I took my MyTouch 4G out of my pocket a couple of days to find that the power button is extremely hard to press down and it no longer "clicks." It still functions, just not properly.
I've had my MyTouch 4G for 31 days, it is still under the 1 year warranty.
The phone has had a case and a screen protector on it since I bought it. I have never dropped it and it has never even been close to water.
I can't find any videos or tutorials on taking the phone apart so I don't feel comfortable investigating why the button is stuck. If you know of any tutorials, I'd be interested in checking them out.
Is a stuck power button enough to warrant sending it in for a replacement?
If so, I'm worried that the replacement might come with an inferior screen or dings/scratches. I know a lot of you have experience exchanging phones with T-Mobile and I was wondering if this is a valid fear or not. The phone also has the superior screen and I'd rather have a stuck power button than a faded out screen.
After describing my problem to a T-Mobile online representative I received this response:
"^Keenan J: I see; seeing as it is a physical issue on the phone it cannot be replaced under warranty unfortunately."
"****** ******: Even if the physical issue is caused through no fault of my own?"
"^Keenan J: Unfortunately that is the case; if we are to exchange the phone and the defect is found, the warehouse that ships/prepares the phones will charge you full price of the device."
This doesn't seem right to me.

So they'll replace a phone under warranty for say, a software issue, but not a physical issue? Something definitely doesn't seem right here.
brick it. send it back. did that twice with my g1 when the buttons got old.

That doesn't seem right. I would call them back. Do keep in mind, though, if you exchange it and the deem nothing wrong, you will be charge full replacement cost. Personally, I would take it to a store and show it to someone.
I've had three replaced for that reason, and my nephew has had 4. Its quite annoying, but you walk into a t-mo store an d they take care of you.
The Nexus One has a similar button and that button also is fragile. Someone took one apart to show the design flaw and you can find that on google or on one of the nexus forums.
my power button just stopped working. waiting for a call back from tmobile.
had same issue....sold the phone for a nexus s plus $50.....Told the buyer about it and he didnt notice anything wrong. Ended up trading the nexus s for a white mytouch 4g plus $200....Made out pretty well, only issue is I'm going to send back the phone to replace the screen.
I am alittle worried that it will happen again, tempted to sell this one for $320,and just buy a g2. Currently waiting for my hd2 to come back from htc, think it needs to have the OS flashed again, was a soft brick...
ya im gonna have to use my hd2 running android cuz tmobile had me remove battery and the phone wont turn back on. sending me a new one free of charge.

had the same problem but the customer rep told me they dont want me to take out the battery cuz then i wont be able to start the phone again?
how did you get them to send you a new one free of charge?
its a shame that a phone as nice as the mt4g has these kinds of defects (power button, bad screen, etc..) and all these stories of people replacing them
has anyone with the power button issue opened up their mt4g to see what the problem inside is? i want to do that but dont wanna risk not turning it back on yet if the problem cant be fixed
this will be my 4th phone. got 2 with bad screens third one good screen. he just said hed waive the shipping its gonna be a refurbed one.
has anybody been able to figure out a solution to this power button problem?
power button broke and my phone finally froze so i had to pull the battery and cant turn it back on
dont want to void the warranty yet by disassembling it unless theres a proven fix method
its under warranty do an exchange.
you could probably take it apart and reseat it. but t-mo has always just replaced mine without giving me any problems.
Yea my power button doesn't click like it customer its annoying I have 3 mt4gs and only one have the power button malfunction never had a screen issue. Oh an my first mytouch 4g shorted out was smoking.

found a work-around for turning the phone on if your power button does not work
if the mt4g is off, plug it into the wall charger, after you see the "charging" light and light in the optical pad, press and hold the "home" button for a few seconds (5-10) and the phone should boot into recovery just like that, at which point you can reboot from the recovery menu
nexus one had tons of broken power button if you search google. the power buttons for many HTC phones weren't designed durably to perform screen wake/lock stress. knowing that, I have been using trackball wake on both my nexus1 and mytouch4g. no problem so far.
if your button's broken, called in they refuse to replace. just hang up try another rep till they replace your handset. you have to know how these call center reps work. they go through troubleshooting tree program on their computer screen. if you had bad luck end up in a tree branch says "customer's problem", the rep can't help you much. you need to some how get to where their computer screen says "replace part". I usually call in flat out tell them device doesn't power on up front, no screen no nothing. that will get their monitor to say replace part the fastest. in the process, they may ask you to remove battery, press this and that buttons, etc. they are all waste of time, you don't really have to do it. when they ask, just wait 10 seconds and tell them yep, pulled battery didn't work. knowing these call center reps are making a bit above minimum wages, they aren't really tech guys, they are computer monitor instruction reading dummies. many times, these people are in india. they most likely have never put their hand on the devices they are supporting.
And the strategy works for all kinds of tech support/customer support. be careful only use for end user consumer stuff. for IT, business level support, the techs know their $hit. tell what you know truthfully will get you better result. you paid big bucks for it, they usually don't jerk you around.
Interesting, but the problem is that I bought this phone from somebody else, so they might not let me exchange it

Mine is pushed in all the way, but it still works and I can feel the click and hear it too, but it's inward so that bothers me too. I'm probably going to try my luck sometime next week, or when it feels like it's about to mess up.
I just noticed my volume rocker is broken. The down button doest have much spring its original springiness to it and although it still recognizes my presses...both now functions as the volume-up button.
Anyone know how to fix this. Will my local sprint store fix it ? If so...would I need to unroot?
i dont need a signature
You need to run the ruu and turn it back in to sprint for a replacement
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
This is not something that they can just fix? I don't have warranty on it.
i dont need a signature
quick followup
i just realized if i RUUd my phone, and they aren't able to fix my volume rocker, i wouldn't be able to do get into the bootloader again to re-root my phone.
is there any other way to get into the bootloader without the down-volume button?
I don't see why they wouldn't be able to fix it

it's possible that there's permanent damage on the device that cannot be fixed...and since i don't have insurance for it, it's not gonna be replaced.
i just want to make sure i have all my bases covered.
wow, just came back from sprint...and to my surprise, they decided to replace my phone for the standard $35 non-insured fee. that was kinda nice. i hope i don't get a refurb though.

Yes sir a refurbished model is what you get, they wanted to do that to me when their network was slow they said it was my 33 day old phone I paid full price for(it wasn't the phone lol), they see it as you give them a brandnew "damaged"phone and you get a working refurb....

Hey Guys
I just wanted to know,if someone of you got the same experience than me!
Today my Volume +- button popped out and I cant put it back beacause the sluggy glew stuff under it doesn't hold it anymore!
I mean what is that..
So this phone only gots two mechanical buttons and I lose one of 'em ?! Hahahaha thats so poor!
Do you think I can get it to repair or replace the phone?!
I still got warranty and I pay for it every month... so what do you think?
Anyone had this problem too?!
Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor english
Contact HTC. They will probably issue a replacement for you.

Same thing happened to me. I'm with Orange UK and they replaced it under guarantee, but it cost me £50! They classed it as "Accidental Damage"
Hi, I had same problem, it came off but luckily I didn't lose it and super-glued it back on which is ok but not perfect, but I see you can get replacements on Ebay for about £11.00 delivered from Hong Kong. And its a different fixing so looks like it would not come off again. Think I will get one myself.
that sounds bad.
suggest using a case to prevent this.
Mine was in a case, it was the constantly taking off the battery cover to replace the battery (due to crap battery life) that made it come off.
Happened to me, DO NOT contact your carrier. Get straight onto HTC, it is a hardware defect and you are covered for 2yrs with them. Mine was picked up the day after I phoned them and returned fully functional for free three days later..
Here are some numbers to phone..

You shouldn't have accepted this! That's a bit like a door coming off your car (extreme I know) then your dealer claiming accidental damage.
Try and deal with the manufacturer directly if you can.

Disgusting, write back to them saying you've done some research and there is no way you should have been charged as HTC them selves fix it for free and say you want your money back or will go through trading standards. Either way you will win.
Well I brought it to my O2 store today ( it's where I have bought the phone )
They said they're gonna send it to HTC. They'll prolly repair it. But this guys gave me everything ( battery and all covers back home )
If they're gonna say I gotta pay something to repair this thing, I'm gonna fire up the hell for them.
I mean, that not supposed to be... I have probably opened the battery cover only 3-5 times. Isn't it built to last for longer
Would HTC still fix this if you are rooted and have a custom ROM?
Better to take it back as u got it tbh! What i always do so dont get asked crap n saves any hassle!

I unrooted it and made S-ON... to avoid any stupid questions
Even tho they shouldnt make problems, cos how can a custom rom brake a button
My volume up button is now broken, but have no time to go for replacement yet. The app Quick Settings is really useful for me now. It replaces the long press on search button to a customizable control panel.
This will do a job.
iMHO, volume buttons are the worst about this phone. Second worst thing is the battery cover.

Yeah.
Well I actually need my phone daily as navigation system and stuff. I really miss it right now got such a crappy Nokia 61...sumthing.
Well... you are right. the volume button feels so cheap and the backcovers are the worst I have seen on a phone yet. they dont even look nice.
The Sensation looks way better.
My volume + but is actually quite stiff and you have to press it that bit harder to get it to work.
Shall I leave it for now I'm not too bothered if it does break then I can get it replaced?

I accidently bent/snapped mine as I thought I was pulling out the battery compartment. It was dark and I was tired
Followed advice on here and rung HTC and my network 3 who both said I'd have to pay for repair.
Looking at getting the part on eBay however the delivery is estimated between 12 and 35 days! The price is a joke as well, £12...but it's more the delivery times from Hong Kong that I don't want.
Does anyone know any alternative ways to source a volume button please? Any quicker ways? Thanks
Unfortunately those seem to be the only ways unless you can find a local dealer of them. Try a phone repair shop.
I have read something about guarantee and software mods. When it's a hardware problem, that can't be caused by the software it isn't necessary to unroot and so on. So when they say, they won't repair it because you lost your guarante, you can assort on your right.
But I recommend to unroot and so on to avoid any problems with HTC.
Same to me guys, was very hangover and tried to replace battery but i removed the volume "-" instead ehhe
i'm on chat with htc right now.
They say that will send somebody to pick up the phone , analyze the problem and they will see if everything is under guarantee or they will estimate the cost ... something that i can or can't accept, anyway they will send back me the phone in likely 2 weeks with a cost of 20€ for the expedition .
hi guys,
i need your help with touch problem...
after END key long press the touch is NOT working
only then...
it happends in WM and Android
what can i do?
Harware issue with touch panel ribbon (behind end key) or button not releasing fully. do a search in HD2 forum as quite a few threads with info on this.
Had the same problem.
This is a HTC screw up.
The ribbon that connects the touch screen digitizer runs under the power button.
over time it wears off.
you might get it temporarily working by bumping your phone against your hand which releases the power button from the wire. (it's won't be visible when it happens).
I ruined the vibrating feature by doing this over time.
Had my HTC replaced with a new/refurbished from TMO-US for $5 (i had the monthly warranty plan that cost $6-7 per month).
If you still have a warranty then they will replace it.
Insist you want the same phone, if that is what you want).
otherwise they will try to push you to a newer model and only cover part of the cost.
I had to talk to 4-5 representatives till i found one that was willing to just get me a replacement for the $5 shipping charge rather than paying for a newer model.
Also when you send back the phone REVERT TO STOCK.
The Tmo guy asked me that question and i was sincere to tell him that i had android.
He told me that as long as i shipped the defective one back with stock rom, nobody will care and there won't be a problem.
otherwise they will find out and contact you for the additional costs.
Hope that helps.
good luck
If you really push the end key down and let the screen turn off on its own and then press another key besides end it should work. I've been having the same problem and I watched a video from "emissary44" on youtube that said if you really push it down it will work. I was wondering if anyone could answer this for me since it pertains to this issue. Is there any way to go into the phone's hardware, like actually opening it up, and moving the end key from the digitizer's ribbon? My father is exceptionally skilled with these tasks and if that can fix it I may have him take care of it.
Pressing it harder makes it worse. (i had made mine so bad that if you pressed it, it was a nightmare to get the digitizer to work again)
The "let it turn off and turn back on using another button" method works if the ribbon not too worn off or the END button not too sticky (if dirt is the issue).
As for opening it, if you have someone who is skilled, understands the importance of using the proper tools to open it, as well as protective gear (to protect the phone rather than the person), dissect the phone and repair the issue, then by all means you can.
In order to get to the END button you have to take apart 100% of the phone )
There will be no ribbon part or screw on the phone you won't have to remove in order to get to it. (even remove the screen itself).
It is a nightmare in all ways and do not recommend it in any way.
The chances of bricking it from the slightest mistake is too high if you don't know what you are doing.
The END button has always been that phone's Achilles' heel and the reason that HTC removed all hard keys from the majority off the phones that came after the HD2
Even so, you cannot remove the button in any way. you can only repair it.
The power button in vital for turning the phone ON as well as going into bootloader.
For everything else, it can be omitted.
While turned on (when i had the issue) i trained myself to NEVER touch that button.
I had a sleep mode soft key in the notification panel for whenever i wanted to turn the screen off.
I would always turn the screen back on using one of the other buttons.
There was a point i went a whole month without having to press it.
Warranty for the HD2 was the second time in my life i ever paid for warranty
Glad it paid off for something.

I have no warranty any more and the repair cost is about 200 USD
I don't buy phones from my cell provider cause they are thiefs...
BUT i might buy a new HTC Sensation for 450 USD on sunday... didnt like the EVO 3D it gave me a headack after 2 min!!! and the sellsman told me that the SGS2 has many screen issues (didnt asked him ferther - i dont like sansung anyway) so I gess that the Sensation is the best option atm...
I'm not happy to do it, the HD2 is the BEST phone i've ever owned...
it's really hard for me
you can always learn the "Don't press the END button" technique.
As i said, i went a whole month doing that (there is a week learning curve but you get used to it).
Worst. you can always try selling it on EBAY.
make sure you mention the little issue though.
Even so, experienced techs wouldn't mind getting their hands on it.
Many even buy phones with broken screens.
Yours shouldn't be a problem selling eventually.

I've had my RAZR M for about 2 months now, so far, its been a fantastic phone!
Over the past few weeks, the earpiece speaker quality has been degrading, up to the point now where its got a severe buzz to it, almost like the speaker is blown. I have to turn the volume down when making calls just to hear the person on the other end clearly without distortion.
Anyone else have this problem? Is the speaker available anywhere as a replacement item? I'd rather not go through the hassle of getting it repaired/replaced by Verizon (I hear they give refurbished phones as replacements, right?).
Thanks!
Sorry I didn't see this post before,
Yes I have the same issue, exactly!
Been meaning to take it in to have it looked at but haven't yet, have you done anything about it yet?
I used to be able to tap the back of the phone with my hand to get it cleared up but even that isn't working any more.
Ha ha... I had this same issue on a straight out the box M... which also made me get a replacement which also got me root and an unlocked boot loader... I knew I wasn't unmoral and had some values................

Mine got so bad last week that I took it back to Verizon.... Told the rep what the problem was and he just put in the order for replacement..... Never even cared to listen to it. I know it's a reconditioned one but it only has to get me to October for my upgrade.
