[Q] Problems With Kies - Galaxy Tab General

Hiya
I have been a member of XDA Developers for a while now and have found the site very helpful for Windows based mobiles. I have taken a giant step and brought a Samsung Galaxy Tab which to be fair I have been very happy with.
Last night I was " playing " with KIES to see what it would do and I was advised I needed an update, so I duly backed up the handset and went ahead with the update. All seemed to be going well until about 1 hour in when there was no progress on the update. Being sensible I went to bed and left it overnight only to find the same status. I called Samsung and was told in no uncertain terms there was no upgrade. Now I know I wasnt going to get an upgrade to the next version of Android and I already had 2.2 Froyo but that doesnt mean to say Samsung hadnt released an interim update (and searches here and elsewhere suggest this is the case)
Anyway to cut a long story short I had to terminate the upgrade and attempt to roll it back by reconnecting the handset. I was unable to do this as the initial attempt to update had bricked my handset to the degree it became totally unresponsive and I couldnt even turn it off. When I thought I had it came back on with coloured line horizonally arcross the screen.
At this point I gave up and returned the unit to the Carphone Warehouse who refused to replace it on the basis I have had it just over 28 days. It is therefore gone for repair (probably to be reflashed). When I spoke to the salesman he advised I was not the first go in with a KIES related problem. Given my later research and the information from him I can say that I wont be using KIES again and I suggest that other people are careful too.
What I would like to know, going forward is there any other option apart from KIES to upgrade a Samsung handset ? Im thinking ahead for when Gingerbread comes out.
Thanks for reading.
Ken

read the galaxy tab development section... there is a flashing too called odin, which can be downloaded over at samfirmware together with the actual firmware

How will T-Mobile firmware updates roll out?

I'm getting kinda frustrated by the lack of information I'm finding on this. I got a T-Mobile Tab for Christmas; I noticed there's no Software Update option in Settings. After some digging, I find in the Samsung User's manual (for the T-Mobile variant) that updates will be through Kies Mini, and that Kies is available on samsungapps.com. That site tells me that Samsung Apps are not available in the US. So after more digging, I find the Kies Mini app, install it on my netbook and fire it up. After switching from ADW back to the TouchWiz launcher to get Kies to recognize my device, it still says that my Tab is not supported for firmware updates.
If there's something I'm missing, please let me know. I understand that there's probably no official updates available yet anyway, but this is something I need to sort out before my 30 return period is up. I do not want to get stuck with a device that is going to be this much of a hassle to update, not to mention CES is in a couple weeks, and I know there's going to be many more, much more well-featured tablets being launched.
Thanks in advance guys and gals.
As that are no known issues with the tab at this time you can expect no updates for quite some time. The first and possibly only update will come if the go with the gingerbread update, if samsung provides it. This is a good mindset to be in if you don't want to get dissapointed later. I have the tmo tab and have gone with jmc eufopean firmware. If I am stuck here forever I will still be satisfied.

Well, I'm used to being disappointed when it comes to updates... I own a Droid X I would expect, however, there to be maintenance updates. With there being several unofficial firmwares floating around out there, you can't ignore the fact that Samsung is at least working on a bug fix update. I'm not really wondering WHEN I'll be getting updates, so much as HOW I'll be getting updates. Just frustrates me to no end that I haven't yet even found a way for my device to check to see if there's an update available. I don't care that there isn't one, just want to know how to get it when there is.
/rant
Like your experience, I had to hunt for Kies and after installing it discovered it said I had an unsupported device. I checked with T-Mobile and was told not to use Kies at all, but that any updates will come over the air instead. No need to "check in" like I did before this device, but it will just appear as a system notice when it is time. He didn't say, and I didn't think to ask at the time, whether the updates will come from T-Mo, Google, or Samsung, but maybe that doesn't really matter, any that are due will just appear.
At least your tab can do ota

Kies vs. OTA

Can someone post (or re-post) a link to where T-mobile or Samsung says the update is only via Kies?
This assumes that millions of Vibrant owners a) are PC-savvy enough to update that way, b) run Windows in the first place (unless there is a linux version of Kies that I don't know about, please post link if you do)... while not *utterly* outside the realm of possibility, when you step back and look this is a pretty ridiculous thought that doesn't pass the smell test for me until I see some kind of proof.
Which leads me to the point that unless you have gotten a text or update notification on your phone from T-mobile with layman-friendly (pre-noob) instructions on how to use kies to update your phone from stock eclair to stock froyo, I don't believe that what is on Kies necessarily corresponds to what will be pushed OTA.
In fact I think it's quite possible if not likely that last second changes/fixes may have necessitated a final KA7 last night to hit the airwaves with "today".
Anyone have a screenshot of an OTA *NOTIFICATION* having been sent to them, and what form that takes and what instructions it gives? That's the proof I want to see.

For the Mini Kies notification
http://yfrog.com/f/gy2nwxlj/
As I wrote in a couple of other threads. You are right. This is just a voluntarily upgrade. And I think it was mainly to shut up to angry power users. As proof we have the KA7 leak that just came out today and the version Kies is updating is KA6. The mandatory OTA will be coming some time later but this seems to be a move to quiet down the press about the whole Froyo update issue. If this was the official update from T-mobile we would probably have the source code today as well, which is what we here on XDA really want.
Interesting. This is the first time that I've seen any kind of documentation showing that TMO won't be doing distributing as an FOTA update. Thanks for the heads up KA7. Still running JL5 while I've been waiting for things to settle down somewhat. Hopefully KA7 will be the last official release for the next month or so now.
any word on what version KA7 is? 2.2.1?

Agreed... and personally I'm waiting for Nero 6 (7?). But I'm going to be very interested in what T-mobile says *externally* today.
A promise of an update today from someone that high up at T-mobile... I'm sorry, when average josephine-housewife who bought a pretty Vibrant from the nice man at the T-mobile stand at Wal-Mart finds out that it *isn't* just a click-click-click on their phone like JI6 was... there's going to be a *lot* of very pissed off callers (and T-mobile phone support techs).
This effectively makes it an update that isn't really an update for everyone who has a Vibrant, not even everyone who has a Vibrant on T-mobile, and if that's the way it's left I'd be very surprised. I don't think that that is the message they want to send right now. "See, we updated today. Sorta..."
*This* update isn't mandatory, isn't FOTA. There could be an OTA 2 hours later discussed in their "Community". Not in the scope of the update being discussed in that screenshot.
It's entirely possible, now that I think about it, that KA6 is where features and so forth freeze, and that KA7 (and higher) are more focused on fixing anything that could break during OTA update, which could be (supportably) from JI6 *or* JFD.
We'll just have to see, but right now all we have proof of is that there is an update, and it is on Kies. I think that there *has* to be an honest to god OTA coming. To not do so almost guarantees that you will end up having a very high number of customers still on 2.1, perhaps over 50%, out of sheer laziness or lack of information/confidence to update. That support nightmare, again, just doesn't pass the smell test.
Also Kies Mini is refusing to update my phone, and I'm not sure how many people will haev a similar issue but it downloaded a bunch of **** and told me my phone could not be upgraded 5 times in a row.
How many battery pulls do I have to do before the damn thing actually updates?
Terrible experience, IMO, and a huge waste of time seeing as how some of us don't have the fastest internet connections out there...
That software also tends to choke spectacularly on Windows 7 (both 32 and 64-Bit) and AFAIK it does not run on Mac or Linux computers.
On the flip side, T-Mobile's coverage is bad so they put themselves into a corner when it comes to FOTA updates. I'm not driving 20 miles just do download a smartphone update because they only have GPRS and Weak Edge (1-2 Bars) around me...

Since the 11th April, did you get nodo on Omnia 7

Dear Omnia owners,
It seems that the NoDo update is no longer available for Omnia 7 users since 2 weeks.
For my own case, i got the ndo notification on my phone, but i can't do the update immediatly, so i try 5 day later, and Zune says that my phone is up to date...
So i just want to know how many of us meet the same problem.
Thanks for your reply.
EDIT: So Nodo has been stop:
"Yes, we've temporarily stopped sending updates to Omnia7s. The team discovered a technical issue with the update package for this model. The work of fixing and testing the package is nearly done, and the team hopes to resume update deliveries soon. When I know more about the timing, I'll pass it along." (Michael Stroh -> MS Employee)

Yes, no more NODO at least officially, and your readings are totally correct. Well, I am going to do it with Chevron updater right now.
Same here.....
Got my Omnia 7 on 9th of April with T-Mob Branding. Used to flash that device to have the original Firmware and no Branding.
Just after flashing I got the notification of pre-NoDo but that it.
Looking at many forums around this topic, you'll find so much owners with that problem!
Same problem here. Got a message that there was an update available, few days later I tried to update: untill today Zune keeps telling me that my phone is up to date...
no update for me since I got my phone on the 4th,only pre nodo

Same here. Going ringing them tomorrow and give out ****.
I was one of those who got nodo update with Hungary connection and 15 sec data trick.
Now I sent of my phone for repair and it came back with 7004 and it won't update past 7008. Sick of this ****

In a different boat here, contract gets renewed end of april, jumping over to an Atrix or Galaxy S2, sick of MS updates already, I knew it was a mistake buying into the first wave of WP7 devices, maybe by next year when nokia gets on board it'll be a viable platform
I got the notification at the beginning of the month but the next day when I connected it to my computer it said it was up to date.
Maybe they pulled it because they're waiting for a samsung firmware update or something. I don't really care that I don't have it yet since it is only a minor update. This is their first update and by the time mango and other updates are released I'm sure it will go smoother.
A french guy had a contact with Samsung, ang the samsung guys told him that Nodo has been hold for Omnia 7 for un unknown period of time...
He just say to connect his phone to zune from time to time.
To be confirmed, but MS is not to be blamed but Samsung yes!
Same here ...
Wish I'd read this topic 2 days ago
No longer works for me either, did a system restore, on the phone which already was updated to NoDo, so it went back to 7008. and then I couldn't refla**** back to 7390 Tried for hours lol
Damn you samsung!
I have this problem to as Orange replaced my phone when trying to resolve an issue with dropping signal..... Now I still have signal issue and old software.

same problem here. bought my omnia 7 five days ago. it seems i was too little too late...still loving wp7 though and ready to wait some time. a statement of microsoft or samsung would be nice, though.
Some people said that Nodo for Omnia was removed because of an issue that devices wouldn't be able to update after that. However this is very unofficial...
It seems to be clear that the NoDo update has been removed for omnia 7.
But MS refused to talk about it, and no web sites gives the news, what can we do?
Maybe can you post the info on your favorite WP7 news site?
same problem...
Can I suggest we post here and demand some answers...
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_phone/b/windowsphone/?PageIndex=2
I know alot of the media read this blog and Microsoft have issued appologies etc... as a result of large numbers of negaive posts to this blog..
Personally I am feeling really annoyed at the lack of information...
I previously had the update on my Orange UK Omnia 7 but Orange in their wisdom decided to change my phone to try to cure a dropping signal problem...
So new Omnia 7 arrived and updated to the Feb 11 update without problems.
Then I waited for the 2nd update but nothing!!! So its been a week now..
I actually use copy and paste quite alot and need access to GAL 2003 for business. Both these features should have been in the original release but six months later I am now on version 7008 and dont have the features....CRAZY!!!
So today I tried to get some answers and called the following....
Orange UK ....they had no idea updates were not working suggested I get phone flashed at a repair center.
Samsung... Say they are not responsible for updates only hardware so I should talk to Microsoft. The woman I spoke to just tried to get rid of me and I probably will not buy another Samsung product after that experience.
Microsoft... call routed to India... they had no idea about updates told me it was the responsibility of the OEM. They said Microsoft had no technical team to answer Windows Phone issues.
Unbelievable !!!!!!!!!!!!
No Nodo update for my unlocked version, too.
I got it today.

Samsung sucks

Why is it necessary to do a full factory reset to get Kies to connect to my Samsung tab? I've spent 12+ hours trying to get the damn thing to connect to my tablet. Nothing worked! I was forced to do a full reset and Kies immediately recognized the device.
So after doing all of this I found out I have the latest firmware. I guess the official release for the US is not out yet. After chatting with Samsung online support I was told at this time they had no release date due to bugs. So I guess Samsung is unable to complete an update for a Wi Fi only device in a reasonable amount of time. I made a mistake by getting a Samsung tablet.
I should have known this would happen after they never bothered to issue 2.3 update for my Vibrant. Well I'm done with Samsung.
I don't know why people need to flood the forum with these threads. Nobody cares if you are butt hurt over Samsung and their updates or if you never get another Samsung product again. Nobody.
Edit: In the amount of time that it took you to register here, and type out and post those 2 posts of yours you could have rooted your Gtab and been on your way to loading one of the great ICS or JB Rom's available in the Dev section. Seriously

I have a question for you. You "should have known" and you "made a mistake" by buying a Galaxy Tab. Generally when people make mistakes that they should have known were wrong they generally don't come to a world wide forum and profess their bad judgement.
So, my question. What motivates you to confess your poor judgement here?
Yeah...you are right. Samsung sucks. And apple too. And all of the multibillion companies who get richer and richer by sucking the blood of the working people. Now get a life and do a search prior to buying anything.

I just had to get it off my chest I feel much better now!
Don't blame Samsung for not releasing GB for Vibrant, that is the carriers fault. It came out for the Captivate, so I know they had a version.
As for the Gtab, you can read the same kind of stuff in other manufactures phone threads. I saw one today pissed about the Evo LTE not getting anything and ranting about HTC this and that.... that is why I come to xda. Who cares about ICS from Samsung when we are already ahead of the curve with JB!
I am so happy on CM10. The 0809 build is great and does enough to be a daily driver for me. I switch back and forth between this and Task14.
Everyone knows Kies sucks...Samsung isn't a software house. Root and get on ICS or JB like the others are saying...you're wasting valuable time!
I'm not gonna say Samsung sucks... but what the hack is the hold up for 4.0.4 sources?
The rom's already out it's about time to release the source code and give back to the Android community.
And then we'll have sweet sweet OC/UV Kernel to play with.

Kies sucks. Most people know that. You chose to spend 12+ hours stressing yourself out when a quick search here would have led you to Odin and flashing the UK ICS update or rooting and installing one of the great custom ROMs here. Neither would have taken you anywhere NEAR 12+ hours. Oh, and if you were backing up regularly a factory reset would be no big deal.
BTW, don't believe what a customer service rep tells you. Chances are they aren't given any more info about the updates than we are.
Didn't aware of the source just released. Thanks!
Samsung is now officially un-dead to me.

S3 Update in UK Gets Worse. (as if that was possible) Now the update has been remove

Since last Wednesday I have been one of the people who when I tried the OTA update, got the message saying, update service is not available, maximum number of roll out has been released, try later or upgrade through Kies.
Not that you could upgrade through Kies, as that always came back saying the latest firmware was installed.
As if 5 days of that message was not enough!
This morning Monday 9th December, that message has gone and it's gone back to just saying. Latest updates have already been installed.
It's as if the hope of an upgrade has been dangled in front of me for 5 days and now Taken away.
It certainly hasn't been updated. Unless the new version is keeping the random 5 to 10 second wait for the lock screen to undo, due to popular demand.
My phone is an unlocked S3 that was not supplied by a carrier, so was supposed to be one of the ones updated first.
How bad can you make a problem Samsung. Was the roll out of crap firmware not enough for you.
Nick
f*ck samsung!
Unless Samsung pulls off a miracle with future updates I intend to stay with custom ROMs! Currently I am using the 4.3-based SentinelRom which works perfectly. KitKat needs more time to mature on our phones.
