And I realized why most people find it hard to use smartphones other than the iPhone. It is not based around the concept of 'iPhone is naturally easier because it just WORKS' but more along the lines of people have this notion that smartphones SHOULD behave/look like the iPhone.
For instance, when I showed my friend my Evo he looked at the screen and said "Where are the apps?" I said I only keep a few on the main screen that I use frequently such as SMS/Phone/Voicemail/Dropbox etc but the rest are in the app drawer. He said "Yeah... but that's gay they should all be on the screens" after switching from screen to screen only to find a few apps here and there I realized that people are accustomed to the clutter and confusion of iOS rather than the simplicity and organization of Android. It really seems counter intuitive to me. While the iPhone is a ****ing AMAZING phone (whoever says otherwise is a fanboy) it definitely loses in some areas to Android but people base their standards off the iOS which is a clear bias. I never knew how much of a grasp Apple has on the smartphone industry until this event. Coming from a Blackberry and having owned an iPod I found the transitions to be seamless but I also worked at IT for a long duration.
The conclusion I reached was that the notion of Android is harder to use because you need to be a geek to understand it is also false. Android is not more difficult to use, it is just different in itself. Turning on wifi on an iPhone is the same process. Downloading an APP is the same as well. Making phone calls and sending texts are identical. Hopefully we can see a growth in smartphone technologies that embrace the BEST possible user experience which I believe goes to Android for their sheer volume of phones as well as operating system capabilities.
Sounds like your describing that evo vs. iphone video on youtube and your friend is the character repeating "I don't care".
Are you happy with your device? Does it do what you want the way you want?
You are all that matters....
good day.
Kinda... but its not utter stupidity - more ignorance. What I am trying to say is that the iPhone has been the epitome of what a touchscreen smartphone SHOULD look and behave like.
I enjoy Android but I honestly got the Evo because of Sprints plan coupled in with unlimited bandwidth was a great money saving choice for a smart phone. Also, the fact that I can roam on Verizon meant I could get signal where an iPhone could not.
Honestly though, if I could get an iPhone on Sprints network with unlimited data + tethering as I do now for under $80 I would jump on that offer. Really love that phone and the game development is skyrocketing. I do enjoy the Evo, however. Cant complain about its amazing screen size and custom roms I can put in. Also the free tethering is nice
I guess your conclusion also explains why in every smartphone review, the iPhone is mentioned several times also.
Yup. Now if only we could get that phone out of the ATT deathgrip.

So you do want the iphone...
I'm not surprised that the iphone is the standard - there are a lot more of them than any other smartphone. And they're very nice phones.
That said, I much prefer my evo. Even if the iphone became available outside AT&T, I'm sticking with android. While the iphone has more games (and fart apps), android allows more customization. I'm also not limited to a single controlled app market. Finally, my aging eyes love the large screen.
My girlfriend has a mytouch slide and after having the phone for a week I was showing her how to use it and she didn't even realize there was a menu button. You miss out on an awful lot without using that button lol.

Pretty sure the BB curve still holds the crown.
That said, I am moving my mom from her BB curve to an EVO in December. I'll do the same with the EVO that I did with the curve. I will set it up so everything she wants is on the home screens. I'll give it a nice, clean look and make sure the fonts are right, etc.
She wants it for the big screen, not because it is fast, customizable, or anything else.

I prefer: Common sense is not that common.
I agree with the OP 100%. People are creatures of habit and don't realize that in the same way a PC differs from a MAC, an Android phone will differ from iOS based phone. I think that people will buy anything that has a lower case "i" in front of it just because Apple found a niche in the way they advertise. I don't have a problem with their products. My beef with them is based on their communist approach to business and the fact that they don't care about their customers.
Personally, I have never nor will I ever buy anything Apple. It has nothing to do with being an Android fan-boy so much as it is about being an Apple hater. lol Although I will say that my first experience with Android has left me wanting to kick myself for not switching over sooner.

I made the terrible mistake of buying my g/f an iPod nano about a year ago. I really should have known better but she really wanted it. I got her hooked on Android with her Hero last Dec and she is now enamored with her EVO. My current challenge is I'm trying to convince her to let me see if I can hit her iPod with a .50 cal round at about 400 yards.
I'd settle for using my AR at 200 yards but the .50 would be so much more gratifying

Bwahaha! My girl wanted an iPod for her birthday a few years back, and when she opened the box, there was a Zune in it. She looked at me as if I had just said something about her momma. After a week, she was loving it. She was able to remove that resource-hungry iTunes software from her computer (she had it on there because of an iPod Shuffle she previously was using but broke), and it made her computer faster, too.
If you ever take the .50 cal to the iPod, make sure you use the Evo to capture the event.

Yeah, I got it for her but with the caveat that it could only ever make a usb connection with HER COMPUTER.
I think I'll have to actually get her a raplacement before she'll give it up. I'm thinking either a Zune or a 16gb microsd card for her EVO.
Also, rest assured if I ever do get her iPod out to the range.. the event will be captured and shared
iPhone is a bit too easy and locked down for my tastes. I like being able to apply themes, change my Home app, etc. I think that alone makes Android look much better than iPhone. My iPhone friend who is an Apple fanboy agrees that the Android setup is much better and widgets are awesome.
Icons on icons is ugly to me. It's almost insulting.

Zune HD ftw. I have had a 16 gig since launch day. Sexy screen, light and portable, and best of all the battery life is ****ing outstanding. Also, the best music browsing/playability out of any device to date.
Yea, the Zune is pretty. Although to be honest, I would invest in a 32GB SD card for my Evo and use that instead of using two separate devices. While the UI of the Zune is pretty, I wouldn't spend the money on it when I have a phone I already carry with me all the time that can do the same thing.

Look dude, I'm not trying to start more shiz in another one of your threads.. I'm appalled by your behavior in your WTF WIFI?!?! thread, but that's another story. I'm asking you politely to check your language. You could have just as, if not more effectively covered your point without dropping an f-bomb.. Again, not trying to start shiz.
I have no experience with zune but everyone I know that has one LOVES it, and several of them have models that are OOOLLLDDD, so that says something to me about build quality. On the other hand, a big sdcard full of music would conveniently negate the need for another device to purchase and keep charged, but would likely mean I'd have to hook her up with another battery or two or an extended battery. Oh what a dilemma, now I have to research and purchase more technology

Okay fine lets agree to be police to so others don't have to deal with it.
I was thinking about getting an SD card for my Evo but the only crappy thing is I want to carry my music around in places that I don't want to take my phone like the gym. Not only are phones prohibited in some gyms, I couldn't bear to accidentally drop a weight on my phone or get too sweaty and short it out etc etc. Although I love my Zune and it cost me as much as my Evo did, it is not nearly the same device as far as capabilities.
Plus, another thing with the Evo is you don't really need an extra sd card. Just setup Dropbox accounts and you're good to go. I have all my music on dropbox and I just stream it perfectly.
Not to hijack, but I also have a dropbox account. How are you streaming music to your evo?

Well as long as Samsung support the current Galaxy S line with updates I will be happy, if they don't, I know I won't be buying a Samsung phone again.
Even though they keep coming out with new phones doesn't mean yours isn't good. Root that baby, flash a rom and fall in love with your phone all over again.

cant wait for dual core smartphones with dedicated gpu.
4.5" screen
5+mp camera w/ flash and dedicated camera button
actual hard buttons
and of course ANDROID
And of course with the same 13-1500mAh batteries these has, so we'll have like 5000 threads about terrible battery life, etc.
Personally, I don't think there is anything great about the Vibrant outside of the screen. That was Samsung's main selling point. The GPU is good, but there are now apps popping up left and right that are claiming "No Support for Samsung Galaxy S."
Yahoo Messenger for Android now has no Support for Galaxy S, Lol.
Not going to bother buying another Samsung phone anyways, but certainly not going to buy another phone with internals outside of the mainstream.
I personally view them going in another direction IRT hardware has a massive failure. That's like buying a Windows Computer with an AMD Processor, and Microsoft telling you Live Messenger isn't supported on you computer because you got AMD instead of Intel, or Microsoft Office won't run on your computer because you're running Windows Vista instead of 7, or WoW won't run on your computer because you got an ATI instead of an NVidia. Massive failure, IMO.
Apps > Hardware.
Then there's the issue of a bunch of apps simply being incompatible due to the phone only having Android 2.1...
If you expect a Nexus S or whatever to change that, then I dunno what to say. 90% of high end smartphones run Snapdragons and most don't run TouchWiz, so developers will continue to target architectures which are the majority - as they should, cause targetting Samsung's phone and ending up with apps that crash and burn on all those other phones would be utterly retarded.

Got in the site... i figured it out and didn't have to watch that whole video lol
Please tell me your not mad that technology is advancing. Really? Is it such a bad thing? Nobody is forcing you to go out and buy the newest, fastest and greatest device. Personally I think while the vibrant may lack in 2.2 and some other things like flash and a 4.3" screen or HSPA+ it more than makes up for in MONSTER graphics computing, overall speed, a beautiful 4" SAMOLED screen and a camera that takes pretty amazing pics. I did expect better support from samsung considering the phone is across all carriers However I did buy the phone as is so I cant complain too much. it still holds its own against any other device out right now. Plus... The Nexus 2 will basically be a Galaxy S so we should see easy porting to our devices once gingerbread is released and android 3.0.
Hopefully we'll see some advanced implimentation of battery technology to make these handsets last a while with usage. Cause I don't want to see another ZOMG! I got 47 hours of battery.... with everything off.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
Thing about it is, I thought about this too.. What is out that your phone can't do? It can run all the latest apps, and will even be able to support gingerbread. You could have a 5ghz phone, but what good will it do? The 1/4 second that it would be quicker would not be noticeable.
Galaxy S. Maybe the next version will include the P, so it will have a GPS~
Slow down??? Hell no! Speed up with new devices already. And the Vibrant is just fine. I use it, it has an awesome screen, and new updates get uploaded on XDA almost on a daily basis. And I love watching new phones appear. It just means that by the time I get around to another upgrade in about 14 months, the phones at that time will be that much better. So keep innovating, companies, and improving and releasing new phones.

What exactly are you talking about. No one is complaining about technology advancing. People are complaining mostly (and mostly indirectly) about the rate at which hardware/devices are deprecated and forgotten about.
Lots of people come from a long background in using computers, so they are not used to seeing a 1 year old device become "unsupported" for the most part.

Yes, those threads piss me off so much I don't even open battery threads anymore unless it's one I posted in and there's a chance a reply may be directed at me.
Most people with great battery life hardly use the phone. I get 20 hours easy when it sits there in Standby for 18.5 of those hours. Once I start using the phone, the battery is crap. I actually had to uninstall some very useful applications so the battery wouldn't commit suicide.

Yep. Actually noticed the G2 add play 3x tonight. The hinge is crap, but at least the phone works as expected.
A phone doesn't have to be "really that good" to be worth the investment. In many cases, like the Vibrant, when the phone is supposed to be "really that good" it just turns out to be a failed result of overreaching.
I got this phone because it had a lot of storage in it, and it's not like T-Mobile had that many choices when it came to high end smartphones when the Vibrant was released. Some people replying to posts act like the G2, MyTouch4G, HD7, etc. were being sold in stores in July/August.
There was the HD2, and the Vibrant. That's it. The rest of T-Mobile's phones were utter crap.

This right here. What should have been a wonderful experience has been badly sullied by non-existent support.
Buying a phone on a 2 year contract and finding out that the phone isn't even properly supported for 4 months should be enough to piss anyone off.

I've had my Xoom since Wednesday and I'm 100% happy. I have experienced only a few FC's. The only widget I have found that doesn't work is Facebook. The only time I have experienced keyboard lag is in the browser.
Have you tried a factory reset? Maybe that will clear things up?
Do yourself a favor and return it for another one because something is wrong with the one you got. The xoom is my first android device and i'm amazed. Everything runs great. It's amazing to me that people knowingly assume the role of early adoptor, and don't expect issues. It's part of the process. You can gather from these boards what the general experience is: a pleasant work in progress that needs some apps and a little polish. If your experience is wildly different, it's either a faulty Xoom or you shouldn't buy the flagship device for a very new OS. You also might not know how to get the most out of this thing.
Nobody makes an issue out of the Facebook widget because.... it's a Facebook widget. If you that falls into "things you can't live without it until 3.01", then take the Xoom back.

the price of the device has nothing to do with whether a third party widget designed for a phone should work or not. if this is your only problem, i'd say the xoom's a winner.
To the OP, my biggest problems are FC's of the browser. It used to crash every 5 minutes. I rebooted, and for me, that solved the problem. knock on wood, but no FC of the browser in a day.

I think some people expect way to much. Everyone on this forum should know the meaning of "early adopter" (**** look at the nexus on and still that is the best phone I have ever owned). Not just that but all I hear is a bunch of *****ing and moaning over the Xoom. It either costs too much or some other whining. I love it and I can't put it down and compared to the hundreds if reviews I read I figured that hneycomb was horrible but it is actually running pretty well on mine. I mean I get the occasional force close but god its a .0 release and its the first of its class. If a widget doesn't work blame Facebook (or any other 3rd party developer) if anyone thinks the samsung 10.1 will be better theyre in for a rude awakening.

I addressed you in another thread but would like to use this thread since you started it to gather data. Would you kindly provide a list of the apps/widgets that FC when you try to use them? I would like to install one or two here and see if the same results happen. The next step of that process is to contact those developers and ask them if they would be willing to update their software to support the 3.0 Framework.
Agreed, I love my Xoom. It does everything I need it to do and then some. I travel frequently and just the fact that I no longer have to use my laptop while sitting in airports or coffee shops justifies my purchase. I think many people came in with expectations that were waaay too high for this class of device. Excellent battery life, email and web browsing on the go plus all of my ebooks in one place for easy access are all that I asked for. Video could be better but not as bad as ppl are making it out to be. Could Gingerbread and the Xoom both be better? Absolutely, but neither is bad by any stretch of the imagination. I think alot of people were expecting netbook power and functionality in tablet form, but you certainly don't get that with any of the other competing tablets out there so why hold the Xoom to such a high standard? I'll be keeping mine until the quad core processors are out and we see a major jump in screen resolution, but for now, I'm completely satisfied with my purchase. I think the Xoom is amazing considering it has the processing power of full size laptops out only a few short years ago...

If a widget doesn't work blame Facebook (or any other 3rd party developer) if anyone thinks the samsung 10.1 will be better theyre in for a rude awakening.

well put sir
@theahlenius I was waiting for someone to say something along these lines. It is fair to say that for the average consumer this device is not fully ready to be put out. The norm is to only put a device on the market after it is fully ready to be released, welcome to the world of beta (the device is further than beta but still just like beta there can be quirks with a new os and lack of app support.) But I do have a few things that I want to say, 1) it was known that there was going to be things not working, ie the sdcard, flash, and that 4g was upgradeable( the lte network is still new they are still running tests on the thing with real world traffic use, give it time. you realize the crap that could go wrong releaseing a device like this on to a new network without testing its capabilities first *shivers*). Then there are people complaining about apps not working, ITS A NEW OS, The sdk that enables dev's to optimize their apps for tablets hasn't been out that long. Again it takes time, and the dev's haven't had time to make changes and fix any issues. I as well am getting the issue with the facebook app, thats about the only one, its expected though as it was built on 2.2 sdk and not 3.0 or 2.3.3. Guys really if you dont expect issues being a early release adopter return your Xoom and go get a controlled experience where Apple will hold your hand iPad.
I love my Xoom & I take it with me everywhere so I can show it off too & people are in awe of it...I know no tablet that can compare to it.too my dell streak 7 back & got this & so glad I did. This thing just works with no lags!! My ipod collects a lot of dust too now.

the xoom isn't perfect but yes we are early adopters. just like the nexus one and now the nexus s when they first came out, there are sure to be problems.
be patient, keep up to date on these forums, and the fixes and patches should roll out via google/moto or here on xda.
aside from all the problems that my xoom is having (random force closes, lag here and there), i'm enjoying this device. just rooted it and not sure if i want to take the plunge in to overclocking. don't feel as safe in doing it vs. my nexus s and dell streak since i dished out a crapload of money on it lol.

Everything you say I don't second 100%.
The Samsung kies is a Jock I agree but ITunes is the Jail.
However one thing is true, after so many years Android still behaves as a beta OS on my $770 device, its my first Android and I'm absolutely disappointed with it, yesterday I had to create a new contact, it took over six seconds to just open the application, was so embarrassing in front of the guy.
The multitasking is not well implemented either, the Chess application closed itself while I was surfing the net with the browser, this would never happen on my WM HD2 with a much lesser RAM.
My last hope is the promised ICS.
As for the iPhone, I have used it for years, and I don't like its complete dependency on ITunes, I could use the Winscp after it was jailbroken but was to much a hassle to use,it just doesn't have the freedom which comes with Android and also which came with WM for that matter.
Now for the last part of your post, and which looks like is one of the main reasons that many of us got the GNote ,hence migrating to Android ,is the GNote itself, specifically its big screen size,I myself am not ashamed to say that it was the sheer size and the hardware specs of the Note which brought me to the Android world , I always preferred the now discontinued WM rather than many Android ROMS which was available for my HD2.
Now for the big question:
Do you think that Apple will ever release a device with a screen measuring over 5", I doubt it, since I won't go back to smaller size anymore.
So, for the smartphone lovers, there is not- the so called -The Perfect hardware/software combination as of yet, but its evolving, and the effort of the great Devs in this forum runs in that direction.

Whenever I encounter such whining, I wonder to myself wtf people have been smoking. I had a 2nd gen iPhone, and after switching to Android, I did not have much issues with my HTC Desire. There were some hiccups, but there was never anything as bad as what the threadstarter claimed. Even with my Galaxy Note, I have yet to encounter random reboots or any strange issues.
What it comes down to is this,i Phones are more user friendly therefore if your not willing or at the least eager to do tweaks to your phone or any sort of major/minor modding iOS is perfect for you. If your more of a techy or at least understand how technology works Android is for you. I equally love both my now sold iPhone 4 and my Note each had it's uses.

My god, that's my quote in your signature.
i am complete android fanboy, but i can understand the frustation of OP or any first time android user. That is why, even though i use android myself, i would not recommend android to regular iphone user, like my wife, or my kids (my 3-year old can immediately operate iphone to search for his game apps and run it successfully after being shown only 1 time, while given android phone, he can successfully crash it almost all the time lol)
We have to admit, there are still rooms for android to grow in terms of user friendliness. But ya, each os has its own strength and weakness. For tinkerer, there's android, and for those who love ease of use, there's ios / iphone.

What I don't understand is why go complain here and even more iPhone fans lurking to jump in the party. It's like just because some almighty iPhone users decided to use Android, now all Android users have to bow to their desire and satisfy their way of doing things.
I don't think Android developers purpose is to make it like iOS to satisfy Apple fans. Its Android and its open (to an extend). You don't like it, try something else, there are choices, or if you can, develop something for it, or simply go back to Microsoft and/or Apple. Otherwise, if you dislike Android so much, no one is forcing you to buy the device in the first place, get a refund.
I can't imagine one would go to an iOS forum and flame iOS and talk about how great Android is, but sadly I guess there are some that do that too. Sadly, there will many more threads like this in the future.
Also, here: forum.iphone-developers.com
i agree with threadstarter to a certain degree. . although a number of the problems you mentioned on your note i dont have. .
but. . . . .
if iphone had a bigger screen i prob would go back as well .. not sure if its a better operating system or just something im used to. . i have been using iphones for over 4 years so obviously I'm partial towards them. .
With that said. . I am going to give android a real shot. . i think it will take a little bit of work effort to really learn to use a new system. .after that I will give judgement . .(i dont think its fair to just a system based on one month against a system i used for 48 months)
There are some def advantages to using an android and some def advantages to using an iphone. .
The iphone operating system is great but has many problems as well . .there is no perfect operating system. . its what suits you best. .
you give a good ans "Alejandrissimo"
Last one is genius.
the biggest complain of apple fans regarding Android can be summed up that way :
"wtf, it's not iOs".
let's not even try to do what you want any other way than stock, if it's not included then it's not good enough, right ?

Wrong perspective. iOS is a mature platform therefore the app developers have had their time with building apps for it. Apps on iphone are slick alright. But Saying that 50% of apps are copies of the ones on iOS is just lame. All app developers have to maintain a standard design of an app irrespective of platforms. Does Facebook on iPhone look different compared to the one on the Droids NO! So the Facebook app on DROIDs is a Copy? uhhh...

I like the kids corner thing... really its multi user mode. I just don't think it is a bullet point for 99% of consumers. I watch parents hand their phones to their kids for entertainment every day. Its a nice feature to have multi user environments but needs a better selling job from ms. Think "risque photos on a girls phone, being handed to dad, to make a phonecall" , yes , there is a win.
The features that other phones have had aren't really a huge selling point, if wp just implemented them. It comes across as 'me too!'
If people dont notice the new home screen, its not "new" enough. Having to point out that a puppy has "really floppy cute ears, see !" Means they aren't a big deal, or aren't floppy or cute, or NEW enough. That part is painful to watch. I really felt sorry for the salesman in the wp videos on youtube.
If noticed though, that the latest youtube channel videos are playing on the "smoked" promotion idea. Sending a text message 3 seconds faster (or other very practiced objectives by the host) is a yawner now. It was funny at first with 'smoked' but the stacking of the deck spoiled the fun, people resented it. Guess Microsoft's advertising dollars are learning, and persistant, even to a fault.

You're delusional. You also obviously are missing the entire point of a mobile experience. They can all have the same features across the board, the implementation is the key focus here. Windows Phone is a joy and ease to use. iPhone is extremely simple to use, but the potential and implementation of it's features are a headache. The ONLY thing that those other two platforms may have over Windows Phone is the marketshare and mindshare to utilize their potentials. Once specific WinPhone8 apps begin to come out, and I mean REAL apps utilizing the new developer features, then you'll see this come to the forefront even more. Android can clean me after a bowel movement, doesn't mean it isn't the most inefficient OS ever created, REQUIRING multiple cores to even be close to the fluidity of Windows Phone. I got honest with myself and said "do I really need the ability to install multiple file explorers on my phone?"

ahhh, "they all can" as in a comparison, not "they all do". sorry, I missed that the first time. gotit.
the rest was "chicken before the egg, which is first" as far as developers go. I was serious in the question as to whether wp9 will be ready when android share starts declining. the developers and mindshare needs to be priority number 1 right now at microsoft campuses.
given past quotes from microsoft, wp8 was in develope
ment when wp7 was released. hopefully wp9 is well underway, tiles have been rethunk, along with opening the platform up and feeding devs everything NOW. (sorry for the run on)
might be a good idea to keep all these wp8 early adopters in mind too... hard to get folks to walk across the same burning bridge twice.

Used a GSIII for about 26 days, it was easily the worst experience I've had on a mobile device. Before you ask yes it was on the stock AT&T ROM. Bloatware everywhere and applications wouldn't be in alphabetical order. It felt unorganized and not uniform to me, I must have OCD and require theme colors lol.
Personally found myself using my phone a lot less when I had the GSIII then when I had my Lumia 920 in just the day to day of whipping it out and messing around with it. Also Skype never worked consistently on the GSIII that was a real pain.
In a side note most reviewers said you have to use two hands on the 920...I single hand it constantly with no issues whatsoever. Guess my hands are freakishly strong or I'm not a little girl.
