If you have USB in Debug mode it will not work. Check it in Settings/Applications/Development
Uncheck USB Debugging and try again.
Hi,
If you are on Win, install Kies who install USB driver.
If your are on Linux the recent version of adb doesn't work, use an old version.
Regards
You are correct flsts I was in debug mode and could not connect.
Im now rooted and lag free and good to go.
This galaxy tab (t-mobile) is amazing. I sold one, for t-mo, to my sister last night after Thanksgiving dinner. She was blown away by android and the g-tab just like me.
Thank you flsts and hartyshow for your valuable information!

I just put it in the root of my SD card and clicked on the app and clicked install.
it takes a bit of time but it works great.
Try redownloading if it still does not work.
did you dl from rapidshare and get a ~100kB file? That happened to me and I dled from one of the other posts, got a ~100MB file and it worked fine.
Yeah looks like that is what I did. There's a different link in a later part in that thread for hotfile which worked

It may be a drivers issue. I know on windows, you need to download the drivers for your phone to be recognized.

Honestly, I'm not sure. Because I have the SDK and with just that Odin wouldn't recognize it. So I had to download separate Samsung drivers. Then it was recognized. He may need to use a friends PC. Again, I'm not sure. I won't pretend to know what you'd need for Linux but all I know is the SDK wasn't enough and we have Samsung drivers for 32 and 64 bit.

I'm not sure there is any for Linux. Just windows. That's why I said he may need to use a friends PC. I'm only aware of Windows drivers.

I found this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
It says the SDK drivers should be good for Linux.
I didn't know there was a release of ODIN for *NIX
Is your friend using a VMWare or similar or running ODIN via Wine or similar?
If you run it in a virtual machine you need to install the drivers, if it is an emulated app, a.k.a Wine, Cedega you will run into issues.
Damn ok its kinda weird that he can get it in download mode but the computer is not recognizing it its just weird to me

You can't use Odin in Linux, at least not by its self. Wine wont work because it doesn't recognize USB inputs.
If you want to Odin in Linux you have to get your virtual machine software of your choice. A commercial version, because the open-source versions won't allow USB drivers either.
There is a thread about this in general somewhere. There is a person in that thread that has done it and recommended a virtual machine software and confirms it works. I just can't remembered the name of it. I tried but after spending 2 hours installing windows i found out about the open source USB thing. By then my girl was home and i just used her netbook. [email protected]#k it.

This thread on androidforums.com shows how to make the OSE VirtualBox work with USB pass-through.
I haven't tried it myself, but I'm going to ASAP.
EDIT: It doesn't work. Must use the VirtualBox Personal Use and Evaluation License (PUEL) version which is free, but not Open Source. The PUEL edition has USB support built-in. It is available for download here. I am downloading and installing it now.
Ok, I've rooted my phone before but had to reset the phone to all stock because I downloaded an impaled version of angry birds to get the ads off and make the game run smoother....never doin that again lol. Anyway, I tried using the one click root like I did the 1st time but its not findin my phone. I think it says something like it does not recognize adf internally or externally. I downloaded the right samsung driver, put the debugging on, and used the usb cord that came wit the phone and it still doesn't work. I already have CWM (I pushed it on the phone wit odin) and have the stock kernel. now I just need root again

You can contact Samsung for Kies support or if you feel comfortable just flash full package with Odin.

Dear bro, what did you use to upgrade your fw? Odin or Kies?
Can you use the 3 button to go to download mode? If you can, find a firmware to flash it with odin.

welcome to my word of 1 week ago.. got my phone now 2 weeks
Updating trhough Kies worked normally for me. Maybe uninstall the drivers en reinstall. Update kies and retry? What error does it give?
You are better of flashing from Android 2.1 to other ROM's because it has Recovery 2e instead of the Recovery 3e.
I am running Darky's ROM and I love it ^^ still minor bugs but the 2.1 and 2.2 are even worse xD

Ahhh, I see. The problem is downloading process of the firmware, not during the flashing process. This means that the [email protected] Samsung is not working, probably sure to lost connection.
Try it another day perhaps.

This sounds like a driver issue if it cant' detect your phone, try another usb port and uninstall/reinstall kies, once the install is good make sure it says connected to kies on your phone, if not then look in your device manager and make sure all the drivers are installed. I've heard of people having issues with windows 7 64 bit.
Thanks guys you all have been a great help... Finally upgraded my galaxy s to froyo using kies... Dunno what i did to get it download the binary... JPA is froyo fw right? But its different from what i saw on youtube... Now i cant dismount my internal sd card, its lagging, plus i cant open my built in fb sw...

Strange... JPA is Froyo, but i would have thought JPO would be the one you recieved (unless im mistaken?).
Do you feel confident enough to root and rom your device?
If i root my device i'm afraid tjat the warranty would be void... I saw thay jp is froyo and the letter that follows is regional... Not quite sure bout that... In Singapore n msia we are having jpa...

I created a tool a while back for Galaxy S II owners to backup and restore the '/efs' partition and perform basic NV Repair on their devices.
This proved so popular that I recently updated the application which now includes a feature to automatically detect the mount point of the '/efs' partition. This allows any supported device to be used with EFS Pro and also adds support for future devices.

That's cool, you should head on over to the Note section and announce it there too.

If you're in nvflash mode, then it means that your bootloader is corrupted. Use the nvflash utility to install a new bootloader to recover from this.
If your bootloader is locked, you're not going to be able to recover.
