I am using a Mac, and I have always used heimdall with no issues on my S4.
I am running into a lot of issues with my S5.
What is the best solution for Mac users to flash recoveries.to their device these days?
Also what is best recovery for S5 currently. It seems latest TWRP is very buggy.
I also found Heimdall to be a major pain in the backside on the S5.
I ended up using Odin and PhilZ CWM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706253)
Check the github, theres a few forks that people have said make it work on the s5, havent personally been able to try them since i havent had to reflash, but if you get it working let us know.

Yep, sadly heimdall is not 'officially' supported for S5> which does my head in. I mean, surely a Linux based OS should be better than windows for working with android?! But, no, that isn't the case at all...
So how are guys on Macs doing it? Odin is just for PC...
Ive seen a lot of people on macs do it in a VM, its finnicky at best though and i dont think it even works on linux, didnt for me at least. Like i said, check the github for heimdall, theres some issues that refrence some pull requests you can try.

After seeing JI5 and JI6 come out today, and hearing that the new updates fixed the GPS issue, I decided that I wanted to update.
But, I have a Mac.
Is there anyway to get this to work with a Mac or at least on Parallels? I am not going to go to all the trouble to get boot camp just for this purpose.
It worries me that when the full froyo comes out that I won't be able to upgrade to that either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The thing to keep in mind is that Samsung Kies is *NOT* a supported update method for any of the U.S. market Galaxy S phones. The only method officially supported by the 4 U.S. carriers is OTA updates.
In other words, anything crazy people like me (and a few others obviously LOL) find via Kies, or Samfirmwares.com, or modaco, or wherever...are likely to be leaked builds (not final builds) and builds that are not involved with official OTA updates.
Though we may eventually luck up on getting what ends up being OTA updates to 2.1 and 2.2 between now and whenever by doing these things, there are no guarantees.
Now, having said that, you are most likely to receive what ends up being an OTA update from HERE, due to the way OTA updates are staged out in batches. Just because an OTA update goes live on a given date does not mean that every single solitary phone will receive the update that day. It could take days or weeks for your phone to fall into a push batch for an OTA.
So, it depends on what you want to do. If you want to tweak, tinker, and experiment, you're going to have to have a Windows environment at this stage of things.
If you want to just enjoy your phone and be able to get an OTA when one drops...Just wait until it drops and with a dose of patience you'll be fine.
I dohave mac.. but that doesn't stop me from loading os.. I know for sure that someone on the development section will make a flashable version of it in which you use via rom manager or clockworkmod..

Rom Manager/Clockwork installable zips are made for EASE, not rock-solid-guaranteed-to-have-an-exit-strategy-reliability. Not that clockwork recovery is unreliable, but if you think that clockwork recovery is enough and will always save your bacon, your mistaken.
Even this can have its problems, especially if you encounter problems with a newer build and decide to (mistakenly) nandroid back to a JFD based build.
All of these newer builds are using a newer kernel, and nandroid will not restore a kernel. This is the reason WHY so many people had problems with JI5 dropping today because they didn't do their homework.
They see people like me, and others of course, who jump in and are successful with it. But I and a lot of people leave "understood" and obvious (to us) things unsaid because we at least vaguely think we know what we're doing LOL. And we are fully aware of the need for a reliable Odin setup as a necessary strategy to be this carefree with firmware testing.
At the end of the day, assuming you had a hardware button working Vibrant, the only way out of a bad scenario is Odin3. And that requires a Windows environment.
If you're going to hack android devices, rather than simply use them and rely on your provider for OTA's....you need a windows environment....or you had best really be on top of what your doing and be very careful. The need to have Odin available as a backup strategy when things go wrong really isn't optional.
Although I haven't tried it, I'm not completely sure that Odin won't work in a WINE bottle.
I'll give it a shot when I go home tonight and post a tutorial tomorrow if in does in fact work. I've read where it didn't recognize the Behold II's download mode under linux, but I'm giving it a shot either way.
i have an imac, had it for almost a year now. wouldnt trade it for a thing, but as a mac users; we need to realize, we can never ever ever push windows out of our life... ever. kinda defeats the purpose of buying and owning a mac, i know...
but still, i used odin on my sons laptop so i can get ji5.
I haven't had time to try it on my Mac, but on Linux you can use Virtualbox (free download from Sun/Oracle) to create a Windows XP VM to flash with Odin. It's pretty easy. I think Odin needs the Samsung drivers, so you might not be able to use Wine.
US updates are OTA--as said above. No need to use the computer.
Having said that, I run OS X 10.4 and I know I cannot really do anything with it. I wait for solid builds to come out/keep it simple/research any time I want to mess around inside the code. I bricked a phone and had to use a friend's computer to try and get ODIN to restore.
Bottom-line: If you are OS X dependent, USE CAUTION!!!

10.4?!! You're running a PPC mac and yes, there's nothing that YOU can do with it. That said, don't give you false advice to others.

First, any official update will be an OTA and therefore will not need a computer. So the fact you're on a Mac won't be an issue at all.
Second, just do BootCamp. It's not really much of a hassle at all, and it's the best experience you can have running Windows on a Mac. I used to run into a lot of driver issues running Windows XP / Vista / 7 through Parallels and VMWare. Plus with how slow it ran and the amount of resources it ate up, I decided to go BootCamp and never looked back. Trust me, it's worth it.

Right..false advice. Good luck with that. This isn't my first rodeo...i love my 10.4 but it is pretty useless as per odin. You need a good platform if anything goes wrong.

And yes, you will need to run parallels et al. Or rock a non osx device for an easier time.

Odin does not recognize our phones in VMware or Parallels. Your only solution is boot camp. I don't now why you're moaning that it's so hard to install. It's literally 3 clicks, then you insert your Windows disk and reboot. If you want to play with leaked firmware, you're going to have to get over yourself.
There have been several people that have been looking for a Mac solution to flashing their Epic back to stock. I've not personally tried using this software, but I think it's worth a shot for you Mac users. It's called Heimdall and can be found here:
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
Apparently it will work on any Galaxy S phone. It also may be worth trying for those of you that can't get Odin to work for you on your PC.
Thanks to drakkahn and n0esc for finding this.
i am very interested in knowing whether or not this will work, as odin is a *****

This works fine. There's, like, three posts here in this section alone on the program. I use it, on Linux, and it works great. It's more reliable and quicker than Odin, too.
It's not for the feint of heart, though. It's a command-line based.
EDIT: Oh, look, the thread started by the dev who works on it... >.>

HI guys, I'd like to post this here. Here is the latest Odin flash update I pulled from Kies and my device the other day. This is as new as it gets for Samsung Galaxy Camera. You will need Odin3 and the following files
PIT: http://d-h.st/3B3
CSC: http://d-h.st/AVe
MODEM: http://d-h.st/Nbl
PDA: http://d-h.st/U7K
Not much more to say, Hope this gets someone out of a sticky situation.
I wonder if they'll ever remember they made this device and give us another update, not necessarily a version upgrade, but give it some extra functions in the camera app.

Adam, many guys paid for the toolkit. We realize you're busy with many projects, but we have no one else to go to to get a sound recovery zip for our cameras. I'm just asking you in a professional manner for your assistance.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. What do you want? You want me to whip up a CASUAL recovery installer? Or what kind of recovery.zip are you looking for? Generally you install .zips from a recovery, I wouldn't be making a ROM for the camera, but I can help to make it easier to install ROMs.

This device has received the same support as the Galaxy Note 2. So, if you read about something for GNote2, you will likely see it on this device too.
Thanks for reply. No, I'm not interested in installing ROMs. Just a standard CWR that would allow me to install zipped scripts and stuff to tweak camera. I.E. crossbreeder, etc. I installed recovery on my note 8 and added some scripts to make it run smoother and conserve battery. I've seen some recoveries out there, but there are questionable, but you have established yourself as a serious developer. That's why I asked.

no. this is for GC100 only.
GC-120
Adam,
I have a GC120 that was rooted and working fine. However not realizing that the bootloader was still locked I flashed a custom rom with mobile odin and did not make a back up prior to doing that. Now it boots directly to Download mode and I can not get it to boot to recovery. I can not find the stock firmware anywhere to try to flash through odin. I was going to try the unbrickable mod but I dont know if I feel comfortable taking the thing apart. Ive tried flashing the OTA updates for the device and still nothing. Any suggestions on how I can get this to work again ?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
those files still available or no?
Adam... a year ago i downloaded your files and keep it in my harddrive, but last week when i want to use it again, the files corrupted... i can't understand why because i used the same files for 2 times before.
Last night i tried to download your files again... but keep on failing.. my connection really good because i can download 1080 (-+ 1gb) movie everytime. So your files still available to download no? So
Guys any help on flashing sgs5 on mac os?

Do you mean you want to download ROMs off XDA and move them from your Mac to your phone, then flash ROM? If you want to move files from Mac to phone use Airdroid on Wifi. No better choice.
Edit: sorry you want an Odin like tool, not sure about that sorry.

Unfortunately, the only other option is to try using a VM. I am in the same boat. You may want to comment on the issue I created on the Heimdall github https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/issues/203
The more information that can be gained the better.
Parallels are way better than vm i have tried vm many time.. on my note 3 i got error while flashing through odin..
then i install parallels and it really worked nice...
for transfer your data you can use android file transfer on mac.. jss google android file transfer...
Have an S5 with no screen. I know the phone works, had a friend lend me their screen so I could show someone else it worked to sell (which didnt happen cause its locked to ATT). I havent enabled USB Debugging on it nor rooted it, though i know my way around Odin and dont need a screen for all that.
ANYWAY...are there any kernels based on stock TW that have USB Debugging enabled by default? Phones pretty powerful enough to be able to sideload and run BBQ Screen and use the device with some minor latency but i dont mind. Just wanna use my $250 shelf ornament til i can afford/find a screen

so i found a way to enable usb debugging using recovery, pulling and editing a file, replacing it and then supposedly can allow my pc to connect to adb on the device using adb keys...but its all hypothetical. whats worse is even if i do get it working by some miracle, id still have to figure a way to register the device to my Mobizen account...and then figure out how to even start the app from the phone and...ugh...
someone on stackexchange said they were able to do so with a galaxy s3 that had a busted touch, but my S5 has NO screen at all. worth a shot you think? or should i just figure out a way to make $100 quick...or worse, beg someone with a waterlogged device to let me have their screen?
heres a link to the method/madness to get their usb debugging active

They are an issue with an att s5, you can flash either of those with odin. If you can get a screen you should be good but otherwise unless you were already rooted I don't know of any way.

after my experiences using CM and AOSP, i really dont mind using stock TW after rooting, removing all the junk like launcher and carrier stuff. im pretty fluent in modifying the interactive gov for balancing performance and battery life. this things pretty beast anyway, so i dont anticipate much issue with gaming and stuff.
just for reference, towelroot DOES work with the latest update correct? and MM will be pushed at some point?
