I have made the switch from an ATT tilt (old i know) to the Epic. My gf got one too. I actually ordered them through samsclub.com for $199 with free ship (4 days) and free activation plus no tax! I have been on this forum for about 2 weeks checking into this phone and all that you guys have to offer. So I am pretty much brand new to the Android community so here is my Hello!
My main question is what does everyone recommend I should install on our phones? I understand the Boss Rom has some of the things I want (tether, clean the stock crap out, etc) but are there any individual programs out that would help the phone perform better or you guys like (practical/ useful)? I will probably troll the market and see what I like but I know there are good ones I probably wont find. Thanks to all of the developers who are on here spending their time and money to help out the community (us)!!
Let me know what you guys think and Thanks in advance!

I also have 2 Epics. First off, I had an HTC Hero before I got the EPIC and did run and try a few custom roms. Each has thier advantages and disadvantages. Some are buggy some use over clocked kernals, undervolt etc... However that was a 500mhz phone. So you needed to do that to squeeze more performance out it if.
I also had Wifi tether.
---
My Epic has sprint hotspot, for me it works out of the box. I never even had to suscribe to it. However if you install ROOT you can run other Tether apps without needing a custom rom, which at this time are really lacking still.
Once Froyo hits, the phone will be even more snappy.
I recommend a few apps,
ROOT,custom recovery so you can do full nandroid backups/restore.
Linda or Astro File manager-- So you can easily side load applications and browse the contents of your SDCard.
Handicent Messenger-- better in my opnion than the built in one, wife likes to change fonts and stuff.
Google Maps and navigation update. (Use Sprint one too, its also good)
Apppbrain- Alterative to android market. Some diffrent things pop up there
Bluff My Call- Spoof your phone number to unsuspecting friends.
All game console emulators. PSX4Droid,Nesoid,Gensoid,GBoid,Snesoid,Gameboid,Gearoid etc...
Shazam-- Put your phone next to the radio and it will Tag the song so you can download it later.
Pandora, Internet Radio-- Customizable stations
Tunein Radio-- Listen to local stations live over your carrier.
Nook- Ebook reader
Kindle- Ebook Reader
Car Matey- Park your car and start the App. It will tag your location and guide you back to your car via compass and gps. Very good for the outings where parking lots are huge.
NOVA- FPS for android -- Download from Gamehouse
Sandstorm modern warfare- FPS for android- Download from Gamehouse
Toon warz- FPS for android- Market
Homerun Battle 3d-- Fun Baseball game, Hit the ball-- use tilt
Angry Birds-- Same as IPhone version
Doodle Jump-- NOT THE SAME- Dont buy-- Poor development (thought Id mention it)
Thats a start at least.
Well...i cant give you any specifics for the epic cuz i dont have one, but rooted phones across android usually have wi-fi tether and a terminal emulator
Wi-fi tether is something you should get to avoid paying the $30 a month sprint charges for the same feature and a terminal emulator is something you should have so that you can run certain commands without needing a computer
You can just type "root" in the marketplace and see what pops up and what catches your interest ^_^

for testing purposes only. If you like it, Please purchase the program to support the author.
[PP: link deleted]
So let me get this straight. You bought the program for $22, like I did, and are now posting it here? And since you're posting it on this BB, it uploaded it to xda-developers servers, which means xda-developers are now hosting pirated software? Not something a webmaster wants to find on his site in this day and age.
Doesn't quite sound like a smart idea, now does it?
We may be hackers here, but not pirates!
I think he forgot to mention that he posted it for testing purposes only and that if the person likes it they will purchase the program themselves so enabling the author to carry on programming and feeding his family from his efforts.
tho i dont support piracy, i must admit, programs are very expensive now days! i mean $22 for this?
i got several games for $6 - $15. and quite good ones too!
why dont they keep prices low? its not like they're making state of the art programs! most are like a pig&poke.
the ONE program i refuse to pay full price for is the iastyle caller id, and that is because they give v2.0 for free , yet they charge $16 for v1.0
thats not right. atleast drop the price!
Can't get it to work anyway :?
think it is a kind of a bait. the file isnt working. think it is a fake.
I fixed it...
it seems very strange that when upload the programs to this server...It is modified automatically.
so I just put the file in my server, it is ok now.
if you like it, please do purchase it to support the author.
Granted the trial version only supports 6 calls, but really - how many of us really go out and purchase things we downloaded full-version for free unless we have an ultra-guilty conscience.
Oh, and to get it working I found you need to put nothing in for country code (even though it complains). Most of my contacts are formatted (xxx) xxx-xxxx not +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx like the program seems to expect.

You post in this thread and ask why prices are high?
If piracy grows prices will grow too... It's a simple calculation:
Product price = Development costs / (estimated) number of purchases

Well Im not an economist but I know the converse is also true. High cost of softwares (compared to what is reasonable for the usefulness of a particular software) actually drives piracy. $22 or about 1/10 of the cost of Windows XP is too much for this particular software. I will be glad to get a pirated copy!!!!!!! But if this is say $5. I will be ashamed to steal it.
Give it a try and reduce the price of this software and see if turnover will not increase.
NB: The software is good, though!
Hello again,
since there are not many devices on market (compared to windows XP machines) the price must be like $80 per copy ...
But I noticed one simple fact now. Most people of you don't want software for mobile devices...
So I think about a very simple thing. I will stop making software for mobile devices and wait until their are MANY users and I can provide cheaper versions.
Maik
Hi
Better stop this discussion as it is.
I already bought this product. It is good. Compared to CallerFirewall (you'll find it on this site, somewhere), it offers the possibility of having different profiles (but the other program is free).
One thing I noticed though, is that in order to work, this program must be kept running minimized. So if you have a task manager that actually closes programs when you press the X button, you should not use it. There should be an option to keep it running on the command bar, or present it as a today plug-in.
Hello,
the closing by taskmanagers will be fixed by the upcoming update (I think we will release it this week).
Maik
For the people that use SPB PocketPlus, this task manager contains a feature to add programs to an "ignore" list. You could add smartfilter.exe ... works like a charm.
I think I remember that you posted a screenshot of several programms running on a Universal, each in individual windows, like on a real desktop. Now I can't find that post anymore. Did I just dream it, or are you really working on that? Is you are, what the status? Is anything available for testing yet?
Rapax!
Yes, you dreamed it. I was walking back home yesterday and was worrying that I'm dreaming in c++. I started thinking that this must be the Matrix or something - you know that feeling when you're dreaming along, driving your Bentley GT Coupe

and suddenly wake up to the reality of Buzz's car:
Well I was having that feeling - did I really write VJSihaya or just dream it? I'm so often delirious from a lack of sleep, I'm sure I'm just going to wake up with a buggy version of VJPong or something instead
The app is called VJSihaya. As the name implies (read the thread for why it's called what it is), it's a long term ambition rather than anything immediate. The windowing system itself is pretty much done, just tweaking and playing with new skins. Although I've promised not to write further code on it until I've bugfixed some old apps, yesterday on a whim I incorporated Today plugins, so you can have windowed Today items (eg a copy of weather panel to open and close as required, a floating Calendar plugin etc) which will turn into hopefully a Today replacement. New screenshots soon.
The next stage is a full desktop replacement (easy! I write those for breakfast ) Once the rough code is in place and functional, I'll then refine to provide an open skin support etc. But this all in a galaxy far far away yet. Three guys are playing with the windowing system preview to get some feedback which will be incorporated.
VJSihaya might just not happen at all, there's a lot of code that I think is beyond me, and it'll be a learning experience. But, who knows. I hope I can get it out, because I think it looks cool, even if it's ultimately useless. And we wouldn't have $1000 phones if we didn't want to show off, eh

LOL @ V
excellent!
You need to get some sleep vijay!
Awesome!
It looks grand. I see you mentioned that you currently don't need any testers, so I won't pester you about that. But I do hope that someday you'll release a finished (or even just fairly finished) version. My Boss has a pretty little Sharp Zaurus, and likes showing of with his pdaXrom --> http://www.pdaxrom.org/screenshots.php?menuid=2. With VJSihaya, I'd have a mighty weapon in the showing off contest (And your absolutely right that it's just for showing off, but thats half the fun, isn't it?)
Hey Vijay
How do you know this is not a looooooo  oooooong dream-?????
and your not really this crazy but have a sane simple life with no stresses and the worlds a peace full place-
dam i think i need some sleep!
lol
V
Hey VJ.
Really nice work....appreciated by your greeeeeeeeeeeat effort on making our Universal running amazingly.
However, I do think you should get more rest..you know, stress ain't no good
Good Luck
Cheers
Julius
Yeh, I'm still awake on 10 hours sleep in 3 days.
I'm starting to worry... but doing some nice work on VJOkButt - thumb friendly reminders are back.
Going to finish that in a moment and then finally get some rest. Thank God it's Sunday
V
All I'll say is that VJSihaya is something I'd actually consider paying for.
BTW Vijay, you wanted a cpy of my ROM didn't you? If you want to meet up in London sometime and take a copy off my phone that's cool.
Riceburner: I've promised that I wouldn't work on VJSihaya until I finish some bug work on older apps, and I've spent the last week or so, when I've not been working at the office, doing that. New release of VJOkButt hopefully tonight. Some other stuff shortly after that.
I've spent a HUGE amount of time doing R&D on stuff you won't see immediate benefits of, but when they come, they come. I had the camera flash hack 99% done for quite a while, but one breakthrough made it happen.
I miss working on VJSihaya. I've got so many ideas for it...
Ok: Riceburner I would love to meet up. You've got a universal right? Why did I want a copy of your ROM? Can't remember, but I spent MANY horrible hours yesterday decompiling Roms for devices I've never heard of (MPX300?!) to try and work on cross compatibilty for the torch app. So I think I've got a Universal rom, but remind me why I asked for it?
Anyway, even if I don't need the ROM, I'm in Central London (near St Pauls) if anyone wants to join me for a coke, coffee, Ball and Biscuit etc.

it works now, but i dont like the idea of a web browser app... if there's enough votes, I can build a (awesome looking + fast), app store (more like a repo, but will work the same way)...
I know php, so im thinking have a web portal for devs/app-makers to upload apps to... and then have an client app as a download portal... and I can prolly make it have a metro-esque UI... i have a huge collection of apps, but most of them are paid, so unless lets say gameloft decides to upload them to the repo and get paid through an app like this... theres no way to put those on there even :-/... if you guys want one for free apps/games... jsut comment below...
Hey, this is a great idea and could blow up in a big way for the forum users/cooks! Even if you did an app, the cooks could have you put in a section for them so you could link their ROMs and tweaks all in one handy location. Problem I see is so many people wanting it to be updated all the time and you not having the time to do it; and I doubt you would get enough donations to make this a full time job! But I do think this is a great idea, app or browser based! Looks promising so far!
my plan is to make it into an app it was just a little test only spent a few min on it last night. Just design stage at the moment.
cool... yea lemme know if u need help... ... and i still prefer the design to be something metro-esque... HD2 deserves better eye candy than the iPhone
EDIT: Oh and dont like the idea of hosting files on megaupload... I have a server with lots of space and unlimited bandwidth... so like I said... web portal for devs/companies to upload apps... and client portal on phone to download straight from the server...
I'm definitely looking forward to root and ROMs being ported to the G2. I have been using custom ROMs like Cyanogen's mod for quite some time now on my G1, and now that I am without; it has become blatantly obvious that it's the little things that transform quality products into luxury products. Thanks to everyone's work, we are watching the definition of luxury in the making. With every new technology that comes out, and every new line of code the developers and awesome community coders write we are watching the evolution of our devices progress. Can't wait to see how this great phone will fly once I get it away from stock. I'm already interested in the new things that are slowly being discovered about it. As some sit and complain that they aren't getting what they paid for, others are going on an adventure finding out whatever they can from a new product. Its like a giant puzzle that people all over the world are working together to figure out. How interesting it would be if they actually took advantage of situations like this and all the energy that follows them to create fully immersive viral advertising campaigns. I mean everyone who is following the developments of the G2 are putting so much emotion into it all. Whether it's positive or negative we are watching the community come together as a whole, and it's pretty amazing. Whether or not there really are lasting issues with the memory or other parts of the phone, I am enjoying the dynamic of our teamwork to figure it all out.
I'm right there with you bro. This phone will have crazy developer support, I can't wait to see what happens. Things can only get better especially with support from cyanogen.

I kind of agree. I'm more annoyed that rooting is the only way to get screenshot/wifi tether privileges..
If those two things were incorporated already (booooo Google & T-Mobile) I probably wouldn't root. I find android pleasantly customizable even without the theming options.
you can capture screen shots without root
i followed the instructions at this link (for the Droid) and works great
you'll need to download the SDK developers kit and the Java developers kit but they're both linked in the instructions and your phone will have to be connected to your PC, but once you've done the download, you'll end up with a shortcut icon on your desktop taking you straight to the screen capture function screen

Obviously I meant without using a computer and having to use the SDK. That's a lot more hassle than it should be.
once we have tablets with USB we should be able to put sdk on them(hopefully) and play with our toys using our other toys

It's actually all T-Mobile's fault, not Google's. T-Mobile would never let its users have that feature for free.

WEll I was blaming Google for the Screen Shot limitation... but yeah.
Hey guys,
I picked up a Galaxy S2 the other day with emulation in mind because of the huge screen, the power and the weight of the device. I got the phone, rooted it, installed the latest MIUI rom 1.7.8 which is fabulous apart from a few kinks. The phone is really responsive and fast and it was an awesome buy. After playing around with it a bit, i tried out some emulators. I found that games which don't require any reactions were playable on the device, and others which needed fast action were just really tough to play, megaman, sonic and mario for example. I bet your thinking "Mario? Action? lol!" well i mean action as in its slightly fast paced, you need to have 100% accuracy when playing the game for it to be effective and efficient on the device, which for me it was not i kept missing buttons and stuff, more importantly my hand covered the whole of mario so i couldn't see him which was a large downside.
So i decided to get the Wiimote working on the device, which is why in the end i rooted the device and installed MIUI because luckily the bluetooth stack for the rom supports the wiimote which is great. And like all the previous phones i had (Nexus One, Desire, iPhone 4) all have Wiimote support but that is no good for on the go playing, and tbh its only good when you have a stand for the phone and a good chair where you can watch the device while playing using the wiimote over bluetooth.
This in my eyes was not practical enough for playing comfortably, so i looked into something else, and discovered these:

At first glance you think "Thats clever!" and it is clever it gives a solution to having to hold the phone and the wiimote to play. But not being offensive to the creator/designer or anything but they aren't exactly pretty. I tried to make something too but it was a complete fail, it wasn't secure, it looked horrible and it wasn't detachable, so i came up with something better. I was trying to think of a material which was both durable, secure, strong and customisable enough to build a practical solution. Then it hit me: lego.
I present to you, the Galaxy S2 Wiimote Gaming Holder! It's made 100% out of lego (the structure, that is) and connects securely to to wiimote and the phone. The video will tell more.
Here is the link to the full gallery of pictures on my Dropbox account. Theres a total of 33 images to look through.
I hope you guys like this, I can imagine that lots of people would want one of these hehe. If you want one then post and we can sort something out. Theres a few reasons I posted this because I thought you guys would find this interesting and that this can be adapted for other phones as the bass structure is universal to any Wiimote. So there you go. Post comments, suggestions, views and ratings etc i'm eager for feedback
Haha! Classic!
Added the youtube video
how did you manage to pair the wiimote to the galaxy s2? everywhere i look, it says that it doesn't work.

Thats what I thought until i tried MIUI rom. It won't work on the stock roms or other roms based off the stock (thats an educated guess) as the bluetooth stack won't support it. But MIUI does and also CyanogenMOD when the nighties and final get released for this device.
I think the amazing thing here isn't your holder but that you found a way to get the Samsung Galaxy S II working with a Wiimote (no offence to your holder).
I'll have to put a new ROM on my phone so I can use the Classic Controller and the SNES Classic Controller .
Cool man,,,so does this work with all the games?? u know like gameloft's and other games??
I don't think so. But emulators usually allow to map hardware butons so I will be happy just with them
Technically it works with anything that can map hardware buttons, to my knowledge anyway.
have you seen this? hackaday.com/2010/07/29/super-simple-gaming-controller-for-android-or-iphone
it´s already done!
I've never seen that before, but it looks pretty sweet xD. I still prefer mine though. Lego is probably cheaper and much more detachable, and smaller. Nice find though ;p
