I know there are various threads like this one but my situation is a bit different. I tried using odin to clean install 2.2 to then use the custom rom epic experience. I attempted to install 2.2 using odin but it would get stuck in "setup connection" and I would have to quit and try again. Last time I tried my phone got the "phone connection caution computer" icon and to get into recovery I would have to hold the power and camera button, not the volume down button. When I go to try and install things straight from my SD card I would get an error like "status 7" cus I didn't have the sprint apps to install 2.2. I believe I get these errors installing straight from the card cus I rooted my phone, modifying the kernal cus I read somewhere because when trying to update, it tries to verify but can't cus things are missing or edited cus of the root. I can't try to use odin again because my computer can't recognize the phone anymore regardless reinstalling the samsung drivers. SOOOO, I'm basically ****ing stuck for sure I think. The way I access the SD card is by using an adapter. The only way I see this working is if I find a fix using the SD card, but it's looking slim cus of the stupid root.
Have you tried powering the phone off, sliding the keyboard open, and holding down the number 1 and power? That should throw it straight back into download mode no matter how screwed up it is. Once that's done, start odin, select the files, and THEN reconnect the usb cable.
Worst case, the phone came with a microSD -> SD adapter, and a USB card reader is like $10. Put a stock firmware on there as update.zip and try to boot it into recovery.

Gee, thanks for the help.
Restart your computer, start odin, then put phone in download mode, connect phone, take out battery while leaving the usb connected, you should be connected. Flash with odin.
Edit: if it doesn't connect try unpluging while the battery is out, plug back in, then turn on download mode while usb is connected with no battery.

Rusty, here's some info on going back to stock, if you can get Odin to see the phone again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773032 and http://www.multiupload.com/X9AB1U56JV has the .tar download (remove the .md5 extension before attempting to flash).
Alternatively, if you have AIM, hit me up at lifeofbean and we'll see if we can find a way to get it working.

I had problems with the front USB always losing connection to my phone, but the back USB ports always worked.
Definitely try a different usb cable, I had the same issue before.

This depends more on the specific computer than anything else. Sometimes front USB ports may be acting as their own hub, especially if they're part of, say, a card reader. Othertimes the USB ports plug directly into a header on the motherboard, those will work fine.
Please post questions in General section.
Mod moved this thread when I made another one in the general forums. Well I fixed my phone. I used my mom's lappy which recognized my phone, then used odin to flash the stock kernal, then I rooted it to then use odin to flash 2.2 onto it and everything is back to normal! I seriously thought I was done for. Thanks for the help you guys I greatly appreciate it.

Take out your battery. Connect the phone to the computer to give it power then hold the 1 key on your keyboard and the power button.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
go here and download the first .tar file and open "odin." Put the .pit file in pit and modem in phone. Make sure only reboot is checked then hit start. If that doesn't work don't be afraid to mess around with odin, your phone's already bricked It can be fixed. If odin can't recognize the phone then try this on a different comp on a different os.
nvm, i got it. had to take out the battery.

preciate the help bro!
I tried searching thoroughly, but nothing matched my problem and no solution worked. I hope someone out there can help me with this:
My vibrant had TMO's Froyo with Team Whiskey's Bionix V and Dragon voodoo OC v3.1 kernel
I used clockwork 2.5.1.3 to flash Bionix V 1.2 with voodoo.
I didnt disable voodoo (first time i ever did that, being told that I didnt need to by friends and numerous forums.)
Phone rebooted, showing Dragon's logo, then a strange split-second blip occured and I was back into clockwork red. I tried rebooting and the same thing happened.
Now, my phone reboots only into clockworkmod red (can still access clockwork green by "apply sdcard:update.zip").
Cannot odin because usb is no longer working for some reason (which means I cannot adb either).
I can only access download mode through clockwork 2.5.1.3 (advanced ->Reboot to Download Mode).
when I plug in to recharge, it shows the battery with the loading circle in the center, then the phone reboots to cwm red.
After getting frustrated, I foolishly started applyig all wipes and attempted to install all zip files i had. all files say E:cant mount yadda yadda.
I'm at a total loss. I dont think I bricked because the phone turns on and I can access red and green clockwork.
Please, someone help...I dont wanna throw the phone from the roof only to get a hardware locked one from TMO's warranty, lol.

You should be able to Odin..try these steps
Remove battery and put it back in (to make sure phone is powered off)
Disconnect USB from phone and Open Odin
While holding both Volume buttons...insert USB back into phone
Phone should boot into Download mode
Odin that sh*t
I did all that, i dont get the COMM port in Odin, so I did "adb devices", and got "list of devices attached" with no list. When I insert the USB cable, I dont even hear the usual windows tone acknowledging the new device. This leads me to believe that the USB on the phone is not working. tried it with 2 different cables on 2 different phones using all USB ports.

do you have the correct drivers? try installing the drivers from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
and try again
I've used odin in mid Jan, so I know the drivers are up to date.
Here's what will freak you out even more. if I remove the battery while the phone is plugged in (to the wall or to the computer), the phone shuts off. BUT, if the phone is off with the battery in and I plug the phone (again, to wall or comp), the battery indicator with loading circle shows up. before I know how much battery I have left, the phone automatically boots into red cwm without me touching anything. I can post a video on youtube if it will help at all.

Getting Odin to work is your best bet
you say the phone can go into download mode...but if Odin can't recognize it then there's 1 of 2 things goin on:
1. The correct drivers are not installed
2. You arent using the up-to-date Odin
Odin is the way to go, I used odin and got the stock vibrant files from google, it is not a rom its the original stock vibrant files
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Ok,
reinstalling driver v1.3.450.0 from the link you sent me.
using Odin 1.7
Its not that odin cant recognize, its that the usb appears to not be working except to show the empty battery with the loading circle. I'll try again, and make a video so you can see whats going on.
Try rebooting your computer also. Sometimes when my computer will not connect to my phone a reboot fixes the problem.
Just to re-itterate.
After you have re-installed drivers, reboot your PC.
Then open Odin up.
Then pull your battery on you phone, put it back in, hold only the volume buttons and plug the usb cable in. (Just in case, take out SD CARD and SIM card, older version of odin didn't like those being in either)
Load PIT and JFD stock rom.
Flash.
Double check the following.
You need to make sure ODIN is already up and running first. Also make sure that you are not using a USB extender or HUB as odin often does not like those. If you are using a desktop, plug the cable directly into the USB port in the back of the PC.
If you are using a LT, try different ports as not all USB ports provide full power on all laptops.
The PC reboot is important. I have seen ADB get stuck in the background and nothing works right. Let us know how it goes.
I can tell you that you are not completely bricked. As long as you are getting into CWM you are still ok.
Alright, Ive been browsing these forums ever since I got a Captivate and now I am trying to help a friend that has an Epic. They currently have dk28. Their Epic has always been Flakey on being detected on computers. We have tried three, it only gets detected on Mass storage on one of those and doesnt get detected in dowload mode on any of them. That being said, We cannot get back to stock via Odin, or use the Samsung official Update due to that it will not be detected in download mode. Can anyone tell me is there anything I can do at this point? Ive already tried 3 cables, uninstalling and re-installing drivers, etc... I am hoping maybe there is some way to get back to stock without odin, then from there getting to EB13 without the use of a computer. Thanks in advance and I look forward to posing here.....
Did you restart the computer at all?
usb debugging enabled?
i have trouble connecting sometimes and it's always solved by restarting the phone.

Are you placing the phone in Download mode???
****Ensure USB Debugging is Enabled.
Download mode:
1. power off the phone.
2. Press 1 + Power button together
otherwise, I would highly recommend to:
1. uninstall drivers
2. restart the PC
3. install the Samsung drivers
4. restart
5. try connecting the phone (while powered on) and letting the PC recognize it.
6. Once drivers are installed, unplug the USB cable and Power off the phone
7. Place the phone in download mode and reconnect the USB cable and let the secondary drivers install.
8. unplug and reboot the phone, and restart the PC for last time.
Try Odin now, remember you need the phone in Download mode to use Odin.
Note: Yes I know I send the OP to restart many times his PC but, with windows we can never "restart" to much...
Couple things:
What OS are you using? If vista or 7, plug it in in debugging and go to the devices window in control panel, see if there is a samsung device there. If there is, right click and look at properties..check to see if there's an adb driver. If you see other drivers but not adb then its matter of getting the drivers to install somehow.
Second, there IS a full di18.zip, and a modem updater.zip to di18 as well, both flashable in CWM..(I believe its in a thread started by noobnl, its kinda old)...you might only have to do the .zip though since you'll eventually be going to the eb13 modem. I don't know for sure.
But be wary: switching android versions with CWM can be dangerous. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but it can actually be riskier than using odin. I would say use this only in last resort.
If you decide to do this, MAKE SURE you have the full download (I say download twice and compare the sizes just to make sure), have a full battery and keep it plugged in, and do your 3x wipes
Good luck

Im Using Vista and No Drivers were there.... And I guess I may be at the last resort point. Full details?
some people have tried changing usb ports and it will work.
anyone else having problems not being able to connect phone to comp. can try this method but not sure if this works on the dk28.
what you could do is to remove the microsd card from phone use the adapter that came with it and put sd card into your laptop or if you have a external hub then your microsd will just be a storage devise then download the mac version of froyo from samsung (sorry i can't post outside links yet)but it is the samsung support downloads then search for this SPH-D700ZKASPR click on the software then download the mac version to comp. then copy and paste what you downloaded to the root of the sdcard (the first one you see when you open the sdcard) then put card back in phone, power off phone wait untill all lights go off press volume down, camera and power at same time. then in recovery chose update.zip from sd by using volume buttons to chose what you want to do then press the home button to start.
I had issues with mine taking the update (and issues with it beforehand) and getting it recognized on two different computer, multiple times, it seems completely random whether or not it would work sometimes.

this is how i put different updates in zip format on my phones sometimes my comp hesitates, so to make sure they go on sd card all the way this is how i do it. its doing the same as mounting phone in storage mode.

i just didn't want to wait for the ota and i found the update.zip on the samsung website yesterday at about 6 pm. downloaded it and it worked great. was rooted this morning at 7am and am good to go.

Yes change USB ports. The ones in the front normally don't work. You need one directly on the mortherboard

Hate to ask, but did you follow the instructions EXACTLY as the SW Updater tool says? Pull battery (next) - Download mode (next) - plug into PC (next) - Pull battery (again) (next).
One of the steps the tool does has to do with installing drivers... you mentioned Vista, but is it 32 or 64 bit? Have you tried a different PC?

I have the exact issue with my phone. I can only connect to my computer using the back usb ports (off the motherboard). I'm on windows 7. If you haven't, give that a shot. Even try uninstalling the drivers, connecting to the back usb ports and see what it does.
Saw someone post about Odin only working when they flipped the phone face down - thought it had something to do with the accelerometer. I suspect that in that case it might just be a bad connection and flipping the phone over made the contacts work. Worth trying though it you are desperate.
so i tried to update my phone to EC05 thru odin with the sydicaterom 1.1 (i was on 1.0.2) so i downloaded the modem and the odin package on this website for it and when i tried to flash it (was in download mode on my phone) it went stright to fail in odin and then my phone reset and now when i turn on my phone or plug it into the computer or wall charger it comes up with a little picture of a phone and then 2 dots and then a ! and then a little computer . and when i try to hold the power, cam, volume down buttons it does the same the only thing i can do on my phone is enter download mode thru power and holding 1 what can i do i am stuck. when i plug my phone into the computer so odin can read it nothing happens even when i put it in download mode my 2 computers wont read my phone

Your phone is probably not bricked if you can enter download mode.
Have you tried a different cable??? Also, for now - just to see if your phone is in bad shape, I would try to download a stock DI18 or something. Maybe the ROM image you have is corrupted.
tryin to find a different cable right now my kids went and hid my usb cable for my phone and using my gfs phone usb (which is a LG) but until then this is all i got lol but yea i did try different roms and the DI18 and EB which i was on and odin wont even get my phone to pop up

Why would you odin in the first place when we have the flashable.zips... Much easier. Just go back into download mode and reodin and you should be just fine.
i found the right cable but odin still wont find my phone =/. thats the problem is that odin wont do anything because it wont see my phone in download mode i DID get into CWM and tried reinstalling my roms and stuff but when it gets done installing whatever i want to install it restarts and goes to the whole phone and computer icon
Look through the general section in this forum and go to the how to video thread. It will show you how to properly use odin. There is also a video showing you how to update to ec05. Id post the link but I'm on my phone.

This happened to me and I had to pull my battery and start up in download mode again. Try that.
did what that guide said to do i put in download mode and plug my cable in and still no go it will not connect to computer nothing comes up in odin. i tried takin battery out and sd card and putting them back in and no go (also did with out battery in the phone)
I thought my phone was bricked it was stuck, I had pulled the battery out several times and nothing, so I left the battery out for a couple of hours and when I put the battery back in it started working, not sure why just happy it did, word to the wise sprint wont work on the phone unless you have everything back to stock, I tried before leaving the battery out, before I got to sprint the phone wouldnt do anything let it off over night to take to sprint to try and get a new one I figured since it wont boot at all they will never know, but as luck would have it when I got to sprint after giving up on the phone and leaving it off over night, the sprint rep turns it on and it goes straight to clock work :0, its worth a try
Did you install the samsung drivers?? Did you try different micro usb cables?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
tried different cables, different computers, different drivers, still nothing
Good news: As long as you can enter Download mode on your phone, it should not be bricked
Bad news: there are many reasons a computer would not see a phone in download mode
1) wrong/bad drivers
2) bad cable
3) bad/flakey USB port on computer
4) bad/flakey usb port on phone
my tip: With the phone in download mode, instead of trying to use ODIN, download the EB13 SWUpdate exe and try using that. It will wipe the phone just like ODIN, but is a lot less tempermental, and almost foolproof compaired to ODIN, and will retore the phone to stock EB13, at which point the EC05 update can be copied to the SD Card and then run to update to EC05

so what am i missing to get my vibrant to be recognised by odin in download mode????
What are you running currently?
simply honey 3.6..... gingerbread
By chance did you forget to enable usb debugging?
idk, i flashed from a 2.2.1 rom to simply honey 3.6 through rom manager, but i did have it enabled through before i flashed for sure.... And usb debugging is not required for download mode as (i think) thats a whole different thing???
It needs to be enabled to use Odin. Also, sometimes for Odin to see my phone I have to unplug my phone and open Odin a few times before I finally get Odin to see my phone. It's very finicky for me, always has been

Go into windows device manager. Make sure that your computer is even seeing the device and that it has recognized the drivers for it. If it recognizes it, try rebooting computer then restart the process. Also make sure your phone is actually in DOWNLOAD mode. Not Recovery mode.
If you do not know the difference between the two, let us now and we'll assist further.
Happy hacking!
I use to always have trouble with Odin..then one day someone mentioned they always right clicked on Odin and chose "run as Administrator", I have never done that because I figured I was the administrator....but once I did it, never had a problem since.
Another problem I run into (well not anymore) is the USB port I plugged into. If I was on a hub or something it wouldn't work. If I plug right into my computer it works properly.
I also use adb commands to get into download and recovery when I'm Odin'ing. It also let's me know if my phone is detected by the OS.
#adb devices (should show your phone listed)
#adb reboot download (reboots your phone into download mode)
#adb reboot recovery (reboots your phone into recovery mode)
You'll need the SDK installed for adb to work.
Since I started doing these things, I have had ZERO problems with Odin and flashing my phone.
ay.. usb debuging was enabled before i flashed... now if my turn turns on it goee onto a bootloop... so everytime i cinnect my phone to the computer it says device not recognised. ohh and one thing to mention is that my computer doesnt have a highspeed usb port
Three button to download mode - power+vol up+vol down and see if you can get it into download mode then plug in usb (1.0 should work), then run odin...
otherwise i think you're looking at trying to make one of those jigs or replacing your phone...
try
1. Start Odin
2. Plug USB cable into pc
3. Power off the Phone.
3. Pull the Battery.
5. Plug USB cable into Phone.
6. Press and Hold: Volume UP + Volume DOWN + Power, all at the same time.
7. Re-insert the battery.
8. The phone will power now, when the screen starts a cycle of going to a BLACK screen, release ONLY the POWER button.
9. When you see the download icon release the volume buttons,
10. Odin back to stock by putting the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area.
Afaik the three button combo is for
Recovery mode. Follow the above directions up to the power button part. While holding both volume buttons, it should go directly into download mode when the usb us plugged in
Try removing all drivers then reinstall if xp doesn't pick it up
Beware of angry gingerbread man
power off phone
pull out battery
turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers
Install samsung kies mini. It gives you the correct drivers. I once installed those and it messed it up. So install kies mini.
