So I know Odin is generally the way everyone goes around here, but since I'm running a Mac I was wondering how reliable Heimdall is. I am running SRF 1.2, Genocide 1.1, and wanted to jump to the EF02 modem.
Can anyone confirm this is safe to do with Heimdall? Also if there are any instructions on how to do so I would greatly appreciate it.
Heimdall didn't work with our epics on a Mac. I've tried and I believe chris4g said its because something to do with the boot loaders

So is there any alternative for Mac users out there? Again all I was looking to do is just try out the newest modem, but I know theres no way of simply flashing that.

In your opinion, would I be running the chance of bricking my phone if I gave it a shot? Sorry if I sound a bit over worried, not having a pc (Odin) does that to you when its the only source of recovery.

I don't have a MAC, so I can't say for sure. It seems more reliable than Odin and it is more flexible in that it lets you flash individual components. I suppose if your not sure what you're doing, both Odin and Heimdall could be dangerous.

I've been flashing roms and kernels for over a year now so I know what those are, what they do, and how to flash them. The latest version of Quantum Rom requires the DK17 modem, though, and I don't really know what that is. Where do I get the DK17 modem and do I just flash it like everything else?

A modem is the phone's baseband and (someone else correct me if I'm wrong) it controls how the phone interacts with GPS, WiMax and the CDMA network. As for how to flash it, see this thread (can't post links yet)

A modem is short for Modulator/Demodulator. It is the part of device communications that allow them to "talk".
Hey all, I have just been curious why there seems to be so little love for mac users. I understand that this is all difficult stuff to work with, so I cant complain too much, but I just wish that we had things like ODIN available to us as well. I recently switched to DK28 via the Update.zip (no ODIN) method and lost my GPS so I figured I would just go back to DI18 until the official OTA rolled out. Unfortunately this turned out to be impossible for me without ODIN (no one around me has a PC). Not trying to turn this into a sob story, just wondering if there are any others out there in the same situation. Where is the mac love? It sucks being stuck this way.

I don't think this works with our phones
I rooted, installed clockwork, and flashed back down using that. Then did the ota back to dk28 with my newly working gps. It worked and I didn't need to use my mac.

Heimdall has, in general, been confirmed to work with Epic 4G phones. However I'm not sure if Samsung ever released a fixed (USB specification complaint) secondary bootloader for the Epic 4G. If they didn't then your phone will be unable to register itself with Darwin (OS X's kernel). If this is the case then perhaps try contact Samsung and ask them to release a non-faulty bootloader. I was the one who informed them of the initial problem, so they do listen. If they ask for system logs just tell them it's the same problem that was reported for the GT-I9000 so they already have a system log detailing the error.

They are all there in supercurio's thread. Take three seconds to find it instead of asking to be spoon fed. Additionally, the kernel is for TESTING purposes. If you don't even know how to Odin a kernel or find a tar format kernel then you shouldn't be flashing test kernels. Learn how to take care of yourself or don't flash test kernels.

I've searched long and hard but i still haven't found one. Is there a method, zip, file, or anything that you can flash using CW3 in order to return to a stock, non-rooted, Sprint accepted version of Android? (EB13, DI18, etc) Basically, just a way to return to stock without the use of Odin. If not, could one be created?

i wasnt trying to do anything. just pure interest. but thanks for a solid answer!
Im posting this here because I've tried posting in other root forums and have no such luck and I've seen other people comment on this too. My question is does anyone know how to bypass the "failed to initialize protocol" error message in heimdall for mac or is there a better alternative to rooting as of this point? I've tried typing the commands into terminal and nothing has worked, I don't even has Kies installed on my computer. Any help or anyone that could point me in the right direction for rooting on a Mac would be helpful. I know there are plenty of us out there looking for a solution for our inferior computers
You can have your Mac dual boot
Or install something like parallels desktop and have Odin on that
My personal preference is to keep a cheap windows laptop for odin

Unless something has been released in the last couple of days heimdall does not support the s3 yet. I had to find a pc with windows to root using odin.
bj | SGH-I747M | Rogers | Rooted | ICS | CWR
yeah, most of us, including me, have not been able to successfully root the US version of the s3 using any verison of heimdall.
trust me ive tried EVERYTHING. downgrading to older versions, messing with the .kext files, trying to install thru terminal, trying the terminal fix to fix the issue with kies. Ive done everything.
I either get failed to initialise protocol, or claiming interface failed. Were going to have to wait for the makers of heimdall to update it.
For now, like most have said, the only alternative is to find a windows machine you can do it on. Ive yet to do it tho.

i think were pretty much screwed til heimdall adds support for the US versions of the s3. There was a guy in one of the stickies that got it to work, but he was unable to help with the issue we are having.
Yeah - Heimdall still doesn't support the U.S. S3's, but it does support the international.
The developer is working on it. (<- thank 'em)
I thought I could wait a few weeks for Heimdall compatibility before rooting, but I was weak and "needed" AdAway, TiBu, tether, general modding, etc... so I connected my S3 to a filthy dirty Windoze box w/ Odin to root it. Back to linux now... phew!
^ haha, made me laugh. I'm gonna sit tight till Heimdall gets working.

Yup, I had to go to good old TPB and got Parallels and Windows 7 to root my GS3 with Odin.
how did he do it
how is it possible that this guy got an AT&T i747 rooted using heimdall on the mac, then?

I, like most of you, have tried EVERYTHING, and I can't figure out how this video show a sucessful root using these methods, when the rest of us are stopped with the failed to initialise protocol error..

Thinking about doing this myself - did you run into any problems/irregularities? It seems a bit rash to not just wait for a real solution, but after two and a half years of no ads on my phone, I keep finding myself saying "what the f*ck is this ad doing here on this shiny new phone?!" hah. BTW I'm new here - hi all.
