Google Maps 5.0 update now available through android market
Check it out
is the 3d view only available in some cities? i can rotate my map but no 3d is available?
3d is only in some cities. L.a. for example. Though I can't figure out how to rotate or change the angle.

I can't find Google Maps in Market on froyo (regular, not rooted)... Any idea?
Seems like we got everything except rotate functionality.
@nolook: Check out Toronto for some 3D action, it's there.
@thunderpossuem: to change the angle place two fingers side by side on the screen and wipe down, repeat the same while wiping up to return to an overhead view.
I can't seem to rotate though which is a shame, still a great update.
Try as I might, I just can't make it work. Not that it really worries me. We don't have any of that 3d business over in Brisbane

I can't find in on a market too. Can somebody please publish the installer here.

your right toronto has 3d buildings...very cool...compass feature/offline browsing are also extremely useful features...
maybe rotate will be added or maybe the legend doesnt have that type of multitouch...
Rotate does work on the legend. tap on the "center on my location" button, and tap once more, the burton will change into a compass. There are two modes. One of them will rotate the map when you rotate your phone.

Not quite the same thing as actually rotating it with your fingers, now is it?
So no, from the point of multitouch, rotate isn't working.

I can get the 3D buildings in the applicable cities, but I can't change the angle while wiping down with two fingers. I didn't think that changing the angle was supported for the Legend. Is it actually working for you?

yes i can change the angle but it seems to have a limited range of motion...
wtf maps aren't even loading, not even on wifi.

I don't have change angle and I don't have the compass mode. It only centers on my location and thats it. I'm on Cyanogen mod maybe thats why.
Tilting now working after updating CM6.1 to the experimental kernel oO

Hi guyz, Do these features work only on froyo? My legend is still on 2.1 (as froyo update in not released here in Aus). I didn't find anything new in google maps 5. No 3d views of any cities, no tilt/rotate, no compass mode. Same old tiled-maps .
In UK looks like Cardiff, Birmingham & Leeds have 3d features.
In Brum I can see city centre in 3d, tilt & rotate with compass all very smoothly.
Very Nice!

Hello,
I'd like to use my Ameo with "vertical" screen when I'm travelling and horizontal when Keyboard is attached in the office.
However, I have to switch back to vertical always manually once the keyboard was attached.
Is there a possibility to have the screen automatically always vertical without keyboard and horizontal when keyboard is attached ?
Dieter
Im looking for a similar functionaltiy.
Me to, this would be so useful.
you don't have to do it automatically, it is easy to switch the comm manager physical button to the rotate screen functionality- every time you touch the button the screen rotates - fantastic
i think the point was though that we use the device in portrait and only when we attach the keyboard it flips, and in a ideal world when we remove the keybaord we wanted it to go back to portrait as that is what we always use. pressing a button is easy but not quite prefect.
As an alternative to using the physical button (4 modes of rotation, the original only has 3 modes):

What does this CAB do? Would you mind posting a screenshot if possible?
Basically it's a screen rotator (just like the one that comes built-in with our Athena). The difference is that you have a better control of setting its behaviour through the Settings tab).
With the built-in rotator, I have to tap it twice to revert back to my potrait orientation from landscape. With this, I only has to tap it once (set it to Clockwise).

or you can just use iLuncher, it does exactly the same, it's a built in shortcut for iLuncher. one click for rotate, and one click to rotate back.

Thanks for the utility. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for...well not exactly, would be nice if it would go to Portrait when the keyboard is detached and back when it's reattached...but after further consideration it would be annoying if it did it automatically because i don't always want this to happen. Took me a little while to find the 'Advanced/Icon Settings' area...lack of sleep. I was looking for something that would go between Portrait and Landscape without rotating all the way around. I've set it up for "Right or Portrait" and this is exactly what I wanted, a type of toggle between the two modes. Thanks for posting this for us.
I'm lousy at explaining the way thing works. But I'm very happy to know you understand after trying the program yourself. A little apps with big function for people who like to switch back to potrait orientation.

you're my hero. thx.
i've been looking all over the net to find out how to get screen rotate into my advantages' taskbar (nothing worked, no tweaks, nothing).
works perfectly now. thx so much.
the thing that would make my taskbar perfect is a way to get the battery symbol INCLUDING link to the battery settings in it.
anyone an idea? i tried several tweaks, one worked but only showed the icon without any link. the others didn't work at all, dunno why.
You can tie this to a hardware button
This has been used on this forum for over 2 years. Someone may find it useful. Not "automatic" like asked for.
Install the cab file from your device and go into settings and set as one of the start menu items and 2 clicks give you a rotation and back, not round in circles like stock.
When you bind to a hardware button, one click rotates, another returns

bug report...
Found a bug. On my Advantage, the camera stopped working in Landscape mode. May or may not be attributed to the screen rotate cab. A simple fix is to go to Portrait mode and start the camera from there. It could also be related to the VGA software but not sure. I'm glad I found a quick and easy work around because I didn't feel like hard resetting yet again.
Update: Found a work around. I wasn't going to hard reset. While playing around I noticed that if I switched to portrait mode and opened the camera, it would come up properly. Just won't do it if I try to open the camera while in landscape. Weird bug but I can live with it.

Paul,
the program you are looking for are Gsen or gyrator, please do a search on screen rotation before you post.
and..
I was also hoping to get some info regarding navigation applications that nativity operate in landscape.
Tomtom rotated would be good but not optimized for wide screen.
Thanks

actualy tomtom rotated looks mighty fine on my touch hd, the map is not stretched. you get to see more map on both sides due to the wide screen.
i don't know if there are any winmobile gps applications that natively renders in landscap. but that could be me.
I have TomTom 7 and use Gyrator 2 with no problem at all.

I've just checked and I have all the landscape / portrait switching in the laters 1.66 ROM that I had in 1.48. I know it's unlikely but could you have relied on an additional application to manage the switching that now needs to be reinstalled? Not trying to teach you to suck eggs just making a suggestion.
Regards.

Install BsB Tweaks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=589305
Yes using BSB will provide increased configuration options for screen rotation. I'm thinking though that, as the the screen rotation and Gsensor functionality is not disabled by the upgrade to 1.66 for me or others (I think there would have been more "noise" here if this was a "standard" anomoly experienced by others in relation to this update) perhaps there is a technical fault? Perhaps BSB would not be able to help in that case but you could always try. Screen rotation, landscape mode should work with or without BSB tweaks (to a greater or lesser extent). Maby HTC technical support could help if you can't get it working.
Regards).

Would I be right in thinking that the problem is you can only go into landscape mode with certain things, like the photos and videos tab, or opera?
If this is the case, then you're absolutely right. Out of the box, landscape only works in a few places. It still doesn't work on Sense in general, even with tweaks that are available here.
Or is it that nothing works landscape for you?

I get landscape in camera, photos, music and in Opera and Internet Explorer and then texting and emailing.
But no G-sensor turn then I access Windows start menu holding the phone in landscape position and generally the g-sensor only works then turning from portrait and tilting the phone to the right. Not to the left. the driver not fully implemented?

It's software mate - nothing to do with drivers. It's just the way Sense works.
You'll need to use 3rd party software if you want to do anything other than "default" rotation (as you described), in the apps that you mentioned.
BsB Tweaks allows you to add applications to the list off "rotatable" ones. I've also done an app myself (see PLToggle in my sig), but that works differently. It's triggered by holding the call button down, and just toggles between standard orientation and an orientation of your choice (any of the other 3). It depends what you want to do really, but BsB offers the ability to rotate the screen when you rotate the device, but only in that 1 direction.
There are obviously other apps out there. I'm just giving you a couple of options.
Hope it helps

I don't think that it's a limitation. It's just the way it works. I guess it's a preference thing as it doesn't bother me.
I do know that most of Sense can't be rotated succesfully, but that obviously wouldn't stop them making auto-rotation work everywhere else. The option's there to turn on and off. I guess that's enough for most.

I expect we'll see more of it in later versions of manila, but that's just a hunch.
On my Google maps I would like for the map to be oriented in the direction I'm travelling. (So the map turns while I turn)
So I'm always driving toward the top of the screen. As it is now sometimes it shows me driving sideways or down. It's easy enough to do on my Garmin, but I can't find a setting for this on my Google maps, I'm using a MyTouch3G by the way.
Also one other question. I'm using the new 3.4 version and I noticed when I had the 'Compass' on, the map didn't move while I was driving, and I would drive off the screen till I pressed 'My Location' to recenter the map.
Anyone else notice this?
I turned off the compass, and the map movement returned to normal with the map moving around me, and me centered in the map.
Every time I've used the navigation of Google Maps the map always moves around me so I'm always traveling "forward." Although, I don't believe I've ever had the compass turned on in my maps. If I remember I'll test on the way to work and check back.

But there's two different things. I didn't try navigation today, maybe if I had nav on it would orient the way I like it.
The problem with me driving off the map was just with compass on though.
When I had compass off the map would scroll, keeping me in the center, but the orientation was North always up, I'd rather have 'heading' up even with navigation off.
Ah, I don't believe I've ever had "heading up" outside of nav before. I'll just play with the compass and see what happens haha
Tried it out....here are my results:
Normal map with compass: no "heading up" display, the compass never showed up either, but my map did scroll keeping my location in the center.
Normal map without compass: still no "heading up" display and the map kept my location in the center.
Nav with compass: this was displayed with "heading up" and it also showed a compass with it (of course scrolling with my progress).
Nav without compass: no different than above...still had a compass even.
Adding and removing the compass was done through "Spare Parts" on my phone.

Thanks Sleeve, nice work. I used Nav tonight and had heading up also. Are you using the new 3.4 version? It has 'compass' in it's menu. Doesn't show a compass, just directs the arrow even when you're not moving.
How to bookmark locations?
Well using nav a little more today, and found another question if anyone knows the answer.
I'd like to be able to save locations, like my house, and various addresses. To something like favorites or bookmarks. But can't find any place to do that. I can find locations easily enough with the map or just typing in, but how to save them for future use?

Got it.
Now I ran into something else. A few days ago when I'd search for 'Walmart' it would give me a text list of the nearby walmarts with address and I could pick which one I wanted from the list.
Today it is just giving me red pushpins on the map, not a list. I can still find the one I want by scrolling the map 'IF' I know where to look. How do I get the option for a text list back?
Thanks.

Ah, so thats why my little navigation dot wasn't a dot anymore, it was an arrow haha. Either way it kept me in the center at all times.
I've searched the xda-developers > T-Mobile USA HTC HD2 > T-Mobile USA HD2 General forum threads for an answer and also popped into Google for a few rounds of "Guess your real search terms", but haven't found anything yet.
I would like to see a true Accelerometer-based rotation for our phones, especially the Home Screen.
Yes, I am aware that many of the programs like the camera, SMS, Opera, etc. have this availability, but I was thinking of something more like what the iPod Touch / iPhone can do.
Does anyone know if this is in the works by htc?
Is this something that could possibly be done in a kitchen?

Yeah, not so much.
If you're using several modified versions of Manila files, it will not "break" the scrolling or screens at all.
Sense 2.5 supports landscape orientation, just NOT for devices without hardware keyboards.
Anyway, yeah... I've used "BsB Tweaks v1.6" to support landscape orientation for all of the Manila home screens. The only screen that has issues is within PEEP. Nowhere else have I come across issues while using landscape mode.
I've used the "Rotate Screen" program to change between Landscape and Portrait, but that's not what I was looking for.
I want to be able to switch between Portrait (0) to Landscape (270) to Portrait (180) to Landscape (90), back to Portrait (0 or 360) just by turning the phone.
If you've ever played with the Album on an iPod Touch, you'll know what I mean.
Basically, if I turn my phone sideways, the screen should shift to match as Landscape (270), then if I turn it so that the speaker is down and the mic is up (90), the screen should be upside down, portrait style, all the way around until I return my phone to the usual mic-down, speaker up portrait style, effectively making a 360-degree turn, with the screen following all the way.
I realize this is probably complicated to read, it was certainly hard to write
