There have been several people that have been looking for a Mac solution to flashing their Epic back to stock. I've not personally tried using this software, but I think it's worth a shot for you Mac users. It's called Heimdall and can be found here:
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
Apparently it will work on any Galaxy S phone. It also may be worth trying for those of you that can't get Odin to work for you on your PC.
Thanks to drakkahn and n0esc for finding this.
i am very interested in knowing whether or not this will work, as odin is a *****

This works fine. There's, like, three posts here in this section alone on the program. I use it, on Linux, and it works great. It's more reliable and quicker than Odin, too.
It's not for the feint of heart, though. It's a command-line based.
EDIT: Oh, look, the thread started by the dev who works on it... >.>

After seeing JI5 and JI6 come out today, and hearing that the new updates fixed the GPS issue, I decided that I wanted to update.
But, I have a Mac.
Is there anyway to get this to work with a Mac or at least on Parallels? I am not going to go to all the trouble to get boot camp just for this purpose.
It worries me that when the full froyo comes out that I won't be able to upgrade to that either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The thing to keep in mind is that Samsung Kies is *NOT* a supported update method for any of the U.S. market Galaxy S phones. The only method officially supported by the 4 U.S. carriers is OTA updates.
In other words, anything crazy people like me (and a few others obviously LOL) find via Kies, or Samfirmwares.com, or modaco, or wherever...are likely to be leaked builds (not final builds) and builds that are not involved with official OTA updates.
Though we may eventually luck up on getting what ends up being OTA updates to 2.1 and 2.2 between now and whenever by doing these things, there are no guarantees.
Now, having said that, you are most likely to receive what ends up being an OTA update from HERE, due to the way OTA updates are staged out in batches. Just because an OTA update goes live on a given date does not mean that every single solitary phone will receive the update that day. It could take days or weeks for your phone to fall into a push batch for an OTA.
So, it depends on what you want to do. If you want to tweak, tinker, and experiment, you're going to have to have a Windows environment at this stage of things.
If you want to just enjoy your phone and be able to get an OTA when one drops...Just wait until it drops and with a dose of patience you'll be fine.
I dohave mac.. but that doesn't stop me from loading os.. I know for sure that someone on the development section will make a flashable version of it in which you use via rom manager or clockworkmod..

Rom Manager/Clockwork installable zips are made for EASE, not rock-solid-guaranteed-to-have-an-exit-strategy-reliability. Not that clockwork recovery is unreliable, but if you think that clockwork recovery is enough and will always save your bacon, your mistaken.
Even this can have its problems, especially if you encounter problems with a newer build and decide to (mistakenly) nandroid back to a JFD based build.
All of these newer builds are using a newer kernel, and nandroid will not restore a kernel. This is the reason WHY so many people had problems with JI5 dropping today because they didn't do their homework.
They see people like me, and others of course, who jump in and are successful with it. But I and a lot of people leave "understood" and obvious (to us) things unsaid because we at least vaguely think we know what we're doing LOL. And we are fully aware of the need for a reliable Odin setup as a necessary strategy to be this carefree with firmware testing.
At the end of the day, assuming you had a hardware button working Vibrant, the only way out of a bad scenario is Odin3. And that requires a Windows environment.
If you're going to hack android devices, rather than simply use them and rely on your provider for OTA's....you need a windows environment....or you had best really be on top of what your doing and be very careful. The need to have Odin available as a backup strategy when things go wrong really isn't optional.
Although I haven't tried it, I'm not completely sure that Odin won't work in a WINE bottle.
I'll give it a shot when I go home tonight and post a tutorial tomorrow if in does in fact work. I've read where it didn't recognize the Behold II's download mode under linux, but I'm giving it a shot either way.
i have an imac, had it for almost a year now. wouldnt trade it for a thing, but as a mac users; we need to realize, we can never ever ever push windows out of our life... ever. kinda defeats the purpose of buying and owning a mac, i know...
but still, i used odin on my sons laptop so i can get ji5.
I haven't had time to try it on my Mac, but on Linux you can use Virtualbox (free download from Sun/Oracle) to create a Windows XP VM to flash with Odin. It's pretty easy. I think Odin needs the Samsung drivers, so you might not be able to use Wine.
US updates are OTA--as said above. No need to use the computer.
Having said that, I run OS X 10.4 and I know I cannot really do anything with it. I wait for solid builds to come out/keep it simple/research any time I want to mess around inside the code. I bricked a phone and had to use a friend's computer to try and get ODIN to restore.
Bottom-line: If you are OS X dependent, USE CAUTION!!!

10.4?!! You're running a PPC mac and yes, there's nothing that YOU can do with it. That said, don't give you false advice to others.

First, any official update will be an OTA and therefore will not need a computer. So the fact you're on a Mac won't be an issue at all.
Second, just do BootCamp. It's not really much of a hassle at all, and it's the best experience you can have running Windows on a Mac. I used to run into a lot of driver issues running Windows XP / Vista / 7 through Parallels and VMWare. Plus with how slow it ran and the amount of resources it ate up, I decided to go BootCamp and never looked back. Trust me, it's worth it.

Right..false advice. Good luck with that. This isn't my first rodeo...i love my 10.4 but it is pretty useless as per odin. You need a good platform if anything goes wrong.

Odin does not recognize our phones in VMware or Parallels. Your only solution is boot camp. I don't now why you're moaning that it's so hard to install. It's literally 3 clicks, then you insert your Windows disk and reboot. If you want to play with leaked firmware, you're going to have to get over yourself.
After installing CWM recovery, kernel, root, and CM7 on a Vzw Tab, is it possible to fully restore it back to stock so that Samsung will honor the warranty?
Friend of mine's Tab is having some screen issues and the warranty expires in about two weeks.
Is it possible or is he SOL?
Thanks

Yes he can. There is a stock ROM EC02 that is flashable using a program called Heimdall. It takes you back so Verizon would never know.

I saw some posts about stock ROMs floating around, but wasn't sure that the kernel, recovery, and EXT4 could all be restored back to stock.

I have an AT&T Galaxy Tab and that link doesn't work for me. I've tried everything I possibly could to try to get this thing back to something I can use that doesn't reboot when I try to use the keyboard. I've done search after search and it never provides me with any information that's helpful to getting it back to a workable condition. I've come across the link above numerous times and I've tried to use those instructions over and over with no success.
I really think it's worth pointing out that constantly pointing people to these directions isn't helpful to those trying to restore a non-Verizon Tab. It's done zero good to me with my AT&T Tab.

But I clearly asked about a Verizon Tab and he replied with Verizon Tab-related info. That's a helpful thing.
On the other issue, the last thing you want to do with an AT&T Tab is try and use CDMA (Verizon/Sprint) ROMs. This is probably why your Tab is screwed.
Stick to GSM/ATT ROMs and you'll probably have better luck.
I've tried to find AT&T ROMs and none have worked so far.
Every time I search on this subject here I get sent to the Verizon fix.
I had the same problem, for some reason the older versions of Android that was posted on here haven't worked for me. Pretty much all the links provided in the instruction posts on turning the tab into a phone had Froyo 2.2 links. However I downloaded the Gingerbread rom 2.3.3 and flashed it and it works now:

Don't forget to reflash the radio you want.

hi there,
as my first android-experiences were made with the SE Xperia X10, i played a lot in the respecitve xda-section before i came to my beloved NS.
what the X10-community developed is the flashtool, which is an application, that gives you the possibility to simply do flashes, root, install recovery and many more things via your PC with one single software.
here the current link: http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/
maybe this could also be established for our NS? it would give the possibility to easily try roms, themes or kernels without having the need of adb & co...(damned, i am grown up and don't have the time any more to play the whole evening with my phone...unfortunately...)
for example i would love the following functions (and have no idea, if any of it is possible! ):
- root
- install custom recovery
- unlock/lock bootloader
- flash rom/kernel/theme
- backup/restore system
- backup/restore efs
- ...?
is that anyhow realizable for NS?
of course flashing and backing up can be done easily via cwm-recovery...but imagine you totally messed up your device. you just flash complete stock rom, root it and install cwm-recovery in minutes, with just some clicks...wouldn't that be awesome?
i also want to state, that i totally appreciate the work of the devs in the NS-section! it is great and we have a lot of stuff to choose and try! also there are a lot of very helpful guides and hints in this forum! this shall just be an idea, maybe some others might like it as well...?
and yes, this is for the lazy ones also, without doubt. but cmon, mates, imagine the possibilities for softbricked devices...you just need a stock rom image and have your NS connected to your PC...only some clicks away from "puh, back on track"
greez
p.
you can do most of the things with Rom Manager by kosuh. It's on the market.
You can't do what the OP is suggesting with rom manager.
Flashtool is sorta like Odin for Samsung phones and rsa lite for Motorola phones. It gives you the ability flash packages straight from windows.
Being an ex x10 guy myself, it was an awesome tool to do almost anything with the phone including rooting, installing recovery, reverting to stock, flashing updates, installing jit etc.
Yes some of these functions are possible in rm but its not the same and I'd love to see it developed for ns.
Saying that, doesn't Odin work on our nexus?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
so, here reunites the former X10-elite!
Odin does actually work on the NS, I already used it once to return to stock. but, as with the ROM Manager, you can "only" flash roms with it, but you can't root or push anything for example...
I was working on an app for mac that did adb functions and fastboot without actually using the terminal, but i haven't had time to work on it.
There its an app like this on the Desire section maybe it will work for the NS as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=823315

thanks for that, mate! at least it brings out a GUI for some fastboot commands and mumilover says it's good for all devices! i will definitely give it a try, because it's so far the best there is to find. though, it's limited to flash-action again...ok, i will stop *****ing now, it's really great and i think i have made my point clear.
cheers

I did my first rooting blah, blah, blah and it was a success on the exception I have no sound now. everything works fine except I can't call anyone and or listen to music. I did tons of research on this before posting this, but I still didn't get my problem resolved which in turn forced me to pester ya'll. I found a thread of others having this problem and tried a fix about trying to install a different modem with odin and it keeps failing.
I installed the MJA upgrade (how to root sph-l720) I saw on youtube. after the rooting etc.. is when I lost sound. everything else worked (data) (wifi) (texting) (googleplay) etc......
I could only find one other modem to try, but like I said it failed to install.
after 3 days of browsing and getting things done by myself, I'm burned out and could really use help on this. I'm very new to this phone thing so please, if there is a way to fix this, be as detailed as possible.
I didn't have time to read forum rules so I didn't post any links cause I was not sure if I was allowed to. If I am and ya'll would like me to post where I learned the rooting and a so called fix to my problem. I can do that. just let me know.
Thanks!
Well this section is for not for your version of the S4. So you would probably have more luck in this section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-sprint
You give way to few details to help you.
- What rooting method did you use?
- What is the excact file that you used for rooting (filename is good enough).
- What is the excact firmware that you are using?
My guess would be that you flashed the wrong file for rooting (if you used cf-root). Just try to reflash the firmware you are on with Odin. That should probably fix it.
You don't need to flash a different modem. I don't think that thats the problem.
Give us more then a name to a youtube video (I can't even find it). Be specific. The more details the better.

Hi Lenny,
thanks for responding
I reposted this in your link, but heres the answer to your question anyways. the exact name of the youtube video is,
(How to Install Android 4.3 Custom ROM on Sprint Galaxy S4!) this video has all the exact files i used on my rooting. I did however use a more updated philz touch recovery. 6.15. something. not sure if that matters or not.
Thanks in advance.
I am using a Mac, and I have always used heimdall with no issues on my S4.
I am running into a lot of issues with my S5.
What is the best solution for Mac users to flash recoveries.to their device these days?
Also what is best recovery for S5 currently. It seems latest TWRP is very buggy.
I also found Heimdall to be a major pain in the backside on the S5.
I ended up using Odin and PhilZ CWM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706253)
Check the github, theres a few forks that people have said make it work on the s5, havent personally been able to try them since i havent had to reflash, but if you get it working let us know.

Yep, sadly heimdall is not 'officially' supported for S5> which does my head in. I mean, surely a Linux based OS should be better than windows for working with android?! But, no, that isn't the case at all...
So how are guys on Macs doing it? Odin is just for PC...
Ive seen a lot of people on macs do it in a VM, its finnicky at best though and i dont think it even works on linux, didnt for me at least. Like i said, check the github for heimdall, theres some issues that refrence some pull requests you can try.
