Ugh... My dog drowned my EVO... - EVO 4G General

Yep... My dog was so jealous of having to compete with my EVO for attention, he decided to drown it in Dr. Pepper. Last night, Went to jack in the box and got some food and when I went to sleep - I forgot to pick up the Dr. Pepper and put it in the kitchen. Well sure enough, when I woke up this morning, the cup was spilt all over the coffee table and guess who was right in the middle... you got it - my EVO.
Well I called Sprint and they referred me to asurion or what ever and I should have another phone tomorrow.
Kind of sucks cause I will probably end up getting a refurbished phone that will have the newest HBoot and software on it... so will have to figure out how to root again...

refurbs suck. my new evo got a bit wet and i used rice and it turned out perfect. no defects or blemishes.

yeah - if it was just water, I could probably do that too, but it was Dr.Pepper... rice wont get rid of the sticky syrup left over.... so Im pretty much screwed...

good luck to you. do you have to pay the $100 for the phone too? i think you may have too.

Yup, $100 deposit. But $100 is better than paying $300 or so for one on Craigslist, or $500 for a new one. My Evo is a refurb with hardware 003.

Yeah, I had to pay the 100 deductible, but they charged it to my sprint account, so I didnt have to come out of pocket for it right now before christmas...which was cool...
I'll get another EVO tomorrow... over night delivery
Hope I can root it

Not all refurbished phones suck. I just got one. HBoot 00.97.0000.
No problems at all. Feels like I never had a different phone.

Well I did in fact get a NEW EVO... it is not refurbished... it came with the battery and SD card, even after the guy told me to keep my old ones cause I might need them.
The problem now is that I am on a 0004 device, instead of the 0002 I was on before. It also came with the new 3.30 software and my Hboot is now 2.02

I gotta say though, I hadnt charged my phone in about 12 hours and my battery life is absolutly great compared to my old battery life (even with JuiceDefender and other measures taken to save battery life)
I have read several ways to root this particular software, but can any one point me in the direction of the exact method I would need to use with these specs? Apparently the unrEVOked method does not work on 2.02Hboot/3.30software...

Very, very easy. Also you have to use Amon_RA recovery because Clockworkmod has not been updated to work on the h boot version.

With Asurion its completely random. It just depends on how many refurbs they have at the time.

You'd hardly notice any differences with a refurb vs a new one anyhow. And if you did, you would most likely be able to send it back without problems.

It took me 8 or 9 phone calls to Asurion over the course of 2 months to get my Hero Refurb with spontaneous reboots and no GPS replaced. They kept telling me I had to play their game of resetting, reinitializing and rebooting until I finally convinced them it wasn't going to "fix" that way.

Yeah I know, but I know it was new cause it came with the battery and a SD card. I have a friend who had to get a phone replaced with asurion and they told me the same thing they told me, which was "keep your battery and SD card, we will not be sending it with a refurbished phone"... when he got his replacement phone - it did not have a battery or SD card. I got my replacement phone in OEM wrapping and it had a battery and SD card enclosed... so unless they atarted sending refurbs with SD cards and batteries... Im willing to bet my phone is new

Just out of curiosity...what did u guys do 2 brick ur phones ? Just tryna learn from ur mistakes so I won't brick mine
Just make sure you get the LATEST RADIO AND SPL. Make sure you install the RADIO first, then the SPL. DO NOT LET ANYTHING INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS. I just sat my phone down and walked away for 20 minutes. A good thing to do is install the radio and verify it by turning the phone off and hold the camera and powering it up. This also lets you check to see if you have a PVT board. Also, after you install the SPL there will be no ROM on the phone. I thought mines was done after doing this. Just have another SD card with the ROM of your choice on it to unzip.
rooted updated spl and radio fine I make sure I follow steps as posted my developers just wondering if these bricked phones are a result of not following steps carefully or something else. I may read sumthin about 10x before I decide to use it that's just me

Phone insurance advice

So my hero's track ball has been glitching out on me for awhile now and i want to know if you guys think it's covered by insurance?
And if it is since i have mine rooted and running Deadmau5 CM and clockwork mod will running an ruu put everything back to normal so at the sprint store they won't know any diff?
i'm not sure...but the trackball messing up is a hardware problem therefore souldn't matter what rom you are running or if your phone is rooted...that's my view on it...

If you're running a different firmware they will for sure blame it on that. Put the original firmware on it then take it to a sprint store that doesn't have a service center in it. They will order you a replacement Hero
several weeks to a month after buying my hero back in april, i severally cracked the screen. just recently in the last two months i took it into a sprint store (the one i bought it from, which had a service-center inside, but also a differently owned franchise) and they didn't care about the phone being rooted and thought it was really cool i had froyo on it... they didn't even know it was rooted or froyo'd until it turned back on after they fixed the glass, which was free because i have full coverage insurance, and they noticed, at the time, i was running CM6. So the manager started fooling around with it and was like, is this froyo on your hero? and i stated, yessir, lol, and he was like thats cool man, hell yea dude, and stated he didn't care what i did to the phone... but it being a hardware issue like mine was, they shouldn't, but then again, i was dealing with a franchise not a corprate store too... that might make a difference, it might not... worse case seniro is that you take it in being rooted and what not and they say they can't do anythingn for you, and you just make a nandroid backup of your current ROM and then backup your sd-card onto your computer, then put the Sense-bloatful-bull**** back on it and take it back in... now they can't say a thing... but you shouldn't have an issue...
just my two cents... good luck buddy...
*cough-cough* AOSP runs faster *cough-cough* hahaha... CM6 was nice though, i really liked it, a little more customizable though, but if you know your way around linux or fooled around with the kitchen and/or some other stuff, you can pretty much do or add anything to AOSP...

My brother has a cracked digitizer and he also has full coverage and he took it in and they just told him the insurance doesn't cover user damage.
Sprint's TEP
Have your brother print this out and ask the rep to explain it..clearly states that TEP now covers physical damage. You only need Asurion for lost or water damage devices. Sprint covers the rest.

[Q] never ending resetting

Hey guys, sorry this is so long. So i posted something here about a week or two ago stating that my Evo which I bought on craigslist is resetting. The info I have for this evo is as follows:
Rooted to Metro pcs
Firmware version: 2.1
Kernel Version: 2.6.29-a2443432 htc-kerneland 18-2 #1
Build number Bugless beast to0mod vo 0.1
Software number 1.32.651.6
Let me start off by telling you what I have done so far after extensive research. I have done countless factory resets. Bought two new batteries. I have wiped data, and cache dalvik etc. I have (which was a recommendation by someone on here) installed metro droid 2.0. Which actually just made things worse and wound up having to boot into recovery to revive my phone.
I can't even finish watching a video on you tube. It will reset when music is playing, in the middle of a call or text, if the battery is hot or cold.
Sometimes it will get into a reboot cycle where the only screen that I see is the white evo screen. Other times it will get all the way to the android screen and then reset. Sometimes the white screen will just stay there. Usually this will go one for about a half an hour to an hour when finally by the grace of God himself will finally stay on and fully boot on.
I don't have astro or any task manger installed.
I'm really at a loss here folks. I called htc and they said that they would RMA it for me and as a last ditch resort I will do that but I was hoping the powers here might be able to lend me a hand. Thanks for all insightful help. PLLLEEAASE HELP!
Cheers, Jason
You're definitely going to need a new one. Mine was doing the same thing and its not fixable :/ but I got it swapped out same day from sprint, maybe you can ask HTC really nicely haha

Oh well went to metro today to purchase a cheapy phone to hold me over while the evo is rma 'ed. IF I am told anything pertinent I will share it with everyone as I see this issue is quite a pain for a lot of people.

Anybody body else really bored since they can't root? I use to flash something different two-three times per week on my hero...now i'm bored.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoy the phone for the most part and it's a HUGE step beyond my hero. If I could have my upgrade back I would get something else...sadly i'm poor and don't want to shove out the full price or buy anything off ebay (i've been banned from there since 2003...long story).

Why don't you just get the 3D or something? It's rooted now, so you get a better phone AND the ability to play with ROMs. I know I wouldn't be waiting around for the EVO to be rooted if I had the opportunity for a better phone...
I talked to sprint and they said that since I used my upgrade I couldn't return this phone and get the upgraded price again. Can't afford the 3d

EVO does not charge, completely revert back?

Hey guys so my EVO has been my daily driver since the day it came out, haven't had any problems and been loving it since.
Recently i purchased an extended battery to hopefully increase the amount of time i have to leave the phone charging. When i switched to the new battery i didn't notice much difference, even conditioned the battery perfectly as well.
So my next step i installed a SBC kernel to see if that may help, well the only thing i can think is that i got lazy and somehow left my phone on with the SBC kernel and now it has messed up the phone.
PROBLEM:
Phone will not accept charge via USB, OEM or Aftermarket charger. The only way for me to use my phone is to charge a battery with an external charger and then just keep switching them out.
So i believe this may be caused by using the SBC kernel but can't be sure (the phone is a bit old and beat up), but i want to revert everything back to stock so i can take it to the Sprint store and see if they will just swap me with another EVO so i don't have any phone downtime. I know worst case scenario i can order another one through insurance but i don't want to spend the $100 deductible if i don't have to.
What is the best way to revert completely back to stock and hopefully make it so at the Sprint store they can't tell that i used a custom rom and kernel?
I created a NAND backup of my current install and was just going to remove the sd card when i go to the Sprint store so i can at least have a backup.
I found these stock roms:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/cdma-htc-evo-4g-development/121961-sprint-htc-evo-4g-shipped-roms.html
But can't seem to find any stock kernels except this thread on XDA:
Stock Kernel - xda-developers
Anybody know where i can download the stock kernel?
I also found this thread on XDA with document from a Sprint forum saying that they will accept rooted phones?:
xda-developers - View Single Post - Sprint returns
So my question really comes down to, should i just worry about flashing the stock kernel and rom and then just bring it to a Sprint store?
Anybody got any feedback that has done this before or can point me in the right direction? I want to try and stop by the store today to see what we can get done, have a big week of work ahead of me and don't need any phone downtime.
I also found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812030
But is that still viable if they are accepting rooted phones and since it is a bit dated? Should i just print out that thread from a forum to bring to sprint store in case they give me problems?
Thanks guys!
I would revert to stock just in case, especially if they can link the kernel to your issue.
Question, you said it won't accept a charge, is that just for the aftermarket battery or the stock too?
Does the USB port function at all?
Because it sounds like it could just be a USB failure.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MUSAURP7
Take that file and rename it PC36IMG.zip and boot into your bootloader and approve the update.
That will return it to complete stock. [Kernel, radio, ROM etc]
If you used unrevoked you need to flash this .zip first.
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip
Thanks for the quick reply, it looks like it's USB all together, it will work for a minute or two then cut off, same thing with charging. Normally i just take my micro SD card and put it in a converter that hooks up to my laptop, now that i tried with USB i notice that doesn't work either.
Are there any fixes/troubleshooting guides for USB failure or is that something hardware related?

There was a thread in the development section some time ago but I think this is just a straight hardware issue.
Unroot just to protect yourself and take it in.
Be warned you will likely get a replacement with 2.3.3 (not rootable currently) if they can't repair the USB port.

Can't promise anything and good luck not getting one with 2.3.3 on it.

Whenever i try to run that ZIP file i get this error:
"Main version is older! Update fail!"
Then it gives me options to reboot device, but now I can't even get the phone to boot up.
What do i need to do to get this working???
Here's info from bootloader screen:

You have s-on so you're not rooted so you can take it into the store.

Ok but it goes straight to bootloader screen now and nothing else?
I tried flashing another ROM and that did not work, guessing because im no longer rooted, but all i can find for shipped roms are the RUU.
Do you know where i can get a stock rom to flash via recovery? I just dont want to take the phone into the store and them put another battery in it to see that it goes straight to the bootloader screen
Any ideas?

Oh you flashed the s-on .zip, sorry there's so much goddamn trolling around here that you can't help but get caught up in it.
Here's a list of the RUUs.

The .zip are the one that you change to PC36IMG.zip
If you do one of the two top ones you will not be able to re-root the phone later.
[Might not matter if they are replacing it anyway]
Ok great, let me give it a try, thanks for all your help and quick replies!
Okay she's at the store now sitting in that long ass line of phones that need repaired...sometimes it's hard to explain to the sprint people you know what the problem probably is without giving away too much information.
Either way i took the forum printout with me just in case...
BUT they told me they only have (1) evo in stock (obviously besides the ones for sale) and there are 3 other evo's in front of me needing repair (software hopefully).
So as i sat there for a good 30 minutes waiting to give my phone to someone i looked through all the phones they have out now.
Been with Sprint for over 5 years now and the only real upgrade they gave me was the EVO from the TP2 because of how much i complained and complained and complained until they finally gave me one.
I don't have any problems with my EVO, but i use my phone for work and not having it for a day almost makes me feel paralyzed (should not have given old phones to friends, ugh).
What do you think the chances are of them just giving me another phone they have in stock? I'm not too concerned with what it is right now as i just need something to hold me over until i buy another one, but i've had my fun with my EVO and they have plenty of other phones that cost just about the same thing.
I know this question is hard to answer, but if they tell me they have to order the EVO you think if i complain enough they will just give me another phone instead? Maybe i can call Sprint before i head back to the store and see if they can work something out for me?
I'm not saying i want them to give me the phone that cost $200 after rebate as the EVO is now only 99, but if i pay the difference would they? Anybody had this work before?
Hopefully they can just repair my EVO or give me another one, i'm just trying to figure out the best way to do this without having to buy the damn phone at retail cost then return it when my EVO gets in, cut up all my credit cards years ago and thinking about it now just makes me want to cry since i really need one now...ugh..hellp!
Does anybody also know if their business plans have any type of SLA for phones? I would pay $15 a month instead of $8 just to know i can walk into a store and they would give me another of the same or something comparable just so i dont have to go without a phone??
Thanks, i'll let you know how it goes today!
The phone shows signs of corrosion, so they say i have to file an insurance claim. I told them to open it for me and show me where and the dude showed me this small spot on the other side of the board the camera is on that has like an outline of where there may have been some type of liquid?
Who knows, the phone hasn't been dropped in anything, hasn't been used the rain, but they said they are not willing to fix it because they found that spot. BS, that's not what caused my USB port not to work but obviously they don't care...grrrrrr!

Honestly, in a case like this, IF the phone truly has never been dropped in liquid I would call Sprint retentions and complain.
But please only do so IF it truly hasn't.

It really was never exposed to any type of water, only thing i can possibly think was maybe when it rained by i have the otterbox on it so i dont even see how that could be possible.
I did call them and complained a whole lot. They basically gave me a credit for next month and i just paid the deductible for insurance.
Anyways thanks a ton for your help man!

Do you know of a way to root the phone without having USB? Since i'm going to keep this phone i want to try and fix it myself now but USB doesn't work in order to root it again haha
So now that i'm going to keep the phone i guess i need to bring it back to a rootable state...and since i flashed the newest ROM im guessing i can't do that yet, eh?
No, android 2.3.3 is not rootable for the Evo yet
Only a few days later and here's a wonderful thread that worked perfectly for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218386
Rooting was even easier than before!
Now i can finally use Synergy which is very exciting...i'm also going to try that usb trick and see if i can fix my original EVO, maybe use it for dev or something.
