage"=dword:00000001
To disable, simply clear the value to 0:
[\HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\]
"ShowUMTSBandPage"=dword:00000000

Have travelled outside England again this week and... well the phone works fine roaming on my UK Vodaphone SIM. Seems very ODD.. only thing I can put any logic to is a problem with the GSM part of the phone. It's working here in Stockholm on the 3G network no problem.
Anyone advise how I force the phone to be on GSM and 3G so I can test this theory. The BAND settings under SETTINGS>PHONE don't seem to give you this control over how it connects..
Hey i got the same problem anyone solved it yet!
Hi Sunnyb1
Since my last post I returned to England where the phone was useless. No SIM cards would work, some would not register at all but my Vodaphone SIM seemed to register but as before it would not receive calls, nor could I make calls out.
Now I'm in Australia with an Australian SIM card. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL !!
The phone works just fine !!
It's a mystery indeed...
Without any knowledge of the ins & Outs of how a SIM card / Network / and the phone work together it's impossible for me to arrive at any conclusive logic.
Hopefully someone might stand up to the plate and offer some explanation !
Anyone from HTC out there ??????

I got the phone and it was working perfectly on Orange then i tried unlocking it and ever since it has come up with "NO Service" like you everytime i put a Orange Sim in the phone it does not show up.. but when i put a Vodafone sim it works perfectly i tried reflashing the radio's many times
I unlocked this particular phone 6months before this problem showed up so I don't think the Unlock on it's own is the cause. What's particularly baffling is that a SIM may not work with the phone in one country.. but in another it works fine.
..... another country that is !
Hey Steve i have found out what the problem is after hours of research
I found this of another website
Orange & O2:
If you place an active orange or
O2 sim into a blacklisted handset you
phone will not show any signal strength
at all! If the handset is a Nokia then a
"SIM card registration failed" message
will also be displayed. If your handset is an
Ericsson then an "Invalid Mobile" message
will be displayed. For most other manufacturers
the handset will simply show no signal!
Vodafone & T-Mobile
If you place an active Vodafone or T-Mobile sim into a blacklisted handset, the phone will appear to function perfectly UNTIL you try to make an outgoing call. When you try to call out from the handset you will hear a sequence of beeps and then the call will be dropped!!
........
This means the handset you got is stolen or someone has blacklisted it ... i got mine of EBAY! and reading that i figured that it is stolen
It wont work in the UK but it will work everywhere else in the world
Mmmm... that's interesting Sunnyb1. If my phone is blacklisted then happened in JULY this year which was 8 months after I bought the phone. I bought the phone legit .
Can anyone advise what the "Blacklisting" process is.. I assume its done by using the IMEI number.
Who is the rightful owner of a handset and can any phone be blacklisted by anyone, and possibly by mistake ?
Would unlocking the phone from Orange cause a phone to be blacklisted ??
How can you "Un-blacklist" a phone.
Answered my own question here......
This website seems to have the answers
http://www.unlockme.co.uk/blacklist.html
OK... still on this thread. Can anyone advise how you find out which network in the UK has blocked your an IMEI number. I gather any of the UK networks can block any IMEI and it's not unknown for errors to be made. But only the network that blocks the IMEI can Unblock it.
Thought I'd post this before waiting forever for some call centre dimwit to give me the runaround.
Thanks...

No SE X1 in ATT acct Management!

For those of you using ATT in the US. I went to my acct management to mess around with my plans when I discovered that my default device had been switched to a moto Q. I chose the "this is not my device" option but the Xperia is not on the list.
Are there any workarounds. The reason this is important is that I am unable to change my data plan, plus a lot of features and options that used to show up when I had my Fuze are gone.

Could you please elaborate. There is no HTC kovsky in the list of possible devices. The only HTC item is "Fuze black".
I had the same problem. I called AT&T to give them my imei number and to change my data plan and The lady kept insisting that I was using a Motorola Q. I insisted that I was not and that I was holding my x1 in my hand. She said she did an imei search and that I was wrong and kept insisting my phone was a Q! I finally just hung up. My phone under my acct. management page stills shows as a Q.
if att does not sell the xperia, i don't think that they would have it on their devices list.
Isn't that a good thing that you can go for the cheaper $15 unlimited data plan?
Couldn't u just pop ur sim in an old regular phone, change the plan and then pop the sim back into the xperia?
did you get a 3g sim card for your x1? thats what the lady told me to do because i initially wasnt getting texts nor internet.
for some reason, the lady i talked to was very helpful and was able to change all the settings on my plan - i just explained to her what kind of phone it was, smartphone with hsdpa?, so on and so on
hope this helps
The AT&T phone tool is garbage. Some of the promotional tools insists that the agent ties the IMEI number to the feature in order to add it to your account. It is ridiculous that the IMEI comes up as a different phone as an IMEI supposedly represents the DNA of the phone. Albeit the X1i is not a supported AT&T phone it should not populate as any other phone in their system at all. Maybe this is AT&Ts sly way to squeeze out any users using non-supported handsets. We already know they are capable of taking that route seeing how the iPhone conditions panned out.
AT&T Idiots
You can't call them to get any help. They go only on the IMEI # now, because they send you packets via sms/mms for the specific phone that comes up with that number. This way there is no knowledge needed of how to actually walk someone through settings. Obviously they don' t offer the X1 so they have any sort of support for it. I went through ten minutes of telling some woman it wasn't a razor! I just went to the store and told the guy I have a fuze and I wanted off my Iphone plan. He didn't even look at the phone and that was that.
IMEIs went from having the first 6 as an identfier to the first 8. This means that some IMEI lookup still pick up old phones.
Suppose the only trick if ATT aren't helping is to borrow a phone which can be identified that has similar features and to stick your SIM in it.

What are you trying to do with the AT&T website and within the X1A, what do you want access to?
If you use a lower end phone, you can get your Data plan for only $15 (medianet). Fuze is a smartphone = $30. Either way, you will get 3G and HSDPA.

LOL! I'm not trying to change anything. I'm fine with my plan. I was just curious as to why my phone was being classified as a Moto Q and wondered if anyone else had the same issue.
When I was with T-Mobile, their database would show my phone even if it wasnt offered by T-Mob.

need help mobile provider messing me about

basically their network server has detected ive switched from my contract phone (nokia e71) to an "unsuported" 2g phone. so how it went was for the first week, 3g internet worked fine on my hd2 then the server decided my phone was only a 2g phone and decided to ensure compatability with my phone it needed to switch off 3g access to my phone. after a call to my operator (3) they are basically unwilling to do anything about it because its not on their list of approved phones.
My question is, is it possible to change how the device id is reported to the operator?

It's most likely tied in to the IMEI, so probably not.
That's tight as hell! Can't see how they can do that unless they feel they're 'protecting' their network
not good news at all really and yea its pretty crap of them to have a system that works like that. the "tech" guy said i was really lucky to have a non 3 phone that worked on 3g and that the server had picked it up and disabled 3g. asked if he could change the setting and all he said was ohh we cant do that youll need to put sim card in a 3 phone!

Tell them your 3-phone is being repaired and you will be using the HD2 in the meantime. If they do not assist cancel or refuse to pay your contract. If you're not getting access to the services you're paying for, I'd say they're in breach of the contract anyway.

Since when was an HD2 a 2g phone?
Switch back and get the 3G access and then use the HD2 in 3G mode. Or am I missing something?
I use 4 different phones (three of them so called "unsupported" phones) and two different internet modems on my 3 service and I have no such problem.
Why would they want to deny you the service that they have contracted with you to provide and for which you are paying?
It doesn't make sense!

NOOB - T-Mobile UK HD2 unlocked - no O2 connection..

Hi guys.
Really sorry about this but I am at the end of my tether with this!
I run my own IT support company and one of the things I do most is Blackberry and iPhone Exchange email syncing. While both of those work brilliantly, I have had users having loads of issues getting their Windows Mobile devices working easily. Luckliy only one or 2 have these devices but more are asking....
I resorted to retiring my Bold 9000 and got a brand new sealed HD2 on the UK T-Mobile network today. First thing I did was get a sim unlock code and that went through first time (using my working o2 SIM from my BB). However, I couldn't make calls so after I spoke to o2 I got in to the Phone, Network settings and with the Network selection on auto, the preferred networks list was blank. Clicking the preferred networks button brings up the list of preferred networks, ticked o2 - UK and ok'd it. Goes back to main network screen and still blank. Clicking Find Network then brings up cannot register on selected network.
Changing automatic network selection to manual, selecting )2 - UK and ok'ing that brings up the same 'cannot register on selected network error. So, after coming here, I stuck on the HSPL 1.42, then upgraded to RUU_Leo_HTC_WWE_1.48.405.2_Radio_Signed_15.28.50.07U_2.05.51.05_2_Ship
That went on fine and after wiping to factory to make sure I sent through the set up. Same errors and still can't make receive calls.
Stuck on the 2.08 hspl for the hell of it then upgraded to RUU_Leo_HTC_WWE_1.66.405.2_Radio_Signed_15.30.50.07U_2.06.51.07_Ship
Guess what? Exact same problems! I spoke to o2 support and they were pretty useless. Explained that it was sim unlocked and on a generic firmware. They said that T-Mobile do something weird with the HTC and I should try calling HTC tech support, who are now closed...... I am not sure HTC will be of any help anyway as I can't exactly go telling them I have stuck on the HSPL and a non-approved firmware for what was the originall carrier!
Help please anybody?? I have googled and googled but haven't found anyone with the same problem, I might be being blind. BTW, what I guess is the antenna icon has an exclamation next to it
Thanks,
Nick
Quick update. Housemate got back so I nicked the Vodafone UK sim from his iPhone and stuck that in the HD2. Same problem, won't register on Vodafone either. Anyone?
Got annoyed. changed the SPL back to the standard 1.42. Installed the latest T-Mobile official firmware. Same problems. Do I have the only HD2 ever to be doing this? . I don't have a T-Mobile sim to hand and the nearest store is miles away sadly.
Does your phone app not work at all ?
How do you know unlock code worked ? so far every sim you tried has failed.
Where did you get the unlocking code from ?
How did you use it ? meaning how did you input it ?
Verdict so far, if a t-mobile sim card works then unlock was a fail !
Ok referring to your network selection, for the UK, you should have it set to Automatic, it will then use the network associated with your sim.
referring to your call problem, does the phone still work with the original t-mobile sim?
if so it sounds like your unlock code didnt work.
if your phone no longer works with the original t-mobile, I should think something has gone wrong with the radio software you have installed on the phone. Try going back to the stock htc/radio rom. If that doesnt work then the phone probably needs to go back to t-mobile for repair, at this point you tell them "it just stopped working"
have you tried to run the connection setup wizard?
settings - menu - all settings - connections - connection setup
if there isn't one, connectionsetup is available as a cab.
Hi guys. It was a brand neww, sealed box HD2, but from T-Mobile. No SIM with it at all or I would have been trying that too of course .
Regarding how I unlocked it. I paid an ebay seller to give me an unlock code. When I fist put on 02 SIM in the phone it wafffled on about being network locked basically and had a field to enter the unlock code. Entered the code given to me via the Ebay unlocker and never got that message again on the screen. Is that wrong somehow?
Manual network, auto network, selecting carrier etc all of them make no difference. I am off out now but have found a local store with PAYG T-Mobile sims in stock so will grab 1 later today and see what happens then.
Will update/bore you all later!
Cheers,
Nick
Right, case closed. I got the T-Mobile sim and stuck it in. Showed up with T-Mobile on the scren and a good strength signal. Tried to make a call, dropped back to the home screen almost straight away. I had full data access though. Spoke to T-Mobile who informed me that my brand new, sealed box HD2 was blacklisted and I could do nothing with it!
Vodafone and O2 just flat out don't let you register the handset on their network if is it blacklisted it would seem.
Contacted the seller and he has arranged a refund, but the refund is showing as 'pending' so I am not going to return the phone until I see it physically in my account.
I have to be honest and say that this is actually a good thing as despite HTC doing all they can to make the Win 6.5 on there look less dog-like, the overall UI is still pretty awful. Now,this phone with Android 2.1 on it might be a dfferent matter! Back on my Bold 9000 for now......
Cheers,
Nick.
I am sorry to hear about that, looks like to you got hit by some sort of scam, probably resealed a second hand or refurbished unit into an original box and sold it as new.
regarding the UI of the htc devices, I am not really sure why you think this, htc hd2 uses htc sense which is the same ui as on the android htc phones. The only windows mobile thing you should really see is the start menu which has been praised as being a very good replacement for the old start menu. even all the settings windows are run through the htc sense ui so i am really not sure what you are complaining about :S
If you dislike the top bar/bottom soft buttons, there have been a lot of modifications to these in more recent hd2 roms, maybe you should to take a look at the roms section to see some pics.

[SOLVED] Total Wireless (Verizon MVNO) - New Phone / Same SIM

I am switching from my old Nexus 6 to a brand new Moto G5 Plus. I am with the carrier Total Wireless which is a Verizon MVNO. Their cellular service and pricing is excellent. Their CSRs are low functioning. What I want to know is if I can just pop out the SIM from my old phone and put it into my new one without any issues. They both take the same size SIM and they're both compatible with Verizon. I won't have to buy a new SIM card or anything like that, will I? I ask because a CSR told me that the SIM cannot be removed and is part of the phone so I would have to buy a new one. Yeah...I know. It was painful. I just left the chat. Thanks in advance for the help!

As long as sim is not locked then you should be able to put it in the g5+, log in to your total wireless account on WiFi and input your IMEI or MEID (which ever is longer) into your account for that SIM, and boom your rocking. You might not even have to do all that sometimes popping the SIM in just works.

Sorry I just assumed, not helpful I know that's just how it's been for me with other. Carriers. Sorry about to bad answer. Sounds like they must lock the SIM to the phone.

Well, I do appreciate the effort! That's more than I could find. When my new Moto G5 Plus comes in I'll pop my existing SIM in and go from there. I figure if it doesn't work I'll just play stupid, tell them my phone was working then all of a sudden it isn't and make them fix it. Worst comes to worst, I have to buy a new SIM for a dollar or whatever. Thanks again! I'll report back here with the conclusion
I bought a new unlocked phone for Total Wireless but it used a different SIM size. Once I put the new sim card in the new phone, I logged into my Total Wireless account online, clicked the upgrade to new device and went through the steps. Once I completed that I powered up the new device and it worked.
Hope this helps in some way.

Log into your account. It should be at the account options screen. If not, click on link to the left.
Once that comes up, click on view details. It should list your phone. Over to the right it should give you the option to upgrade the device.
If it doesn't then something is most likely wrong with the account and you'll need to get in touch with Customer Service.

Can you post a screenshot or something? Nothing you're saying is even remotely on this site. Are we talking about the same company?! Also, I just got a hold of them and now they are demanding I buy a new SIM card because apparently I can't transfer service to a new phone. That makes ZERO sense. Do you have to be UNDER a certain IQ to work for this company or what?!
So the verdict is in. With Total Wireless you CAN pop out the SIM from your old phone and put it into your new one BUT...there is an issue. The old phone's IMEI stays associated with the SIM you just put into your new phone. That will never be an issue should you just put the phone into the "old phone drawer" but it MAY become an issue if you sell or give away your phone to be used with Verizon or another Verizon MVNO. From what I gather, that IMEI will show as in use and not allow another user to register it with a new SIM. Will it matter if you go with AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc...? I'm unsure but from what I gather, I doubt it. The really dumb part about this whole thing is Total Wireless's unwillingness to just unregister the old IMEI from your current SIM and register a new one. From speaking to a Verizon representative this is totally possible but Total Wireless refuses to do it. Instead they demand you buy a new SIM card. I assume this is from complete ignorance as their CSRs are almost completely inept. It's the best "bang for your buck" company to go with when you want / need Verizon service but if you need help...may the force be with you. Put it this way...They didn't even know what an APN was and insisted it was only a single word long (not even the right word).
I have two Moto G5 Plus's that I bought from Best Buy on the same day at the same time. I checked both IMEIs about 2 months ago to see if they were compatible both where. Now that my auto for ATT Gophone got turned off in time bought the CDMA sim kit. I went online to activate. Total Wireless said one is compatible and one is not. I called customer support and talked to a supervisor still got same thing. Was told if the phone wasnt activated on VZW then it would be unable to work. I told her both have been on ATT since day one. WTF! So looks like I am staying with ATT.
