Worth getting over Nexus one? - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hey guys!I'm planning on getting the Samsung Galaxy S soon. But now I'm actually stuck between this and the Nexus One.I'm aware that the processor aka the 'Hummingbird 1Ghz processor' is faster than the Snapdragon processor on the Nexus One.I'm not really going for the looks but I've realised that the SGS has a lagging problem and I believe that rooting and using the one click lag fix can fix that but I'm not planning to root my phone. Is there any other way I can fix that without rooting?Because I'm going for the SGS mostly because of the large internal memory that can keep lots of apps! While the Nexus one only has 190mb available. So please help me with this! And lastly, will it receive Android 2.3?Cos I heard that Samsung isn't very frequent in their updates.

Go for Nexus S and forget about Nexus One, the Nexus one is old news= old phone. Galaxy S is a good choose but if i where u I pick the Nexus S and you get the android rom updates allways first.

In the area I'm leaving in,Nexus S issue not available yet. So I'm stuck between this 2 choices...

would also go nexus s, but you will be limited to 8 Gbyte, no sdcardslot

Isnt Nexus s with 16gb internal memory???

We were worried about Froyo, but now we have it. It does take time, but eventually you will get it. If you want it immediately, I'd like to ask you why, since you aren't even interested in rooting it? The Nexus One is a developer-friendly phone, while the Samsung Galaxy S was designed entirely with the consumer in mind. Am sure, with the success of the SGS so far, Samsung will not let us down.
What's more? Gorilla Glass [Even Samsung's Nexus S does not have it]!

Go the SGS I'm about to flash Darkys rom it's going to be sooooo quick.

Thanks for the brilliant answer!Looks like I'm gonna go with the Samsung Galaxy S!

SGS all the way.

Dude...you're asking this in the SGS forum...what do you think the replies are going to be? LOL
HOWEVER, I've gotta say that the SGS kicks almighty ass!!
The Nexus One came out in January, and this phone in August and has way better technology in ever respect. You won't regret getting the SGS....unless you flash 2.2 onto it lol...

Well maybe some other guys will want to advice me not to buy this phone after their own experience with it.But so far,all the replies look pretty satisfied with SGS

very nice comparison engine, even when i picked the Nexus S it shy in comparison to SGS
the only thing that is NOT accurate for SGS is the part that claims
microSD card (32GB included, max 32GB)
it's 16 GB or 8 GB, i've never seen a 32GB version any where
i would most definitely buy one if it existed, maybe as a Special Edition, or something other funky release, for collectors only.
unfortunately most of those Collector edition versions are only made for 900/1900/2100 market
there is a Acer liquid something model which is a special release I really realy liked, but .... no north america bands (NAM)

[Rumor] Great news if true Nexus 2 is going to a samsung phone

Now if this true a google optimized samsung would mean the developers working on our phone will get an optimized kernal etc for hardware similar to our own
plus it is supposed to be a google phone meaning no custom ui so a we would better ports and roms for our phones.

Clowns or not they are currently the ONLY phone maker who did not lock android down like a prison. Do you prefer getting a new HTC with their horrendous nand lock? Or maybe a Motorola with their encrypted bootloader ?
I didn't think so. Nuff said.

Samsung hardware with google software is indeed a deadly combo!
I told my cousin yesterday that samsung should drop dealing with the software side, and keep on concentrating on hardware. It seems they took my advice. Good boy Samsung!

Nexus Two = Galaxy S
Have you heard the news? Google is working with Samsung on Nexus Two.
And rumors claim that it will be actually called Nexus S. It is supposed to have the same specs as Galaxy S have and to be released with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
http://androidandme.com/2010/10/news/rumor-samsung-will-announce-the-nexus-two-on-november-8th/
The device will be the Nexus S
* It will be branded as a Google experience device featuring Android 2.3
* It will have the same 4" SAMOLED screen seen on the Galaxy S devices
* It will feature the same Hummingbird processor from the Galaxy S handsets
* It will be easily rootable like the Nexus One was
* It will be at least GSM, unknown about carrier or CDMA
* It will have no hard buttons on the face, similar to a Vibrant

These are good news for us, 'coz we may be able to have Nexus Two goodies and seems like Gingerbread will be ported to Galaxy S (if not officially released) very easily.
If this is the case, nov. 8th announcement will be Da Bomb!!
If this is true, I might sell my SGS and get this one instead for a bigger modding community and faster updates!

Well, Galaxy S is the best Android phone on the market at the moment (hardware wise). So if there isn't going to be released any better soon, Galaxy S is the most obvious choice for Nexus Two.

Why would you? It's basicaly the same phone, only ported!
You'd have to do the hastle to sell the phone, get another one with the same internals but with Google's logo instead. Just flash a rom on the first one and it'll be the same (ok... not the logos, but you can get those on eBay if you REALY want em!)

Nexus S and Vibrant

I still think vibrant is better than nexus s besides 2.3!!
still the same 16gb, no sd card, no 720p, nfc is just a receiver only (i read somewhere)

me keeping my vibrant
I know everyone is going to beat this topic to death. Is there any reason to grab the nexus if you have a vibrant. Is there anything besides the FFC.
As long as there are drivers available for the BT/WIFI/GPS, there is no need to get the Nexus S if you have a Vibrant. The rom will be ported to us anyway.

the question is when ? It took a long time and very buggy releases from Galaxy S Froyo until finally Vibrant leaks started to come out. When do you think they will leak 2.3......even 2.2 is not out yet.....
so porting from Nexus S might not be as easy as it looks......

I agree with the Nexus does look better then the vibrants iphone look. Dont we have flash on vibrant or am I missing something. And soon as the Chefs around here get a smell of 2.3 it wont be long until its on vibrant.
Is the cpu any faster? Adding ffc mod to Vibrant makes it a Nexus right?
Camera flash..i think he means.

Camera flash we dont have. 2.1 also does not have Adobe Flash, only 2.2. They also added NFC which is useless to most, SAMOLED class is curved (which i think is cool), FFC is there, 3.0 bluetooth was taken out and replaced with 2.1....no biggy here. Everything else is the same.
Onces I play with it in store, i will know for sure if i want it. I hate how Vibrant feels in hand, if Nexus S is the same, then no go.....
The point of the Nexus S is that it a bare bones Android phone. Meaning there is little in the way of Samsung and T-mobile, or other carriers. This means ideally that as soon as Google releases an update it should be realitively quick to get it to Nexus S. As opposed to the Vibrant that we are still waiting on amn official release. My understanding anyway I could be wrong.
Well I'm getting one just to have a working GPS at the least... I hope to god they've rectified that train wreck.

dont know about that...... hardware should be the same. only time will tell.
ps. NS also lacks SD Card slot.....
If only for the support, I agree. I wonder, will it support at&t frequencies?

Cant use my 32 gig sd card full of videos and music. Humm, thats a deal breaker. Plus no dual core cpu? No 720P? pffft.
But it is the new test phone, so it will always have the latest and greatest. I still dont have a real Cyanogen 6.x for my vibrant.
I see no compelling reason to go from a Galaxy S to the Nexus S. FFC is useless to me and can be added anyway. Camera flash is no big deal. First crack at the Google software is the big seller, but that's mostly just geek cred not particularly useful. I'm happy with the modified ROMS on the Vibrant. Lack of SD card hurts the Nexus. NFC will be useless for a while.
However if I didn't already have a Galaxy S I'd be looking at the Nexus S if only to get a working GPS... presumably. Have to wait for some real world reviews.
Personally I dont need a ffc or a flash, my sister has an evo and she uses her ffc maybe twice a month. I almost never use the camera in dim light conditions plus the night vision on the vibrant is good enough. Similar 1ghz processor, 512ram, no sd card is killing me!! eventually 2.3 will be ported to vibrant just a matter of time!!
ps gps issue has been addressed in almost every rom in the dev section.

It's not "easy" but easier than you're making it sound. Your comparison is irrelevant. The reason froyo took so long to port over was differences in the device we were porting from, and once the JK2 froyo build leaked, it was running near perfect on the vibrant the same day. 2.3 is out and released already and the device we'd be porting it from has an almost identical setup and also is compatible with the T-mobile network from the get go etc etc. I'd say there's gonna be some sort of working port by the end of the year without a doubt.
On the google page about the Nexus S it said that it featured wifi hotspot without additional fees from carriers. If the Nexus S is ported to the vibrant any chance that feature could be included too?

How is Galaxy S different from Vibrant vs Nexus S different from Vibrant ?
port from Galaxy S was never working 100% until Vibrant Froyo (JK2) leaked. GPS wasnt working, all buttons were messed up, 3.5mm jack wasnt fully functional...etc. and 2.3 Vibrant leak is NOT coming in near future or most likely EVER.
people are speculating that it may be difficult to port 2.3 over to vibrant si,ply be cause it uses iNAND flash memory but IDK im no developer
have to wait and see when its released
Also specs might be very similar but we dont know on how similar the hardware is...drivers could still be incompatible with galaxy S hardware
I wouldn't expect to see samsung release 2.3 for galaxy S line of phones IMO they probably have some sort of deal with google to exclusively have 2.3 on nexus S and google would lose sales if galaxy S got 2.3 as an OTA

How much would it take for you to trade your N1 for a SGS?

I have the option to trade my mint at&t nexus one with 8gb msd card, otterbox commuter & defender, case-mate tough case and boxwave gelli along with all other accessories for a BNIB captivate. How much cash along with the captivate for my nexus would you say is worth the trade?

+1 on this ! The samsung Galaxy S phones' owners will probably get 2.3 update by the time we N1 owners get Honeycomb
not to mention a crappy filesystem that makes the phone so much slower than it should be (even with lagfixes).
Also, a non-working GPS would be a deal breaker for me

this. i just did a round of phone browsing this weekend at every carrier store to try out all the galaxy variants, and every one has this annoying hesitation when scrolling homescreens etc. it blew my mind that such awesome hardware is ruined by this. i dont know if this is something fixable by the one click hack? how cold samsung do this though...totally turned me off and glad i have my nexus one.
the browser scrolling was definitely smoother though, made me a little jealous. but it wasnt an enormous difference to make me switch just yet.
I'd guess that's an issue with TouchWiz, and I'd expect it to be resolved with a vanilla gingerbread os. Not that I'm getting the S, I'm just saying that's my thoughts.

I have both nexus one and vibrant both with latest froyo roms. From my experience:
Performance is the same.
GPS the same.
Camera samsung wins.
Battery nexus with custom kernel wins by a bit.
Screen which I think is one of the important features of the phones- samsung wins by a land slide. The screen is amazing at night, but even more so in direct sunlight.
In my opinion both phones would not get much better with newer OSes. They run perfectly right now. So the winner from the hardware point of view is the vibrant. From look and feel point of view the winner is nexus one.
If you use a case for nexus then you do not care for its design. Then my recommendation is to take samsung gs.

afaik the developer version was updated by htc not google. htc released updates from their developer.htc.com site.
nexus one is updated by google themselves.

I doubt the Vibrant will get Gingerbread before the Nexus. There are Official Google Videos with Gingerbread already running on the Nexus One. What device do you think it was mostly built from?
I know it's already running on nexus one, but on 16th(?) it will be released on nexus S. I do not know when google will push the OTA to nexus one, but what I know is that devs here will do their best to port gingerbread from nexus s to vibrant with most of their hardware identical. Even if nexus one will get it first, the vibrant won't be far behind.
If the next nexus would be on motorola and not on samsung phones, then I would recommend nexus one/two and not vibrant because samsung sucks with updates.
But that's my opinion (based on performance/features and not design/looks).

S III rocks. More performance and more battery than S II. Why NOT to upgrade? Only if you don't have enough money, because everyone wants to upgrade. It's always good to keep supported and updated things. S II is going to be DEAD for Samsung in a few months, just like S I. I don't doubt Samsung won't update S II to Jellybean, just like they didn't update S I to ICS.

The S1 came with Eclair then to Froyo and hen Gingerbread. So there is a chancr S2 will go from GB to ICS then JB (Not Justin Beiber. Lol).. But if samsung follows the 18month rule (forgot what it was called) and JB wont be released within a few months then there is a chance we won't get an upgrade (from the OEM anyway). If pocketnow is correct and JB is just a
point release (minor update from 4.0 ics to 4.1 and not 5.0) then maybe we will have a chance.

Battery is nice, but I dont see any large reason of requiring more performance. SGS2 does everything I need done without problems. Obviously there are other upgrades and new things, but nothing to completely convince me to change to the SGS3.

I agree, but more battery results almost the same if you have more processor and bigger screen, plus i really like the SG2 design over the SG3.
I think I'll pass the 3 and wait for the 4. Or the next Sony Xperia S, because thats a sexy phone, and the only reason why i dont change my SG2 its because it has the same or less specs.
I was expecting more from the SG3. It just dont look classy like the 2. Looks more plastic.

Of course not. Can't I give my opinion? If you disagree, you can post here why. But just telling that it was noobish, just make your answer noobish. So shut up and stop being a noob.
PS: Some guy told me that the GS I has been upgrated twice. Sorry, I forgot this fact. Maybe Samsung won't forget the GSII in a few months, but after Jellybean. I'm sure Samsung will upgrate GS II to JB, it was no major update, it's mostly the project butter And since the nexus got upgraded, Samsung has no excuses to not upgrade.
Really this is how i look at it: The S3 is the S2 with a slightly nicer screen, slightly nicer battery, slightly nicer version of android, Slightly more memory, and a few mild tweaks. Big deal! The S2 still kicks ass of any phone out there, its a workhorse that will be good for at least another year before its really outdated.
Faster processor? My processor is fast enough as it is!
More memory? I never run out of memory doing what i usually do!
Newer android version? Developers for the SGS2 are awesome! LOTS of development for the S2 and theres lots of ports from the S3 to be made, still lots of room to advance the S2 so no worries there.
The only way im going to the S3 is if i can sell my phone and buy the S3 for only $100 more. Thats my limit. If i can, why not. $100 for me for an upgrade every year or so? thats not too bad. But if it doesnt happen so what? I love my phone! it works well, its fast, it does everything i want and more!
Anyways, thats how i feel, and i know there are many otheres who feel the same way!

Yep. It was upgraded twice. SGS1 originally had eclair then upgraded to froyo and then gingerbread. They also have ics through cm9 so upgraded 2 times officially and once unofficially

SGS2 id known as the android device with the most roms available, and i can tell you one thing,
if you want the sgs3 becouse of its os, SGS2 next update wont be 4.1 Jellly Bean,
it will be touchwiz ux from the sgs3, but for the performance, its a great device,
but they didnt solve neither battery or heat problems, and the device is very weak
and fragile

The s3 has double the memory...that's not a slight upgrade at all. Just wanted to point that out...I agree with the rest. Although the s3 is noticeably faster. I played with one at work today...it was impressive. At least it was a bigger upgrade than the iPhone 4 to the 4s. That's what made me get a gs2 in the first place...slow laggy 512 ram from the iPhone compared to a gig in the s2 and the s3 has 2gb and its very noticeable.

I have the international S3 with 1 gig of ram and I can already feel the difference.
Before I actually got the phone in my hands I didn't think it was any different from S2. Oh how wrong was I. The S3 is a much better device in every aspect.
I will keep my S2 anyway, it's the best looking phone ever in my opinion.

[Q] Replacing my Nexus S. Need help to deicide!

Guys i need a little help. I am replacing my lovely nexus s.
My candidates are
Nexus 4
Galaxy S4
HTC ONE
Galaxy S3
Today i tried an S3 and a HTC ONE and an S4 (i9505) and a n4.
I love the S4 the design i think is much better than the s3, but the ONE has the best design, but i never buy a phone just 4 the design. And it is impossible to replace anything on the HTC One. The camera is not so good either, but the microphone and the stabilization is realy an useful extra. And HTC is never too good on updating its software. N4 is is a good all rounder, but the camera is crap The screen was insanely nice in the s4. My problem is that the s4 browser lagged like hell, i loaded up the verge desktop as my usual test page and during loading it was all choppy and unresponsive even the s3 was much faster! Not to menion my nexus 7 almost my dated nexus s was more responsive.... Maybe the demo phone does not had the final software? Can somone with a stock i9505 can try theverge? Please tell me how the browser behaves on a final s4? thx
I'd suggest you go with the s4. The lag was due to firmware not being ready. Chances are the model you will buy will probably not lag. And even if it does it will be fixed with an update. The s4 has the best hardware around right now, no doubt about that. The htc one is also a great phone and you won't regret buying either of them. I wouldn't buy the nexus 4 or s3 though.

S3 would be only because of price but i dont realy like compromise What you have against the nexus? Do you have the s4?
You may want to ask this in a general section and not in any sub forum as you will get biased replies to whichever forum you ask in. If you have decided to ask here it sounds like you are leaning towards the S4. The One at the moment sounds like the smoothest but if you want/need an external battery and SD slot you should probably go for the S4. The Ones camera isnt bad, its not as good as the S4 in daylight but better in low light. I'd go into a store again then compare the One & S4 to see which one you really like.

No doubt Nexus 4 is a nice phone. But it is 6 month old tech at this point. You will love the S4 coming from Nexus S, unless you absolutely hate touchwiz...

Thats a good point, if you like stock android you do not want a S4 unless you want to wait and see about this whole bootloader mess and get cyanogen.

I imagine what is in the store is final retail. I have never seen any device in store running pre-release hardware or firmware. What you see is what you get.
You'll get different views.
If software is important I'd recommend the nexus 4 as you'll get key lime pie before any Samsung or HTC device. It's not bloated with features, it's simple stock Android fast and functional.

Then i will go to another store and try it as if the s4 would behave that much slower as the s3 i would expect lots of people complaining
Only options in my eyes would be the S4 or the One. I have had both, the One first but I had to switch to the S4 as every single unit I found had stuck pixels among other faults. Aside from that it is a great phone, but if you do consider one then make sure you get a good one before you leave the shop!
Alternatively, absolutely no regrets going to the S4 instead.

The camera on the one is a fair bit better in the 1.29 update, check out some comparison reviews. Also, in terms of software updates, I read a piece somewhere that showed pretty categorically that HTC have the best history of updates.

Well lack of expandable storage along with the maximum option being a 16 gb version is the dealbreaker. I have a 16 gb s3 + 32 gb micro sd and I tend to fill that up with music and movies so I wouldn't be able to survive on just 16 gb. Theres also the battery life which doesn't seem to be that great along with it being non removable though I could probably live with it if it was only just that. I don't have the s4 right now. Still trying to decide between the s4 and one...

I have seen that too and HTC is realy better in updating non flagship devices for example the galaxy w does not even get updated from 2.3, but s2 the former flagship got 4.1.2 and wil get 4.2.2 and the HTC sensation remained on 4.0.4. But if someone replaces phone every year that does not realy matter

Which is necessary cause the One came out with an older Android version.
Does anyone with the actual phone could report on the browser Or we all are just wannabe owners Thx in advance
