Trading Google Nexus One for Desire Z - Nexus One General

As the title says, I am looking for an HTC Desire Z that works on Rogers / Fido / Telus / Bell (in Canada); AT&T in the US.
If you have one and want to arrange a trade, or just have questions, send me a PM.

Is this basically the Tmobile G2?

other than frequency bands and one ROM won't go on the other (can't remember how that shakes out)..

That's right. The G2 is basically the same phone as the Desire Z; although the G2 won't work on my network if I understand it correctly (or the 3G won't work at least).

Sorry, I was a bit unclear. I meant they've been flashing either G2 ROMs on a desire Z or vice versa, can't remember which.
Both phones will work on GSM networks.. Bell's desire Z has the hardware for At&t 3g while the G2 does not, but you could pop a sim in an unlocked G2 and get edge speeds on at&t. i wouldnt do that though

Yea I don't think I could live without at least 3G speeds on my cell. I travel alot and have my fair share of Edge only.
Why are you ditching your Nexus One when Gingerbread is within reach?

Maybe craigslist is more realistic.

I'll be waiting for it on my N1 too... I can be patient. AOSP is great for some, but until I see what is actually in Gingerbread I'll stick with the cyanogenmod Froyo.

I posted on kijiji as well. Nobody uses craigslist where I am.
I'm really not displeased with my nexus one, I just prefer a physical keyboard.

try in the marketplace here. be prepared to add money to your end of the deal as the Z goes for about $550. Part of me wants to get the Z cause I do miss having a keyboard, and it is faster, but my N1 still runs beautifully and I get to play with gingerbread first.
good luck on finding someone to trade with.

Bye Bye G1

Just wanted to say bye, and thanks, to everyone in the G1 Forum.
I've now sold my G1 and got a desire (which is awesome and dare I say it 10x better than the G1).
Thanks to everyone who has given me support, SuperD, Cyanogen and anyone else's rom I've used.
I'm waiting for a US release so I can use 3G or maybe even 4G. Hope you have fun with your desire.

but isn't it a GSM phone? capable of international use and unlock purchase? If so, you shouldn't have any problem getting 3g with your service provider.

USA 3G bands are "special." With the Desire you can't get 3G with either AT&T or T-Mobile.
Just to let you guys know, apparently it's coming out in Australia on some network that uses the same 3G Bands as the USA.

£130 on ebay, pretty decent as I didn't sell the SD Card with it.
I had intended to sell the 16gb SD Card, Phone (Boxed) and Motorola s9 wireless earphones.
The buyer wanted me to end the auction early and offered £130 for the phone only, guess I got lucky.
Same here, i got my Desire on Saturday and couldn't be happier with it!
Though i'm a sucker and gave my G1 to my dad, keep it in the family and all
Gonna sell my Hero though, i saw they still fetch around £180 on ebay...

Will It work on AT&T?

I was wondering if the Droid 2 Global will work on AT&T bcuz i read on ebay on an auction for the verizon version that it will work on any GSM network as long as its not in the US. Can anyone clarify this?
Well, seeing as AT&T operates in the US, the answer would be no, it will not work on AT&T.
People are working on it, but it will not currently work on AT&T.

buy yourself a desire z from bell canada

canada/usa users opinion plz :-)

ok, i am pretty happy with my x10a but will be travelling to key west florida in about a month. what id like to know is whats the latest android device in the usa with a hard keyboard? ive heard about the droid global but not much. im asking because i am from canada and we are always 6+ months behind cell technology so id like to pickup a new device as good or better than the x10. i do a massive amount of texting which is why im thinking of the hard keyboard option. i am also with rogers canada so i would need advice as to what phones would even be compatible on their network, and obiously be able to sim unlock it.
i look forward to your guys opinion, as im lost on devices outside of canada thanks guys!

The U.S. is 2 years behind. So you are lucky!
You are probably better off getting advice from people in Europe/Asia/Middle East. They get all the good stuff before us is North America.

For 3G, at&t and Rogers use the same band, I think 800/850/1900. T-mobile uses a different band, I think 900/1700. Most European/Asian/Middle Eastern countries use 2100. South America and Australia, use a mix of both depending on the operator.

Yeah, definitely SIM unlocked so you can switch between Rogers and at&t.
so i guess im at the point in finding out if att sells anything better than the x10. since i do still enjoy my x10 it would have to be equal or better in specs imo.

You could go into a AT&T store while you are here, and get a free "GO" phone which is a monthly prepaid thing for your stay. And get a Google Voice number before you leave.
Leave the X10 connected and set it to forward the calls to the Google Voice (I don't know if Rogers would charge you for this or you would need a US google number or not) and link the Google Voice to your temporary Go phone. Depending on how much you were willing to pay, you could get a free flip phone or pay for anything up to a blackberry.
You would need access at least once to a PC after getting the phone to reconfigure Google to transfer the calls and SMS the phone with the texted version of any voice message.
Even Walmart has these too: http://www.walmart.com/ip/AT-T-Nokia-C3-Prepaid-GoPhone-Blue/15140306
the HTC desire Z seems like a viable option!
To be honest rogers had the x10 before att got it. They aren't that far behind the north American curve, but if you want a good phone, get a bell desire z. Then unlock it. The bell one has a front facing camera and it'll work on rogers. Plus it has the hard fold out keyboard.

G2 alternative! Tell me what you think

Hey everyone,
(TLDR: go to last paragraph)
I was recently on this part of XDA asking about how to root the HTC Merge. Upon realizing that Verizon is an evil company from hell and that even unlocking its SIM will only allow me to use Edge, I had to give it up to someone who could use it and take care of it.
Now I'm in a dilemma. I currently use the HTC Fuze (Raphael/Touch Pro) and I truly want to switch to android really badly. I was looking at the Desire Z, but upon playing with it (Tmo's G2), I realized that I did not like the hinge mechanism and the optical pad mechanism. I played with the G2 for a good hour (well, until the store employees started giving me the stink eye) and I thought I would get used to these quirks, but I didn't.
So finally, the question is, if you could not get the G2 or Desire Z and want to get a phone as close to it as possible to it on a GSM network, what would your choice be?
Cheers!
Wait for dual core phones.
Nothing, that's why I have it. There's not really any other decent options with a hardware keyboard. The hinge isn't bad once you realize it wasn't designed to be stiff, and I *rarely* use the optical trackpad (like, maybe once a month, other than to wake/unlock).
I knew the hinge was not designed to be stiff. I had issues with it because playing with it, i happen to flp the hinge close on my fingers a few times because of the movement of handling the z. BUT, I must stress this, this is nothing but my opinion and my quirks so I am in no way shape or form saying the desire Z sucks.
The Mytouch 4g is similar spec wise but lacks a hardware keyboard. It also runs a sense ui rom but you can change that of course if you plan on rooting the phone. Another option is the Mytouch Slide 3g. I just upgraded mine to the G2 but the slide is still a nice phone. It isn't as high end as the g2, but I found it runs well and did most of what I wanted it to. It's keyboard slides straight up and down, it doesn't pop out in anyway. It does also have an optical trackpad but I got used to it (I came from a G1 with a trackball). It can do flash lite but it needs to be on a sense rom to do so. You can probably find one for $150-$200 on craigslist or ebay. I'd recommend the G2 over the slide but if the keyboard really irks you then maybe check out the slide.
I think the best alternative to the G2 is the MyTouch 4G. It has a front-facing camera, which is a nice feature.
Also I just saw the Cliq 2. Didn't look to much into it but it looks like a high end keyboard android phone.

1) the ones in the store get mistreated by everyone who comes in.
2) the ones in the store are connected to a spring loaded tether.
3) the ones in the store get mistreated by everyone who comes in.
ahah yes i know dhkr, but because it gets mistreated by everyone who comes in, it gives an indication of how the phone will perform years down the line.
and yeah, that tether is a massive pain the rear.
Unfortunately, if you want a hardware keyboard, your options are extremely limited, no matter what carrier you're looking at.
If the keyboard isn't a factor, the MyTouch 4G isn't *bad* (my wife has one), but it's significantly more plasticky than the G2. Of course there's the Vibrant /4G, but I personally don't care for Samsung's smartphones. They're typically way too plasticky, and they have horrid post-sale support (witness the lack of Froyo for the Galaxy S line, for instance).
What about the Vision variant that has a slide instead of the Z hinge?
HTC Vision? I still haven't seen it. If it's the same specs, i'll take a gander at it.
EDIT: I thought the Vision is the Desire Z (hinge and all) I was never aware of a variant that is a slide out.
you could get the Cliq 2, but you probably won't get much xda support.
yeah, the cliq 2 is interesting but motoblur is the ultimate deal breaker. I think I'll just have to get the Desire Z. I heard the European version does not support 3G on american bands, so if i want full use of the desire Z in both Thailand and the US, i'll have to get the US version right? (the unbranded one I mean, not G2)
EDIT: P.S I love you avatar

I don't thing HTC is selling the American Desire Z unlocked. I know that Telus (a Canadian carrier) has the Desire Z and you could buy it unlocked from them. I think Telus and AT&T have the same 3G bands. Or you could get the G2, but the only other carrier with the same 3G bands as T-Mobile US is WIND mobile in Canada.

Well, apparently amazon claims that there's a NAM version that is unbranded. I don't trust it too much, but it has a model number and all that is different from the european version. I personally hate having carrier branding on my phone and especially carrier "customization" on it. I was hoping to get my hands on something that I will be able to make full use of in both countries.
besides. the cliq 2 looks like the The Thing (from Fantastic 4) would use.... hahaha
EDIT: Forgot to add. I got my hands on the Merge (the verizon one) for a few days when I tried to get it unlocked, but since I sold it to someone who uses Verizon, I can tell you that I'd take the merge over the Desire Z any day because it was physically the perfect phone for me. The slide out keyboard, the physical looks and the heft of it was perfect for me. Too bad it was for Verizon and you know what Verizon is like.....

If the Amazon listing is straight from HTC I would trust it. And the Merge looks like a great phone. If only it was on T-Mobile
if it was on Tmobile, i'd snap it up so fast it would look like the road runner is going backwards at lightspeed.
but I still need to make sure I can get the Desire Z that can use 3G in both the US and asia..... is there a way to find that out?

Which 3G bands are you referring to? If you want Tmobile 3G you have to get the G2. If you want AT&T 3G and international 3G get the AT&T Desire Z.

can i use this on tmobile?

i have a mytouch 4g and it was kool at first. but lately, i only use it for a few sites and barely use anything else. so i'm thinking of getting an xperia play so i can make more use of my phone. so my question is, can i use this phone for t-mobile? i went to sony style and they only have the verizon one and the guy who works there said i can't use it for tmobile. thanks
