Newbie Question - Droid X General

I have rooted my phone and now I want to start playing with the ROMs.
My question is, what rom manager is the best. Is "rom manger" good?
If so, I notice it will give you a list of all the rom's and let you know of all the updates.
I have a Droid X with the lastest update from Verizon.
Please let me know
Thank you

Yes rom manager is probably best but if you want to have the latest and greatest download the "team black hat" app in the market for $2 and thry usually throw out the lateat releases for donators.

Don't listen to that load of crap. Team Black Hat (also known as P3Droid) releases buggy apps, and half-ROMs, along with FAKED .SBF's, created by himself, NOT Motorola. It's a shame people still support him after TWO instances on the Droid X alone, where using his "ROMs" and "Updates" would leave your phone useless, and unable to .SBF back to stock.
Oh, and it's a paid app. Only Android community app I've ever paid for is ROM Manager back for my Droid1, because it's worth it, and koush is LIGHTYEARS ahead of Team MoneyBags.
Yes, download ROM Manager.

Ok, no need to be harsh about things... P3 and those guys have contributed a TON to the android community, including the SBF files you are bashing against. I was just giving out the info that was requested. I personally don't use the team black hat app, but the question was about ROM managers in general.
Please don't come into the forums and rant and rave about a potentially bad experience you had and add bias to a simple question.

Thank you for the information.
If i want to try different ROMs, is there a way to save apps or app files. For example, Angry Birds saved games?
I'm just wondering if i have to reinstall all my apps again or if i can restore them through a backup software.
Thank you

"Titanium backup" also i like "MyBackUp Pro" as a backup backup. Yes overkill but you loose your stuff once and you'll wish you had it

Can I do a app restore on a new ROM?

A question for devs, about the lack of find in Rom manager.

Maybe its just me, but I'd like to see Rom manager properly used for our device.
My friend has the ego 4G and when using Rom manager he early goes to xda for his updates or a new Rom because for the Evo devs have it set up so their Rom populated the download section of Rom manager. Also this way when a Rom is updated you get a notification that there's an update.
This would benefit the users of the mt4g because a lot of the Rom downloads and mirrors are not always mobile friendly.
Was just wondering why none of our devs take use of this feature.

Me and RK have been talking about it. I dont know if it will work with the multiupload links, so we need to see how his server is gonna be able to handle the load.
- We do a lot that you guys dont even have a clue we're doing.

i dont doubt that a bit! option, and team royal, are always busy behind the curtains! just thought it was a bit odd that the mt4g roms arent on there... but yall recomend that we do a full wipe every time and ppl may also try to flash via ROM manager rather than recovery and doing a TRUE full wipe as advised... so i can see both sides as wellits all good in the hood homie, just wanted to put in my 2 cents
We could make it work with rom manager, at this point its just a matter of hosting bandwidth and such.
2 things:
1) Load balancing (deals with server issues)
2) How much bandwidth?
I happen to have 3 dedicated servers in EU(London), USA(NY), and USA(CA) and may be able to help. Servers are used for work (not just idle), but it may be enough...
These are windows servers btw.

[Q] Amazon App Store and Android Market

Hey Everyone,
I haven't seen anything on the Epic forums about this yet... so here is my piece.
I got the Amazon app store the other day, and I'm pretty impressed. The most impressive feature, to me, isn't the free app a day... it is the fact that it remembers your purchases/downloads. I've wiped my phone yesterday to start from scratch, and as soon as I reinstalled the Amazon App Store, it asked me if I wanted to view my purchased apps. I clicked each one, they downloaded and installed.
The part I don't get, is why can't the Android Market do the same thing? You are required to put in a user/pass (just like amazon app store)... so what prevents them from at least remembering what apps you've downloaded and provide the links to re-download them? I've used Titanium Backup to back up and restore, but I'm not convinced that it doesn't create problems (phone runs much smoother and with less problems when I don't use Titanium Backup to restore).
I know this was long, and you've probably lost interest already... but if anyone has any info or knowledge on the subject, please chime in!
That is all.
Actually my nexus one does auto restore from android market, so it might be a feature in gingerbread.

Ok, maybe I need to clarify a bit...
I haven't "purchased" any apps from the Android Market or the Amazon App Store. I've downloaded numerous free apps.
I would imagine paid apps get re-linked... but what about the free apps you've purchased?
I've been playing around with ROMS... so after every wipe, I go in to the market... and nothing is there.
If this is a feature in Gingerbread, it will be awesome. I would never worry or hesitate to wipe my phone if I had an issue. It isn't downloading the apps that bother me, it's searching for each one individually.
For some reason the epic doesnt have the back up data thing that aosp phones do.
When you sign in, it automatically redownloads and installs everyapp you had installed.
Also, on market.android.com you can see everything youve downloaded and install it by hand.
I agree that its stupid the epic is missing that feature. My hero running cm6 has it

Wow, never knew about this. So if I wipe my phone, I can log into market.android.com and it will redownload all of my apps for me? As nice as it would be to have it all on the device, logging in to the website isn't bad at all!
A lot of the reviews of the Amazon Appstore never seem to mention what I personally think is a killer feature: sorting and filtering.
At any step of the way, you can choose to only view 3+/4+/5+ star apps, among other options. As soon as I heard about the new store, before it even came out, I had high hopes for sorting, knowing it's one of the great features of Amazon.com.
Google tends to shun sorting/filtering in favor of typed search queries. You can see this in the almost religious devotion to search in gmail, where sorting by anything but date is impossible without using a third party client--and this limitation is vehemently defended by Gmail supporters.
In this regard, I think Amazon will remain on top. I just don't see Google backpeddling on this philosophy, and the Android Market will remain dominated by algorithms and search queries.

A little off topic but Sense 2.0 ROMS do that also. I've been running Myn's and Mik's Desire Z ports on my Evo and whenever you log back in with your Gmail account all of your apps, paid and free, automatically start downloading to the phone. Pretty neat feature.
Yep, got a Wifi Xoom today, and sure enough about 90% of my installed apps came over...all of my purchased apps are available for redownload.
Same thing happened when I switched from HeroC to Epic.
This re-download was a new feature of 2.2, and you have to have 2.2 and be going to 2.2+ to restore.

[Q] [Noob Q]Extract a nandroid?

I recently had to get a replacement Evo because my old one did some crazy stuff, and I was reading that it isn't a good idea to restore backups across devices. But I was wondering if I could extract the backups made, gather what I need (mainly I just want my sms history) and put it in the appropriate spot on the new phone. (same ROM obviously). Is this doable? (or am I actually safe restoring the nandroid, save for wimax obviosuly)
This is the exact same model, and as far as I know same hardware revision (I'll know when it arrives).

There's an app in the market called appextractor. This app will allow you to restore sms, mms, apk's, wifi settings, and much more from a nandroid backup. I really suggest buying it to show your appreciation to the developer.

Big thanks to you for this, I'm a little paranoid about these things seeing how I almost had to pay the $100 deductable since Sprint found out I'd rooted. (got the "if you root again we'll mark it as such" speech, which just says to me "go somewhere else if your phone breaks")
edit: will it work with a TWRP nandroid though?
Get away from TWRP

Yes, I know that, but my last nandroid is a TWRP. Is there any way to get the data from it, or would I have to re-flash it long enough to do a restore before switching back to Amon? (reading the description of the app bigshortob22 linked, it appears it'll only work with .img files and CWM)

[Q] De-bloated EL30 ROM with latest updates?

I have the pre-rooted stock EL30 ROM from this forum. It's nice enough but the version of Superuser in it isn't the latest and now Google has released a new update to Market, calling it Play Store, plus Google Books has been updated.
For de-bloating, dump Football, Nascar, TeleNav, Amazon MP3, DLNA, SprintTV, Sprint Zone, MediaHub, the Asphalt 5 and Free HD Game stubs and the tutorials.
ThinkFree Office could stay.
Thanks for doing the hard work so we who aren't Android uber-geeks don't have to!

Exactly this. Just update your stuff from the "Play store" and use Root Explorer or SDX App removal tool to delete the apps you don't want. Devs are not in the habit of making custom ROMs for one person. They won't come and make your bed either.
Where did I ask just for me and only me? Everyone using rooted stock EL30 would appreciate it.
Having the updates integrated creates a cleaner install.
Here's the same answer only not as rude:
Everyone has a different idea of what "bloat" is. for instance, you think thinkfree and books should stay. Lots of people think that is bloat. Since you are already rooted its real easy and quick to remove what you don't want. As far as the updates, they hit way to often to keep them current. Just let the phone update itself.

Keyword here is STOCK. That ROM is for people who want the ability to choose which STOCK apps they wish to keep. If you want all of the apps listed in your first post removed, choose any other custom ROM. They will most likely have those removed.

You are asking for a burger with no pickles and extra mayo. True some may want exactly what you are asking for, others may want Nascar still in there just as an example. These are very easy things for you to do yourself. Sleeper has a lite version EL30 ROM already out. CleanGB has most bloat removed. These already exist. All you have to do is update an app or two yourself and delete anything you feel is extra. Last I checked the EL30 users here are very happy with these ROMs. Try one. If you need help making it perfect for you, download it and ask for what to do and we will help you. You can open the zip, pull files out of the system\app directory before flashing and it will be your personal version.
But kenny, we all have real lives and the devs just sit around all day waiting for us to make insane requests to give them something to do.

I'd keep the NASCAR app if it was actually worth the bother. Much of the time it doesn't work and it's always a lap or two behind.

NFL Mobile + root = no go???

So as some of you may already know, the latest update for the NFL Mobile app (came out this morning I think) has officially killed its functionality with rooted (or "non stock Android") devices. A story on Android Police can be see here.
At any rate, I saw a recent post on a GSIII forum (here)where the user claimed to have a workaround which, among other things, involved renaming the superuser.apk, however if you're using CM nowadays then you'll know there really isn't a separate apk - instead it is now integrated into the rom. That being said, does anyone have any idea similar to this that might work for tricking the app into thinking it isn't running on a rooted unit? I have no clue myself, but seeing as how no one has started a dedicated thread for this in the forum of the current Google flagship phone, I thought I'd get things started.
Thanks in advance people!
Well I guess it looks like no one has any ideas...? Oh well, a rare swing-and-a-miss for solutions in the xda community
A quick fix would be to just find the apk for an older version and install that one. That's what I'm currently trying to do, there's no reason for then to block us from using it just because we're rooted.

Well yeah, I mean I already uninstalled and then restored a backed up version of the app using Titanium Backup. The problem is - and if you've been a user of the NFL apps over the last year or two then you'll know this - that the NFL app is not like most apps where each upgrade just adds some incremental upgrades or changes. With this app the upgrades are typically pushed out right before the start of the key timeframes of the NFL season: usually an update right before preseason; another before the start of the regular season; another at the start of the playoffs; another right before the Super Bowl; and once more right before the draft in April. Each update is specific to that time period of the season and usually contains the critical information/tweaks/additions/UI alterations specific for that segment of the year. Point being, after missing an update or two, the app becomes extremely outdated and eventually useless. And that's why, in the mid-to-long term, just using the older version of the apk unfortunately isn't a useful alternative. Damn you NFL! Now we just have to hope the xda community will come to the rescue as they usually are able to do

Ooooh gotcha. I didn't realize that that's how NFL ran their app. That's really annoying.
i'm not rooted, but that does seem like somebody went off the deep end with this app. rooting a device won't hurt their revenue, in fact, it will probably increase it from allowing ALL Android (and iOS) devices access the app. instead, they're cutting off access to a HUGE chunk of their fans, present and future. in essence, they're biting the hand that feeds them.
i voted the app down in the app store out of principal alone.
I am extremely displeased with this as well and am searching for a solution. Leave it to Verizon to try to control how you use YOUR phone.
hey is this an nfl app for verizon or a market version for all?

From what I gather there are two different versions - the one that comes on Verizon phones, and the one that anyone else can grab from the Play Store. I have the Play Store version (as a TMo customer).

Awesome, sounds good
Just in posting my thread I got a ton of hits of people freaking out about the new app...lol
FYI, they have fixed the app and it is now working perfectly fine on rooted devices strait from the play store
I might be the only one it's not working for. Wondering if anyone can help.
I cannot get 95% of the buttons to work in the Fantasy section of the app. Not only that, when I said 'to hell with the app' and went to their mobile site (which looks exactly like the app), I got the same thing... 95% of the buttons on the mobile site wouldn't do anything.
Now, on my N7, everything works fine.
Any ideas?
Edit: It was Ad Away. Can't use the app while it's running. Now I'll try to find the hosts file and see if I can edit the NFL entries out of it.
