I have only seen one kernel.. the one posted here, works nice but are we going to start seeing more?
Same with ROMs.. there's captains, the cyanogen 5 port, which is buggy and then ozzy's. Maybe another one or two that I missed.. I was just wondering if were going to see a lot more start coming in the future? Or are we losing developers to the MOTO x? :/
I know were getting cyanogen 6 in the near future support too
And I'm not saying it has to be froyo.. just an awesome Rom, something new!
Droid Incredible Rooted!
it's still a bit soon.
what exactly are you looking for in a custom kernel? Now that we can flash a custom kernel, really the top things in my opinion are wifi-tether, VPN, undervolt/under/over clock, and thats about it...the rest of kernel pretty much works fine as is.
That's what I keep saying.. I just see the evo forum and they have a ton of stuff and hacks! Lol
Droid Incredible Rooted!
the phone had 3 roms and a kernel up the day it was rooted, and thats not impressive? i think people are forgetting the amount of work it takes to tailor an entire OS to a phone....
I know people are going to reply and say, give it time, root's still hard to come by and the reflash tool, just came out. But unfortunately, I'm starting to wonder the same as you, that the incredible is being passed over in favor of the motorola droid X. Which is a shame, cause I think the incredible's a great phone. Hope it wasn't wrong place wrong time for it, cause I'd love to see a 2.2 cyanogen 6 ROM for it...

you cant compare the evo's progression to incredibles. the evo's software was released before the phone was, hence its root being achieved before anyone even had the phone, and the result in more roms and dev for the phone..
Well, I think a few of the problems that we have are that first, the nand is not completely unlocked which is why some haven't started doing a lot of work yet, and second, while there are some excellent devs working and providing support for the Incredible, many devs are shying away from it because it is a CDMA phone and cannot be unlocked quite like a GSM phone. I love Verizon's service but I sure do miss the days of swapping my sim card between several phones.
It's coming though, I'm sure we'll see lots of roms eventually (but the important question is how many will be different).

No its been confirmed that were getting cyanogen mod 6 and future releases. So nothing to worry there. Which is probably the best Rom around, but I'd love to see others. That's all. I just hope we don't lose them to the MOTO X which would be ashame.

Seriously. Give it time its been 1 week.
Things take time - remember of course that there's a smaller userbase (devs included) for the DI than other phones and that the phone's only been rooted a week.
The way I look at it - in a week's time, I've gotten root, I've had a custom recovery, a nandroid backup, wireless tethering, 802.11n networking and an undervoltage kernel to improve battery life. I call that one pretty sweet week
Thread cleaned up. Please keep it civilized.
Probobly because half the people on this forum cant even get root because of finicky SD Cards not allowing the various methods to work
What about themes ? We need more Roms and themes please !

All I want is cyanogen mod with a decent theme.. preferably darkedge I could care less about the rest..hopefully wiimote will work with it.

THIS
TBH I am coming from the Hero (waiting...so impatiently for the incredible) and of all the roms, I ended up getting back to the basic root as above here.
rom chasing...
I had a G-1 Dream and the devs were churning out roms right and left. I do remember it starting very slowly at first and 1 or 2 devs. Hero and a couple others. and then everybody and his brother got on board. Same with the ppc apache. Off we went chasing the latest revision of our favorite devs build. It will happen here as well. It seems slow, but we are at the very forefront and on a platform that is a bit more difficult than the dream. Give it time and give yourself some patience. And definatly give these guys your support as they start to churn out a new batch of software. Don't give them a bunch of winy impatient user base that they would end up tiring of developing for and end up feeling that we are ungrateful. Hell I cant even root mine yet and kinda gave up for awhile until an easier, surer way is found and the nand thing is solved. And wow is it so much easier to come in and read the posts and not get so caught up into the hype and the sometimes disappointment involved with this whole process. I chased roms through a few platforms and finally learned to relax and let it happen. What a difference it is from chasing them down...

You as in me. Me as in us. Us as in everyone here.
In my time here I've begun to notice a trend we all tend to follow. We as a community of Evo 4G owners are already committed to the bleeding edge. By contributing additional time and effort to rooting, romming, and pushing our hardware, we gleefully fling ourselves over that bleeding edge into the dark abyss below.
I've reformatted and wiped my phone completely somewhere north of 200 times. Now I'm to the point where I just want something that works while I focus on other projects. In an effort to find the Holy Grail of "perfect" implementations, I've noticed that it is my own finagling with the distributions that causes instability and poor battery life.
The devs are pretty clear about what the goals of their distributions are, what you can expect, and what happens if you don't read directions. If a rom isn't living up to YOUR expectations, then either you should take inventory of what you expect from a voluntary effort or take up the mantle of cooking your own.
So next time you complain that you are on an AOSP that can't use Sense widgets, a ROM that doesn't have HDMI (and clearly states it in prior to installation) for the 1% of people who think their phone is a VCR, or doesn't get the same battery life as a nuclear submarine; you might want to take these facts into consideration.
Honestly, I know this rant is wasted on those that complain in the rom threads over and over and over again. They've already demonstrated they can't read anyway.
Be kind to our Devs. The last thing any of us needs is them to feel suffocated by our insane demands and to run off screaming into the night. Without them, you'd still all be stuck on an unrooted phone pushing 30 frames per second and getting 14 minutes of talk time before it exploded in your hands.
Well said!
well said indeed.
though i think some feedback is always need as it helps the devs in some ways. I to have noticed a lot of people have moved from feedback to demands. (the damage control rom is a good example of this. they havent put an update out in while. All yuo see when your ead the thread now is hey why isnt there an update we need an update. but when these people are asked what they think needs fixed or what they need in the update ... most just cant tell you. I'm not saying damage control is perfect as is because it isnt. there are new tweaks i am sure they could put in to adjust this or that a little. I just think it is funny how so many are demanding an update for an updates sake in that instance and because there hasnt been one refer to the rom as being dead.)
seems like a lot dont read the op for the rom either and complain. anther example is in evio 1.2 calk switched the home and back buttons function purposely. it says he did in the op and says he feels it works better and provides a zip to revert that change if you dont like it. still tons of posts of people complaining and demanding a fix yet ... its already done and explained its a feature.
sorry thought i would join your rant lol.
Until someone makes a rom with the gbs and the wifis, I reserve the right to complain like a little school girl whose shoes are too tight.

also please remember that its a phone
oh it's always nice to get that rom that "works". but sometimes it's fun to try out a new feature. if you are a constant flasher, time reinstalling is the price you pay. if a person finds themselves constantly flashing, they should make sure they use backup programs to make the process take less time. there are also OTA rom updates now, which were hinted at on WM, but since it's current iteration (6.5.x) is about to be "legacy" soon, i don't think it was made a reality. the demands vs. request thing can get annoying though. maybe an update to the forum rules where such behavior and be reported might be an option. lastly, yes, we understand that some of you paid good money for your phone and don't have a ton of cash, but there are people doing stuff for free that they could keep to themselves. skip a lunch out or a combo meal ONE time, and donate that to someone whose roms you use on a regular basis or a really cool app. if you wrap your head around it, it is reciprocation for the unselfish act these devs are doing.

Good post though. I agree with you. I'm still very new to Android, but I think some people take these things way too far.
I appreciate all of those who put so much time into helping others here, whether they be finding new root exploits, cooking roms, putting together new kernels, or designing new themes, apps, boot animations, etc.
The thing those people need to keep in mind is that the devs aren't doing it for a paycheck. They're doing it because they enjoy it. They just happen to be nice enough to share, so we can enjoy it too.

is it due to not a lot of people having the phone ? inexperienced devs? even the roms that exist have one thing or another that doesnt function properly...there only seems to be one solid rom for sure and the rest are just ehh...just trying to figure this out im coming from a device that had so many roms i didnt know what to do and on this side theres really only 3 or 4 choices. is this a froyo deal?lack of people with the units or what?
My best guess would be most devs are waiting for froyo to drop since it should be soon.

Its tuff to dev something knowing froyo us coming. I started my theme to be used on my rom but decided not to cook a rom. It well be easy to port my theme for use with froyo. A 2.1 rom ported to 2.2 us hard. It would be easier to start from scratch with a froyo build

Its the same thing that happened with the moment, almost no dev support. 1 because its a Samsung, 2 because it was the second 4g phone, 3 because its $50 more.
The Evo community is thriving though.
Look at the Moment forum on sdx-developers, then look at the Hero forum here on XDA. Same thing for the Epic vs Evo.

I really hope people will develop for Epic, I really enjoyed the ROMs on Evo. But I liked this one better, hope I didn't make a big mistake! Oh well, I haven't even rooted this one yet, maybe Ill just give it a rest for a while. I know my wife will like that. Don't mean to insult the devs, you're all we got, just wish more people had this phone.

I concur, in a perfect world this phone (which I am getting tomorrow) would be so great that I wouldn't flash rom after rom for little things such as percentage battery mod or something. I would flash roms because it looked slightly different than the previous. and always felt like something was missing. I hope i can just be satisfied with the roms and such that are available for the Epic.
Don't worry u will have plenty of devving for epic. It will not be as much as evo though as evo has much more devs and is more popular and has been out longer. But we will have quality not quantity and after froyo we will see more devving. Most devs don't wanna waste time if the update is coming in less than a month (hopefully).

Support group needed for Flashers Anonymous
Hello.
My name is "Jack" and I am a flasher.
It started out innocently, and I only flashed with a small group of like-minded individuals. But soon, my desire to flash grew into a compulsive and uncontrollable need to seek "the next big thrill" in my flashing indulgences.
I always wiped before flashing, so I at least had some interest in hygiene. But now I don't even care about that! I seldom wipe before "doing the deed" anymore. I know it's reckless and maybe even dangerous but....damn it's exciting!
Now, it seems, I find myself flashing nearly every day, and I do it in places I never would have dreamed...at work, in my car, at restaurants. I fear that soon I will be caught in the act, but that is part of what is so thrilling. I can imagine a co-worker walking in and exclaiming: "what are you doing!"
I know it's wrong and that my behavior could get me into trouble...but I can't stop!

thanks to all of the great people who put there time into these roms so people with addictions like me have something to flash I would also like to thank all the people who put time into the CM7 themes and all the extras that I have used over the past several flashes(to many names to name so I give one big thanks)
Try the 5/30 AOSP its just amazing. Never been so snappy.
I just downloaded the 5/30 last night (and flashed it- but I didn't feel like doing the market fix or changing my mtd partitions), then flashed Mild Salsa 2. I then proceeded to nandroid back to Mild Salsa-JM and play around with that and do a logcat, and then nandroided back to my AOSP/CM7 5/16 (which is my daily).
I flash alone. I flash in front of my kids...and sometimes my wife. I miss calls because of flashing. I know I could quit if I wanted to. I feel sorry for you guys that don't have that kind of will power just to stop. In fact, I'm going to leave this same rom on all day.
Oh wait...Mild Salsa 3. I guess I picked the wrong week to quit flashing roms (yes, and "Airplane" reference.
I am a hopeless and helpless flashoholic. Welcome to my nightmare!
*gasp* In front of your wife and kids??? Noooooooo. Welcome to FA!!
all my flashing led me to this .....
I have been Flashing so much that my best friend has a T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant which I will say is a pretty nice Phone .... not so nice coverage in our area where I was getting download speeds with sprint close to 1.5 he barely gets dial up speeds .... but on to my story he decided it was time to flash a ROM and knowing how addicted I was he said here you can bust my phones "Cherry" well me being the flasher that I am said .... "hey how hard can it be" well its not like my Hero (which I am so use to flashing) .... well his Vibrant has a new look and feel
I am sorry My HTC HERO it wont happen again till I get either the Nexus or HTC 3D and even then I will keep you just so I have something to flash .....
Cheater!!! How could you do that to her!!? XD

Funniest **** I've Read Up Here In A Long Time!!! Lmao....
Hello Galaxy Peeps!
I am new here on this forum, this is my first post. I have been reading a lot on this site the last couple of weeks, and have found plenty of useful and essential information for my new baby! You guys (devs and members) ROCK!
On to the subject, which is the reason why I registered so that I could start the thread.
Here is where I currently stand:
SGS2 from BELL Mobility in Montreal Canada.
**Stock ROM is UGKG2. (I am aware that this matters very little)
**GINGERBREAD 2.3.3 out of the box.
I have already experienced a little bit with upgrading the firmware via Odin to a more recent official samsung build:
RUNNING ON:
XXKH3 ROM (stock)
GINGERBREAD 2.3.4
Rooted with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH3-v4.1-CWM4
Launcher: SPB Shell 3D (absolutely beautiful and buttery smooth!! totally worth the $15... simply the best, no doubts in my mind.)
I have never used CWM to flash an update, only used it for backing up and restoring so far. I do feel very comfortable diving in though with all that I have read here so far, and deem myself ready to try some Custom ROMS. They sound great!
The only thing holding me back is that I do not want to flash endlessly to find out which ROM is the best for me. I read up all the threads about the different ROMS, however I find it very difficult to find comparisons between them and picking the right one.
So basically I would like to start this discussion and have you guys tell us what you picked for yourself, and most importantly why you like your choice. The more details the better!
This I think would be a great help for people like me and in my situation, I know it will for sure help me tremendously.
Thanks guys, and keep informing the world about SGS2. Best device out there by far, all platforms mixed in...

So you don't think that this question/invitation for discussion hasn't been asked a gazillion times already? In all the reading you say that you've done, you haven't come across other noobs posting the same things? No? Don't believe you; you clearly haven't read enough.
My advice? Don't use your 1st ever posts like this. Use them constructively. Get a shortlist of ROMs that you feel might be appropriate for your needs and if you have questions, search the relevant ROM thread. If you can't find a suitable answer, then post your question.
In my most humble opinion, this will greatly enhance your XDA experience as you won't get upset when people continuously tell you to search or flame you for being a noob. Some XDA users can be very intolerant.
In all honesty though, unless you're looking to switch to MIUI or Cyanogen, there isn't an enormous difference between the ROMs on offer. Mainly the themes and tweaks that the chef chooses to apply, but the base ROMs are essentially very similar.
I started this post with the intention of shouting at you for being imbecilic. As I wrote though, I realised that you were fairly literate and seemingly bright so I thought I'd go easy on you instead. I'm normally not this nice.

How's everyone doing?
Thanks for the replies guy, although not entirely what I was looking for... I guess to be expected with such a noob question after all I do admit to being guilty of being a noob when it come to Android and SGS, I just got my device not so long ago, coming from Samsung Omnia (WM) for a few years. Understand guys, I am not looking to get flamed here, just for a bit of advise coming from your experiences. I do understand where you guys stand, and I am sorry if I offended anyone... it was never my goal.
So far I am LOVING my new Droid!! I may not know so much when it comes to custom ROMS, but I am learning steadily when reading the posts on this site - @Major_Sarcasm yes I do read... I appreciated still the clarity and respectfulness of you reply -.
Yesterday I ended up flashing the LeoMar75 Revolution Rom and I like it up to now. It is great and is user friendly when it comes to customizations since you can use the Revolution kitchen app to download and install MOD packages. Awesome for a noob like me! I didn't even wait for any replies because I was too excited and wanted to flash ASAP on my time off, since I had already done a lot of browsing already at work. For now I think I made the right pick, and will not try to flash a different ROM, unless someone here tells me I messed up with my choice.
Finally I know many posts have been put up already for which is the best ROM out there, but if you "read" carefully my post was not entirely about that... in fact not at all!!! I stated the fact that I didn't want to try all the available ROMS out there to make a pick (too much work too little time)... that is one thing. I never anywhere in there asked what is the best ROM to use. What I was really asking is for you guys to share which you are currently using, and the reason why you like it (features, performance, etc...) or reasons why you may not like it and may want to switch back to something else. It was intended more as a discussion than a question. As you can see I already made my choice!
Again I hope I am not offending anyone, I just want to make sure I was thoroughly understood here
Hope you guys are having a great time with your babies, I sure am!
Cheers,
Raz...
Sounds good.
I think this would be a great thread if the flaming were to be non-existent.
I personally have been using Litening rom all the while, 5.0 first then 6.1 now. Satisfied with it, but I'm someone who gets bored easily so I am thinking of switching to something else. I'm also really sick of the battery life my phone offers, hopefully flashing a different rom might improve it. (I doubt so though, lol)
My main concern now is wiping - I hear its recommended to do a full wipe before flashing to other roms. So I have to do a full backup with CWM and Titanium Backup?
Deciding between LeoMar, Cognition and CyanogenMod...
Well guess what? No one has enough time to try them all out, that's why 3 of these threads pop up every day from people like you.
I want to share a moment just last week, when I was again glad I had rooted my DHD. I realize this kind of thread is unusual here, yet I think it's also important to appreciate.
I walked into a mobile shop to enquire about networks and getting a smarter tariff sorted out for my needs. When a sales assistant ignored me expressing I didn't want to change phones and whipped out his brand new HTC Evo 3D, and began to show off. He swiped the screen and a look of smug sanctification was written across his face, as the sense screens whirled.
"Oh and what phone do you have?", he half heartedly asked.
"The Desire HD", I replied.
"oh", a look of pity, or disdain (couldn't tell which) crossed his face. "about 5 generations older than my new phone".
I noticed he was running a task killer, and I commented on it, I was beginning to feel competitive, something about him suggested to me he had limited product knowledge.
I asked had he ever visited this site, as I had learned so much here about my phone and I had made the decision to root it. I got a blank look...the timing could not of been better..I then whipped out my DHD, turned it on, he looked surprised to see Sense 3 lock screen, I then whirled my screens around (such a useless exercise really). As it it smoothly came to a halt, I tilted it to show the 3d widgets ( I just couldn't help myself).
"ah, but mine has 3d and 2 processors", was he's only immediate reaction.
I just smiled and replied "and I guess you'll be getting a new phone soon again, rather than actually getting to use your phones full potential". I really at this point felt a little sad for him, he obviously updated as quick as a new phone came out under the believe newer is always better.
No matter how he dressed his phone up, and don't get me wrong it's a lovely phone he has, apart from some minor hardware specs, my rooted DHD could match his in every way and do a whole host of other useful things he would never be able to do.
"I can play Games faster on mine", was his final remark and which I raised an eyebrow, and replied "when I want to play proper games I have a PC"
Later that day, another individual in a shop asked me why I didn't wish to change phones, when I showed them, they understood totally and I pointed them to XDA.
All of this would not have been possible with out the Great bunch of Devs, chefs, and the general great feedback you get here on XDA, and I wish to say a massive thank you, your efforts are very much appreciated, and hopefully soon I'll be in a position to donate as well.
Would be good to hear any others tales of your Rooted DHD happy moments..
Dang, I'm in awe. Awesome story! I love the way you reply to the salesperson.
Yeahhhh beautiful!
We always encounter such circumstances! And we always feel like winners!
Personally, i encounter such things probably once a week when i show off my phone, especially with my friends having Sensation phone while i have FOR FREE a sensation ROM!
Cheers!
Awesome story. I love it. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I have had my phone rooted for the last 7 months, yet I never felt the need till then to show it. My phone is my own, and not everyone can appreciate what rooting can achieve. Something about him, brought out 7 months of glee in me...I'm proud I didn't go overboard..still the thoughts persist with that sales assistant. I know he was doing his job to a point.
Yet personal it became as he didn't validate, he just mocked. Until he became desperate to validate he's own ego.
I'm very tempted to go back and show him a ROM by Capychimp, RCTeam and Coolexe I've had on my phone since first Beta.

I've not themed it yet, which probably would tip the scales
I wonder am I being over the top? I'm normally would just let it go, yet I don't feel he is stupid, just lacking in the search for knowledge.
Either way, not really important I'm happy with my phone, and that's what really matters.
great story, had the same thing happen to me when i had an htc aria running 2.3.3 gingerbread when the inspire 4g came out. lol
After 10 months, i still think that i have got a new phone
i love this story
loved the story!
thumbs up for your answer
Salesmen, pish!
I've never been the type to constantly update to the latest and greatest as soon as they become available, and I love the fact that my DHD still feels fresh and new today as the day I got it.
Thumbs up for XDA, ROM Devs and this thread!
Hahaha awesome feedback but Desire HD are lucky owners that our device got the most support as any other device if I'm not wrong. First sense 3 and sense 3.5 was ported on this device. It's still a great phone. Thanks to all our Great Devs here n xda
