Hey guys,
I picked up a Galaxy S2 the other day with emulation in mind because of the huge screen, the power and the weight of the device. I got the phone, rooted it, installed the latest MIUI rom 1.7.8 which is fabulous apart from a few kinks. The phone is really responsive and fast and it was an awesome buy. After playing around with it a bit, i tried out some emulators. I found that games which don't require any reactions were playable on the device, and others which needed fast action were just really tough to play, megaman, sonic and mario for example. I bet your thinking "Mario? Action? lol!" well i mean action as in its slightly fast paced, you need to have 100% accuracy when playing the game for it to be effective and efficient on the device, which for me it was not i kept missing buttons and stuff, more importantly my hand covered the whole of mario so i couldn't see him which was a large downside.
So i decided to get the Wiimote working on the device, which is why in the end i rooted the device and installed MIUI because luckily the bluetooth stack for the rom supports the wiimote which is great. And like all the previous phones i had (Nexus One, Desire, iPhone 4) all have Wiimote support but that is no good for on the go playing, and tbh its only good when you have a stand for the phone and a good chair where you can watch the device while playing using the wiimote over bluetooth.
This in my eyes was not practical enough for playing comfortably, so i looked into something else, and discovered these:

At first glance you think "Thats clever!" and it is clever it gives a solution to having to hold the phone and the wiimote to play. But not being offensive to the creator/designer or anything but they aren't exactly pretty. I tried to make something too but it was a complete fail, it wasn't secure, it looked horrible and it wasn't detachable, so i came up with something better. I was trying to think of a material which was both durable, secure, strong and customisable enough to build a practical solution. Then it hit me: lego.
I present to you, the Galaxy S2 Wiimote Gaming Holder! It's made 100% out of lego (the structure, that is) and connects securely to to wiimote and the phone. The video will tell more.
Here is the link to the full gallery of pictures on my Dropbox account. Theres a total of 33 images to look through.
I hope you guys like this, I can imagine that lots of people would want one of these hehe. If you want one then post and we can sort something out. Theres a few reasons I posted this because I thought you guys would find this interesting and that this can be adapted for other phones as the bass structure is universal to any Wiimote. So there you go. Post comments, suggestions, views and ratings etc i'm eager for feedback
Haha! Classic!
Added the youtube video
how did you manage to pair the wiimote to the galaxy s2? everywhere i look, it says that it doesn't work.

Thats what I thought until i tried MIUI rom. It won't work on the stock roms or other roms based off the stock (thats an educated guess) as the bluetooth stack won't support it. But MIUI does and also CyanogenMOD when the nighties and final get released for this device.
I think the amazing thing here isn't your holder but that you found a way to get the Samsung Galaxy S II working with a Wiimote (no offence to your holder).
I'll have to put a new ROM on my phone so I can use the Classic Controller and the SNES Classic Controller .
Cool man,,,so does this work with all the games?? u know like gameloft's and other games??
I don't think so. But emulators usually allow to map hardware butons so I will be happy just with them
Technically it works with anything that can map hardware buttons, to my knowledge anyway.
have you seen this? hackaday.com/2010/07/29/super-simple-gaming-controller-for-android-or-iphone
it´s already done!
I've never seen that before, but it looks pretty sweet xD. I still prefer mine though. Lego is probably cheaper and much more detachable, and smaller. Nice find though ;p

i think the question is always posed but .. i want to know ... what program you use to play with your wiimote ? many programs on the market say that "newer samsung like SGS or SGS2 don"t work with wiimote"...
thanks !

I think I remember that you posted a screenshot of several programms running on a Universal, each in individual windows, like on a real desktop. Now I can't find that post anymore. Did I just dream it, or are you really working on that? Is you are, what the status? Is anything available for testing yet?
Rapax!
Yes, you dreamed it. I was walking back home yesterday and was worrying that I'm dreaming in c++. I started thinking that this must be the Matrix or something - you know that feeling when you're dreaming along, driving your Bentley GT Coupe

and suddenly wake up to the reality of Buzz's car:
Well I was having that feeling - did I really write VJSihaya or just dream it? I'm so often delirious from a lack of sleep, I'm sure I'm just going to wake up with a buggy version of VJPong or something instead
The app is called VJSihaya. As the name implies (read the thread for why it's called what it is), it's a long term ambition rather than anything immediate. The windowing system itself is pretty much done, just tweaking and playing with new skins. Although I've promised not to write further code on it until I've bugfixed some old apps, yesterday on a whim I incorporated Today plugins, so you can have windowed Today items (eg a copy of weather panel to open and close as required, a floating Calendar plugin etc) which will turn into hopefully a Today replacement. New screenshots soon.
The next stage is a full desktop replacement (easy! I write those for breakfast ) Once the rough code is in place and functional, I'll then refine to provide an open skin support etc. But this all in a galaxy far far away yet. Three guys are playing with the windowing system preview to get some feedback which will be incorporated.
VJSihaya might just not happen at all, there's a lot of code that I think is beyond me, and it'll be a learning experience. But, who knows. I hope I can get it out, because I think it looks cool, even if it's ultimately useless. And we wouldn't have $1000 phones if we didn't want to show off, eh
V
LOL @ V
excellent!
You need to get some sleep vijay!
Awesome!
It looks grand. I see you mentioned that you currently don't need any testers, so I won't pester you about that. But I do hope that someday you'll release a finished (or even just fairly finished) version. My Boss has a pretty little Sharp Zaurus, and likes showing of with his pdaXrom --> http://www.pdaxrom.org/screenshots.php?menuid=2. With VJSihaya, I'd have a mighty weapon in the showing off contest (And your absolutely right that it's just for showing off, but thats half the fun, isn't it?)
Hey Vijay
How do you know this is not a looooooo  oooooong dream-?????
and your not really this crazy but have a sane simple life with no stresses and the worlds a peace full place-
dam i think i need some sleep!
lol
V
Hey VJ.
Really nice work....appreciated by your greeeeeeeeeeeat effort on making our Universal running amazingly.
However, I do think you should get more rest..you know, stress ain't no good
Good Luck
Cheers
Julius
Yeh, I'm still awake on 10 hours sleep in 3 days.
I'm starting to worry... but doing some nice work on VJOkButt - thumb friendly reminders are back.
Going to finish that in a moment and then finally get some rest. Thank God it's Sunday
V
All I'll say is that VJSihaya is something I'd actually consider paying for.
BTW Vijay, you wanted a cpy of my ROM didn't you? If you want to meet up in London sometime and take a copy off my phone that's cool.
Riceburner: I've promised that I wouldn't work on VJSihaya until I finish some bug work on older apps, and I've spent the last week or so, when I've not been working at the office, doing that. New release of VJOkButt hopefully tonight. Some other stuff shortly after that.
I've spent a HUGE amount of time doing R&D on stuff you won't see immediate benefits of, but when they come, they come. I had the camera flash hack 99% done for quite a while, but one breakthrough made it happen.
I miss working on VJSihaya. I've got so many ideas for it...
Ok: Riceburner I would love to meet up. You've got a universal right? Why did I want a copy of your ROM? Can't remember, but I spent MANY horrible hours yesterday decompiling Roms for devices I've never heard of (MPX300?!) to try and work on cross compatibilty for the torch app. So I think I've got a Universal rom, but remind me why I asked for it?
Anyway, even if I don't need the ROM, I'm in Central London (near St Pauls) if anyone wants to join me for a coke, coffee, Ball and Biscuit etc.

Hey everyone. I'm working on a new launcher for my T-Mobile Dash (S620). Its in its infant stages. i have a few sketches, and 1 fleshed out concept. I'd like to get some feedback and see what y'all think. The pin-wheel above the clock would rotate to show day and night. It was inspired a bit by the layout of the xbox 360 dashboard... and every other according menu ever made (microsoft wasnt first)

love your mock up. Imo, I would see what those tabs cascading from highest on left to lowest on the right might look like. then make every one a different color- user customizable even. I really dig what you got there othrwise great work.
I don't have a dash, but that looks pretty sweet. I would use it if I did and I do have a few friends with Dashes and I would definitely let them know about this.

I have a little bit of documentation reading to do before i get started on development. I'll try to keep this thread updated for y'all. I'd love to work along side someone who knows what their doing. i can write actionscript and parse xml all day long... What will hold me up this project, is my unfamiliarity with developing software for wm6.
looks great.. hope to try it soon..
Radakast,
Looks good. Hope to see the finished article soon.
WB
Looks like the blade style like the xbox360 uses. Nice! This would be an awsome launcher for my 8525. I must commend you on taking the launcher gui in a different direction. Most people are stuck in the Diamond/Iphone theme rut and its causing a lot of repetitive results. Enough of my babbling. I definitely will be keeping an eye on the development of this launcher.
Brilliant idea! Your design is way too dark however.
Seriously one of the best home screen concepts!
Forgive my ignorance but is your device a smartphone? What program will you use to develop your screen? Having just left a smartphone (Moto Q) I was under the impression that the homescreen customization is limited except for a few programs (i.e. SBSH Facade, phoneAlarm). If there is hope for homescreen customization, i'm all for it. I am just curious how it is possible.
Hey guys. I spent a few hours working on this this weekend. thanks for everyone's replys
@Vision77
Thank you. I'm a web interface designer, and im trying to bring alittle bit of that action to the smart phone platform.
@N1c0_ds
Yes it is way to dark. I designed it in my pitch black room at 2 in the morning and it looked plenty bright. I made a demo for my phone (linked below) and i was tryign to show it off to people yesterday and had to cup my hand over it... not good! my next revision will be much lighter.
@jerkules
You are forgiven. Its written in Flash Lite (Targeted Flash Player 7 written with Actionscript 2). I can blabber on and on about the technical abilities of flash player 7, but I'll spare you. pretty much its going to work like this:
dash.exe will be written in vb or c# and will work as the glue between the phone's api and flash. it will interpret the phone's commands (ie: display that you have missed a call) and my flash api (which will be open source when im done so you can all make custom phone aps in flash...) will update the flash movie with the new information. and then wm6.1 will be told to use dash.exe instead of regular home.exe.
And now for the update.
I'm really excited for this project. yall seem to enjoy it so ive added it to my stack of things to work on.. Here is the progress i've made
And because its made in Flash. i can post a real example, not just screenshots of it.
http://www.motionharvest.com/forums/xda/dash/radadash/examples/clock_and_sliding/
I've made a small movie too. this examplifies N1c0_ds analysis that its too dark. im also not going to win any cinematic awards for my camera work.
http://www.motionharvest.com/forums/xda/dash/radadash/examples/clock_and_sliding/dashexample.wmv

reserved for possible update
Great Idea!!! i really like it, if i may just make a suggestion, maybe on the slider for texts, have some type of notification that there are unread texts. maybe something for missed calls as well? cant wait to see where this is going. Good luck!!
Great idea, love simplistic designs. If you need any help with the flash stuff I would suggest twolf, he's done really great work with flash for throttle launcher.
I've just seen this & I must say it looks really interesting. Has there been anymore progress on this recently?
To the OP - are you able to update us on progress please?
Thanks
WB
Hi
Ive been using HTC phones from the m600 on orange (uk). Ive liked them but they always had issues.. and that was always part of the 'fun' little aps to sort them.. windows was ok .. but it was windows.
My last phone was the Diamond.. and a fair few of my friends got it on my recomendation. I liked it but its shortcomings were a bit embarrasing. It really needed to use the cooked roms to get the best from it.
I fell in love with the look of the Hero the first time I saw a review.
I now have an unlocked white Hero that I use on orange.
I dropped it on day two and scratched the case.. (im an idiot) .. I now have a flexi shield so that wont happen again..
There an awful lot of posts on here with people complaining about this phone.
I think.. this is the best phone I have ever had.
I have friends with the iphone and yes its very slick and sexily fast. Its not for me.. I like multi tasking. I like HTC.
Build quality is great.. i have no problems. music playback is great.. no problems. Video playback is not good.. but I know it will improve.
The app store is great and works well.. and.. HTC SYNC works as I expected it to.
Friends look at it enviously. I like the way it works. I like co pilot for sat nav (i was an unmovable tomtom fan b4 this)
So anyway.. I know its not perfect.. what is.. It's a great phone. I have few problems with it and Im very happy with it! Nice one HTC!!!

... now HTC ...about that new update..
The main issue i had was with the lag when bringing the phone out of sleep and then scrolling side to side via the different home screens. Is that something you're experiencing?
Can you tell me where you got your shield from? If it was Ebay do you have the link?
How can you name a thread omg no problems then mention the problems in the phone namely video
Y
LOL I agree. And how can you honestly say that music playback is fine? It doesn't have an equalizer and it sounds dull.
I reasonably like my Hero, I suppose I'll learn to live with it and enjoy it somewhat. Maybe a new ROM will improve it.
Yes.. there is a little bit of lag when coming out of sleep and scrolling to the side.. I hadnt really thought about it until you mentioned it.. I would imagine it will be sorted on a firmware update.. again.. I dont see it as a problem
Video playback isnt a problem for me as Its something I dont use it for.. you tube works fine.. (I could never imagine watching a movie on a phone..) although you will find that if you encode the video for the ipod touch it will play fine..
music playback is fine through headphones (No problems).. again i dont use it for music playback normaly as I have a great big stereo for that.. (etc)
If Id wanted an entertainment device id have bought an iphone
So.. the phones great.. much better than any of the windows phones I had..
I primarily have this phone for work so my priorities may be different to yours..
I have no problems with it .. like I said.. best HTC phone Ive had
I got the shield from mobile fun
here
Thanks for the info on the shield
I have tried both Handbrake and Videora (on a mac) with ipod (2nd gen) settings. Videora comes close (the sound doesn't stutter), but even at its best, the video isn't perfect. Like everyone else is saying, the video does appear smooth, but at times it slows down a bit and then everyone walks a little faster to catch up with the timeline. It's pretty distracting and not what I would call silky smooth video.
I've yet to find a working way to convert video so it's perfectly playable on the Hero... If I have to use 15 minutes per episode converting to h264, I want it to be perfect.
Having said that, Meridian is a very good player - much better than the ablums app player. (Not faster - just better interface).
I bought the case from mobilefun for just 5,9 GBP incl porto. A lot cheaper :
But I think the seller I bought from got it out of stock, perhaps try to search ebay if u want it Its great
Btw, I've had no probs with my hero. But havent tried to play video yet
Received the case from Mobilefun today and its spot on!
Very good case and really fits well!
Amazing turnarond, ordered yesterday afternoon arrived this morning!
Does the phone fits into the original case (PO C300) with the flexishield on?
Do somebody know?
Maybe wrong thread to post...!?

OMG dude.. i am HIGHLY IMPRESSED! Would you think about starting a service, performing this task on other phones?
How difficult/time consuming is it? If we can workout the terms, i would love to have this done to my phone? Also, how likely would it be for us to raise the keys a bit? They arent very pronounced.
I couldn't do it but it defintely works fine. Glad your happy!
@Phen0m
Originally, I wanted to create a replacement keypad. Instead of having the keyboard, you'd open up the Epic and insert the new game pad.
I suppose I could continue work on that, this way I could sell the gamepad by itself to users so they could install it themselves.
But, I don't know how many people would honestly be interested in buying that.
If my effing proxy at work would cooperate I could view it. The website is blocked, but youtube isn't...funny how that works.
that is pretty cool unfortunatly i use my keypad too much and i cant find a free copy of the full droidemu, as iv no credit card to buy off the market.

I saw this on engadget. You could have waited for the gamegrip being developed for the Epic...
@Xhyperion
The game gripper isn't for me. I was looking for more of a PSPgo type of device. I'm not a fan of add-ons and stuff that I have to carry around.
For example, as soon as the Seidio battery extender comes out, I'm picking that up. I don't want to carry around additional batteries. I'm willing to deal with a little extra bulk if it means that my phone lasts twice as long.
Even though it's not for everyone, this is now the perfect device for me.

Andlabs is bringing a classic game to Android - spiced up with a twist.
Gravity Wins is based on the traditional Connect 4 (or 4 in a Row) two Player game,
only in this one your strategy has to be more advanced and thought-through, because
the board orientation changes every few rounds and then the gravity mixes up everything.

Its a fun and fast to understand game concept that lets two players compete/engage on the same device.
We also added a Game Mode where you can play alone against a computer player.

Yes we are too, we still try to figure out how to do it.
We thought about using OpenFeint's Playtime which supposed to support round based multiplayer, but it seems like this feature is not available for android yet.
We also thought about AppEngine, but we were told that we would hit the traffic limits way to fast to support online gaming.
Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas?
