CyanogenMod 7 For Desire Z Video Demonstration - G2 and Desire Z General

Hi guys,
I came across this video posted here that shows CyaongenMod 7 RC-0 working on HTC Desire Z. According to the demonstrator in the video, there are no CyanogenMod settings (of course if it's RC-0, you wont have them), Camera not working and also Wi-Fi and GPS act stupid. I believe that its a raw compilation from CM git. What do you all think?

I think he's gonna call it CM 6.2 as 2.3 isn't really groundbreaking. Last update.zip I made from the source it had graphical glitches and no usb, gps, wifi, bluetooth, etc support
Sent from my HTC Vision using Gingerbread

Seconded. My guess is 6.2. Or maybe 6.3, to match up the version numbers..? Haha.

Cyanogen is going to make it 7.0, said so on his twitter

When you compile the gingerbread CM build from git, it says CM 7.0-RC0

i don't see many new things in gingerbread, even cyanogen doesn't use original launcher . Only some touch in gui..., no revolutionary interface...( i still remember google said, no custom launcher again in gingerbread )

LOL. Nope. CM7

Wish the whole video wasn't about showing what's broken though
After all the work done today, it's down to the camcorder and a minor GL glitch that causes Quadrant to crash. The camcorder is broken on every platform except for the Nexus S. I think it's fixable, and I have it partially working.

Oh yay! I haven't attempted to compile source since power went out (along with cell towers) and the power company won't have it fixed until xmas so I'm currently running off of generator =/ I tried doing a repo sync earlier but got impatient and will probably set it to run over night

What are the difference.
The first rumours about gingerbread talked about "great" changes...
I can't hardly "see" any changes.
I am wondering what the real changes are. Does it work faster? Does it has another feel? What does it do with the battery?
I was looking forward to gingerbread, but i am afraid it is going to be dissappointing.
(PS sorry for my ****ty english.)
BTW love the hard work of the cyanogenmod team.

From what I have seen there are a few kool things but I guess we will no when it comes out. I'm using virtuos 0.8.1 havnt used any other rom I'm thinking if cynogen gets gingerbread then I think I'm jumping ship. The rom I'm using now is nice and pretty but there is a lot of updates and bugs have to update or reset the phone way to often sorry evil and rmk

There are some seriously awesome things for developers to use, the biggest are the new native APIs that finally puts Android on par with iPhone for gaming. Other than the dark theme and SIP calling, all the good stuff in G is under the hood.

cheers cyanogen. its cool to see you still on xda after all this time.

Your forgetting about the EQ in the music app... I'm most excited about that =)
Earlier, I was most excited about smoother scrolling, but with virtuous and OCed to 1.4 ghz it's smooth as butter! I LOVE THIS PHONE

[Q] Might be getting a Shift

I have the Evo now but am giving that phone to my dad when I bring them onto my family plan and will be using his new contract to get a different phone. My question for you Shift owners is does the Shift use a GPL to control it's graphics (should be smother for scrolling if I'm not mistaken) instead of hardware control? Also I've heard numerous people say that the shift is a lot faster even though it's running a 800mhz processor instead of a 1ghz like the Evo. Keyboard doesn't really mean much to me as I will most likely be using the on screen more than the physical. Thank you all in advanced.

My dad has the original Evo and myself the Shift. It blows the Evo away in my opinion. The keyboard is great, the graphics amazing, the screen vivid, and the processor seems to be quite a bit faster. Not to mention the dev attention this phone is getting so far. We are only about, what, a couple months in and we already have MIUI, new sense, cm6, cm7, and an aosp gingerbread, and a 1.8ghz overclock, and an upcoming dual boot from myself. I don't see what phone is better on Sprint?(;

I will add thise too. I bought the shift over the evo for the 2nd gen snapdragon and new GPU. However, I use the keyboard a helluva lot more than I ever thought I would.

I didn't say it was stable, just that the rom IS available.
However, since I'm equipped with all things necessary to flash a rom, I have ran cm6, cm7 and evervolv each for at least a solid day. I'd also like to note that MY rom of choice is Evervolv.
Since you're so quick to mention stability, all three are having the same issues. MMS and Camera being the ones most users will notice.

Just to set this correct... Evervolv is not 'based' off of CM7, however there is quite a bit of source that is gathered from CyanogenMod. Most of this is hardware related and C/CPP that i havent even dabbled into just yet. The rest are features/coding that i thought i would like to learn how it was implemented and put it into evervolv and have tried my own work from there. Example: Rotary lockscreen.. this was pushed to CM6 a while back, i liked it and wondered how it was done... from there I coded it myself to work with the phone answering also (which at the time had not been done with CM.)
Thanks

That makes three of us. The keyboard literally had NOTHING to do with my upgrade.
Now I don't want a phone without one.
Ok, so I got the shift yesterday and have already rooted it and installed a custom rom with 1.51ghz kernel and so far I am very impressed with the speed and smoothness of this phone. Kb is actual worth it because it nice and rubberized and easy to type on. So which aosp rom is the best (most funtional) right now? I like sense but prefer aosp more of course because of speed. Also anyone working on a liquid acer port? Absolutely love that look. Thanks for all the responses btw.

so i'm thinking of getting this for the wife when her upgrade is up in April. One of her sticking points it that she likes the camera on my EVO and she's put off by the 5mp camera on the Shift. I explained to her that the MP was not that big of a deal that hardware/software make the biggest difference on picture quality. SO can any of you guys that came from the EVO compare the camera on the SHIFT vs EVO?

The camera honestly is not bad.
Then again, I do carry around an actual camera at times, but for the phone, the pictures are fine. I like the size (EVO might have been a little to big to carry around), I especially like having a physical keyboard (came from a BlackBerry Curve to the Shift), and I just overall love it. Got it rooted, set the clock speeds and have vastly improved my battery life.
It's all a matter of personal preference in the end though.
I would post a photo I've taken (of flowers) but I can't since I have to post more before I'm allowed to.

Is this the end at gingerbread?

Well guys i was thinking about it. Also thinking about other sense devices that may come with ICS and thinking about if it can run with a sense 3.5 on it or sense 4.0 or something. So I was thinking that eventually our devices cant be upped to the higher sense versions eventually. So I was wondering about the life of AOSP. When will our devices stop being able to run straight android?
When I say run I refer to the ability to be usable. None of this constant reboots or all to common issues, radio network, wifi drops, reboots etc.
I predict a year until our devices can not fully support the next sense version if 3.5 can be run reliably. I give straight Android till the next update. I am still unsure of how ICS will run on our devices very well but I do think it will be and will have the people from major AOSP makers/flavor teams out there getting it to work.
This update brings duel core in a year it will be quad core etc. and follow suit.
What are you peoples ideas? How long can our device stay breathing?
I have none of those problems with aosp?
Sense already should not be run on our phones because of the hog it is. I don't think Google will be outing all these phones next year.
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
That is why I think AOSP will be the only way to go further.
Our Devices Running sense are pretty much maxed out if we ever get 3.5 to run correctly.
I've been running cm7 nightlies exclusively for almost a year
Now and i think i only had rebooted with a really old nightly and the GPS issue that's now fixes with a driver flash. I don't know what could cause the issues you have. He'll I TRY to break my phone to make sure it'll run all the time. Still haven't really been able to do much more than slow it down massively for a few minutes.
I love how sense 3.0 looks but not how piggishly fat it is

Sense is great I love it how it feels the keyboard the widgets etc. It's just I realize our hardware is well outdated now. I think ics will run fine but a port of a ics sense ROM might be a bit much. If.It's got Sie 3.5 it might run but sense 4.0 won't run great i can just tell.
I tried aosp way back when but like sense ink if ics brags a lot of functionality and a reasons o glad aosp I might do that but till then sense it is.

Not sure what others are doing for the EVO but as soon as ics hits ill be working on it for the EVO. Remember salvagemod was one of the first gb Rome for the EVO. I believe our phones can run the future updates for android its the sense part that I think will limit our ability to keep progressing with sense. And I appreciate the developers who constantly work on our devices and do donate to them.
All things aside Android doesn't take many system resources but sense can be a pain to get to work correctly if our devices can handle sense 4.0....
Maybe a hyrbid but my theory is sense 4.0 + 3.5 hybrid is the end of sense for us. maybe a update beyond ICS as well. maybe a 2.4-2.5

I agree. Sense has some great widgets and integration into parts of the system like the gallery app with Facebook and flickr. I have run AOSP ROMs, some for quite a while (and I'm a bit of a flashahaulic) they run super smooth and they are quite stable now as well, but I always try different sense ROMs when I see then posted so I can try to get the best of both worlds.
Currently I'm running Salvage-Mod-Sense which is a 2.1 port from Barnacles. It's the best I've found for sense ROMs that includes some minor features from Sense 3.x (ie. lock screen, camera app) but for the most part is stock sense 2.1 which runs beautifully on my phone. This with the chop suey SBC kernel gives me great battery life and all the best of sense. So much faster than Synergy or Kingdom because it leaves out all the Sense 3.x stuff.
All this rambling on my part comes to this, I agree that ICS will be awesome on our phones, but I doubt a sense based version will be feasible. Sense 3.x already runs terrible on our devices (at least in my experience, but maybe I'm just a performance whore, lol).
The new Sense 3.5 ROMs are exciting and running smoothly as well. I believe if there is a way to remove all the bloat and strip the ROMs down these devices can go for another 2yrs with decent performance.

My problem with change

I hate change. So, since I have worked on specializing NY CM7 for just me, then ics coming out, makes it hard for me to want to go to it. I love my setup as well as my performance here on gingerbread. But, I have pulled myself to download oICSv41 as well as the GLaDOS kernel. Is there any big bugs with v41 I should know about..? As well as with GLaDOS. I know of the reboot problem, but it sounds like its just people using set CPU. And if I do have problems ill just go to mathkids trusty matr1x kernel that I've been using since 6.0. Although none of you will provably care I just felt the need to say this, thanks guys

I hate change too... I've flashed and tried just about every ICS rom and kernel out right now, but still find myself nandroiding back to my latest GB MIUI setup. Not once did I get excited about ICS coming out... honestly I don't see what all the hype is about. It took a year to get GB to what it is today, so I wonder what ICS will be a year from now.

Idk bout you guys but I'm not afraid to try new things, have fun living in the past cavemen lol. But things about ics right know are all known issues that Google already knows about. Bad battery life due to android os keeping the phone awake, home screen lag which gets resolved by using either kernels you mentioned and depending on the from you settle on, incoming mms doesn't work but outgoing does. Other than that, its bad ass and something new.

I tried ICS for a day, straight back to GB for me, it seemed like a step backward for me coming from MV roms.
Matr1x v13.0
(Oc 1300/200 smartassv2 and live Oc 105% raise voltages by 15)
Nexusbeam 4.0.1
Perfect combination. Everything works, no complaints.
Quadrant scores of 3434, which is respectable.
ICS is the way to go!
Hope this helps you decide.
Even though I finally have a decently running ICS ROM.. I'm still disappointed by ICS. I think a lot of it had to do with the very large overhyping it got.. I mean we all thought our phones would be ****ting rainbows and unicorns, and didn't, not even close. It's a cosmetic re-design with annoying hardware accelerated web browsing..
The accelerated web browsing is so poorly implemented one of the first features I'd love to see in a ROM is the ability to turn it off. I'm much rather put up with the occasional "hitching" while scrolling instead of the "Scroll, scroll scroll, wait for it to render and make the blur go away" craptacular experience it is now.

And that's the story with anything new that comes out. Everyone hears about something new and runs with it and praises it to the heavens and back without knowing anything about it (true hands on experience). Its always best to form your own opinion on things and not let hype or anything like that to get in your way of judging something.

I dunno, i look at GB now and it look ugly and clunky. Stock ICS is running just as fast (or faster) and stable as stock GB did for me. I don't even have the desire to play with custom ROMs and kernels anymore, ICS is so close to perfection for my needs. Unless CM9 offers something really great, I'm sticking with stock ICS.

Comparisons between GB and ICS...What is your overall opinion so far?

Hey guys.
Must say for early stages ICS looks pretty sweet. Looking forward to the stable version by Codeworkx and team.
My opinion though is that i still find Gingerbread pretty solid and has all the features i need still. Yes ICS is still in early stages. But there are still few features that i can not leave without just yet. And plus battery life of course is a major issue for me so when kernel sources are released i am sure we shall see an influx of kernels to tackle the problem as it was in the early days of Gingerbread on our gorgeous phones.
Question here is...Do you guys find it worth the jump even on early stages or are you sticking with Gingerbread as it is still stable and you have all the features you can ask for till the gorgeous CM9 gets more stable? Also what would you like from Gingerbread to be on ICS
Thanks
The problem is I've already made the jump much earlier, and it's now unacceptable going back to GB..

I also made the jump but something made me come back to GB..I think it is still because the build is still in early stages and bugs and errors occur..Plus having the voodoo app now by Supercurio kinda makes me hold up a bit longer. Yes i know that is not a good enough reason but also battery life is a major one for me...
What i like to know in the new build of CM9 is it as smooth as people say it is when scrolling?

Well I'm most likely the wrong person to answer that, having come from the original SGS since only the last 2 days. And no, I don't think that it's not a good enough reason to revert to GB for Voodoo LOUDER when I'm actually giving it a fair thought of going back to the SGS1 for Voodoo Sound...

Don't worry, there are plenty of people like you and me giggling at the various topics of stuttering paid alternative launchers, and buggy custom AOSP roms, but they are mostly silent.
I think its great they are there, because it can lead to new insights, but so far for me stock + TW + a mild Jkay-theme hit the sweet spot for almost everything this phone can do for me.
Opinion its a leaked test rom and not ICS release who knows what will change .

Ive been trying out the cm9 alpha for a while now and am liking it. Got it setup virtually the same as my KK5 daily.
With cm9 I don't need voodoo louder and my a2dp streaming sounds better.
But.....
I could easily go back to KK5 odexed which I have setup the way I like it. Jkay mods, frozen apps, voodoo louder, etc.
I use go launcher ex, go sms pro and poweramp on both so mostly my user interface is the same.
Found since sgs1 that I like the 3rd party apps more than stock. Thats the beauty of android I guess.

Highly recommend it! I found I don't need as many 3rd party apps, don't use widget locker or go launcher or go contacts etc anymore, the only one I use now is go SMS pro.

I started using CM9 since the first build, which was very buggy, but its been my daily driver since then and I love it now, stable enough for everyday use (amazing for an alpha) and I already find it better than CM7, I can't go back to GB after updating lol, love the new UI, the only time I ran into a problem was when I wanted to see football highlights last night but can't watch the video =D other that tho I love ICS, can't wait for a full and stable release! Highly recommend it! I found I don't need as many 3rd party apps, don't use widget locker or go launcher or go contacts etc anymore, the only one I use now is go SMS pro.

Same here. ICS is very good and I urge all to give CM9 a try. Of course we cannot mod, theme etc.. at this stage but to be frank there is no need to. Great sensible UI coupled with a very smooth and snappy scrolling and other animations makes it a perfect ROM for a common user. If you are too much into theming, tweaking etc.. stay away from CM9 at the moment until a stable one comes out.
Not much of a battery drain also. Maybe 10% more than stock GB.
ICS KP8
CM9
No thanks no advantage over what i have at present .
Yes to supposed specs when ICS is actually released .

I tested for 2 days the ICS and I must say that the samsung team it's on the good way. ICS will be a wonderful OS to run on SGS2. They still have a lot of bugs to fix, but there are just leaks. We must wait for some official releases.
At the moment you can use ICS just to explore some of the goodies that will be present in the future for our phones. We will have to keep gingerbread for a while
Personally, I want to see the weather on lockscreen fully implemented in the next builds
theres no real ICS for SGS2 right? How could we compare?
we still need to go through 2.3.7 am i right?
No, i find cm7 better than cm9 for now
Personally I don't find ICS the revolutionary change that some people were hyping around. It's an improvement, but not super.
And +1 to the people who mentioned the media part. Once it's fixed I might go to CM9.
And frankly I don't find Trebechet launcher on CM9 smoother than Touchwiz on Gingerboard :/

I am totally agree with Dzel.
Since ICS alpha(not even beta) version. its no good to compare stable GB version.
Again CM9 is much better than CM7.
I am running cm9 as my daily now as most remaining issues are not so important.
I was before on cm7 with Siyah kernel, and honestly, everything was really running smooth. I do not see any big improvment in ICS, and in that point, I am a litle disapointed.
I will stick to cm9 as ICs is now the developped OS, but I was waiting for more big changes from Google.
A litle bit like diff between OSX 10.3, .4, .5 etc etc. No real big changes.

Smoothness ICS

It seems like the biggest struggle with AOSP ICS is the smoothness.
I just got a chance to play with a GNexus for a while, and IT is supper laggy and stuttery, what the H is google doing?
What happened to gpu rendering and android finally "getting it right?"
Anyway, be understanding of our devs, because it looks like our AOSP ICS ports are originating from inferior code to start with.
thoughts?

I have tested only Andromadus Audacity Beta 2 and Ice Cream SENSEwich Beta 4|Sense 4.0A One V|4.0.3|ONLINE and both seemed super smooth, not sure about battery life and future stuttering though.
Iam very satisfied with ILWT CM7.

Sorry, I assumed GNexus/GNex was the generally accepted short form for the Galaxy Nexus.

Yeah! That's why I specified "AOSP ICS" because sense 4 is how it *should* be.
I'm on ILWT myself. Great, smooth, stable rom!

Andromadus Audacity Beta 2 is 100% smooth on the home screen. It's smooth like Sense 4 is.

Awesome! I'm gonna try it right now. I'd say in this context that the Andromadus team has made the ROM smooth in spite of itself then lol

I played with a Gnexus the other day and it was smooth beyond belief, in fact I have never seen a device run so well. Unlike Apple devices, android isn't idiot proof. You have too many things in the background and it's going to lag. The user has just as much an impact on device performance as the actual device.

Good to hear. I was feeling pretty cynical about it after trying this guys phone out. Was the phone rooted and running a custom rom or anything?
Who knows what this other guy had running on his phone that made it so laggy, but I'm glad to hear that's not always the case.
On a more positive note, Audacity B2 is really really nice now!
I actually doubt I'll be jumping back to GB after this. Totally impressed with our devs!

i tried to reflash stock modified rom (virtuous sense) after almost four months on ICS and stock rom seems to me to have similar action speed (for example, app startup) and much more lags in transitions - scrolling etc.
So, i decided to stick with ICS.
