Someone I work with is considering rooting his Evo. I have given him my reasons why I am glad I rooted my Aria. I'm curious what others have gained from their rooted devices. Here's mine, not in any particular order.
Upgrade to FroYo using Liberated (FR007)
UOT Kitchen mods of GUI
Nandroid backups - able to repair failed experiments in UOT
Sideloading - stock Aria ROM didn't allow it
Apps to SD - Aria has small internal memory
The dozens of apps that make management easier (Quick Boot, CacheMate)
My most favorite one - adb and the removal of bloatware.
His EVO doesn't have the same limits that my Aria had out of the box, so some of these won't apply to him. Give me more ideas why he won't regret it.
no offense, but prepared to get flamed for putting this in the dev section, should prob be in the general section.
heres one, now he will have a bunch of question, and he can come gere and someone can rudely tell them to search, and when he does search he gets post of other people telling a OP to search

A) make posts in the right sections of this forum

u win the prize my man..... free tethering ftw! also nice to uc/oc on the fly with different kernals
My #1 reason for rooting wasn't to become a flashoholic. I wanted the one feature sprint took off the phone which was the ability to easily lock the phone on roam. I held off rooting till I saw Mr Gregg had put the roam control app on the market.
My wife and I both run stock versions of sense and are happy with the phones. Maybe it's just because I'm an old dude compared to most EVO owners. I do like reading the forum a lot though, lol.
Hotspot
Backup Apps with Titanium Backup (Good for when you get a new phone and restoring settings)
Nandroid Backups/Swapping to different roms
Ability to run CM and no sense
No Ads
If you have to ask why you should root it, then don't. It's risky, it voids your warranty, leads to other time consuming activities, you lose sleep (going to bed at 3, up at 6:30), stressful waiting (screen lockups, rude replies to noob questions, terminology). I did it because computers are a hobby and I don't like Sense.
But the bottom line is the (unrooted) HTC Evo (out of the box) is an amazing device and unless you have to provide an AP for others (which I don't AP's are everywhere these days). Sprint apps aren't that bothersome and overclocking my Evo didn't get my texts or email faster. (jk, I knew it wouldn't) or need a hand-held UNIX platform--there's no need to ever root.
I'm glad I did it though, but I miss my life. lol
I have two top reasons Im glad I rooted my Evo
1.) Myn's Roms particularly RLS 4 (Im in love with this Rom and Kernel)
2.) Also for once in my life I didnt just jump into something , I read everything about rooting , understood the process and was able to reverse it if I needed to .
if he is looking for reasons to root then he isnt going to take advantage of most of what rooting has to offer. for him, free thethering, removal of bloatware, and no adds. if he gets into it then cyanogen, titanium backup, flashing stuff like fonts.
i rooted my girls phone so i can back all of her stuff up keep her phone free of bloatware and i flashed a custom font for her. she doesnt notice any difference but if anything happens like an update messing up or something i can fix everything easier because she is rooted.
The 3 big ones for me:
1. Battery life. Most roms out there are more efficient than stock with battery life.
2. Nandroid.
3. Ability to install/remove any app.

When I see read about some of the developers saying things like, "I'll get back to it after class" or something to that effect, I feel old too. So out of curiosity, what is an "old dude" to you?

In addition to the many reasons already cited, I've always tinkered and tweaked everything I've owned (i.e., computers, cars, etc.) This just continues that trend.

I have only seen one kernel.. the one posted here, works nice but are we going to start seeing more?
Same with ROMs.. there's captains, the cyanogen 5 port, which is buggy and then ozzy's. Maybe another one or two that I missed.. I was just wondering if were going to see a lot more start coming in the future? Or are we losing developers to the MOTO x? :/
I know were getting cyanogen 6 in the near future support too
And I'm not saying it has to be froyo.. just an awesome Rom, something new!
Droid Incredible Rooted!
it's still a bit soon.
what exactly are you looking for in a custom kernel? Now that we can flash a custom kernel, really the top things in my opinion are wifi-tether, VPN, undervolt/under/over clock, and thats about it...the rest of kernel pretty much works fine as is.
That's what I keep saying.. I just see the evo forum and they have a ton of stuff and hacks! Lol
Droid Incredible Rooted!
the phone had 3 roms and a kernel up the day it was rooted, and thats not impressive? i think people are forgetting the amount of work it takes to tailor an entire OS to a phone....
I know people are going to reply and say, give it time, root's still hard to come by and the reflash tool, just came out. But unfortunately, I'm starting to wonder the same as you, that the incredible is being passed over in favor of the motorola droid X. Which is a shame, cause I think the incredible's a great phone. Hope it wasn't wrong place wrong time for it, cause I'd love to see a 2.2 cyanogen 6 ROM for it...

you cant compare the evo's progression to incredibles. the evo's software was released before the phone was, hence its root being achieved before anyone even had the phone, and the result in more roms and dev for the phone..
Well, I think a few of the problems that we have are that first, the nand is not completely unlocked which is why some haven't started doing a lot of work yet, and second, while there are some excellent devs working and providing support for the Incredible, many devs are shying away from it because it is a CDMA phone and cannot be unlocked quite like a GSM phone. I love Verizon's service but I sure do miss the days of swapping my sim card between several phones.
It's coming though, I'm sure we'll see lots of roms eventually (but the important question is how many will be different).

No its been confirmed that were getting cyanogen mod 6 and future releases. So nothing to worry there. Which is probably the best Rom around, but I'd love to see others. That's all. I just hope we don't lose them to the MOTO X which would be ashame.

Seriously. Give it time its been 1 week.
Things take time - remember of course that there's a smaller userbase (devs included) for the DI than other phones and that the phone's only been rooted a week.
The way I look at it - in a week's time, I've gotten root, I've had a custom recovery, a nandroid backup, wireless tethering, 802.11n networking and an undervoltage kernel to improve battery life. I call that one pretty sweet week
Thread cleaned up. Please keep it civilized.
Probobly because half the people on this forum cant even get root because of finicky SD Cards not allowing the various methods to work
What about themes ? We need more Roms and themes please !

THIS
TBH I am coming from the Hero (waiting...so impatiently for the incredible) and of all the roms, I ended up getting back to the basic root as above here.
rom chasing...
I had a G-1 Dream and the devs were churning out roms right and left. I do remember it starting very slowly at first and 1 or 2 devs. Hero and a couple others. and then everybody and his brother got on board. Same with the ppc apache. Off we went chasing the latest revision of our favorite devs build. It will happen here as well. It seems slow, but we are at the very forefront and on a platform that is a bit more difficult than the dream. Give it time and give yourself some patience. And definatly give these guys your support as they start to churn out a new batch of software. Don't give them a bunch of winy impatient user base that they would end up tiring of developing for and end up feeling that we are ungrateful. Hell I cant even root mine yet and kinda gave up for awhile until an easier, surer way is found and the nand thing is solved. And wow is it so much easier to come in and read the posts and not get so caught up into the hype and the sometimes disappointment involved with this whole process. I chased roms through a few platforms and finally learned to relax and let it happen. What a difference it is from chasing them down...
I've watched countless videos on Youtube and researched them both on google, but I just can't seem to come to a decision on which is better.
The Vibrant has native android which runs smooth AND records videos in 720p which is a really nice bonus, but the HD2 just has this massive screen which just looks like it kicks *** BUT can also run Android (with some bugs apparently). When it comes to battery life, which is better? My day is filled with heavy texting and the occasional web browsing but not really emails or networking since I hate Facebook and all that.
Any help here?
I've had both and Vibrant hands down. Not even a contest honestly. The only thing the HD2 has over the Vibrant is a little larger screen and even then the Vibrant is a better screen.
Here you go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745201&highlight=Vibrant+hd2
we're getting too many of the threads....
if you look at them side by side and open the same apps etc, you will see that the hd2 is garbage.
Vibrant indeed, was at the T-Mo store and mom was considering it for some bizarre reason, the T-Mo rep told her to not consider it, on top of all the obvious reasons posted in many threads, the device itself seems to be very buggy and the rep said most people have problems with the device
If you can afford a Lexus why buy a Hyuandai that looks like one? Go with the vibrant, my hd2 had freezing issues, slow browser and the app store reminded me of my palm treo 650, non existant!
I perfer the screen size and ergonomics of the vibrant, on a hardware note, and touch sensitive buttons means no dirt getting into the phone.
Did I miss anything?
Oh night mode, swype, and hummingbird ftw!
Sent from the best phone from TMO... Vibrant
The only thing going for it would be the price, depending on how disgusted the person is with the HD2 you can get one mint in the low $200's
Thanks guys, I realize this is an overdone topic but I really appreicate the responses.
I think I'm set on the vibrant since it has way better features with the exception of flash and a bigger screen.
I really appreciate it guys, but just one more thing, there IS a way to unlock this phone to get free apps and such right? >_>

If your talking about getting paid apps for free then you're not going to get any help here. Its called warez and very frowned upon here. Besides most apps in the market are free or have a lite version. And the paid ones only cost a few dollars so its not even worth it to pirate them.

Getting apps for free really does this community a dis-service. app developers are less likely to produce the higher end games and support for a system that is flawed, at least for now. Soon we will see emailed auth. Codes for every paid app., but will hopefully see those apps that are truly worth paying for.

Haven't used the HD2 but I'm in love with my Vibrant and it seems like a has quite a bigger fan base going.

I don't mind paying for applications, but paying for an app that let's you use nice themes with different icons (on the G1 anyways) always seemed downright stupid to me. You're right though, it doesn't justify stealing them in the first place because some devs do deserve the money.
I had HD2 and i wasnt happy with it. It crashed the second day and apps were simply limited and useless. The OS wasnt bad but it wasnt good either. After i installed android i was more pleased but not for long when it kept crashing (bcs obviously is not perfect yet) Now that i have Vibrant i fell in love from out of the box. Everything is neat (especially when froyo 2.2 comes out) and so far havent frozen once. Battery never seemed like a problem to me, and i DO text a lot. Usually keep brightness down since the screen is beautiful as it is and less light reflect. Every phone have its own problems and HD2 have too many.
I have both..I like the led flash and larger screen of the hd2 but the color and pop of the vibrant is much better...I like my Vibrant alot more.....

Doubt it man, the hd2's lost value quicker than a...I actually don't have an analogy to go with that. Anyways they're pretty dirt cheap on craigslist but good luck selling them nonetheless. And in regards to this thread's topic, I suggest getting the vibrant and buying a cheap led keychain if flash is really important to you. Although I don't suggest trying to zoom in on your photos in android's default gallery app. Just trust me, it's not pretty.
And do try to search the forum next time you have a question. It's kind of getting annoying seeing these identical threads popping up every time I come to xda.

i also have both.
you can now run android on the hd2 on top of the native windows OS via dual-boot. so far most of the builds are close to being 100 pct stable. right now, i'm running froyo with htc sense on my hd2 and getting respectable quadrant scores up to 1500. these builds also come rooted and with overclocked kernels. just some thing for you to think about if you're thinking about getting an hd2. i primarily use my hd2 for work and my vibrant as my daily driver.
You as in me. Me as in us. Us as in everyone here.
In my time here I've begun to notice a trend we all tend to follow. We as a community of Evo 4G owners are already committed to the bleeding edge. By contributing additional time and effort to rooting, romming, and pushing our hardware, we gleefully fling ourselves over that bleeding edge into the dark abyss below.
I've reformatted and wiped my phone completely somewhere north of 200 times. Now I'm to the point where I just want something that works while I focus on other projects. In an effort to find the Holy Grail of "perfect" implementations, I've noticed that it is my own finagling with the distributions that causes instability and poor battery life.
The devs are pretty clear about what the goals of their distributions are, what you can expect, and what happens if you don't read directions. If a rom isn't living up to YOUR expectations, then either you should take inventory of what you expect from a voluntary effort or take up the mantle of cooking your own.
So next time you complain that you are on an AOSP that can't use Sense widgets, a ROM that doesn't have HDMI (and clearly states it in prior to installation) for the 1% of people who think their phone is a VCR, or doesn't get the same battery life as a nuclear submarine; you might want to take these facts into consideration.
Honestly, I know this rant is wasted on those that complain in the rom threads over and over and over again. They've already demonstrated they can't read anyway.
Be kind to our Devs. The last thing any of us needs is them to feel suffocated by our insane demands and to run off screaming into the night. Without them, you'd still all be stuck on an unrooted phone pushing 30 frames per second and getting 14 minutes of talk time before it exploded in your hands.
Well said!
well said indeed.
though i think some feedback is always need as it helps the devs in some ways. I to have noticed a lot of people have moved from feedback to demands. (the damage control rom is a good example of this. they havent put an update out in while. All yuo see when your ead the thread now is hey why isnt there an update we need an update. but when these people are asked what they think needs fixed or what they need in the update ... most just cant tell you. I'm not saying damage control is perfect as is because it isnt. there are new tweaks i am sure they could put in to adjust this or that a little. I just think it is funny how so many are demanding an update for an updates sake in that instance and because there hasnt been one refer to the rom as being dead.)
seems like a lot dont read the op for the rom either and complain. anther example is in evio 1.2 calk switched the home and back buttons function purposely. it says he did in the op and says he feels it works better and provides a zip to revert that change if you dont like it. still tons of posts of people complaining and demanding a fix yet ... its already done and explained its a feature.
sorry thought i would join your rant lol.
Until someone makes a rom with the gbs and the wifis, I reserve the right to complain like a little school girl whose shoes are too tight.

also please remember that its a phone
oh it's always nice to get that rom that "works". but sometimes it's fun to try out a new feature. if you are a constant flasher, time reinstalling is the price you pay. if a person finds themselves constantly flashing, they should make sure they use backup programs to make the process take less time. there are also OTA rom updates now, which were hinted at on WM, but since it's current iteration (6.5.x) is about to be "legacy" soon, i don't think it was made a reality. the demands vs. request thing can get annoying though. maybe an update to the forum rules where such behavior and be reported might be an option. lastly, yes, we understand that some of you paid good money for your phone and don't have a ton of cash, but there are people doing stuff for free that they could keep to themselves. skip a lunch out or a combo meal ONE time, and donate that to someone whose roms you use on a regular basis or a really cool app. if you wrap your head around it, it is reciprocation for the unselfish act these devs are doing.
This thread-full-of-win calls for a toast, a toast with awesome sauce

Good post though. I agree with you. I'm still very new to Android, but I think some people take these things way too far.
I appreciate all of those who put so much time into helping others here, whether they be finding new root exploits, cooking roms, putting together new kernels, or designing new themes, apps, boot animations, etc.
The thing those people need to keep in mind is that the devs aren't doing it for a paycheck. They're doing it because they enjoy it. They just happen to be nice enough to share, so we can enjoy it too.

I have made the switch from an ATT tilt (old i know) to the Epic. My gf got one too. I actually ordered them through samsclub.com for $199 with free ship (4 days) and free activation plus no tax! I have been on this forum for about 2 weeks checking into this phone and all that you guys have to offer. So I am pretty much brand new to the Android community so here is my Hello!
My main question is what does everyone recommend I should install on our phones? I understand the Boss Rom has some of the things I want (tether, clean the stock crap out, etc) but are there any individual programs out that would help the phone perform better or you guys like (practical/ useful)? I will probably troll the market and see what I like but I know there are good ones I probably wont find. Thanks to all of the developers who are on here spending their time and money to help out the community (us)!!
Let me know what you guys think and Thanks in advance!

I also have 2 Epics. First off, I had an HTC Hero before I got the EPIC and did run and try a few custom roms. Each has thier advantages and disadvantages. Some are buggy some use over clocked kernals, undervolt etc... However that was a 500mhz phone. So you needed to do that to squeeze more performance out it if.
I also had Wifi tether.
---
My Epic has sprint hotspot, for me it works out of the box. I never even had to suscribe to it. However if you install ROOT you can run other Tether apps without needing a custom rom, which at this time are really lacking still.
Once Froyo hits, the phone will be even more snappy.
I recommend a few apps,
ROOT,custom recovery so you can do full nandroid backups/restore.
Linda or Astro File manager-- So you can easily side load applications and browse the contents of your SDCard.
Handicent Messenger-- better in my opnion than the built in one, wife likes to change fonts and stuff.
Google Maps and navigation update. (Use Sprint one too, its also good)
Apppbrain- Alterative to android market. Some diffrent things pop up there
Bluff My Call- Spoof your phone number to unsuspecting friends.
All game console emulators. PSX4Droid,Nesoid,Gensoid,GBoid,Snesoid,Gameboid,Gearoid etc...
Shazam-- Put your phone next to the radio and it will Tag the song so you can download it later.
Pandora, Internet Radio-- Customizable stations
Tunein Radio-- Listen to local stations live over your carrier.
Nook- Ebook reader
Kindle- Ebook Reader
Car Matey- Park your car and start the App. It will tag your location and guide you back to your car via compass and gps. Very good for the outings where parking lots are huge.
NOVA- FPS for android -- Download from Gamehouse
Sandstorm modern warfare- FPS for android- Download from Gamehouse
Toon warz- FPS for android- Market
Homerun Battle 3d-- Fun Baseball game, Hit the ball-- use tilt
Angry Birds-- Same as IPhone version
Doodle Jump-- NOT THE SAME- Dont buy-- Poor development (thought Id mention it)
Thats a start at least.
Well...i cant give you any specifics for the epic cuz i dont have one, but rooted phones across android usually have wi-fi tether and a terminal emulator
Wi-fi tether is something you should get to avoid paying the $30 a month sprint charges for the same feature and a terminal emulator is something you should have so that you can run certain commands without needing a computer
You can just type "root" in the marketplace and see what pops up and what catches your interest ^_^

What have you done since you've gotten root access?
I rooted, and the only thing I have done is remove apps I don't want.
Same here, removed apps for now.
I look forward to a good custom ROM in the future as there are some aspects of the MT4G Sense I would rather not have.

What have you done since you've gotten root access? A lot of people have been complaining about the mt4g/g2 and wanting to return it since they couldn't get root. I want to know what you have done since you've rooted that made it so life or death.

All about the custom roms and kernels. Root was the prerequisite. Now that we have it developers can start working on the real stuff, as in the "life or death" stuff everyone is so excited about. I'll take it you're new to android/rooting? Wait and see, great things to come

no not at all actually :/ i got addicted back with the G1 and have had a list of android phones since then... i lost my nexus one the other day so im just as excited as anyone else... i just wanted to see if anyones been playing with anything good or just makin minor tweaks
Not only removing stock apps. It helps u bring a sense of originality & style to ur device with the full customation ability that Root access provides. In addition to that, making your device run smoother & faster & not being an eager slave to the creators of the smartphone world. In easier terms, not always waiting for the things u anticipate for that ur phone is already suppose to do. I was a sceptic at first, but once u decide to take that turn towards rooting u will be very satisfied.

Just to be clear I'm not asking if I should root my phone and why... I just wanted to see what the first things people did when they got root...

I see. maybe it was the "life or death" remark that got people confused?
your right i meant it as a 2 part question but the way i typed it made it sound like one...
are your phones running different with the bloatware off?
I uninstalled bloatware (a must) and installed mobile defense as a system app (also a must)

is it making a difference? normally the bloatware weighs down the boot time but thats not an issue here....
im hoping we can overclock are mt4g like the g2 can. 1.6ghz would be nice if it was stable. so im gonna wait to root my phone till overclocking comes to this phone.

I'm as bad a spec geek as the next, but I've yet to find any reason to OC over 1ghz on any recent phone I've had.
I would only OC when I was trying to pull the best benchmark and then back to 1ghz for me on my Evo...
Rooting
I wasn't aware that there was a root for this phone so quickly. Where is it located so that I can remove all this crap that I will never ever want to use. Thanks. Also What is mobile defense.
So far the only thing I've really done with root was change the Lock/Unlock sounds. I'm a huge Metal Gear Solid fan so now whenever I lock or unlock the phone I hear the codec open or close sound.
whats the easiest way to remove said bloatware again? titanium?
I've removed bloatware and the rosie.apk. Also, I'm waiting until u can actually underclock my processor.

This information must be shared, Snake!
I'm guessing Root Explorer would do the trick? I've never looked into doing that before. Mind sharing the location and/or the sound?
Anyway, removed bloat, used Setcpu, gave Juice Defender root access. And @flopie, mobile defense is an app that can track your phone if you ever lose it. Shows the gps location on a map at their web page. You can remotely lock it down or wipe the phone and sd card if you have to.
