It may be a drivers issue. I know on windows, you need to download the drivers for your phone to be recognized.

Honestly, I'm not sure. Because I have the SDK and with just that Odin wouldn't recognize it. So I had to download separate Samsung drivers. Then it was recognized. He may need to use a friends PC. Again, I'm not sure. I won't pretend to know what you'd need for Linux but all I know is the SDK wasn't enough and we have Samsung drivers for 32 and 64 bit.

I found this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
It says the SDK drivers should be good for Linux.

I didn't know there was a release of ODIN for *NIX
Is your friend using a VMWare or similar or running ODIN via Wine or similar?
If you run it in a virtual machine you need to install the drivers, if it is an emulated app, a.k.a Wine, Cedega you will run into issues.

Damn ok its kinda weird that he can get it in download mode but the computer is not recognizing it its just weird to me
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

You can't use Odin in Linux, at least not by its self. Wine wont work because it doesn't recognize USB inputs.
If you want to Odin in Linux you have to get your virtual machine software of your choice. A commercial version, because the open-source versions won't allow USB drivers either.
There is a thread about this in general somewhere. There is a person in that thread that has done it and recommended a virtual machine software and confirms it works. I just can't remembered the name of it. I tried but after spending 2 hours installing windows i found out about the open source USB thing. By then my girl was home and i just used her netbook. [email protected]#k it.

This thread on androidforums.com shows how to make the OSE VirtualBox work with USB pass-through.
I haven't tried it myself, but I'm going to ASAP.
EDIT: It doesn't work. Must use the VirtualBox Personal Use and Evaluation License (PUEL) version which is free, but not Open Source. The PUEL edition has USB support built-in. It is available for download here. I am downloading and installing it now.

the only way i got it to work was unrared the files into a folder, and plugged in my phone in usb debug mode and went to device manager and manually had each thing search for drivers in the new folder, after i installed one thing another popped up with a ? next to it and did that a few times till everything worked.

There are no videos that I know of and your question is very vague. First of all, have you put your phone in USB debugging mode? If so, then try other USB ports and if that doesn't work try a different computer. That is the only help I can give you. If you are using the oneclickrootandrecovery made by Drockstar it is rock solid and very very easy to use.

Wow, just wow. Please don't respond to any more questions. Heimdall is the program for Macs but most people I've talked to cannot get it to work. If you have a newer Mac and want to continue flashing I would recommend getting a copy of Windows and using it to use Odin.

Heimdall is an open source replacement for Odin. It is meant to use the same files that Odin uses.
You need to decompress the odin tar ball. The files are in there. You will like heimdall once you get use to it. I only use linux so I had to compile it and use it. I prefer it to odin. I how that helps.

[Q] Bricked my Epic and my mac isn't recognizing my phone!

I had MIUI installed on my phone, I tried going to a different ROM and I ended up bricking my phone. It was starting to load the new rom then it powered off and then restarted and has not gone past the samsung screen. My phone is able to go into download mode and so I tried reloading software using heimdall and my Mac is not recognizing my phone. I've tried almost every trick I can think of to get it to recognize, no good. Am I SOL? Or does someone know something I don't to get it to work?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
Heimdall for mac seems to be pretty much borked I couldn't get my macbook to recognize the phone either.. either use bootcamp to boot into windows on your mac and odin, or DL everything you'll need, odin, tarball, samsung drivers etc to a flash drive and drive over to a friends with a windows machine, it will go really quick if u have everything u need
You can't get into clockword recovery, right?

dont worry u can fix this.as the other guy said your gonna have to put all the files in a flash drive and then take it to a windows computer. form there first install samsung drivers. Once done open odin and connect ur phone. put it in download mode. also i believe your going to have to repartition. but dont worry, odin will do this for you. I can give u links to the stock files if youd like and i will guide you through it. if u want help then just reply to this post
what you did is: MIUI is a MTD ROM therefore your phone was MTD and not BML and you probably tried flashing a BML ROM this caused confusion and just bricked it

Root lg g2 with Linux?

So been searching and searching and really hope I don't have to put windows on my computer for this to be done. Sprint varient but I'm pretty sure some other Linux users out there are wondering the same.
Not new to xda or android. But I've always had nexus phones and was always able to use the OEM unlock in terminal. seeing how this was a free phone I said **** it. I like the phone itself but the software is ass. All the bloat is ridiculous didn't know you guys had this mucvh crap on your phones. ( nexus no bloat).
Anybody willing to point me In the right direction or we can figure this **** out together no problem hooking someone up with logcats and ****.

kidrobot52,
This is relevant to my interests.
I haven't gotten my phone yet, but root, cwm etc using Linux would be awesome. Otherwise a method that doesn't require a computer at all would be even better.
From what I've read you're going to need the drivers and they are Windows only, but if you had success doing root with your method, please describe it to us. :fingers-crossed:
Compass.
So I rooted my lg on a friends PC. But is still want to know if this works. Being that ioroot also works rooting the sprint galaxy tab 3 I'm going to try and rooot it on Linux that easy if I **** up I still have my phone. Lol but if it works correctly I will unroot my lg g2 and try rooting it again in Linux. I'll report back tonight my findings.

I downloaded ioroot13.zip from the link below, and it has a linux script. :good:

Searching xda's forums nobody mentions that drivers are necessary for rooting with Linux.

Well that sent new into multiple boot loops. Must've been something I did trying again. On my lg when I go into download mode it gets stuck at firmware update do not unplug USB. And stays at 0 so I'm baffled.
A side note if never needed drivers for my phone on Linux. But then again I come from nexus devices.

No need to install any driver.
However, you need to configure your system to recognize LG Phones so ADB will be able to list it
Check how to do it on android development site. Search for 'Using Hardware Devices'

The major issue I had was that the ioroot I was using didn't detect my phone.

Indeed you don't need drivers for Linux.
I configured udev in my box to detect my phone but I'm not certain that is really necessary.
If you type "./adb devices" and get as output "<serial number> device", your phone has been detected.
