I've been flashing roms and kernels for over a year now so I know what those are, what they do, and how to flash them. The latest version of Quantum Rom requires the DK17 modem, though, and I don't really know what that is. Where do I get the DK17 modem and do I just flash it like everything else?

A modem is the phone's baseband and (someone else correct me if I'm wrong) it controls how the phone interacts with GPS, WiMax and the CDMA network. As for how to flash it, see this thread (can't post links yet)

Haha thanks! In coming from WinMo, IMO all of this android stuff is way easier to use than WinMo's modding tools.

A modem is short for Modulator/Demodulator. It is the part of device communications that allow them to "talk".

i am thinking about flashing to 2.2 however i have a question what exactly is a modem in which it pertains to froyo?
PyRo
dont know if bumping is allowed but i need this question answered.

Bumping is frowned upon, but a modem is the radio in your phone. When you see a modem file to flash, it's the firmware for your phone's radio. New versions (like the DK17 beta froyo release) need the modem firmware updated because the kernel drivers will not work with an older radio firmware like the ones from DI18, etc.

Its possible....but probably illegal on their part to query your phone for that info...No They won't know who is running it and who is not. If they did, they would only really have a good idea just how many beta testers XDA has to offer up
Hey all, I have just been curious why there seems to be so little love for mac users. I understand that this is all difficult stuff to work with, so I cant complain too much, but I just wish that we had things like ODIN available to us as well. I recently switched to DK28 via the Update.zip (no ODIN) method and lost my GPS so I figured I would just go back to DI18 until the official OTA rolled out. Unfortunately this turned out to be impossible for me without ODIN (no one around me has a PC). Not trying to turn this into a sob story, just wondering if there are any others out there in the same situation. Where is the mac love? It sucks being stuck this way.

I don't think this works with our phones
I rooted, installed clockwork, and flashed back down using that. Then did the ota back to dk28 with my newly working gps. It worked and I didn't need to use my mac.

Could you perhaps expand a little on this? When you say you flashed back down using that what do you mean?

Heimdall has, in general, been confirmed to work with Epic 4G phones. However I'm not sure if Samsung ever released a fixed (USB specification complaint) secondary bootloader for the Epic 4G. If they didn't then your phone will be unable to register itself with Darwin (OS X's kernel). If this is the case then perhaps try contact Samsung and ask them to release a non-faulty bootloader. I was the one who informed them of the initial problem, so they do listen. If they ask for system logs just tell them it's the same problem that was reported for the GT-I9000 so they already have a system log detailing the error.

You don't need the pit file just put the tar file under PDA and make sure only auto reboot is checked

I suggest you check the wiki. You will find odin + pit, the proper dk28, & good instructions.

Why go to dk28 when there is ec05 out? Try to flash a rom based on ec05. Also viper synergy is based on eb13 at the moment. Going g to dk28 is not a good idea. It was a test build. To many bugs compared to the builds we have now with the custom kernels

nice i wasnt sure if you could use the old roms on new software
Wiki has all the information that is needed.
Yes u can odin to anything at any time.
Some roms can run on higher modems than there built for (a dk28 rom on ec05 modem).
U really only to odin modems for upgrading, rom zips contain the rest.

I've recently run into an issue finding the original bootloaders (specifically Eclair boot.bin), and after searching for a few hours, NUSHOR pulled some for me and put them on dropbox, so I figured if anyone needs them (I needed them, as hopefully I'll be making a one-click Heimdall for Gingerbread and Froyo soon for all platforms) links are at the bottom! They have become hard to find!
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15148638/phonestuff/Bootloaders/FROYO_BOOTLOADERS_UCJI6.zip
This is for those of you who know how to flash them using Heimdall (IT IS NOT A FLASHABLE ZIP!)
Let me reiterate the point of this:
You *can* use the i9000 GB bootloaders on Froyo, however you cannot use them on Eclair or CM7
You *can* use the new AT&T GB bootloaders on Froyo and Eclair *AND* CM7
The purpose of this is to give those that need to RMA, or need to go to *complete* stock, a way to get the official AT&T bootloaders.
Don't flash these if you don't need them!
Happy flashing otherwise!
I did not realize that and was worried that somehow it would mess up my phone going to CM7 from i9000 ROMs.
Thankfully, there are real developers like designgears on this site to steer me in the right direction. I appreciate you dropping some knowledge on us!

You can't use Gingerbread bootloaders on CM7. I don't remember exactly what it screws up, but I remember some people tried it and had serious issues. Gingerbread bootloaders work with Samsung 2.2 ROMs, which is what designgears was saying (I assume).
I have no clue whether mine are downgraded, but I'm guessing no, i still show the i9000 screen as primary boot. I did use Odin to flash back to eclair, but pretty sure there were no bootloaders in the package. I have been running CM7 great! Maybe I downgraded, or the hardware lock on the sbl makes it okay (my i897 is model 1012, prob makes a dif). Dunno, but I like having an essentially pure Google phone with CM7, so i hope the problem never crops up for me!
In no way am I advocating that other captivate users listen to me. Listen to these devs, I'm just sharing my experience. Thank u for more clarification, and CM7 Platypus kernel rocks!

The CM dev have said it won't work, but I guess you're just lucky. Is your external sd mounted? I think that was an issue that was mentioned.
Sent from my Captivate
I just got an external sd, and it doesn't show up in my storage information. I really didn't know what was up with that, I just didn't really care, but now I do lol.
I'll see if oneclick works to downgrade the bootloaders, but it has not worked in the past.
I've had trouble making a package of my own with bootloaders: I've added them to the .tar, but it fails when it runs, so obviously just adding them isn't enough. What else needs to be done to make them actually flash through odin as a .tar? Or is adding them actually enough? Does my file fail because it contains the sbl, which I thought had a hardware lock on my model, and is that also why oneclick fails?
edit----oneclick did the trick! THANK YOU designgears!!! Now I should be able to use CM7 as it was intended.
If I'm currently on a JVH ROM, and wanted to be on CM7, I know what to do, but if I'm feeling lazy good I just technically just flash CM7 over it since I dont have an ext-Sd?
Or could I flash the above .zip to get my boot loaders back.

Yes, they are, but only for Froyo AFAIK. Also, if you wish to use CM7, you can't use them, although you can use the new Gingerbread ones from AT&T
So I can use this bootloader to get CM7 to work back on my phone if I am rooted on the stock rom?

Not sure what you mean by 'the stock ROM', but if you are on Gingerbread bootloaders, and you need / want CM7, your best option would be to follow the guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130879
The reason I say this is because more than likely, you will never need to flash the bootloaders I posted, as they will not support Gingerbread. Like I said in the first post, they are only if you need to RMA the phone, or return it to bone stock, otherwise the 'Unofficial' AT&T Bootloaders will be best for you, as they work on anything.
Edit: I didn't technically answer your question: Yes, you could use these for CM7, but it's typically best not to.
So I know Odin is generally the way everyone goes around here, but since I'm running a Mac I was wondering how reliable Heimdall is. I am running SRF 1.2, Genocide 1.1, and wanted to jump to the EF02 modem.
Can anyone confirm this is safe to do with Heimdall? Also if there are any instructions on how to do so I would greatly appreciate it.
Heimdall didn't work with our epics on a Mac. I've tried and I believe chris4g said its because something to do with the boot loaders

In your opinion, would I be running the chance of bricking my phone if I gave it a shot? Sorry if I sound a bit over worried, not having a pc (Odin) does that to you when its the only source of recovery.

I don't have a MAC, so I can't say for sure. It seems more reliable than Odin and it is more flexible in that it lets you flash individual components. I suppose if your not sure what you're doing, both Odin and Heimdall could be dangerous.
