I'm using 2.0.5-pre13 off this list and it works flawlessly, but I imagine any 2.0.2 or 2.0.5 would work.
Im using 2.05 pre 11. Works great.

When did they decide to start charging with the built in tethering? Is there going to be some sort of notification if you use it?
I don't think they are actually doing anything specif as far as charging or disabling the stock setup. They have stated that they will be monitoring data usage (don't know if they could tell the difference between tethering and device only connections).
Therefore, if you are running up the gigabytes through tethering (or bit torrent downloads, etc.), they may take action (I would guess like limiting your connection to 2G).
I am still using my stock tethering, and will be watching my TMo statements carefully.
I normally hit about 8-10gb a month since I use it as my primary internet. I don't p2p, but I do watch Hulu which uses up a whole lot of data. I've been warned via text that I've used more than my share, but I was only throttled down for a day. It was terrible. I was running a speed test and it was consistently under 100kbps the entire day.
I've been using stock tethering.
Tmobile tech super states that when you start tethering, it won't work you have to cal then up and activate it on your account. the app uses a server port that is monitored and blocked.

If that is the case, then using a generic Google tethering app with a different port could fix it.
However, mine worked fine yesterday with the stock app, and have not been able to try it today yet.

holy bandwidth abuse batman...8-10gb a month is ridiculous.
When I went into the store to buy my HD2 on launch day, the rep and I were talking about tethering. He said he did it on his Cliq when he needed to and at the time I used to use it on my MT3G when I needed it.
He showed me a photocopy of a bill that someone brought in complaining about...Tmobile finally got tired of this dbag abusing the privilege and charged him .20 per mb for everything over 5gb...the bill was like $1100.00. Even back in March, he told me that they would be tightening up on data usage and tethering because of the HDPA+ rolling out. T-Mobile is not into the business of supplying people with dirt cheap home internet.
He looked at my past and current usage and said I was totally safe. I stream Pandora/Slacker for 8 hours a day 5 days a week...tether occasionally if im on the road or at a hotel that does not offer free wifi...and moderately browse the internet just like everyone else. I have only managed to hit 3gb usage in a single month once...and that was on vacation in Cali when my wife was using my connection to upload vacation photos to facebook.
I know it may impact a few honest people...but I think T-Mobile should charge every customer who exceeds the 5gb cap...maybe people like you could give the rest of us a price break on our plans
...
..not true, it work with unlocked phone with at&t so it does not go thru any server of such.

Um...throughout much of 2009, I was going through 3-4gb per month on my G1...with no tethering and no torrent action.
I hope to move on to the myTouch 4G now that I'm out of contract, but suspect I'll probably break the 5gb mark often when running on that speed...maybe not by much, but it'll happen. If they think I need to be throttled (who are they? the TSA?!) and want to charge me extra for my *normal* mobile usage, consistent with my two previous years' use then I may, sadly, have to use WiFi more often...

I have never come close to touching 5gb...and I use what I think is a lot of data.
...I would bet I use a lot a home, but I do pull some torrents and lots of netflix, hulu, and PS3 content.
As I said in my previous post...I constantly stream music, at least 8 hours a day. I tether for I would say 2-3 hours a week (casual web browsing), and use the hell out of the phones browser and other data services such as Ustream (live podcasts and such)
Here is a screenshot of my current data usage for this month (only two days to go on this cycle)

Well, I use my tethering for Hulu, Youtube, browsing, and chatting. On occasion I'd download a ROM update. Since I do that pretty much daily, I'm sure that's why I ring up such high GB usage. It's probably mostly Hulu. I've been throttled down, but as I mentioned before it lasts about a day after getting the text.
Here's what I got for this month:
I've had tmo for about 9 years, they have never throttled me once... I don't go over 5gb every month, but easily more than half the year. I use it for school work on my laptop, stream slacker and Pandora, stream from my server at home, navigation.
Basically I use it all I want, never worry about anything, and tmo treats me fairly, that's why I'm still with them after all this time.
That's with WiFi use at home
The only reason i use WiFi at home is for the speed bump, my mt4g gets 16mbps down 16mpbs up on my WiFi
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I've been using tmo for ages too. Last month was the first time I got the text warning me for going over 5GB. I was around 9GB's when it was sent to me. This current billing cycle is the first time I was throttled down.
I'm going to cut out streaming video and see how my usage is next month.

A coworker bought a xoom on launch day. He is not tech savvy but has been using a droidx for about 4 months with average monthly data usage of 800mb to 1gb. Based on that, we both figured he was good to use the 1gb plan and then upgrade to more data if his usage with the xoom was more than his droidx.
Since launch day, he has used 921mb of data. I have turned off 3g to prevent usage, but we can't figure out what is eating his data. I am assuming it is back country, an app he buses on his dx that maps out hiking routes by using GPS and aerial photographs. I'm guesing that the app isn't setup for a device like the xoom, and some issue is causing it to continually download data.
Anyone else encounternthis problem? Verizon was little help and we are worried about massive overage chargesbespecially because the My Verizon app displays everything used up though 72 hours ago, and in 3 days (once the actual usage though now is displayed) he'll be way over his 1gb limit.

Verizon tried to screw me on data - my gf bought me a xoom for my birthday and when she purchased it at a Verizon store, she was very clear with the rep that she was NOT setting up any data plan with the device. The day after I got it (the 26th), I went to the same store to buy the portfolio case. The same rep who sold her the phone asked me several times if I wanted to sign up for 3g. I said "no thanks" multiple times. Yesterday I discovered that I was on a month-to-month contract and I should expect an activation fee and a month of data on my next bill.
I had a rep tell me she was reversing the charges, but I don't trust verizon at the moment. Seems like they are pulling car dealer tactics in order to get themselves a couple extra million in fraudulent revenue.
I read somewhere on here that Verizon reps are forcing people to sign up in order to get the Xoom. When I purchased my Xoom from Bestbuy they didn't force me to do anything. They handed me the box after I paid and I left. When you set up your xoom it asks you if you want to skip the 3G setup, which I skipped. Who ever said that you need 3G to have a working Xoom is wrong. The Verizon sales people are scamming or something.
Tell him to to put it in airplane mode. You can still use wifi, but this will ensure he is not using 3g.

Verizon was initially going to require at least a month of data. They backed off of this and I'm assuming some dont know. If any Verizon store rep tells you otherwise have him contact someone higher up.

I saw this App today:
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.rgruet.android.g3watchdogpro&feature=search_result
---> Usage by application (Android 2.2+, unavailable on Dell Streak)
Don't know about Honeycomb support...
I went through 250 mbs in 4 days, half of which was on WiFi. I called Tier 2 tech support and they tried to say a computer would use more and my Incredible is a smaller device, so it wont use as much data.
I average 950-1400 mbs a month on the incredible, doing exactly the same stuff. I might have to rethink this whole idea because of how they structure the data plans. hotspotting off the Inc is dog slow, maybe a radio update will help?
After a day and half I installed the "My Verizon" app from the market to check my usage... over 500MB! I was blown away... I called in and they confirmed it... I switched to airplane mode and switched on only wifi which seems to have taken care of the issue... I switch on 3g only when I am out of wifi.
I have installed basically the same apps as I use on my Nexus S with the exception of the Tegra-specific games. I checked my Tmobile data usage for my Nexus S and I average about 2GB per month... with the Xoom I would be through that in less than a week!
Something doesn't seem right...

They did the EXACT same thing to me. As soon as I left the store I called up customer service and after getting a supervisor on the phone ended up having them completely void out the entire number and month to month contract that they added which I didn't ask for. Why would I pay for their stupid data plans on the tablet when I can tether with my rooted Droid?
Excessive upload from xoom
I have been monitoring my data usage to get a feel for what I use on the 3g
network, I mostly use wifi.. It started yesterday I noticed 40megs of data used on the 3g and 38 of that was uploads. On wifi I see 700mb+ uploaded and maybe 5-7mb downloaded. Im trying to figure out what that tablet is uploading,
there is not much on it. In the first 5 days I owned it I used 1.5mbs of 3g data, yesterday alone it hit 40mb+. When at work I dont touch it much, except for
a email here and there and maybe some info look up but that does not explain the massive amount of data going out from it. Any ideas would be welcome.

Speak for yourself I like my mobile tech to be well, mobile. I don't want a wifi only tablet but I do want a 4G/3G tablet to have wifi capabilities for when I am home. Your post is your opinion and I am more than willing to bet many many other people feel the same way.
I wouldn't want a WiFi only tablet ever.
In 3 billing days I've used about 100mb of data. Part of this is allowing the market to update stuff while I'm not on a wifi which I will have to be careful about.
My 1st bill is in btw and it was like 65 bucks.... that includes like 5 days of prorated service since my billing cycle apparantly starts on a different day than when I started my service
I keep mine in airplane mode off of wifi unless I really need it.
3g data overuse
I experienced a similar problem where my Xoom sucked up my entire 1GB dataplan in 5 days. I returned the device and said that I would wait for the iPad2. The guy convinced me to stick to the xoom and says if this was an issue people would be going nuts. He credited me the 1GB and bumped me to 5GB free for the next month if I would stick with the Xoom. I REALLY want to like it so I did. Well, the first day of my second Xoom sucked up 265MB, most of which was upload. I got smart an have TrafficStats installed. Turns out that most of the upload ~250 MB was the actually System trying to upload something. All other apps and services amounted to the other 15MB. Looks like I'll be taking this one back if someone can't figure out why the OS is uploaded crap. Part of me wonders if it isn't the fact that the Google Backup is checked. I wonder if it is actually uploaded all of the stuff on my device somewhere? Is it a coincidence that my application total is 270MB and the total bytes sent by the OS is 261MB????

Give me a break. Not "everyone" wants a wifi only Xoom, it must be nice having the universe revolve around you. There is definitely a market for a wifi only Xoom, but it is stupid to say that this is what everyone wants.
Christ all this melodramatic *****ing is getting old.
I mostly run off wifi at home and the office but definitely need the ability to connect when away from my wifi. I bought my xoom the first day it was out and have been using it ever since. By primarily sticking to wifi I should be able to come in under 2GB a month. It is important for me to have a connection whenever I need it though.

Even if it were Google backup, it would not be doing a full image backup every day. No the numbers suggest to me that we are overlooking something in your usage pattern. If you can (and are willing) try leaving the device on but not using it for 24 hours and see what the usage is.
I am not sure that I trust TrafficStats here and wonder if it is "running home to momma" when it can not identify the source of bandwidth usage. I believe the usage, just not necessarily the allocation by application.
I too am surprised by the amount of data my Xoom is consuming.
Typically I use about 1 Gb a month on my D1.
My Xoom has used 1.2 Gb in a week!
I am waiting for VZW to send me my password so I can get their Data Usage widget to work properly on my Xoom.
I have been on WiFi 90% of the time but I didn't realize until a couple of days ago that you also need to be in airplane mode or the Xoom NOM NOM NOM's the Gb's!
I have heard a few of you mention different apps that allow you to view data usage. Which do you recommend and why?
TIA

Yeah. There something "funny" definitely going on. There's a similar thread on the Motorola Support forums. Someone over there narrowed it down to auto-sync behavior. If you turn off auto-sync in setting the massive upload stops.
That may solve the upload problem but it should not be necessary! I'm not planning on activating 3G just yet, but after the LTE upgrade I may be more interested in activation. But not if auto-sync is a problem. I guess I could turn it off when I'm not on wifi. It's too bad there is not an option is settings to only auto-sync on wifi. Google are you listening?

Her problem is sharing the connection. I have used over 10 gig a month with netflix, hbo go. But I don't share the connection.one month I used almost 20 gigs.
It could be the fact that shes using a P2P software to download music. MP3 Rocket is very similar to Limewire.
I'm not going to go into a whole thing here, but I think that you could stand to take a step back and look at this situation objectively. Do you think it's reasonable to be doing P2P over 3G with an unpaid for wireless tether and not expect any flack from Sprint over it?
Hell, I don't really appreciate it as another Sprint user. Do your P2P at home, please.

Unfortunately, it's users like your wife that are accelerating Sprint's justification in supporting some people within Sprint for the need to switch from going from an unlimited data plan to a tiered data plan, like the other carriers. Because of that, I don't think you're going to get much sympathy on this board.

And Sprint should because they have to pay Verizon (or whatever company's tower it is) for the overage.
Alright, I woke up this morning to a email from AT&T saying I'm in the 5% this month.
oi41 .tinypic. com/24uxkkl. jpg
This is the data that I have used.
oi42 .tinypic. com/2132oh .jpg
Is anybody else getting these emails at such a low amount of data use?
It's pretty stupid to say that you're at the 5% when you're only at 5 gigabytes, last month I used 20 gigabytes and didn't get anything.
Also please don't respond if you're just going to say "you can start using wifi." Well I can't, because this is my only way online where I live.
I just hit 8GB when i received the email.
Yeah, they also sent me a text about an hour ago saying,
" AT&T Free Msg: Your data usage this month is in the top 5% of users. Use Wi-Fi to help avoid reduced speeds in future bill cycles. Visit www .att. com/dataplans. "
This is kinda pissing me off now.
There ought to be some sort of audit on this.. I doubt 5g is in the top 5%

Apparently, anything over 4GB puts you into that category now. Two of my friends who have AT&T got that message and only use around 3-4GB a month.
Way to go AT&T, control your customers and take away their freedoms and what they pay for.

At&t does this to try lessen the stress on their network.
They also use this as a scare tactic when users use "free" online services...
At&t should have at least said "Anybody over 2gb, will be throttled."
I highly doubt they even looked at how much data gets used per month before putting this into effect, it's like they just tossed out anything over 2gb as the 5%.
2Gb Warning
I got the message this morning and checked my data usage and it was 2.1GB
I used 13.2GB last bill and I never got the msg.
dang how do people reach so much data use?
I don't know, but The guy I know who works for the big red thinks I used alot of data.

Pandora, netflix, downloads, etc.
It's not hard to go over 2gb in a day... or even a few hours, without tethering.
After years of using AT&T I have never once had data throttled while averaging about 5 GB a months for the past year. still waiting for AT&T to say something because its like that on both my line and my wife's line where we use a combined 10GB a month.
I got the message this morning at 2.1Gb. Funny thing is, my download speeds have actually gotten better. I used to average 2-3Mbps down, 1-1.5 up, but after 3 speed tests, I'm running 4.5-5.5 down, .75 up. Throttle my upload speed all they want, I really don't care. But I'm definitely loving this new download speed. I don't know if this has anything to do with the Cingular 410 APN I'm using on my Galaxy Nexus.
Still, I find it ridiculous that AT&T is allowed to implement this kind of system without a means of releasing their tracking methods. Using the "top 5%" is such a asinine method of choosing who to throttle. IF they went ahead and just told grandfathered customers they would throttle past a particular GB, akin to what t-mobile is doing, it would make a lot more sense. Now, we have users stating they have reached anywhere from 2-13 gigs saying they have been placed in the "top 5%". I'm filing a complaint with the BBB petitioning AT&T to give us more information on how they distinguish who is in the top 5% of data consumption and to give us a better way of tracking our data usage compared to the others placed in the top 5%.
I've gotten the message for the past couple of months. They now say they will throttle at 5gb. Either we need to come up with a work around like tmo guys did on cm7 or I'm switching to sprint. Been with them for yrs now and I used 10 to 25 gb on my old dumb phone razr.

Yes it is possible. Why you say no? I do at least 150+ on my phone now. Always used lots of data, always will.

I need to add a dedicated wifi internet to my work van. The sprint internet hotspot is too much 34.99 for only 2gb. If I add a line to my family plan for 19.99 + 10 for premium data, get a new phone, then use my old rooted evo as a dedicated wifi hotspot for unlimited 3g internet for 8 hours a day, would I get caught and have my whole family plan canceled?
I'd say no, but certainly no one can give you a for sure answer.
I'd say even with 8 hours of web surfing, data usage should still be reasonable, and considering Sprint only seems to be going after the absolute offenders (gathered from what people are using (data), and not having problems) I'd assume you should be okay.
I really don't think anyone can give you a guarantee, but if I were to be a betting man, or in your same situation, I would do it.
I would say no as long as you don't go overboard. There's a huge difference between tethering to browse the web, update files and whatnot vs tethering to watch netflix, play ps3/xbox 360/Wii, etc.
However, don't take my word for it as I may be a betting man yet I still haven't won the powerball yet.

According to Dan Hesse, "unlimited" is truely unlimited.... Or maybe not...
I tether alot on my secondary line and my dad does on his second line and we use an average of 200 - 250gb a month between 4 lines and sprint never says a word about it our secondary lines are our primary internet connections for work unlimited data is unlimited data and u can use a proxy to make desktop data appear as mobile only with out a lot of speed loss, we both use GPS at least 2 hrs a day 5 days a week sometimes more depending on where we drive for work
We are legion, for we are many.
You'll be okay as long as that seems to be your normal usage. If you only use 2gb a month for 6 months on a line and then jump to 30gb a month it will get you noticed.

We started out kinda low but when we first got sprint we had Nokia 6xxx models with swappable face plates and over the years as the phones advanced our data increased when we got treos the data went way up and every upgrade just kept getting higher and higher til we got where we are now
We are legion, for we are many.

You would be surprised, I used my Evo to play MW3 and BF3 after an hour I had used less that 100mb.

Absolutely false. Online gaming would use up 100kb in a few seconds, not an hour...

Ok and when was the last time you tried this? It was months ago, but I have done this.
also kb was supposed to be mb. I don't remember the exact number, It may have actually been closer to 50 or less.
Its actually a lot less than you think it is.
Scratch that.

Not saying I haven't either. I played Uncharted 3 multiplayer via tether. It was faster than my DSL connection. Then I saw the light and switched to Comcast. Still, it amazes some people that you can tether a phone to a game console to get your game on.
Sorry for derailing the thread.

Been with them for 12years and had the same number. Trying to move to another carrier. It sucks because they only gave me till next week to port my number or I LOSE IT. Looks like I'm going to get a rinky dink phone until I can get a upgrade. Going to miss my Evo This number is on everything so I must do it. My business will suffer if I don't get this number.
I was up in arms but I am a firm believer in karma and I did tether and got caught so WTF am I going to do. In the letter it said you are "using it as a modem and tethering with out a tethering plan".
Just wanted to ask, can they really tell, or is it just data usage they are going by.
do you mind me asking what ROM and what tethering app you were using?
Sorry man, that totally blows. How much data did you blow through? I remember people getting letters after going through a few hundred Gigs a month.
Been tethering my EVO's for a couple years. First my EVO 4g with my laptop, now my "retired" 4g with my EVO 3d. I watch netflix and surf the web on my 4g. No problems yet. So...just how much data have you been using?

I'm using Derp 3d and I'm using wireless tether for root. In March I used 109gb and in April I used like 102gb. I use Hulu plus and I think thats the's reason. I've been doing it for 2 years with netflix, my pc and video games but just got hulu 3 months ago, and now this. SMH.
Most users don't use that much on a cable/dsl connection, let alone wireless.
I'd agree with sprint, that is excessive.
Just get the cheapest prepaid setup you can find until you figure out where you're going to move to.

Yea, that sucks. You were terminated more for the excessive data use than for tethering. Everyone who I know of who had their contracts cancelled for tethering were also using large amounts of data. They likely would have got you even if you were paying for it, as were many of them. They just used the tethering excuse to try and make an example.

"can they tell?" interesting question... Did you use HTC DEV to root your phone and can Sprint track downloaded apps (wireless tether) from the market? They could probably track those and put 2 and 2 together.
your data usage is very high and noticeable.

That is why you got cancelled. Is that all 4g data? Because if it is 3G, even at 1MB, it would take you 12 days of constant downloading to get to 109GB of data.

I used unrevoked when it was first available, and I didn't download it off the market. I agree it was excessive. Probably why I'm not too upset more concerned with my number I guess.

As said above that is really excessive so most likely it's not more of a They found out but more of a Using Way to much data and so they cut off your data.. Now as how they found out.. Most likely they assumed that its basically impossible to use that much data on a Phone no matter how hard you try.. But most likely it's labeled "illegal tethering" For the fact that if you have unlimited data then they have no real reason to cancel your contract other than for illegal tethering if you don't have tethering on your contract.

If I can figure out from your few posts here that your real name is EDITED TO PROTECT PRIVACY and you're from EDITED AGAIN TO PROTECT PRIVACY, I don't see why sprint couldn't figure out that you're tethering. Thing is, I tether too, but I keep my usage below 5 Gigs a month, so no red flags are never raised, hence no investigations.
MOD EDIT: PLEASE DO NOT REVEAL PERSONAL INFO, amd even less if it not yours

Unlimited Data is not "Unlimited Everything"
According to your Sprint terms and conditions, you have unlimited email, pictures, internet surfing and messaging, as well as NON-CONTINUOUS streaming of videos, downloading, and online gaming.

LMAO I know.
To Tell the truth it's illegal and I did it, not much I can say or am going to say. My girlfriend is a lawyer and asked if I wanted to go that route. No because I feel stupid trying to fight something I did although I get free legal service it seems like a waste of time.
Am I pissed I got no more free internet....hell yeah LOL what do you think. I'm not rich but not hurting for money either, so in hind sight it seems not worth it lol. I guess with Hulu wither I paid for the hotspot service or not it wouldn't have made much of a difference. Tommorrow I'm getting 4g unlimited internet from clear which is probably what I should have done in the first place.
