Dual boot wp7 - Epic 4G General

Idk how possible this is... But once we get vanilla gb ported to the epic it would be awesome to be able to dualboot with wp7 too. Anyone know how possible this is?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

No possible at all, wp7 has a device identifier built in and the epic wouldn't be recognized
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

not to mention that wp7 only runs on snapdragon hardware that exists on the evo not epic.

Could be wrong here, but doesn't the Samsung Focus have a Hummingbird chip?

No, it has a Snapdragon CPU.
I can post many links for this, but I'll just go with this one:

Having a choice in operating systems would be amazing. I just wish phone hardware was at least as open as PC hardware
I wouldn't choose to run WP7 personally, but the ideology of having multiple OS choices for a device you bought is great. I'd love to have meego on our phones

Ya I doubt microsoft would be happy about that. From what I remember they've been pretty quick to squash the WP7 hacking community. Which is stupid because a hacking community really makes or breaks a phone OS imo. We're not the majority but we're a very loud minority and the things people like our devs do are things that (more often than not) make the phones better and are sometimes taken note of by the corporate devs.

i just thought it would be awesome, idk, wp7 just looks fun, i still prefer android over it, but itd just be fun to see how fast it would go on a hummingbird. i knew all the wp7s had snapdragons, but i didnt know they had to have snapdragons.... was a cool dream while it lasted i guess, maybe a dev or something will try and find a workaround

[Q] WP7?

i have seen that samsung is releasing a windows phone, and it's got all the same specs as our beloved galaxy s. except we have 16 Gb of internal storage, and the windows phone only has 8 Gb. so that brought me to wonder, if there is anybody looking into getting WP7 working on the galaxy s line of phones. i am an avid xbox live gamer, and also am a zune member, so this would be great for me. especially if there was a way to dual boot my phone for both android and wp7.
Aww man dual boot would be amazing.

So far all I see is wm guys wanting android on their phones, really none of us ex wm users care for it, which is why we switched in the first place.
And then there is the licensing issue, wm isnt free.
just sell your vibrant and buy a wp7 phone. Just warning you though, you will be disappointed.

Exactly. You can't legally port WM to anything. Even if you did get a working port, Microsoft would take it down immediately.

The devs for MS market place are facing big hurdles getting their apps up because MS has a final say what gets publish and what doesn't. There is no "jailbreak" or "root" concept either, so you are stuck with whatever guys in Redmond decided is good for you.

I'm on a Vibrant, I had a HTC Touch Diamond (WM 6). Windows 7 is going to be such a huge improvement from 6. If you haven't watched the demo videos for 7, go look at em. Dont get me wrong, I love my Vibrant, but don't hate on it till you've taken a good look. The UI looks pretty kick ass in my opinion but I think W7 is designed for a different crowd of people from what you find on the XDA forums judging by their commercials.

The one thing you will miss from moving to WP7 is the community. I am sure a new community will grow around the phone is no time just like Android did when G1 was release, and when root was found, the community boomed. Same thing happened with iPhone and jailbreaking, it's just matter of time.
I say wait a while and see, if it is good, jump ship, if not you can always stay with Android.
Actually the community for windows is there. I first found xda developers when I was looking for mods for my MDA that was years before android dropped. Look over in some of the windows forums they are there. Its just that windows got stale, other than a couple HTC skins WM has been nearly the same since 2003. They really just updated it to work better with new hardware.
I'm sure WM7 will bring a little fire back. I'd like to try it out. My first smartphone was a Wm phone, and there are things I still miss like the contacts a Calender.

i love the android OS. i love my vibrant. i just thought about how cool it would to be to dual boot with wp7. i didn't think about licensing though. i forgot that windows mobile isn't open source like android is, so it'll be harder, if even possible to get windows on an android device! but it's ok to wish. maybe in the future i'll get a wp7 phone. then dual boot with android on that. or keep my vibrant and have the best of both worlds. i should wait anyway to see how wp7 turns out, but i really like the involvement of xbox live and zune! i do have to say, even if wp7 is amazing, it's going to be hard to catch up with android. i can see this is going to be just like the pc world. android(linux) vs. iOS(apple) vs WP7(Windows). andbody see a trend?

WP7 on Epic 4g?

How likely is it that we may see some sort of dual boot, or rom that runs WP7 on our epic's? I know sammy made 1 or 2 wp7 phones, and I assume they use the same chipset as the galaxy s line?? Just thought it wuldbe neat to be able to do this. I think wp7 looks pretty cool....just not cool enough to switch from android. Lol

1) This has been asked around 5 times already
2) No its not the same stuff..WP7 version uses a 1st gen snapdragon as its the only allowed cpu at this point, we have a hummingbird cpu
3) No one is going to develop is cause M$ will sue them to next millennium...Android is ported to other phones cause its open source..WP7 is not...and they let HD2 slide because they still make money on winmo licenses..on Android phone they make no money off you..so they'll sue you to next millennium...

Sorry bro, you'd be better off sticking to a GSM network and owning multiple handsets if you want to do that.
A) aside from the CPU issue, WP7 still isn't out with CDMA support yet, and
B) even if it were possible, the android community would be hard pressed to pull it off largely out of mindset. Nothing is more important than free choice--as long as you choose open.
Remember, modern tech is more about elitism and team sports (us vs. them) than an unbiased love to tinker. Welcome.
/as much as I dig Android, the exclusionary mindset of its userbase just might drive me away some day

The biggest hurdle that I see is that WP7 is a closed-source system. Getting Android to run on a device is considerable easier because all it takes is getting a Linux kernel to boot on a device then getting the JVM to boot the actual software. Linux is open source. AOSP is, well, open source. So, at that point, it's just an understanding of the hardware and how to get the kernel to play nice with it.
This is completely different with WP7. We don't have kernels to play with. It would involve reverse-engineering and redistributing closed-source, proprietary, licensed software... which is, obviously, illegal. And no small task, to boot.
I wouldn't mind having a WP7 device just to see what it's about, but this device isn't it.
Yeah I forgot about the whole closed source proprietary thing...and mircsofts lawyers. Lol. I knew the snapdragon was their baseline but wasn't sure what chips sammy was usng for their wp7 phones. It was just a thought. I haven't used a wp7 device, I just think the ui looks pretty neat. But I guess you can accomplish close to the same thing with themed launchers. I still can't decide if the whole open source, do what you want is a good thing for android or what will eventually turn people away from it.

You got it. i'll pass that along to HTC. i'm SURE they'll listen and jump on it straightaway.
Seriously though, the ipad is difficult to beat. they did actually make a major upgrade in the new A5 processor with dual core. they also thinned it out a bit, the rest is mediocre like you said.
HTC already announced it, it's called the HTC Flyer and it doesn't look all that good. Single core running a tablet like sense on top of 2.3.
Here is the real concern... will honeycomb really be ready for primetime? All the videos I have seen of the xoom are choppy and crash quite a bit. I have yet to be blown away. However look at the stock evo. If it wasn't for cm7, I would be looking for something else. Why can't the manufacturers get it right. Perhaps they need some schooling form cyan?
Just saying.

You just defined what Cyanogenmod is in your own post and discredited it at the same time.
Obviously I know that CM uses AOSP. My point is that a lot of their work is dependent on the release of OEM source (drivers, etc). If they had to take AOSP and port Android to an entirely new device/hardware it'd be a different story. They add a lot of cool extra functionality but a lot of what they do is clean up existing code.

"a lot of their work" .... I don't think you understand what they do.
The _only_ thing they depend on the OEM source for is the kernel for the drivers because, obviously, they don't write the drivers. The rest of 2.3.3 that my EVO is running is compiled directly against the Google released source.
If they needed the OEM source how are they _ahead_ of every OEM out there right now in releases? No device they support has official GB yet. None.
Theres a reason you can only get GB on AOSP and no Sense based ROMs have it. They aren't waiting on HTC for anything beyond the drivers in the kernel ... which they got in November when they finally released the 004 camera drivers (unless a 005 surfaces).

I was replying to the poster who said that OEMs should be consulted by CM. I'm just saying that OEMs have to get Android running on the hardware period, not to mention develop/design their overlays, which as much as I hate, are far more encompassing than the features/tweaks CM adds. Bottom line: they got much more to worry about than mostly just cleaning up. Not trying to discredit CM, just suggesting not to downplay the bigger role OEMs have in the process.
Thank you for the laugh of the day. VERRY WELL SAID?

I've got the answer. The hardware is so similar between the vendors now, so google should set the standard (not the crappy half assed job they did before) and do an X-Prize type contest. Make one kick butt tablet and have the best minds compete. No skins, no bloatware, just a solid device. Sure they burn a lot of bridges with their vendors, but everyone would want it, and Google comes out ahead in the long run. Truly compete against apple with an open platform. The gPhone!

It fills a niche. I personally have a hard time buying any of the "phone" tablets because if I'm on a computer 99% of the time I either have a IDE/Photoshop/Illustrator open. None of the current tablets will able to do what I need. But Windows 7 is not really fit for tablet - I used to have a Tablet PC running Windows 7 and you might as well just get a decent dual core Atom netbook (which I do have) because it's not worth it.
What I'm waiting for is Windows 8. It'll probably be very touch friendly in desktop mode and is suppose to have a secondary WP7/Metro-like shell which I assume will also be able to run mobile/tablet-like mini apps. Either use it like a iPad/Xoom/whatever or dock it to a keyboard and get real **** done. Best of both worlds and it'll probably work great with next gen Atoms or energy sipping multiple core ARM CPUs.
Can I just say that the guy bagging on CM7 is a douche? Can this be a "douche-bump" post?

are you talking to me? Because CM is just about the only ROM I use and the reason why I even got the EVO in the first place. I think you're completely missing my point.
Someone said that OEMs (like HTC, Samsung) should get consulted by the CM team. I said its not a fair comparison because:
A. Most of the time CM depends on OEM provided drivers to get CM running. That in itself can be a hard thing to implement from scratch on a new device. Android isn't like Windows where you can buy a license and Microsoft provides full support.
B. OEM skins like Sense and Touchwiz are much bigger projects than the tweaks/functions that CM adds.
I just thought that poster was undervaluing how much the OEM has to do, and that getting consulted by the CM team is probably not as valuable to them as he thinks.
If any team should do contracting/consulting, it should be the MIUI team. Their work is incredibly impressive and covers a far larger scope than CM. At least they do a consumer/user friendly job at modifying/skinning Android - the best on Android in fact, OEM skins/overlays included.
Anyway, you took this way too personally and over blown it (why?) way beyond what it is. I appreciate and use CM but am not disillusioned or completely uninformed by the reality of consumer development.

Thoughts on WebOS?

Since the latest Palm phones were announced, I've been wondering if I should switch to a palm phone. I've always loved how WebOS worked. I would have probably gotten a WebOS phone had there been a Palm phone with the Evo internals.
And out of curiosity I checked Sprint to see if the palm pad was listed, unsurprisingly, it wasn't. What did surprise me was that the Palm Pre was NOT listed anymore.
I like web os but iys like the red heades step child of phone platforms. Not to much dev support like for android phones and i got frustrated with the lack of apps in the store. Though it is amazing platform jus not getting recognition but who know maybe hp can change all that we will see
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
It was definitely cool to mess around with.. but like jesz said... not a lot of support.
I also had a ton of issues with it... exchanging for faulty hardware (headphone jack) to getting software updates that fixed some issues but broke other things.. it was a mess.
Hopefully HP does really well... competition is never a bad thing.
If HP released the Pre 3 right now I would probably get it. I found it my Pre to be the most amazing device I've used so far, I think I was one of the few to have a good build. I could care less about dev support because really I only used a core of 15 apps or so and thats all I use for Android. I love my Evo dearly but if Sprint doesn't announce a successor...

Any new mobile OS's coming out soon

I like android and all but it just gets old just like if I had the iPhone for awhile it would get old too. I'm tired of all the new phones coming out being android because its all the same with a little hardware change. If I'm going to get a new device I don't want it to be a android cause the evo is a great phone and there no need to upgrade it to something that really doesn't do much more besides have a nicer screen or a faster processer. So does anyone know if any new OS coming to the market soon to keep things fresh?

Had a palm pre if they could get the hardware right it would be a good os if they placed that os in something like the evos hardware it would have been a success. But it still needs far better apps and someone to restrict the crap they put in there market. Anyways I'm tired of that os too.

Sounds like you have a really short attention span.
A.d.d. perhaps?
Without the release of new OSes, you could always jump from OS to OS with each upgrade to switch it up a bit, Android > WP7 > WebOS > iPhone (where available) etc... By the time you make the rounds, years will have passed and the OS may be much different from what you remember.
On another note, there was rumor that Motorola was working on their own OS, we'll see if that comes to fruition, and Nokia has a new OS, Meego, that is linux based and supposed to be pretty smooth. Since we don't see many Nokias here, I am not sure if we will see Meego (though I do believe it has been ported to the HD2- along with every other OS).
Honeycomb is a pretty big changeup

On your xoom? I don't think we'll see that version of HC on our mobile phones...
I'd love to see a pretty solid Meego phone come out in the near future, it seems like the next best thing to Android.
Also, I wouldn't touch any proprietary Motorola OS with a ten-foot pole....
If palm/HP partnered with HTC and started making manly 4" phones and not little black Easter eggs webOS would bend android over and make it beg for mercy.

...AND have the same (or hell, any) dev interest.
My wife had the pre and the pixi. I didn't like webos. Won't be trying it again any time soon.
Can you please explain what features your missing that android or ios don't have?
Would you be pleased if they made another platform exactly like android or ios and just called it something else.... like "Humpty-Dumpty"? That's be something new I suppose...
Or you can just try Wp7.
In all reality though, there are more than likely no more os's coming out for phones at least for a while. Between android, ios, and wp7 there is really no reason...
