Google maps Heading Up? - G1 General

On my Google maps I would like for the map to be oriented in the direction I'm travelling. (So the map turns while I turn)
So I'm always driving toward the top of the screen. As it is now sometimes it shows me driving sideways or down. It's easy enough to do on my Garmin, but I can't find a setting for this on my Google maps, I'm using a MyTouch3G by the way.
Also one other question. I'm using the new 3.4 version and I noticed when I had the 'Compass' on, the map didn't move while I was driving, and I would drive off the screen till I pressed 'My Location' to recenter the map.
Anyone else notice this?
I turned off the compass, and the map movement returned to normal with the map moving around me, and me centered in the map.

Every time I've used the navigation of Google Maps the map always moves around me so I'm always traveling "forward." Although, I don't believe I've ever had the compass turned on in my maps. If I remember I'll test on the way to work and check back.

Thanks!
But there's two different things. I didn't try navigation today, maybe if I had nav on it would orient the way I like it.
The problem with me driving off the map was just with compass on though.
When I had compass off the map would scroll, keeping me in the center, but the orientation was North always up, I'd rather have 'heading' up even with navigation off.

Ah, I don't believe I've ever had "heading up" outside of nav before. I'll just play with the compass and see what happens haha

Tried it out....here are my results:
Normal map with compass: no "heading up" display, the compass never showed up either, but my map did scroll keeping my location in the center.
Normal map without compass: still no "heading up" display and the map kept my location in the center.
Nav with compass: this was displayed with "heading up" and it also showed a compass with it (of course scrolling with my progress).
Nav without compass: no different than above...still had a compass even.
Adding and removing the compass was done through "Spare Parts" on my phone.

Thanks Sleeve, nice work. I used Nav tonight and had heading up also. Are you using the new 3.4 version? It has 'compass' in it's menu. Doesn't show a compass, just directs the arrow even when you're not moving.

How to bookmark locations?
Well using nav a little more today, and found another question if anyone knows the answer.
I'd like to be able to save locations, like my house, and various addresses. To something like favorites or bookmarks. But can't find any place to do that. I can find locations easily enough with the map or just typing in, but how to save them for future use?

Got it.
Now I ran into something else. A few days ago when I'd search for 'Walmart' it would give me a text list of the nearby walmarts with address and I could pick which one I wanted from the list.
Today it is just giving me red pushpins on the map, not a list. I can still find the one I want by scrolling the map 'IF' I know where to look. How do I get the option for a text list back?
Thanks.

hit the list icon on the lower left corner

Ah, so thats why my little navigation dot wasn't a dot anymore, it was an arrow haha. Either way it kept me in the center at all times.

Google Maps and Wallpaper questions

Hi,
I've searched and can't find the answers to my questions. I don't know if I'm using seach right, but if I type in google maps I get a list that's nothing to do with google maps
Anyway, the google maps question. I've just used this program for the first time today as was stuck in traffic and wanted to look for an alternative root. When I was driving along I noticed that the screen doesn't follow you. The blue dot moved as I did, but once it got to the end of the screen it carried on off the screen, and the screen/map didn't move along with it to track me. How do I get it to do this?
And the wallpaper question. I can't find a way to resize the pictures I choose as the lockscreen wallpaper so that it fits the screen properly, how do I do this? The picture is too zoomed in so it cuts a lot of it off.
Cheers
Google: Hope this is not a dumb question: did you do >Menu>Use GPS?
On re-sizing images: I don't think there's an app on the HD2 to do it. If you go to a regular PC or Mac graphics app, you can connect put the image on the SD card, connect your HD2 to your computer as an external disk drive, and then re-format the image to 480x800 pixels, then save it back.

When searching for a phrase, use quotes around the search criteria, such as "google maps". That will look for the two words together. If you search for google maps, you'll get anything with either word in it.
With google maps, it will use the network to detect your location, so I don't know why it kept going when you stopped, and it should always remain centered on the blue dot, so it sounds like the map stopped moving when you did. Anyway, just turn on GPS from the menu.
As for wallpaper, you're really better off resizing the image manually on your PC. There's plenty of software out there (freeware) for editing and manipulating images. Just google for that. As I'm sure you're aware, you'll need to resize to 480x800 for the lockscreen.
Hope this helps

Google Maps
If you touch the blue dot (bottom right) I think it follows you. if you manually move the map after that, it stops.
I'm in an office right now so can't check but i'm pretty sure that's what happens.

Good point - I couldn't figure out why it would just stop moving and let the dot go off the screen.
Thanks for the responses. Iill try the google maps again on the way home. I did have GPS on, but maybe I moved the screen.
Just to clarify what I meant in the meantime though. The page/map remained stationary, only the blue dot moved as I moved. The blue dot obviously moved further and further along the road and carried right on off the screen. The page/map did not then move along with it, so I was just left with the map showing where I had started from, and not knowing where I was at the present time.
Is that any clearer, or more confusing
I'll just have to manually resize the picture then, little annoying, but not the end of the world

As paullong said, you must have manually moved the map. This makes it stop following you, but the dot still shows where you are. The map just doesn't center on it any more.
If that happens, press the blue square with a dot in it at the bottom right and will center back in on you.

Alternative explanation: you were out of range of a data service so Google couldn't pull down maps fast enough .

That wouldn't stop the map moving. It just stops the map downloading.
It's working fine, must have moved the map before. Pressed the blue dot and all works fine.
Many thanks

Street View?

On my mt3g i used to be able to zoom in all the way to the street level on Google Maps, and it would then go into street view.
I haven't found a way to pull up street view on the Vibrant as yet however (except for when using navigation and you reach you destination...)
anyone?
If you click on any street it will popup the location information, by selecting that you can get to street view. I agree that this is a kludge, but that is the only way I have found so far.

[Q] Google Navigation kinda broken, help maybe needed!

Hey guys, have a rooted nexus 7 (hey, I'm in the right forum), running 4.2.1, and not sure when but when I went to use navigation, I have the following.
Map loads, traffic loads, and the plotted route(s) appear. Once I start driving, it does the text to speech but the whole route is more of a top down view as opposed to the old GPS style. So coming to turns depending on driving direction, I need to think, is that a right or left, since if I am driving south, things are reversed!
Anyway, I have tried starting the route in wifi area, then off wifi (which used to work) as well as bringing my 4G hot spot so I have constant internet, but the same results.
Is this a new setting I can't find, or just me missing something!
Tnx
There should be a blue google style nav arrow that pops up when you select something in the map and it goes to top view.touching that reverts back to 2d nav.If it isnt showing go to settings, apps and stop the google maps that are running and re open.

nah, it's not that. I can move the map which makes that arrow appear, but when I hit it, it's 'supposed' to fly in to the 3D version of driving, but it simply goes back to the top down view. I should have included a screenshot but did this time. If you notice as I tried to describe, that's the screen that stays there, the arrow will start to move in the correct direction, I will get the audio, turn right in 1 mile onto sreetname, etc. but that image is all I can get.
I have rebooted, stopped, etc. but regardless I get the same results. I have co-pilot, and NAVfree which work, but google is just so much nicer. Just glad I had the image this time!
Thanks
Ya that looks like the native google maps view.....Im at a loss.
The only other thing I can suggest is uninstall with titanium and extract the apk from gapps and re install.

Have you check your "Layers" setting ?? Go to the 3 dots on the upper right of N7 Navigation Screen, open up & clear any check marks inside Layers - is "Traffic view" checked ??

Actually thought, wait, but did check that. Not sure if it's the version, but the 3 dots is the settings, there is another icon, looks like 3 stacks of paper which is the layers, and all are unchecked.

Think I will give that a go. Already rooted and paid titanium, so might as well give that a shot.

Missing Navigation Icon after 4.3 update

Hi everyone who reads this, So I did my 4.3 update and now I notice the blue triangle Navigation Icon is missing, OK I might be slow here but how do I do Navigation now ? I can go into Google Now and say "Navigate to ......... " and it works, but before the 4.3 update I would turn on the navigation app and show my location on the map as I drove and t would give me traffic info etc, I can I get that back without specifying a location I am going to ? Sometimes I just want to see a map I don't want directions, like going to work, I just want to see traffic flow etc, yes sometimes I use Waze sometimes I use Google Navigation. I hope I am clear here, thanks.
They merged it all into one in maps so of you want to navigate turn on GPS and open the Google maps type in destination then on bottom right should say navigate

I thought that they might of merged into maps just not sure how to navigate, thanks for the info I will look into it .
Its confusing at first but play around with it. Type in destination in the search bar, then bottom right will show a car click on that car it'll pop up a list. Choose the desire fastest time to get to the location click on it then it'll bring you back to maps but now the bottom right should say navigate press on that and it should be on navigation

I've just updated to 4.3 and I have a Tasker task that open the Navigation app and despite there beig no navigation app on the phone, it still works.
It's indeed possible to still have the navigate shortcut working. I don't know how you should do it manually, but I did a nova launcher restore after upgrading to 4.3 and got the shortcut icon back. Still working fine, can enter a 'from' and 'to' and select the 'car', 'train', 'bike' and 'walk' method.
I think Navigation was always a part of Maps, not a separate apk, now just no separate icon.
It was weird how they came out with several updates over a couple weeks and how they tweaked the interface. First they let the Nav and Places icons stay. But then on a subsequent update they deleted them.
It's also weird how when you search for a destination you want to Nav to, you never know exactly how Google is going to present the Nav steps to you, huh?
What's really annoying is the decreased functionality of the Local/Places part of Maps. Way harder to get to and way less useful info.
About the only thing I like better in the new version of Nav is more accurate arrival time (but Waze still better), complete list of previous destinations, and switchable arrival time, minutes left and miles left.
But, you can't get to Local without quitting Nav, and Nav no longer clearly displays the name of the street you are traveling on. It always used to be listed at the bottom of the screen.
Sorry to resurrect this dead thread but I just had the same issue with the latest (11/5) maps update and I too lost the navigation icon. Here is how I got it back:
Note that I am using Nova launcher but might be the same on yours:
1. Find empty location on the home screen and press for a second or so until "Add to Home screen" appears
2. Select "Shortcuts"
3. Select "Activities"
4. Scroll down until you find "Maps", click once to expand the list.
5. Select "Navigation"
And that should be it.

Maps navigation issues?

Recently I started having issues with my 6p where if I go into the navigation part of part of maps, the arrow that is supposed to show where I am doesn't move and always points north. A lot of times it's not even aligned properly with roads and the only way to get it to update to at least close to where I am is move the map so the arrow is off screen and recenter. If I just use maps, not the navigation part, it's perfectly accurate, it shows exactly where I am and what direction I'm pointing. Anyone have any clue what's going on? I've searched all over, cleared caches, reset updates, restarted my phone all to no avail.

Under settings / navigation settings there is an option to have the map always point north. Maybe you have that enabled.

I meant the arrow that represents your position on a road etc is always point north. Not the orientation of the map.
