Is the Droid Pro selling - Droid Pro General

I just picked up a Droid Pro today. Going through various forums, it does not look like there is much interest in the phone. Is it selling well or is it something no one is buying?

Guess it just hasn't picked up the wave. People are very focused on High-end touchscreen phones which have 'uber cool' features but fail to realise this phone packs a similar hardware but a inferior screen res - which is a worthwhile compromise.

I agree. I went with it because it was a world phone and had a great keyboard. I hate motoblur though

I hate motoblur as well. I installed LauncherPro Plus and it's just like my Incredible was.

Got mine!

Agreed that it likely just doesn't get very much attention because it doesn't have a 4"+ screen. I'm sure people must be buying it though, since AFAIK it's the only Droid with a portrait keyboard. It's actually the only Droid that my company lets us use, since it's the only one with adequate security features. I've got to believe that a lot of companies have similar standards.

There's a Dell phone with a portrait slider keyboard, but the dp is the only fixed portrait qwerty. I love it - the screen resolution is just fine for me until I compare side by side with wifes inc. Keyboard is a great tradeoff in my opinion.

The problem is that the DPro is mainly directed towards the professional user. And most professionals are still going to keep their Blackberries because that's what they're familiar with and it does a good job. We can all get on here and say how much we personally love our phones but the truth of the matter is Blackberry has the corporate world pretty much locked up, and that's a good thing for them because otherwise they would not be a profitable company.
Your average Android shopper is going to get wowed by bigger screens, or prettier packages. The DPro doesn't stand a chance sitting next to the Fascinate or Droid X or even Droid 2. Now for a consumer Blackberry convert, the DPro has a lot to offer. Great new OS with familiar Form-Factor. That however isn't going to sell enough units to make this the most popular Droid out there, but I'm sure its still a profitable item.

Now if they can only fix the stuttering / skipping / choppy music playback issue

Could you elaborate on why the Droid Pro does not stand a chance sitting next to the other phones. Do you mean through sales or performance? Just curious.

It's definitely worth it to me as well. The only thing I miss having is arrow keys. I will say without hesitation that it is a royal pain in the ass to select and edit text without arrow keys. Of course adding a 4-way rocker or something like that would have meant more compromise on screen real estate. I guess they found the best of both worlds.

Perhaps this will be enough to lure the wary business user into the world of consumer smartphones.

I hope some of the Blackberry users can make the jump to Android. It is a great phone no doubt but I have been through a lot of forums and just can not seem to find much interest on this phone. It is a top, high end device but because of it's specific market, I'm wondering how much users will be interested.

If you long-press in text, you get a great little popup window that allows you to put the cursor wherever you want, nice and easy.

Yeah, thanks. I find it to be a bit cumbersome, unfortunately. It's tough to be very precise because even though it's magnified, you're still trying to move to a very specific tiny spot on the screen.

At best buy the droid pro just started picking up since the price drop... but then today urgent notice came thru to stop selling all droid pros and droid 2 global until further notice so who knows whats gonna happen

I just seen this on phonedog and called BestBuyto confirm. I am taking mine back. I have been through 3 in 5 days. I am sure it is a great phone. It has been my favorite android phone. I just have not had much luck with them. I loved this phone when I got it but it has been constant problems. I do not want to buy a phone that they have to halt sales of. Again, it's a great phone. I am just too weary of trying a 4th.

They are halting sales because Best Buy priced them cheaper than they were supposed to. Verizon was selling them at $179 and BB selling them at $50. Huge difference and from what I've read they violated some kind of contract on the DPro and D2.
I could be wrong, but early reports are pointing to price not problems causing the sales halt.
Sent from my DROID PRO using Tapatalk

That makes sense. But Best Buy, Amazon, Targets online mobile store, and Wirefly were all selling it for 50 dollars so I don't know why Best Buy would be the only retailer that had to stop. Those stores always sell phones cheaper than the corporate stores. I have not seen anything official on why they stopped but if it was price, wouldn't they have to do that for all of the phones?

Just seen this. Saying that it wasn't a defect but price of the two phones. Droid Pro and Droid 2 Global.

Nexus Two *Isn't* Dead

PC Magazine: Back in January, I had this really interesting talk with Erick Tseng about the Nexus One, which was supposed to offer an alternative retail model by which Americans could pick their phone and technology and carrier independently. But that doesn't seem to have panned out.
Andy Rubin: Making unlocked phones available in the U.S. is still a possibility. Whether that's simply acquired only online or through traditional retail channels - that's what got canceled. So we have to decide how to make unlocked phones available in the U.S.

Interesting... Looks like the Nexus line of unlocked phones still has quite a bit more life to it yet. Just the online store that's dead. Google's still thinking up a storm on this one. Hmmmm
Good news that, would certainly prefer another dev phone when the N1 has reach the end of it's useful life for me (not that I am expecting that to be anytime soon).
Oh yes, the best Rubi could do, a Nex2.
I'd just be happy if they continued to offer developer phones in the same way they're currently offering the N1.
I don't see how any of this implies there will be a nexus two. We have clearly been told there will be no nexus two. There was a lot more to the nexus one than being available unlocked.

Yes, there probably won't be a "Nexus Two" literally speaking. But the spirit of the Nexus One phone, meaning a 100% unlocked, carrier-untouched phone, is definitely not dead, as implied by Andy Rubin's statements.
In other words, a phone that everyone reading this forum would be interested in for the same reason they bought a Nexus One.
Nah, I been saying it all along. Google loses a lot of money when carriers do things like install bing. Its always been about pushing ads and thats not going to change in a world where people increasingly dont turn on a computer but rather use their smartphone for things like email and other traditional pc activites. I'm sure most of you have read Erics comments on the money at stake if each android phone only generates 10 dollars in ad revenues. For those that didnt the word billions is the one you need to use to describe it. Google has a very serious and compelling interest in breaking the carrier based subbed phone business model and the N1 was only a test run. Why not shoot for the moon and hopefully have a very profitable hardware business along with your core business? My expectation is that for the next go around there will be deals with best buy, radio shack and other large brick and morters to carry the N2 by any other name in stock. According to google the single largest reason people choose not to buy an N1 was not price but rather the combination of the price without the opportunity to fondle the device before plunking down their hard earned ching. Getting them in every best buy gaurantees that fondling can be had by those who seek it. This time expect an ad campaign of droid proportions.
No I dont have an uncle high in Google corporate this is my reading of the tea leaves, fearless prediction if you will.
You're overlooking the most secret and well-kept secret of the Nexus One.
Google installed worker elves inside of it. When they're ready to push out the Nexus Two, the worker elves will get instructions OTA on how to upgrade the hardware.
Those running custom ROMs will have to flash manually.
Great find there Paul
I read the interview before and was pissed that Andy said there would be no Gizmo integration into Google Voice but you obviously looked at the positive instead
Long live the spirit of the N1!
Hope Google turns the greedy bastards of the cell phone industry on their head eventually.
Please please please bring in plain unlocked Android phone with AWS support. Look at G2 and you'll understand why.
I don't know about a Nexus Two, but I never assumed that there would never be another Dev phone, there will always be a dev phone, whether it continues the Nexus line of awesomeness is another question.
I'll take one !
Bring it !
Nexus One sized (no 4.3" tablet)
Nexus One stylish
Super LCD or Super AMOLED WITHOUT Pentile
Vertical slider keyboard
Louder rear speaker
Latest mobile phone CPU and GPU
That's my list of what an N2 should be, anyway Vertical slider is personally my favorite type of keyboard, as you can use it one-handed easily.. I actually rarely used my HW keyboards on my two previous phones besides they were side-sliders and often I'm on the move.
Off topic, but I'm more eager to see an 'unlocked' google tv, or atleast a version for a DIY HTPC.
Also is Chrome OS dead? There can only be one!!

HW keyboards are completely useless to me now as I can input text much faster with Swype. When factoring in the added bulk a keyboard adds, I'm hoping the next gen Nexus DOESN'T have one.

+1... hate added bulk of a hardware keyboard. I like my phone to be able to fit in my front pocket without people thinking I am getting an erection you know?
What makes you think anyone is looking? lol More on topic I used to love the full keyboard but frankly I do pretty well with swype and the tradeoff on bulk doesnt pencil out for me anymore. No reason they couldnt have two versions though.....
another vote for NO hardware keyboard....what a bad idea...ruins the form factor and it's not needed
I thought he meant, there will be other unlocked phones .... not necessarily from google or in the spirit of the nexus one.

Should I return my Fascinate?

I'm thinking about returning my Fascinate in light of the Verizon iPhone. Would it be worth it? Being stuck on 2.1 waiting till 2013 for Gingerbread forever sucks!

I wouldn't get this iteration of the iPhone. You'll be stuck on it for the next two years, missing out completely on the next gen device that will come out in the summer.
there isn't a phone that you can walk into the VZW store and buy right now that is better than the Fascinate. You can argue that the Droid inc, Droid X and droid 2 are all superior in some way, but in terms of hardware, speed, and form-factor there isn't a better all around device today. In a month or two, that could very well change, but if you take it back today, what are you going to get?

Yeah, I owned the Droid inc and returned it for the Fascinate, that was a good decision I think. The X is too big and has a tumor, and the Droid 2 is just a faster version of the OG Droid.
Very Good points. Thanks.

I kind of agree with you on the VZW part. The Fascinate IMO is the best Android handset on Verizon, for the the reasons that you also listed above. However, having been using an iPhone 3GS until recently, there are also some benefits to switching over to iOS. Personally, I find a lot more that I like about the Android platform compared to iOS. I also have a problem with having to use a device where a CEO is determining what I want from a phone, but it does have its upsides.
However as a Fascinate owner, there seems to be this feeling of being left behind and inadequate. Samsung is more focused on releasing new devices with Froyo already installed, than actually releasing the damn update on our current phones. What's the point in buying the Fascinate today if in not even half of a year there will be a better version of it running wild? At least with the iPhone you know that you will get timely updates and a new version won't hit stores until at least a year later.
Now, one could argue that rooting your SCH-I500 and flashing a custom ROM can make you feel less concerned with having to have the 2.2 update on the phone, but even the mod development on this phone feels somewhat weak (No offense to the Fascinate devs, I know you guys are awesome and doing all you can to save this phone). I'm just calling it how I see it. I've used, rooted, and modded an Epic 4G and that device has a way more active community with more variety in mod selections.
Personally, if I was told that I could exchange my Fascinate for the iPhone 4 when it releases I would jump on that. However, If I was told that I could exchange my Fascinate for the Droid Bionic when that launches, I would be much more excited.
As noted, the Fascinate even with 2.1 is still a fantastic phone. If you are smart, you'll keep what you have (or trade/ebay) to keep your upgrade for later this year when all the LTE dual core Androids come out that will blow away anything out currently and even the next iPhone coming in June/July (as it won't have LTE).
I would return it and just get a cheap feature phone off craig's list and use that sans contract until the Motorola Bionic comes out, and then sign your contract with the phone discount. Wish I still had this option. May try to sell my Fascinate on craig's list and see if I can get 50% of the cost of a Bionic to just buy it out right. Im tired of Samsung and their bull ****. I can deal with updates no coming out. But when you code your phone so poorly that even the dev community can't work with it to fix your laziness and inability to release updates, well that is just too much for me.
Yes, most definitely. Return it, and get a Razr.

Considering all the current smart phones have about 1500mah batteries and the specs released for the upcoming dual core have 2000mah batteries along with better/more efficient OSs etc, I'm thinking the battery life will be about the same.
Battery life may even be better on the targa2 based phones as they probably will have a lot more time "at rest" since they are capable of doing a lot more work per clock cycle.
Personally i am holding out till a dual core, lte phone comes along in the form factor i want.
Wait for dual core. Iphone 4 is outdated by the time March hits.

Yeah, being on the latest version of android would be nice. But, honestly, I don't know that having a newer version of android would impact how I use my phone. Flash support will be nice but I rarely find my self on websites that require flash while browsing on my phone. certain apps require 2.2, but I don't use those. The speed bump might be the biggest difference (for me, at least).
I'm sure we'll get updates either from the devs or from samsung that will bring us to the newer versions of android. But, Before you got making a drastic change in phone hardware just ask yourself if that is really going to change your phone activities or how you use it. For me, it really won't.
my 2 cents.
I'm in the same boat. I just got my Fascinate 3 weeks ago (leaving a little over 1 more week to return it under the 30 day guarantee), and I love it; it's the first smart phone I've owned. However, I can't help but feel the iPhone might be a better choice.
For me, the selling points for Android were Google Voice integration and free wifi hotspot capability. After researching these, I believe they are both now possible on the iPhone. I didn't even consider an iPhone before because I didn't want to deal with AT&T's network, but on Verizon, it is pretty tempting.
I also hate Steve Jobs and the general iPhone mindset--that everything is perfect as-is without allowing for any changes. With jailbreaking, however, I feel like most things on the Android become possible. I'm under the impression that the iPhone can do essentially everything that Android can, with a better/larger selection of apps and games. Maybe I'm wrong...it'd be great if someone who has previously owned an iPhone could point out its flaws to change my mind.
In the end, I'm sure I'd be happy with either device, regardless of my decision. But with 2 years to go, I want the best experience possible. The Fascinate has been great, but Samsung's apathy toward updates is a big turn-off. If it weren't for jt/birdman/etc. and their work on Gingerbread, I might have switched already.

Personally, I'd stick with what you got so you don't get trapped into iOS apps and iTunes (which I loathe). GB will be out soonish from this community and Samsung will eventually get 2.2 out if you want to stay unrooted.
The phone is a great phone and the only feature you'll really be lacking is the front camera/video calls. If that is really important to you, then maybe get the HTC Thunderbolt as it comes out soon.
Also, don't worry about your return period as you can easily sell the phone for upwards of $400 on Ebay/Craigslist and simply buy someones phone you want out right down the road when they launch. Such as in 6mos or so when all the far better dual core LTE devices launch.

I don't care at all about a front camera; until it is much more common and the people that I talk to have one, it is on the bottom of my priority list. What do you hate about iOS apps? I have an iPod, and I personally think iTunes is a decent interface for music syncs. It certainly beats what I use to transfer media to my Fascinate right now, which is manual file copying. Maybe I'll give MediaMonkey a try soon.

iOS apps are fine, except I do believe there are far more free versions on the Android market.
I loathe iTunes as its a resource hog. I refuse to allow it on my machines.
Android allows you to use whatever software you want and you simply copy paste the media over to your phone. May not be automatic (yet I'm sure Google is working on this) but, that is not a concern to me and I am good with copy/paste.

I hate itunes and it's probably the #1 reason that I don't use an iphone. There is nothing specifically wrong with the iphone 4, but honestly who wants to sign a 2 year contract on something that is already about a year old when a new version will be out soon?
I bought my Droid inc back in April when it launched. VZW was kind enough to replace it with a SF after I had some issues with my 3rd DINC. I've got an upgrade i'm saving for when something really compelling comes out and i can tell you, the iphone 4 isn't compelling.
I have 2 different people I know that own iPhone 4s and I have had to use them at one point or another (to look something up and my phone was at my desk). I can say that I will definitely NEVER EVER go back to a 3.5 inch screen. They seem soooo small now. I don't think I would even consider a 3.7 inch screen at this point. I think 4 inches is the smallest I will ever go, and the 4.3 on the Droid X and Evo are probably pushing the upper region.

Thinking about trading in my smartphone for a tablet...

Hey guys,
Ive thought about this for a while and I think I am ready to act but I want to hear some opinions from my fellow Xoom owners.
First off, I've always been an Android supporter, iOS is not an option for me.
I have an Atrix right now, and while I love it, I have always loved the idea of tablets more. I was thinking about selling my Atrix and using the money to buy a Xoom and use that as my main "Data" device. As for a phone, I'm thinking maybe blackberry or a nice text messaging phone will work fine. I'm not the kind of person who needs to be walking and looking at emails at the same time so the portability issue doesnt really bother me.
but go ahead....give me your opinions!

Uhm...well, personally I wouldn't go for it. Only because the Android Phones right now are totally different than the Android on the tablets. The Xoom is very new and has lots of problems, but that is expected.
If you were going to do that, I would wait a bit more until it is a bit more polished. In my opinion, trading in your phone which you love and runs smoothly for a tablet that isnt showing its full color, YET! (which dont get me wrong I LOVE the tablet)
I mean, if you just CANT RESIST, then I would say go for it and get a nice phone that you can text and email and whatever else...which blackberrys are pretty good at, actually the only thing they are good at.
The choice is up to you, and I am gonna say that it is a very hard choice!
Good luck haha

the screen is one of the best thing i love about this device. when you compare it to the ipad2 specs, you can see that motorola went all out on this device.
You gotta have both phone and xoom but only have data on one device and tether. But if I were to only have one I'd stick with the phone and wait it out, the market will flood and prices will drop. The phone is just more versatile and operational for the time being. Even though I love my xoom the only thing that makes it worth 8 bills is that not everyone has it.

For me it's not a yes-no answer. I'll still have a smartphone, but it doesn't have to be a high-end model, since the heavy-lifting data use will be offloaded to a tab. I'm going to have the phone around more often than a tab, so the phone still needs some data capability.
Put another way, the phone can go on a 2-year cycle (no ETF), and the tab can be upgraded whenever, since it won't be tied to a carrier plan.
I've already made this leap. Got a Droid X at the beginning of the year but returned it at the first inkling of Tegra 2 produce, went back to my Droid. When the Xoom launched, I deactivated my Droid and got a dumbphone to go with my shiny new Xoom 3g. I'm on the 3gb plan for now but it looks like I'll be keeping it under 1gb so I'll bump down to 1gb. I bring my Xoom everywhere with me, even have an US Army map bag on the way for carrying it. Its actually become a conversation piece because everyone wants to know what this non-iPad is and what its like and such. Really glad I made the switch. I keep my Droid around as a PMP for the gym and other things but otherwise its all Xoom for me.

My First Smart Phone

I own a Tablet, Netbook, Windows & Ubuntu Laptops, and Servers; but I've never owned a SmartPhone. Now that I may finally be upgrading my Verizon Plan, I need guidance.
Asking which is the best SmartPhone out there is very a very subjective and possibly contentious discussion, and if you have a hands-down favorite I want to hear about it, but more importantly I want to know which of the current VZW offerings to avoid. I figure that will be a better way to narrow the field and make my choice.
Thanks in advance,
ALF
hey. Not sure.

First off it depends on what you want to do with the phone. there is never one clear cut winner. if you are looking to root, mod, flash and such. you may be interested in a completely different phone then someone looking to maximize random features and such.
my vote. you can never go wrong with a nexus. easy to unlock. root. flash. have long-term support. always a great choice. i have one. love it.
Verizon carries a lot of motorola phones. they tend to have good build quality, and lots of factory features. but be warned some are a headache to work with, and moto can be a real pain about unlocking bootloaders and such. im not down-talking moto in anyway, i have an atrix too and love it. just letting you know.
again there is not "best phone" there is a new great phone out every day. look around. read some reviews. and remember if you really cant decide. nexus is the best of ALL worlds. just remember to do some reading up on what the limitations are before you buy.
hope this can help a little.

That's a tough one because, as you mentioned, it's a very subjective issue with most people. You have a diverse set of other devices so my first question would have to deal with how badly do you need your smartphone to interact with them. What OS is on your tablet and netbook. If they're both Android I would recommend you stay with Verizon's Droid line. If they're Windows I would heavily recommend that you look at Windows Phone, namely the Trophy on Verizon. Don't get caught up in the whole "specs" conversation, go to a Verizon store and actually work the phone. Is it intuitive? Does it lag more than you would care for? How are the buttons, keyboards, etc. If this is your first smartphone I would definitely suggest you consider the "feel" of the phone and the menus, layout & screen. On another note, if you don't feel comfortable with any of their offerings, buy a good used one on ebay or Craigslist and put it on your contract. It'll be much less sour than to have to spend the next two years with a phone you hate to even look at. Hope this helps.
Once you have used the HTC EVO 3D camera you will never look at another phone again! when i take photos of my family and kids in 3d the photos just amaze me every time. when i switch to 2d and take photos the pictures are still very clear but just boring. i actually only take 3d photos now as you can edit the photo later and create a 2d copy from it. it also scored an impressive 2800 points in quadrant on a ics leak stock kernel!! im running myn without sense and it starts up only using 300mb of ram. there's 1gb ram!!!!
Well, these days I'd say the One X or Sammy Galaxy the 3rd ;o)
But the iPhone is not a dumbphone either, no? (I feel I'll get hell for this...)
I totally agree it's a complex question.
As mentioned before.try to summarize what you're going to do with it and which functions and feature are a must for you.
Keep us up on what you got in the end.
Cheers and good hunting
Thanks for all the input so far. To answer some of the questions:
I don't think I need the phone to interact with my tablet or netbook.
My tablet is a rooted ViewSonic G-Tablet with Flashback ROM
My netbook is WinXP with Ubuntu bootable from usb-stick.
If you could please wait until the end of this summer. There are a lot of great devices that are going to be released.

This. There are great offerings coming from Sony, LG, and others before the end of the summer. You're definitely best off waiting to see what comes, and if nothing new catches your eye you'll still get an even better price on older devices once the new crop hits.
There are many good smartphones,
many others will suggest iphone 4s or 5, or SIII, but a good model in stores now is Sony Xperia S.
Oh hell yes, the Xperia S is pretty good.

Well it looks like I'll be putting off my quest for the perfect phone for another time.
When I said I've never had a SmartPhone, that wasn't exactly true. Collecting dust in my draw for years, I've had a Mogul PPC-6800. Problem was I could never get Verizon to connect it without a data plan. They just relented and I now have it activated (with no data). Of course now that I'm using it, I'm too blind to read the damn screen.
back when I first got the Mogul, however many years ago that was, all I wanted was a PIM to replace my Palm Pilot and to be able to make Skype calls from wifi hot-spots.
Just wait for the galaxy g3 or just buy the galaxy nexus. My friend who never had a smartphone but he picked it up (gnexus) easy and now he using use all the features. If ur really really dumb, there is the iphone

I would appreciate it if you didn't copy & paste my posts and try to pass it off as "my idea". Not cool.
a google phone like the galaxy nexus will give you the best android experience since it gets its updates directly from the carriers.
unfortunately verizon hasnt updated their cdma version of the galaxy nexus since it was launched in 2011.
i like iphone 4s - 5 very like it ...

they are still of bunch of ignorants in my opinion
We’ve seen it in laptops, as companies like Toshiba finally turn away from racing to the pricing bottom and begin to build truly excellent ultrabooks; we're also seeing it in cellphones, from the HTC One and a small selection of other devices.
I don't need more cores, more gigahertz, or more software features that ostensibly help me use my phone more easily. I need a phone that feels good in my hand, looks good on my desk, does everything I expect it to, and gives me no reason to think it won't last the life of my two-year contract. I bought an iPhone 5 because last fall it was the only phone that fit that bill — now there are several Android options as well, and they’re good enough to make me want to switch back to Google’s OS.
For now, it's a choice every buyer will have to make. You can have the far better-looking phone or you can have the slightly better-performing phone — and you really can't choose wrong. If the GS III is any indication, millions upon millions will choose the GS4. Me? I think design matters. Polish matters. The Galaxy S4 is fast and impressive, but it's also noisy and complex. The One is refined, quiet, comfortable, beautiful, and above all simply pleasant. I love using that phone, in a way I haven't experienced with anything since the iPhone 5. That's why, when my contract is up in June, I'll probably be casting my lot with HTC instead of Samsung.

he should update his HTC One review if he loves it this much, his review certainly doesnt reflect that!
I think it does. And I could not agree more. David Pierce on mobile devices is 100% reliable.

So did Gizmodo UK though that's not saying much
Pretty much everyone who's reviewed both phones side by side has opted for the One
Bound to be differences in opinion - I can totally see why some would prefer the S4. But for me, HTC One all the way. That is if my order ever turns up! Grr.
Even if the One sucked it would have beat the S4 on the Verge. The S4 has a chance to beat the iphone in sales this year, the Verge, as iPhone fanbois, dont want that to happen. Of course, im not saying the conclusion is wrong, i do have an HTC One after all, but the point stands.
