I'm asking because I just saw an article, about Consumer Reports, that ranked phones by carrier. http://blogs.computerworld.com/1733...consumer_reports_ratings_beat_down_the_iphone
The Epic didn't even rank as one of the top 3 and the Intercept was ranked #2! If anyone has access to CR, please let us know how the Epic 4G ranked and why it might not have made the Top 3 on Sprint.

My guess is the article was made before the Epic even came out. Or it is also possible they feel the device has not been in the market long enough at the writing of the article.
But thats just guesses :/
Two rankings

The Epic scored 76, along with the iPhone, and other Galaxy S phones. (Strange they recommended the Galaxy S's which scored the same, but not the iPhone.)
Here's a quote from the review:
"CR's Take
A powerful phone with a brilliant display and top-notch keyboard, including access to an ultra-fast 4G network"
Among the highs were the screen (size and resolution), WIMAX, Swype, etc.
Lows included Virtual Keypad (no blind dialing), Heavy phone, no physical phone buttons, no PIM software for your desktop (?!? - Google everything!), no preset text messages, no custom text messages, hard-to-access microsd, and shutter lag.

They said they are not going to recommend the iphone 4 due to reception thing..
That said.."Heavy phone"?!?!? People have been complaining how Epic is too light and they call it heavy lol..I guess can't please everyone.
Also..Virtual keybad they say..but theoretically cant you dial on the keyboard? lol..and probably can map phone button to keyboard too..its in the menus...

Why is it that all the coolest gadgets get to one of the worst carriers first? I love the specs of the Supersonic (EVO 4G) or whatever you want to call it. The problem is with Sprint. I've tested HTC EVDO products (HTC Titan) back to back with HTC GSM products (HTC TyTN). The CDMA products suck battery life much more quickly than the GSM products. If found this on almost every Sprint and Verizon CDMA smartphone. This is probably why the the Supersonic has a larger battery.
Also, it is true that some CDMA products do not allow simultaneous data and voice transmission. This may not be true of this device because it will be able to do CDMA for phone and WimaX for data. I am very interested in this device but I'd be much more interested if this device were on AT&T or even T-Mobile.
I am loving the HD2 running on AT&T. But I'd love more internal memory, the front facing camera, the kickstand, the better camera, etc.
sprint is the cheapest carrier, but valid point with battery useage. I also don't particularly like having to get an "OK" from sprint to change phones. Wish you could use a SIM card.
question though... how often are you browsing the web or using data while talking on the phone? I can't think of one instance in my past 10 years with a cell phone that I needed data while talking. If you're on the net, your data gets put on hold untill after your phone call is over. Back when I had dialup, my phone service offered a similar feature, and cdma does the exact same thing.
As far as everything else, speeds, coverage, dropped calls, annoying but I hear complaints from customers from all the different carriers, it's a cell phone thing.
OH! and where's my damn sprint iPhone? I'm calling BS on cdma getting all the cool toys... I had to wait a year before sprint finally got an android phone, while t-mobile / att had all types of phones that could be used on their network *rage*
let us have our moment in the spotlight for once.... sheesh
hold on boy
i think sprint is the better than att all the way. at least here in San Francisco.
The plans are better than att.
i have friends with their iphones and their internet sucks compare with my htc pro 2 on sprint.
And htc evo data details.
4g + data= Works
3g + data= No
wifi+data=Works
I can't wait for this phone.
No matter what carrier get the cool things first there is always some spoiled brat shouting out loud.

And this @ OP.
I really really hope there is a GSM version coming out soon.
lol there is gonna be a GSM version no doubt. there will definitely be a variant of the Supersonic(aka EVO 4G here in the US for Sprint) in Europe/overseas NO DOUBT that you'll only be able to use on EDGE here but there will probably also be a GSM variant here in the states for another carrier that is basically the same phone but a little different and with different radios or whatever. an example would be the supersonic for t-mobile, lets say their first HSPA+ compatible phone or something, they call it whatever they want and HTC basically makes it for them using the core parts of the supersonic and keeps everything like android and whatnot and just changes up the radio and changes CDMA to GSM and puts in tmo's 3g bands in the radio, and whatever other physical changes t-mo may want like the buttons and whatever.

Last time i checked, Sprint (and by extension CDMA) usually gets last dibs on the cool phones. Name them...Touch Diamond/Pro/Pro 2, HTC Hero, Nexus 1. They never even carried the Touch Diamond 2 till today.
it is true, I wish there were sim cards.. but other than that, in the bay area, sprint kicks ass!
I have never gotten one dropped call since I got my hero, and I talk 2000+ minutes a month. I have 3g almost everywhere.
Also, no matter what people say, sprint has amazing customer service. I mean, at least you don't get put on the line with some indian guy half way around the world who just tells you to turn your phone off then on again...
oh and, at&t just sucks... no matter what hahah I'm glad sprint is stepping up to the plate. they offer amazing deals, great phones (as of now) and I think, are starting to move up in the world

AT&T does suck, but I'm stuck on them. I use Sprint for my data service (aircards FTW) and they have AMAZING customer service. Whereas AT&T just *****es about everything and tells you how wrong you are, then tells you how happy they are you stay them. If they didn't have such fast 3G (which in my rural area isn't crowded, so it is reliable) I would switch to Sprint in a heartbeat. Too bad EvDo pretty much sucks

Or the Nexus
I think the battery suck issue is not so bad given the fact that you can get almost unlimited voice, data, and messaging (of all sorts), plus turn by turn GPS+traffic routing, for $70/mo, less with discounts.
Where's AT&T or TMo's 4G network? I don't hear them actually deploying LTE in any other market other than testing. Kudos to Sprint... psyched for EVO.
ok, so the deal with this phone, ive been reading up on the specs, 4g (6mb/s) is 10x faster then 3g(300mb/s) i run off clearwire internet witch happens to run off the same exact wi-max as sprint and let me tell you, it is FAST. the processor in the phone is a massive 1ghz! for a phone, thats a overkill, plus 588mb of ram... i cant wait to try to overload this phone... probaly take 50+ apps running at once... 4.3 inch touch screen, 8 mega pixel camera, android 2.1 (unless they release a update before the phone is released) i say all in all this phone is going to be by far the fastest android phone on the market, and PS: the HTC HD2 IS the same exact phone just running WinMo 6.5, slightly better processor but clocked the same, same ram, same screen size, its the same phone with a slightly different button layout.
you can check out the side by side specs here

Wrong OS, mate.
he did say "variant"
as in its not exactly the same but close, a knockoff, cousin, whatever. everything is almost identical spec wise just the os is different. thus its a variant. if GSM'ers want the evo in a gsm model. you could help with the port of android to the hd2. just a thought.
.
It's not really a variant. The OS makes them completely different. One is full of future; another is just about dead. Unless someone could port a high quality and well tested Android into it, then it would be a different story.
Well I the closes variant to the Evo 4g is the Desire or Nexus One. If you can do away with the 4.3 inch screen, 4g Wimax, 8MP camera and the extra memory. Well the year is young, so who knows.
Sprint is great in Minneapolis.
Come to papa Evo.
IS T-Mobile HAVING A HARD TIME....keeping up with technological advancements. Why would T-Mobile release the G2 with 800MHz, it should at least be the first 1.5 Ghz device? I understand that not everyone wants a high end device but with all of us early G1 adopters, moving to N1 or Mytouch devices you would think G2 would be the next generation WOW device. T-Mobile please try and stay ahead of the curve. Your plans, HSPA+, and (Google partnership) 1st Android phone has kept you competing with the BIG 3. You have to make sure your devices aren't obsolete before the are even released (Garmin Phone). Even if you form partnerships (HTC, Garmin, Motorola), you should encourage your partners to use the voices of the forums (XDA, T-mobile, etc.) to see what the early adopters want. The forums are the voices of the buyers. You have lost early G1 buyers to other carriers because you aren't staying ahead of technology. I'm a T-Mobile fan for life where else can you have 3 smart phones with unlimited everything 3g speeds for under $180.00. But I want to be able to buy a smart phone that paint my toenails cyanogen JK!
Most of us are changing phones every six months, because we want the latest greatest thing. We are not going to downgrade to G2 we need a phone that will draw us especially if we know Gingerbread will be warm for Christmas.
G1, MyTouch 3g, Nexus 1. Newest Cyanogen. XDA lurker
I think 800mhz is fine (doesn’t the iphone4 run at 800mhz)? Ive never had any speed issues with my nexus at 1ghz and would underclock it for more battery life... The overall usability of the device is more important than the cpu clockspeed... Ie I think the original droid with 500-600mhz cpu did better in some benchmarks than the nexus/hd2 at 1ghz because it had a better gpu.
I think it's an underclocked 1GHz Snapdragon so, Set CPU?
T-Mobile has more than 1 high-end HTC Phone on the horizon.
There's more where this is coming from. Patience, my friend.
You have specs on the g2?
This is all pure speculation until T-Mobile announces the actual hardware. Depending on the CPU/GPU used, clock speed might not be a reflection of actual performance. Much like Intel and AMD chips, it is no longer about pure MHz but efficiency and performance per clock cycle.
T-Mobile is the smallest nationwide carrier, so remember their development/operating budget might not be as drastic as the other 3 major players. This of course partially dictates how many OEMs they can seduce into producing a particular kind of phone for them. I understand T-Mobile needs awesome phones to attract new subscribers, but at the same time (unless it is an iPhone) it will be the quality of the network and pricing that will make people stick around.
I find it very had to believe that tmobile would allow their HSPA+ launch phone would not have a 1ghz snapdragon. Plus where have you gotten those specs from

I want something massive with a keyboard maybe Evo with keyboard, I would be in love. I'm thinking about jumping carriers though, it was between Sprint and Verizon but Verizon's plan are more expensive and sprint has 4g in my area. T-mobile just received 3g in my area and I don't even hit 1mbps. I wanna go to sprint to get Evo or Epic but I'm more of a HTC fan I have a little hatred for Samsung. I just have to pay off the myTouch on my line and by then the G2 will be out and maybe myTouch HD. If they don't seem nice I'm going to Sprint

"The information for this phone is PRELIMINARY and could be incomplete or inaccurate."
Ok so yesterday, i was setting up shortcuts to bookmarks for my fellow employess on there epics and one person with a droid 2.
First thing i noticed the droid 2 is ugly square weird looking device also has the ugliest looking dullest screen EVER!!!
The epics bookmarks look nice with a nice red ribbon the droids bookmark is an ugly gray box that has something in it which i couldnt tell what it was cause the screen was not vibrant/bright at all.
Overall seriously this super amoled screen is amazing compared to all other phones i compared however the evo and the incredible dont look too bad but Super amoled wins!!!!
Now to service on verizon, ugh 3 bars in a 5 bar area for sprint.
Now when i come across places with both full bars i opened up the browser loaded the web page sprint killed verizon in loading it.
In this somewhat a review...
Overall: Epic=Brightest Prettiest Screen EVER.
Sprint vs verizons service and 3g speeds= Sprint one
Just something i noticed today and i must say im happy with sprint and the epic just wish they would hurry up with the official froyo.
well... ok. that can be said about almost any phone's screen compared to the epic. truth is the only thing i'll miss when i get my next phone is going to be the amoled screen

Hes probaly fed up with the delay of froyo.
Im not im satified with my epic on 2.1 stock rooted with mobile ap and after looking at all my friends different screens and phones i love it!!! i played with sense and is pretty cool but launcher pro is still the best!!!
Im not in any hurry for froyo to come out til we have a working infrastructure hotspot!! I do like that noobnls already got 2.3 running!! cant wait for cm6 with infrastrucute wireless tether and even cm7 probaly no far along after the official source drops. but im in no hurry or going to ***** and whine cause i know my phone still blows all other phones out of the water.
Yeah, I have a friend with a Droid 2 and another with a Droid Incredible. Playing with both of their phones made me very happy with my Epic. Have to say at least here, Sprint's 3G is noticably faster than Verizon's. I'm 3 hours away from the nearest 4G market.

Please do not do any more "reviews". You clearly do not know what you are doing and showing alot of bias, and you cannot compare the 2 netowrks from the area you are standing in and conclude one is better.

Verizon as a telco company is crap and their mobile department isn't much better. If it weren't for the fact that the lazy workers at verizon were unionized, BS contracts, and verizon's exclusive deal to provide the federal gov. with BB services, Verizon would be worse off than Microsoft in the mobile department right now.
/end rant
Well they prob are in pretty good shape right now, they have the new moto and lg dual core phones comin (not to mention the iphone also) along with their lte network.....they gotta be in good shape
If they're so bad how come they're the company we go roaming to when we have no signal? I mean damn yeah our phone may be better but you can't judge it based on phone with disimiliar parts and two different carriers. You can't say you would have posted this if you were in a dead zone and only the Droid 2 was working. I appreciate the review but the bias invalidates the evidence. In Journalism of any sort you limit yourself from a full bias. Partial do exist.

I don't know where you are but where I am, Verizon is King! My Sprint phone next to a Verizon phone is like a slug on 3G and I'm always roaming on Verizon. Even in my house, I can have 4 or 5 bars on Sprint, the out of no where, my Sprint signal drops to nothing and I'm roaming on Verizon with 3 bars. It seems, a 3 bar signal on Verizon is like having 5 bars on a Sprint phone... At least around here.
BTW, not all bars are equal, when comparing them on different phones. The reason is how the signal level is programmed to display. I'm thinking Samsung might like to show more bars then HTC, Motorola, or even a Blackberry at a given signal level. Maybe Sammy does this because their antennas suck!

Just watched a demo of the MOTO Atrix dual core....wow the scrolling is horrible. Side by side with the Epic, the differences are HUGE! It's hard not to smile knowing that the EPIC still dominates even dual core offerings.
I noticed it's an ATT "4G" phone, so after going to ATT site and clicking their 4G link, it took me to a map of blue colored coverage, which oddly enough looks EXACTLY like their 3G coverage. Upon further examination, that's EXACTLY what they show you, the 3G coverage. There are but a small handful of cities that actually implement TMOs HSPA+ '4G'. Just like apple, att using their 'full of ****' marketing practices. It's really sad how much $ apple and att has made selling inferior hardware and service for twice that of which I pay for the Epic on Sprint.
I have 2 Epics, with unlimited everything (except the landline 1500min pool), and both phones plans combined is cheaper than 1 iphone with unlimited everything, except the 4GB worth of data. And that's 3G data!
Man that's so sad. I can't believe how many fools there are out there.

My friend who I have known for 8 years bought the Atrix with the Dock and everything spending $500+. Personally, I would have not invested so much in a device that is not going to easy to make custom kernel's for. Matter of fact, its a locked boot loader which means you are screwed. Even Cyanogen himself said today that he would support the device had it not been for that fact. Still, its kinda cool, but makes developing for it a lot ( LOT ) harder than it should be.
Yet they make the XOOM developer friendly. Go figure, why would they not choose this with the phone? Do we have the provider to blame? Is it what they want for their phone systems, or are we just being put to a test to see how far developers can push the envelope with the newest phones to make custom roms/kernels?

Not the first moto device with a locked boot loader, anything and everything is hackable. Period.

XOOM is a "flagship device" all of google's flagship devices are the first to ship with the OS and are VERY developer friendly so far the list is G1,Droid,Nexus 1, Nexus S, XOOM
Honestly, I can not stand AT&T. They have the same pricing as Verizon, yet they're inferior (network wise) to Sprint. The only reason they had a chance in the mobile market industry is because of the iPhone (which I still prefer Android over).
Now that Verizon has iPhone, ATT will probably be bought out by another carrier, or something weird.

i have both the epic and the atrix
the epic has its winning points and the atrix has its also
the att 4g coverage is 3x better then sprint service in phoenix
its all personal opinion of what people think
i love the atrix 4g and dont really care for the epic because i live in a blind spot but i love the work that is done with the roms

LOL -- ATT....did someone just defend ATTs service???
Sprint's CLEAR division has LTE in Phoenix running 100Mb down and peak 47Mb uploads.........ATT probably runs their whole network off of one of the LTE connections.
There will always be someone who lives in a dead zone. WiMax ins't there yet, but between Sprint and Verizon's networks, Phoenix couldn't be covered any better. Roms allow for forced roam, which I had on my WinMo 6.5 phone.....and could switch between networks and roam 3G if I had a Sprint issue. It made for the most robust phone I've ever seen anyone in possession of (TP2 was quad band).

That I agree about the service here... T mobile 3G is faster than our 3G...

Their 'enhanced' 3G is quite fast....Got over 5Mb on my sisters Samsung Tab sitting 100ft in front of the tower....2Mb up. Damn't Sprint, unlock our WiMax UPLOAD already.......bandwidth is clearly available up and down, it won't do jack to the network if they let us full duplex. I mean, it's a phone..... I couldn't imagine FB pic uploads swamping the network with just a fraction of the HD YouTube streaming

Fck att,i hope they go under.Their costumer support is the worst, when I had iphone 3gs they acted like they were doing me a favor by me staying with them, lol.
I had tmobile and sprint since then and both of these carriers are light years ahead in terms of everything, dont know about verizon but I havent heard nothing bad about them.

sprints customer service in stores sucks big time **** and thats another reason why i left.
some of the employees are just braindead and dont what is right or left
att and verizon are the best right now and because they know what they are doing and thats why they are so big
sprints barely getting its stupid company ass back in gear after all the years it was behind and watch it fall back down soon

Almost all store employees are dumb at any carrier.
What counts for sprint and tmobile is that they dont disconnect your service if you dont pay wkthing 2-3 days.I can be 2 weeks late with sprint and not get charged extra and not even have a warning from sprint.
Plus on sprint and tmobile I can download 80gb of movies a month, they dont have data cap.So if you use your phone as your primary internet then tmo and sprint is only choices.
I just wish I dint leave tmobile for sprint because speed was way faster on tmobile, and my promised sprint's 4g never came.
Yeah your ridge about Tue paying the.bill late. I've been late before and they don't even care.

The atrix is a far more powerful device, but the first true dual cores will be powered by omap4 and perhaps 3rd Gen snapdragons or tegra3's. That's when it all really begins.
I work for a company that provides cell service and my 2 years contract is expiring soon. I am eligible for a new device. I have had a Droid X on my personal plan, but plan to sell it once I get the upgraded business device.
Here is what my company supports - which one should I get and why?
AT&T - Apple iPhone 4 32GB Black
AT&T - HTC Inspire 4G
AT&T - HTC Tilt 2
Sprint - HTC EVO 4G
T-Mobile - myTouch 4G Black
T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G
Verizon - Apple iPhone 4 32GB
Verizon - Thunderbolt by HTC
Verizon - LG Vortex
Verizon - LG Ally
Verizon - Motorola Droid 2 Global
Not much of an option, IMO. TIA.
What's important to you? Keyboard? Battery?
As mrkite said, what's important to you? AT&T in this area, NYC Metro, still has poor service and a 2gB data cap so scratch their phones for me. T-Mobile is probably going to be gobbled up by AT&T so they're out.
The iPhone doesn't have a user replaceable battery and it wouldn't last me through the day, that and the Thunderbolt (which has poor battery life) are off the list. I'd also rather have Android over Apple.
The LG phones are pretty old so that leaves the Droid 2 Global. I have a Droid X and really want an LTE phone but don't see one that I like yet. Maybe by September.
My droid x has decent battery life -
what's important: battery life, coverage, 4g, android (gb preferred), software keyboard.
You're not impressed with the bionic or other 4g phones out now or soon?
I'm weary of the bionic, as I'm not particularly happy about the screen (pen-tile), web top shadow os and the distinct possibility of a locked bootloader. So, if possible, I would wait for the next round of phones, or wait for a sgs II, that looks amazing. If not, get a thunderbolt. It has tons of dev's working on it and they do make extended battery's.

First things first, go Verizon.
Battery life: get the iPhone
Speed: HTC Thunderbolt
Plus, as was mentioned, the TB has a ton of dev work on it so you could probably do a bit more.

DO NOT GET AN IPHONE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
That being said, go for either the thunderbolt or the evo. Both are excellent phones
Wow - many thanks for your responses!

If you are already an Android user, I'd stick with that. Final response for me: Thunderbolt

+1 for the Evo. Rom of choice, MIUI! No 4geez, but it is buttery smooth and battery life is superb. No data cap is pretty darn swell too, and Sprint seems to be pretty stinkin root friendly.
(Or hope your company allows the Evo 3D soon...)
Sprint - HTC EVO 4G I know HTC battery sucks but this was what I was going to get before we made the switch to Verizon
If you can, I would wait as long as possible, and see if any better choices come out before you need to upgrade. The Thunderbolt it a nice-ish phone, but it doesn't have dual-core...
Maybe if Motorola comes out with a new, dual-core, 4G phone, with an unlocked bootloader...and maybe a supermodel will knock on my door tonight...
