After receiving the fascinate on release day, I, along with all of you have been waiting patiently (ahem) for the Froyo drop. After watching these forums and trying to learn all I could, I tried every combination that has been modded or developed here to help satisfy the need for something better than stock. I wanted to thank all of you who have been working on different things to help make this phone better in the absence of OEM support. A lot of the things delivered did make the phone better, but I always kept having to load another work around to do something I was used to doing on my old droid 2. Today, after playing with a Droid X, I decided to go ahead and dump the fascinate in favor of the X. Perhaps a mistake, but for now, I don't think so....my empty anticipation has dissipated until I start wanting gingerbread on the X. From all of my hours of watching, reading and learning from you all, it seems like the support is just there from Moto and I've never felt that from Samsung. If things work out like they normally do for me, you should be getting Froyo tomorrow thanks to me getting rid of mine. This is my first post in XDA, as I usually spend my time searching and reading to learn from the experts and I wanted to take the chance to say thank you before I start spending my time in the droid threads.
paid full price for a dx??
Okay?
It'll probably be out soon you know.. lots of Galaxy S phones are getting one way or another now. Were bound to get an official release soon. Good luck with the DX.
As for paying full price.. I paid retail for my Fascinate. I had an OG Droid prior. I plan on purchasing all my phones straight up from here on out. Screw contracts..

I played with both the Fascinate and the Incredible while at best buy. The Fascinate just felt like a better phone to me when using both. I'm happy with my purchase. The Incredible is a great phone though, great dev community. Enjoy your phone!
The Incredible is a fantastic phone, with one fatal flaw: its absolutely terrible GPU. I had one after owning the Droid 1, right before the Fascinate came out, and while it was tempting to switch to the Fascinate in general once they announced its release date was inside my 30-day return period (better hardware specs all-around), the graphics performance was what absolutely cinched it.
I remember trying to run on the Incredible... I think it was Asphalt 5 (though this goes for plenty of other 3D-intensive games I can't specifically remember) and it was like playing a slideshow most of the time.
Meanwhile, the Droid 1, despite its almost half-speed CPU compared to the Incredible, was able to smoothly run any game I threw at it.
not me.
Not me,
I got the Fascinate for it's hardware....
When we do get Froyo, that will just add to it's goodness!!!

Same here, the incredible was an option, but it is basically a redone droid eris. While decently powerful the fascinate was the better choice, even with 2.1.

I totally respect your decision, but I imagine it will be one you regret. I think people forget that we have only been waiting for Froyo a little more than three months. The droid x waited this long also. Other phones have waited much longer for promised updates.
Btw: As someone already pointed out, you call a locked bootloader better support?

I second this. I got my Fascinate from Craigslist and will never again buy a phone on contract.
As far as Froyo, if the update is half-assed (Droid Eris style), I'll be installing a nice clean Froyo rom the friendly neighborhood developers again.
The Froyo upgrade for the Droid 1 was actually pretty amazing performance-wise, but that's neither here nor there.
And the Droid X took a bit over two months to get Froyo. We've already been waiting three and a half months.
So while the Fascinate is a great phone as-is, from an objective point of view, the upgrade wait is unjustified and I feel buyers have every right to be disappointed -- especially when the manufacturer just launched a phone running 2.3.
I think the incredible is just a tad more than a re done fascinate. That's a little bit of a understatement. The dev community is flying on that phone.
Edit: flacyn. You are exactly right. I will agree locked bootloader doesn't mean no support. Just no support from modders. And launching a gingerbread phone while your flagship line sits on eclair is dissapointing.

Just wondering....
Theres really nothing exciting going on with the Droid X as far as development. In contrast, I can flash a new ROM or kernal onto my Vibrant once a day.
Im not being disrespectful, but whats wrong with the Droid X? It seems like a nice platform.
Because it has a locked bootloader my friend...
What about bootstrap or whatever? I flashed Liberty onto my significant other's phone using that method.
well theres a couple of things. theres the locked bootloader but also some other things like gingerbread coming out. most rom dev's are shifting gears and waiting to get a good GB rom out for their next release. theres also Liberty 2.0 that was just released, should be released for non-donors in the next day or two. im a huge liberty fan so this is an exciting time for me.
Just give it a bit while devs switch gears from froyo to GB and there should be a whole host of new stuff coming out soon.
yeah that is probably the biggest thing. there is only so much you can do with the locked bootloader.

Development has also died down due to the Thunderbolt coming out. A lot of the big devs for the X jumped ship to a new phone. Its a lot easier to support a device that is unlockable...
I dont think its dead. There doesn't seem like there is much happening right now, but I bet the devs are working on their GB releases and we're about to see a bunch of new gingeROMs coming out soon.
Locked bootloader = only so many options as far as customization goes.
Not that I've been around for eons but something I've learned from the three droid's I've owned and actively modded is that development comes and goes on our end, but it never stops on the dev's end. Usually a slow down in releases means that the next wave of them will be monumental. Even more so with gingerbread coming out! Can't wait for some girly themes to come out for GB roms so I can convince the girlfriend to let me reflash her liberty 1.5 dx over
I loved the look of the new grid10 tablet operating system and would love to see it ported to the xoom.
However it appears that the rate of development is not quite as rapid as I have been used to on my HTC phones. Is there a reason for this ? Also noted the htc Flyer now has honeycomb rims with htc sense ! Any chance anyone far more gifted and technically talented than me is going to look at developing ported roms on to the xoom? Or are we stuck with minor tweaks to the standard Roms forever?
I have yet to see anything that would persuade me to go through the rigmoral of rooting my xoom (awesome device in my eyes) which is another issue afterall what has happened to the one click root solutions that were speedily being developed ?
I hope at some point someone shows some love for this device. Motorola have abandoned it, or so it appears, what about the awesome power of the Rom chefs and genius developers of xda?
Xda for life Apple ? You can keep it !

To be honest, the OS or skin looks kinda unfriendly for table users....i don't want to be flicking all over the place to look for my stuff....
GridOS
I've been playing with GridOS for around 4 days now and I have to say it's a bit frustrating. I own a Motorola Xoom (HC 3.2.2) and a NOOK Color (CM7) and both are pretty smooth and intuitive (as Android should be.) My current phone is a Moto Atrix (2.3.4)
I kind of understand where Fusion Garage was coming from, "trying to be different". And while I think they accomplished that, they also buggered up a [potentially] good device. The tablet hardware is nice...even top-notch...but their software layer leaves a lot to be desired. Stock Honeycomb would be an improvement on the Grid10.
The good news is that they are updating it frequently (I've already received 3 updates in just the 4 days I've used it.) I'm hoping my experience improves over time.
I hope that some devs can figure out how to get some custom stuff onto the grid 10

Im sure there are people that will dissagree with me but I love my dx and have had very little trouble with it. If you can get it cheap go for it why not there are some good roms out there if you dont like the stock system. Lately I have flashed alot of different roms on it and its really not bad to work with I'm still having fun with it
I'd have to say, after about 18-19 months with one, you should pass. I'd get an HTC Incredible/2, or Thunderbolt. I had a lot of problems with mine, and I'm actually on my 3rd replacement device. I've had strangers tell me of similar problems.
I've had much better luck since rooting and installing Liberty ROM v3, but overall I'd say there are better devices out there.
I've also sworn off Motorola for good, or at least until they get rid of Blur. They really know how to ruin a good piece of hardware. It's just terribly slow and unstable. If you get a DX, plan on rooting and flashing something else onto it.
Oh, and as another user has already mentioned, the bootloader can cause problems, especially with the latest update. You have to avoid update .621 if you want to flash a different ROM onto it. I don't think other devices are as problematic in this regard.
OK for a good price. It is a little larger than most phones (a little big to place in a pocket .)
I'm not sure if you're talking from a straight user perspective or someone who is going to muck around a bit with their phone customizing it. For a straight user who isn't going to root it and/or go beyond what Verizon wants you to do with it then I'd say you should skip it and just get whatever new mid to top of the line Android is within your budget.
If you're looking for a phone you can muck around with and truly customize on the cheap then I would definitely recommend the X, especially since you can pick them up for about $100 off of craigslist

I have to disagree with this guy. First off it doesn't matter if the device has blur or not because you can install a custom rom that is ASOP and doesn't even have blur. Motorola in my opinion makes the best hardware and just because the bootloader is locked doesn't mean you can't do a lot with the device. This forum is DEAD for the droid x. Look on rootzwiki and you will find a ICS gem named Gummy rom from Kejar. You won't be disappointed.
As others have mentioned it depends on your situation. If you're looking for a phone to purchase for cheap without a contract, then yes, the X might be one to look at.
Personally if I had to look for something cheap right now my search would be for something with an unlocked bootloader, some decent ROM support and decent battery life.
I am guessing the Incredible 2 might fit that bill.... I'm not sure of any issues the phone may have natively but it is a more powerful phone. Probably would be a bit more expensive though.
NOTE: IF YOU BUY A DROID X AND INTEND TO ROOT/ROM (you should be planning this b/c the stock Droid X is slow and clunky) MAKE SURE IT HASN'T BEEN UPDATED TO SYSTEM VERSION .621.
.605, .602, .596, .595, .340, etc are all fine.

Actually, I think we're agreeing. I was saying if you get one, plan to flash it and get rid of Blur.
I've had hardware issues with it also, but overall, with the right Custom ROM, it can be a good experience.
As someone else has noted, if you aren't planning to root/flash this phone, you're better off with a more user-friendly device, like a Samsung or an HTC.
But, again, just my $0.02.
I still have a Droid X purchased in the release date and I never had problems with, however is getting outdated and becoming slow so it will be replaced by a HTC Rezound next week.
Great phone if you can find a cheap one in great shape. Lots of Dev community support.

I'm running MIUI 4-5-2012 by Wizard0f0. It's the only currently maintained ROM that appears to be stable, fast AND have almost no bugs. Most of the other ROMs (including gummy) have to many bugs for my taste (like camera or MMS or Bluetooth not working properly)
That said, I'm keeping my eyes on gummy and a few others in hopes of a fast, stable, debugged ROM with slightly better battery life. I'm not holding my breath though b/c the other ROMs seem more focused on incorporating ICS framework than getting everything working as it should. Oh well, I guess we'll just wait and see.
Now i am using x if you getting this in a good price than you should buy it.. It is good because of its nice features ..You won't be disappointed...Don't think too much about that just buy it..

I don't know as I'd necessarily agree with that. 4.3" really isn't that abnormally big any more. You have devices like the Galaxy Nexus, Razor, etc coming out now at every turn. They all seem to be going between 4" and 4.65" or something.

Why? Is it because the phone is unpopular with the dev community, or because it's hard to build for this phone? There isn't even any UNofficial CyanogenMod being made.
This is why I love the Nexus line of devices.. so much development even before the product gets released. The lack of Moto X development is making me iffy about purchasing one
I had actually just assumed this would have had a ton of ROMs by now until I saw your thread pop up. I have to say visiting the dev section I'm shocked. It definitely crosses an X off my list as I was leaning G2 or One anyway.

Yea I figure as long as we have root, the stock ROM should be good enough with Motorola's tweaks.
I've read a thread similar to this on all of my phones from the OG galaxy S (captivate). I would say give it some time, heck the dev edition only came out a few weeks ago.
The fact that its impossible to unlock the bootloader on the major carriers is another bottleneck as well. If/when theres a bootloader unlock, the development will come.
Are roms even necessary though? I've always been a terrible crack flasher, but this rom with xposed and gravity box it's pretty much cyanogen. I'm super happy with stock for the first time ever

The Moto X uses a Qualcomm S4 Pro SoC. It was never anything special. Motorola just markets the additional processors as a whole to make the concept easier to understand. Development would be similar to any other new phone.
Porting popular ROMs while retaining the functionality of Active Notifications and Touchless Control may/may not be whole different ball game though.
The X is impressive for a standard carrier device, but nothing will beat a Nexus. I would say The X is, by far, the closest to stock you'll find (again, outside a nexus).
The Moto bloat is slipped in almost unnoticeably and the junk apps are easy to deal with (I actually find some of the 'bloat' well done, such as moto assist - though I still prefer tasker). Happiest off the shelf device I've had since the ogDroid, but hoping to get an N5 for real Dev stuff.
