I'm trying to revert back to stock on my Epic. I previously flashed using Clockwork and wanted to try Odin this time around but when I put the phone into Download mode my computer doesn't recognize the device. I've tried multiple cables and USB ports including one on the board itself. I am using Windows 7x64 and have the 64 bit samsung drivers installed properly. If I do a battery pull and boot the phone normally the computer recognizes the phone no problem.
Any ideas?

I was having a similar issue with my MBpro, nothing would recognize my phone. Tried it on another comp and bingo. I think stuff is just finicky with USB ports. Lame-o.

Yea...this post made my brain hurt...and of course didn't change anything...but..thanks?
Here's another piece of info that may help nail down the problem...
Odin is able to see the phone if I boot into Clockwork recovery mode but because clockwork is up the phone can't receive a flash but Odin does see the phone with no problem. It just still won't see the phone when booted into download mode.

I use windows7 64 too. I encountered tons of problems when trying to flash my epic. first my computer doesn't recognize my phone in download mode. after i wipe out all the drivers and reinstall them. finally i get my computer recognize it under download mode, but Odin froze every time during the flash.
Finally, i tried on another desktop computer with windows XP. Everything went perfectly. So maybe you should try that too.
I cannot connect to my Epic in download mode on mac os x either.
I was trying to install a lag fix, and now all my phone will do when powering on is show switch between the normal Samsung screen, and another reading "Samgung GT I9000".
I can still boot into Clockwork Recovery. But OS X will not recognize my phone.
Either that, or Heimdall isn't recognizing it and won't let me flash.
Help! Any ideas?

I had the same problem, I couldn't connect it to 3 of my pc's. 2 xp's and one windows 7. Turned out the port on the phone it self was broken, had to take it sprint and get it replaced.

If OS X isn't recognising your phone it's likely your phone has the buggy secondary bootloader. Samsung corrected the bootloader for at least the GT-I9000 JPA firmware but I'm unsure if they have done so for other devices or firmware releases.
Unfortunately the only solution then is to use Windows or Linux. If you don't have access to a system running either of these OS then I recommend downloading a 64-bit release (assuming your PC has a 64-bit CPU) of Ubuntu, then you can download the Heimdall binaries from my website and use it to recover your phone.
i had an extremely similar issue as to what you are having. I have 3 win 7 machines and 1 xp, none worked. I went to a friends house he has 2 win 7s and an xp also didnt work. I did a general search and found all kinds of crap. One dude something about using his chicks blackberry usb cord and suddenly it worked on any and all of the machines it had previously not worked. so at the time im reading this on my chicks laptop which has a damn blackberry cord attached to it chargin her evo(go figure) ... anyway u didnt need the whole story but i have nothing to do right now.
Point is everyone says try different cords, i say try the damn blackberry cord if you happen to have one or a friend that has one.

Is it the hardware on the Macbook pro itself? or just the OS? in other words, If I were to partition my macbook with ubuntu would that work with heimdall? would it be able to recognize my phone while it's in download mode as opposed to OSX, which couldn't...?

In this particular instance Apple haven't done anything wrong at all, both their hardware and software is fine. The issue is that Samsung are distributing secondary bootloaders that aren't complaint with the USB specifications.
Whilst that is annoying, the good news for you is that you can simply install Linux (Ubuntu etc.) or Windows on your Macbook and you'll be able to flash just fine.
Trying to fix a friends Vibrant...
He was running jk6 software when the phone bricked itself in his pocket (?).
Now, the only thing we can do is access download mode by holding down the power button.
If I run Odin, and try to start up the phone into download mode, none of the COM Ports detect the phone, even though he is in download mode. Conventional methods don't work (Starting up ODIN, Plug in USB, hold down volume buttons). Only way I access download mode is by holding the power button down.
Any Help?
Try switching to a different USB port.

You need to make sure the computer has the usb drivers installed. Simple plug and play won't work. Its good you can get into download mode. Look in the bible sticky and download and install the usb drivers. Also if its windows vista or 7, when you open odin don't double click it. Right click and run as administrator. Also, make sure you open odin first before you connect the phone to the computer. Good luck.

Drivers have already been installed.
I can access download mode perfectly using my Vibrant and ODIN recognizes it, but when i plug my friends Vibrant in, thats when the problems happen.
For the record, when I plug my friends Vibrant into the USB port..a message pops up saying that one of the usb devices attached has malfunctioned (Code 43). I'm thinking this is directly related to ODIN not recognizing it (although it recognizes mine)
If you can reach download mode fear not its not an issue with the phone its definitely a problem with the drivers or maybe even try a different usb cable.
Yea, but I can only reach download mode. Phone will not boot into recovery, or even start up, just download mode lol. And i dont think its the USB, seeing as how i can plug in my other Vibrant and odin detects it immediately (on the same computer).

Well if the very same usb cable and port recognizes your phone (I'm assuming you both have the same exact phones) and odin recognizes your phone and not his, then his usb port on his phone must be where the problem lies... Try looking it, or even opening your phone and cleaning his usb port or something. Or try a different computer. if you can get into download mode don't worry, you'll find a way to fix your phone.
Still having the same problems. Tried a different USB cable, different computer running Odin...no luck. Only my computer detects that the phone even exists by shooting me an error saying that the device has malfunctioned. Phone just stays in download mode...Odin doesnt detect it. I've tried different methods to have ODIN detect it and still nothing.
Had to go through this too, but didn't have another phone in download mode to test against.
Win7 x64, tried a bunch of different drivers, but in the end was running the ones that come with Samsung Kies. In my case it ended up working without the original samsung cable (just a generic one), and with a USB port hanging right off my motherboard at the back of my tower. I have two USB ports on the front of my tower and they always errored, no matter what combinations I tried (including the same cable and driver). But when I switched to a port at the back, I got past the malfunctioning USB device error. Also, it seemed like Odin likes to be running when the phone boots into download mode. This took hours but phone runs perfectly now.
I've searched all over the posts and google and have yet to find a solution. I am a MAC user and trying to restore fascinate. I am stuck at Samsung screen. I can get into Clockwork Mod Voodoo.
When i did my last backup I never enabled USB Debugging. I can not ./adb into device, nor can I use ODIN on friends PC. (No Device) Same result with Heimdal "Failed to detect Device" I would just like to get back to stock. Is there a step by step guide to recover similar to ODIN get you back to stock but for a MAC. Or since i never enabled Debug mode I should just use my warranty?
When you tried Odin, did you have the battery out and put the phone in download mode?

Yes, I did see the Yellow triangle Droid character w/ shovel
So, battery out and in download mode, Odin doesn't recognize? Hm

Does it recognize the phone at all? Maybe the drivers need to be updated

Morning, I'm attempting to resolve the same issue. I have the "Yellow Shovel" Andy but I can't get Odin to recognize the device.
The device was fine and Odin was working last night, however I do believe I did something ridiculous last night. I tried flashing my phone with a Nexus S rom and succeeded. HOWEVER, the only buttons that are recognized are the "Home" and "Menu" soft keys.
I can boot into the 2.3 Nexus S rom but I can't get the hardware to recognize anymore.
UPDATE: I managed to get the USB to recognize. I'm not completely sure how, it just started recognizing it after fidgeting with the cable. I'm not flashing it back to stock using ODIN and the following post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867648
UPDATE: The link above worked. I recommend using the stock USB cable that comes with the phone. Now that it's back.. I'm curious to know what I would have to change for 2.3 to work.. hm..

Alright, so I've been trying to figure out why Windows doesn't recognize my phone in Download Mode (attempting to get EB13) and I've now realized it doesn't even detect it in Mass Storage mode (Windows tells me a USB device was not recognized when I connect it)
Any ideas?
I'm stumped here...
Note: tried it on both x86 and x64 versions of Windows.
Download the latest drivers. As for download mode areu trying to use odin?

Check the "teeth" in where the cable connects to your phone. Some people have had them bend out of place.

Just downloaded them onto my x86 machine, and even when connecting my phone in normal mode (when it's fully on) it tells me device not recognized.
So at this point, I'm not even focusing on Odin, because nothing seems to be able to see my phone over USB.
I've even tried a different cable, but to no avail.
And yeah, I tried the Samsung EB13 download and I tried Odin. Neither could see it (just like Windows).
Other then this, it works perfectly fine. So it's not like I bricked it or anything.
Having the same issue. Tried multiple computers, reinstalling the drivers, and multiple USB cables. No luck. Makes things tough trying to get EB 13.

Alright, so I'm not alone here...
Windows actually seems to have just recognized it while powered up fully (and is currently installing the drivers).
Figure I'll let that finish and then try Download Mode again.
And then hope for the best I guess.
EDIT: It seems to be working now.
The Samsung EB13 utility is doing its thing in Download Mode.
Crossing my fingers it finishes without incident.
Uninstall drivers then install then reboot pc and phone then try. If reboot didn't solve the problem reboot phone and try again.
Epic 4g
Well, it seemed to be working.
But now my phone has a green screen and the EB13 utility is stuck on "FACTORYFS" and the progress bar says "Elapsed Time: 18sec.... 4%"
I really hope this didn't brick my Epic
anyone know where the drivers are for the epic
shud be somewhere on this site.. or on samsungs website.. its easy to just google..
I have had my Samsung Facinate rooted for some time.
Wanted to install the Ice Cream Sandwich.
So i went into Download mode using the USB plugged into phone and then holding both up/down volume buttons. Once in download mode loaded up
ODIN3 added PIT s1_odin_20100512.pit and PDA T959UVJFD click start it got to Cache and froze nothing showed up on phone screen or anything.
Now all phone does is stay on the "black screen with phone icon Tricangle with exclamation mark and computer icons"
I have tried removing battery and booting phone using vol up/down+power and few other ways to no avail? Everything i get is that one set of icons.
Any help? Thanks
can you still get the phone into download mode.
Remove battery
hold voulme down
plug in usb
You should get a yellow triangle
If you do get a yellow triangle, then there is still hope and i would be willing to
walk you through it.
With battery out and plugged USB in vol down does nothing. Once i put battery in the phone...exclamation...computer icons show thats it.
For reference here is the files i was using.

I hate to tell you but if you can't get into download mode, or three finger into recovery you may be SOL
I plugged phone in wall charger with battery out, held down volume down button and put battery in. It went into download mode. But still cant get it to do into that mode when hooked to computer.
Also i was using Windows XP when i was using ODIN when it froze.
That seems odd. I'm assuming you've tried a different USB port. Don't use a hub try to use one that is connected dirrectly to the motherboard. And just to clarify is this a telus or Verizon phone. It is also possible that an xp machine is using USB 1.0. I recommend at least 2nd gen USB.
I GOT IT!! Put all needed files on my Vista laptop and it would not recognize it either. Until i plugged in USB and then held down vol button then put in battery and it was recognized! Continued on what i was doing. Installed flawless.
First time i ever found something my XP machine could not handle.
Also this is a Telus phone.
Been there in your shoes in the exact sane spot. These phones are truly very hard to fully brick.

Glad you fixed it but you don't have a Vibrant. Using files with Vibrant in the name is a surefire way to temp brick your phone. Likewise, those ROMS ,radios, and partition file are all not for the Fascinate. Basically, it doesn't matter if it says GS1. If it doesn't come from the Fascinate forum then don't flash it.
In any case, this is pretty much a case study for doing absolutely everything wrong and still not being able to brick the Fascinate.
