Recieved my HD yesterday, and this is the symptom of the issue:
When the phone reaches its screen timeout (whether its 30 secs or 10 mins) period it the phone turns off completely. It is not possible to then turn the phone back on using the power switch or any other way. The only way the phone can be turned back on is to take the battery out and put it back in.
Initially i thought maybe it was the battery and somehow it didnt have proper connection with the copper contacts. However if i turn off the screen timeout off completely then the phone stays on and doesnt turn off. So as long as the phone doesnt go into power save mode or screen timeout its fine and stays on. Its also not the power switch as the switch works fine other wise.
I rang HTC support, spoke to some clueless call centre lady who tried to tell me it might be a proximity issue. I dont think it is as i dont have any issues when making or receiving calls. The problem is for some reason screen timeout causing the phone to completely shut down. I have searched on a few forums and cant seem to find anyone else with this issue.........FML
Forgot to add, i have also done the following:
- Reset to factory default
- Checked for udpates (get a message saying my phone is up to date)
- Made sure phone sim cover and battery cover are properly secured
Nothing has worked so far

So the switch turns the phone off and on again, or just off?
switch turns phone on and off any other time but after screen lockout kicks in it doesnt do anything, i have to take the battery out to turn the phone back on.
In a normal scenario if i want to power the phone down and then power it back up again then it is fine
Hope that makes sense
It really sounds like a software issue.
Is your DHD branded or unlocked?
Maybe try install some of the custom roms from arround the forum.I use LeeDroid 1.2 and it works like a charm.
Go to "ROM Development" thread. There are a few HOW-TOs on the top. There is always a risk u mess things up but it's small and from how it sounds, u don't have much of a choice anyway good luck
Its a branded "Orange" phone from the UK. I think im just going to return it and get a replacement and if i still have issues then ill try your suggestion thanks. Really disappointing, Desire HD seems to be riddled with issues.

I did post previously about this and I think I've stumbled onto a solution.
If you click on the ariel from the Today screen or anywhere else, it takes ages to switch off (show the X) BUT if you go over to the dialler screen (pess the phone button) and then click the ariel & turn off, it switches off in about 2 seconds !!!
That's what it does on my machine anyway - maybe others can confirm this behaviour.

Didn't work for me
Just tried that, but it still took around 5 secs for the popup menu to appear. Once it's popped up once though, it seems to then be selectable quite quickly.
I guess the real solution is to get a hardware button to turn it on/off!
Lee.
I just tried it again and it takes just as long as it did before. Damn !!
I wish somebody would figure this out !!

A workaround could be phone profiles, which are offered for example by Ultra Profiler 2.0 (http://www.mobilesolutions.ro/)
It offers the profile "Airplane", which switches off the phone immediately.
Unfortunately, it seems to be buggy. After switching between some profiles, it changes to a strange ring tone.
I also tried this, and it still takes ages
sorry any more tricks to try....
John
to turn it off quickly you could just throw it your hardest against the floor the harder it hits the floor the more faster the device will switch off.
but i wouldnt do this as it would be a waste of money
Funny you sould say that, as when it locks up or dose not do what i needed it to do i oftern think of using your super fast turn off mode
john
I think the reason for delays in switching off is that mobile phones send out a signal to the Providors transmitters to tell them its being switched off, so it needs to do that before it will turn itself off.
I believe the phone switches itself off the moment you open the sim door cover; there is that little microswitch there...
man i hate it.. if my screen goes out for even a few seconds, i have to yank the battery and restart the phone. i realized the phone isnt turning off when it happens tho, cause it happens during calls when im talking to someone, theyll still be there, but i wont be able to turn the screen back on, and even after they hang up its still dead.. and i made a test call to my phone and it rang like 8 times before going to voicemail, so im sure the phone is still on when becomes unresponsive. if its plugged in it wont do this, so i have to leave it plugged in 24/7.. when im driving i either have to leave the screen on 'never turn off' or restart my phone every time i wanna check my directions.. i had this problem on JB5 and madaco R1 and now R2.. does anyone else know anything about this?
Sounds more or less like a hardware issue.
Maybe get samsung to look at it?
Sounds like a pretty serious issue, and not something that I've seen commonly reported. Definitely not fit for purpose, I'd consider sending it back for a replacement.
It might be nothing to do with it, but I have heard that some cases and screen covers can interfere with the operation of the proximity switch that turns off the screen during a call. If this is covered the screen will not turn on again after being switched off.
My phone died today and when I got home to charge it, I noticed that after pressing the sleep/power button, the screen turns off and then about a second later comes back on. It does this regardless of if it's plugged in or not. I took it into Sprint and they're going to give me a new one when they get their paws on some. Right now I'm just looking for ANY possible work around to the problem.
I've done a factory reset, added a pattern/code, and installed NO LOCK but nothing can keep the screen from coming back on after pushing the power button...
(I also had another problem with the phone, the camera has a HOT PINK tinge about 85% opacity. I can go without the camera for a few weeks until the new one gets here but any help with that is very welcome)

Everything is stock.
Mine had a similar problem when I was on 2.1 I would charge the phone overnight and at some point in time the phone would turn the screen on and not turn back off. Or sometimes it would sitting on my desk and just randomly turn the screen on. After I upgraded to 2.2 it stopped. I never could figure out what was causing it to wake.
Are you using ChoiceDialer+? There is a known bug where the screen will not shut off after making a call with ChoiceDialer, though a reboot does fix it.
has anyone faced the phone switching off even when it's screen locked? This happened a few times to me.
1st scenario is when my phone is in a waist pouch which is a little tight for this model. when i take it out of the pouch, i either find it off or waiting at the sim unlock screen. this is caused by pressing the power button accidentally.
2nd scenario is after charging over night, i wake up to find the phone asking me to key in sim unlock pin (it will not be completely off because whenever charger is plugged in, it will power up). The phone was screen locked before i charge it and i did not touch the power button by accident unlike scenario 1.
which ever the scenario, by right the power off button shouldn't work whilst in screen lock right?
The same scenarios happend to me, sometimes more than once a day. Very annoying.
I too have this issue, especially the overnight charging one, which is annoying because then the alarm fails to go off!!! After convincing 2 other people to get the Trophy 7 they also experience this.
I called HTC support in the UK yesterday and all they could suggest to me was that I reset the phone settings, which I've done, and of course ended up needing to put all my settings back in which is extremely frustrating when I expect that it won't fix anything.
I really would recommend calling HTC support in your country and logging a call, because the guy told me that I was the first to report it.
You can get the phone numbers from the htc website, which i cannot post the URL to since I'm a new user, but I'm sure you can find it. Go to "Support" -> "Customer Service" -> "Support by hotline"
Of course, you could not call them to report the issue, but then they'll think that I'm the only user in the world with the problem and not actually resolve it!!! It's going to take you about 10mins and they'll keep talking to you about windows mobile 6.5, instead of windows phone, but the more calls logged = greater chance of resolution.
I've had the turning of when it's in my pocket, but i've never had it turn of overnight when charging.
at least not that i've noticed
Whilst experimenting with android on my touch pro from the very beginning when you couldn't enter a sim code, i've removed it and i'm to lazy to set a new one
All the problems (screen freeze of crazy dancing icons of phone shutting down) solved after FLASHING newest WWE ROM from this forum. Maybe helps, but U have to decide and do it yourself or not.
This has happend MANY times on my trophy aswell.. I ended up turning off the sim lock code (That way the phone starts up again after boot and your alarms etc works)
Yup, I've had the "pocket" thing also happen to me, more than once in the same day... quite frustating.
Qtek S200 (HTC Prophet) After ROM update, its now shutting down whilst in sleep mode
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but recently I upgraded my s200's ROM using the CD utility that came with it. Its now running Build 14928.2.2.0 of WM5.
Before the ROM update it has never done it once.
Some people said they got the problem when it went into lock screen, my lock screen is fine. It will only do it when the phone is in sleep mode, if i disable the "power off" timout setting then its absolutly fine aslong as i dont press the power button.
Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem?
Somebody did mention about flashing the rom from one of OS's on this site, but all the ones I have found contain dead rapidshare links.
Any help appreciated
Thanks
My solution on Trophy is simple, using a Casemate case on my phone. It makes the off button so stiff, that it's hard to shut off.
I guess I never realized why it was such a pain in the case to shut off... this MUST be the reason. Also, since I now have two Trophy's (one for developing roms), this other one I just bought has been through hell, and it's difficult to half press the camera button to focus. The Casemate case I have on my good Trophy makes it far harder to press the camera button, but my year old Trophy that I've always had doesn't suffer from any problems with its camera button.
This is the newer version of the Casemate case I was using on my HTC Trophy. I don't know if this will help you with your older phone, but maybe Casemate makes a case for it. Since it's an older phone, it will be difficult.
its not a persisten issue.
but for last 2 days when i plug the phone in the screen turns on and stays on.
when i unplug it the screen turns off
when i turn the screen off it turns right back on almost instantly
its a fresh install nand rom havent killed the battery yet.
and yesterday it started working normally again for no apparent reason.
also about same time the touch screen started flipping out.
it would get "uncalibrated?" and when i push one button it types 4-10 random characters on the screen
but now its all back to normal somehow.
just posting it here maybe someone knows the pattern and its a hardware issue of some kind.
would like to know if i should look into getting another Hd2
I can not say for sure if it is a hardware issue, but I would assume it is if I was you and see about doing an exchange to be safe. i mean what if your HD2 works fine for a good long while but then al of a sudent it starts acting up again but worse and you or out of warranty then.
If you go to "Settings ---> Applications ---> Development" you have a box called "Stay Awake". If you check this box, the screen wont turn off when charging. You can see the description under the box. Maybe someone just played with your settings.
