Sprint VS Verizon & Epic 4g Vs. Droid 2. - Epic 4G General

Ok so yesterday, i was setting up shortcuts to bookmarks for my fellow employess on there epics and one person with a droid 2.
First thing i noticed the droid 2 is ugly square weird looking device also has the ugliest looking dullest screen EVER!!!
The epics bookmarks look nice with a nice red ribbon the droids bookmark is an ugly gray box that has something in it which i couldnt tell what it was cause the screen was not vibrant/bright at all.
Overall seriously this super amoled screen is amazing compared to all other phones i compared however the evo and the incredible dont look too bad but Super amoled wins!!!!
Now to service on verizon, ugh 3 bars in a 5 bar area for sprint.
Now when i come across places with both full bars i opened up the browser loaded the web page sprint killed verizon in loading it.
In this somewhat a review...
Overall: Epic=Brightest Prettiest Screen EVER.
Sprint vs verizons service and 3g speeds= Sprint one
Just something i noticed today and i must say im happy with sprint and the epic just wish they would hurry up with the official froyo.

well... ok. that can be said about almost any phone's screen compared to the epic. truth is the only thing i'll miss when i get my next phone is going to be the amoled screen

Hes probaly fed up with the delay of froyo.
Im not im satified with my epic on 2.1 stock rooted with mobile ap and after looking at all my friends different screens and phones i love it!!! i played with sense and is pretty cool but launcher pro is still the best!!!
Im not in any hurry for froyo to come out til we have a working infrastructure hotspot!! I do like that noobnls already got 2.3 running!! cant wait for cm6 with infrastrucute wireless tether and even cm7 probaly no far along after the official source drops. but im in no hurry or going to ***** and whine cause i know my phone still blows all other phones out of the water.

Yeah, I have a friend with a Droid 2 and another with a Droid Incredible. Playing with both of their phones made me very happy with my Epic. Have to say at least here, Sprint's 3G is noticably faster than Verizon's. I'm 3 hours away from the nearest 4G market.

Same goes for the evo...I'll take a far superior screen and better gpu and wait for updates a few months longer if that's the choice.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Yes the Epic screen is ridiculous

Please do not do any more "reviews". You clearly do not know what you are doing and showing alot of bias, and you cannot compare the 2 netowrks from the area you are standing in and conclude one is better.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Verizon as a telco company is crap and their mobile department isn't much better. If it weren't for the fact that the lazy workers at verizon were unionized, BS contracts, and verizon's exclusive deal to provide the federal gov. with BB services, Verizon would be worse off than Microsoft in the mobile department right now.
/end rant

Well they prob are in pretty good shape right now, they have the new moto and lg dual core phones comin (not to mention the iphone also) along with their lte network.....they gotta be in good shape

If they're so bad how come they're the company we go roaming to when we have no signal? I mean damn yeah our phone may be better but you can't judge it based on phone with disimiliar parts and two different carriers. You can't say you would have posted this if you were in a dead zone and only the Droid 2 was working. I appreciate the review but the bias invalidates the evidence. In Journalism of any sort you limit yourself from a full bias. Partial do exist.

I don't know where you are but where I am, Verizon is King! My Sprint phone next to a Verizon phone is like a slug on 3G and I'm always roaming on Verizon. Even in my house, I can have 4 or 5 bars on Sprint, the out of no where, my Sprint signal drops to nothing and I'm roaming on Verizon with 3 bars. It seems, a 3 bar signal on Verizon is like having 5 bars on a Sprint phone... At least around here.
BTW, not all bars are equal, when comparing them on different phones. The reason is how the signal level is programmed to display. I'm thinking Samsung might like to show more bars then HTC, Motorola, or even a Blackberry at a given signal level. Maybe Sammy does this because their antennas suck!

then if verizon offers better coverage why not switch ?
I mean sometimes the way people choose their network is weird, i choose which has best coverage in the area im in. and as for phones , I choose which has the features I want.

Sprint coverage

So how do you like the sprint coverage in your area. My contract is up and att has better coverage in my area. Anything bad about att. There new htc evo clone is coming out soon.

If your poor sprint coverage is just a problem in your house you can let them know and they will send you an antenna that "piggy backs" off of your broadband. Will give you full bars in and around your house. But if your general region has bad signal a new carrier might be the answer.
What is this new AT&T evo clone you speak of?

Whatever coverage is best is what you should get. Company perks and phones don't mean anything if you can't use it.
As far as comparisons - Sprint is cheaper and has yearly upgrades. AT&T was just voted worst in every state in the US on it's network. Verizon is first, Sprint is second and T-Mobile is third.
The new htc phone is on att website. Its the same size as the evo with 16gb internal storage. It will also be able to use att lte whenever it rolls out.

You know I like you, I'm not bashing. But I have to ask.. Amidst all the discussion about Sprint changing their "Premier" program why would you, of all people, be selling others on yearly upgrades when that is available only to people who have the most expensive plans..
smh @ Sprint
OP- imo, Sprint is still the best service provider. If you get a spring Sprint signal then stock with them, just don't get your hopes up on that annual upgrade.

Only person that I get disconnected with is my wife....who still has at&t.

But it sounds like it is the Aluminum Uni-Body like the Desire HD which is pretty cool.
I love Sprint now that I have the Airave. When I moved to my new place, I had one bar if I was lucky, and it didn't make sense to walk out into the courtyard to make calls all the time. I just called to cancel due to lack of service, and was sent a free Airave. Set it up, and it's been the best thing ever.
OP, I just switched over from AT&T. My whole family has been on AT&T pretty much since they became a carrier. I've had their phones for at least 10 years. Loved my Tilt and Fuze to death but their service was horrible. My uncle has to drive 2 hours for work and would drop calls 4-5 times along the way. Since switching over to Sprint he's dropped none. I'd have the same call drop issue, even just sitting on my couch at home, no issue since coming to Sprint.
Also, just something an AT&T sales rep at a corporate store mentioned, AT&T is starting to worry about going out of business. From what the rep said, they're pretty sure most iPhone users will switch to Verizon once they get the phone. Mostly because of the poor customer service AT&T offers. Even the rep admitted that their way of looking at things was pretty much that they're the only carrier that offered the iPhone and could get away with the poor service since people wanted the phone so bad. Now with Verizon getting it, they're kind of SOL.
I don't know if the rep was just assuming things, or if that's something AT&T is truely concerned about. Either way, I won't be going back to them anytime soon - if ever.

Moto Atrix (Dual C) vs Epic

Just watched a demo of the MOTO Atrix dual core....wow the scrolling is horrible. Side by side with the Epic, the differences are HUGE! It's hard not to smile knowing that the EPIC still dominates even dual core offerings.
I noticed it's an ATT "4G" phone, so after going to ATT site and clicking their 4G link, it took me to a map of blue colored coverage, which oddly enough looks EXACTLY like their 3G coverage. Upon further examination, that's EXACTLY what they show you, the 3G coverage. There are but a small handful of cities that actually implement TMOs HSPA+ '4G'. Just like apple, att using their 'full of ****' marketing practices. It's really sad how much $ apple and att has made selling inferior hardware and service for twice that of which I pay for the Epic on Sprint.
I have 2 Epics, with unlimited everything (except the landline 1500min pool), and both phones plans combined is cheaper than 1 iphone with unlimited everything, except the 4GB worth of data. And that's 3G data!
Man that's so sad. I can't believe how many fools there are out there.
Samsung can't get Froyo right to save their life, but even the Eclair Epic is a better choice than the Atrix.
Atrix makes sammiches tho
Atrix? Meh.

My friend who I have known for 8 years bought the Atrix with the Dock and everything spending $500+. Personally, I would have not invested so much in a device that is not going to easy to make custom kernel's for. Matter of fact, its a locked boot loader which means you are screwed. Even Cyanogen himself said today that he would support the device had it not been for that fact. Still, its kinda cool, but makes developing for it a lot ( LOT ) harder than it should be.
Yet they make the XOOM developer friendly. Go figure, why would they not choose this with the phone? Do we have the provider to blame? Is it what they want for their phone systems, or are we just being put to a test to see how far developers can push the envelope with the newest phones to make custom roms/kernels?

Honestly, I can not stand AT&T. They have the same pricing as Verizon, yet they're inferior (network wise) to Sprint. The only reason they had a chance in the mobile market industry is because of the iPhone (which I still prefer Android over).
Now that Verizon has iPhone, ATT will probably be bought out by another carrier, or something weird.

LOL -- ATT....did someone just defend ATTs service???
Sprint's CLEAR division has LTE in Phoenix running 100Mb down and peak 47Mb uploads.........ATT probably runs their whole network off of one of the LTE connections.
There will always be someone who lives in a dead zone. WiMax ins't there yet, but between Sprint and Verizon's networks, Phoenix couldn't be covered any better. Roms allow for forced roam, which I had on my WinMo 6.5 phone.....and could switch between networks and roam 3G if I had a Sprint issue. It made for the most robust phone I've ever seen anyone in possession of (TP2 was quad band).

Their 'enhanced' 3G is quite fast....Got over 5Mb on my sisters Samsung Tab sitting 100ft in front of the tower....2Mb up. Damn't Sprint, unlock our WiMax UPLOAD already.......bandwidth is clearly available up and down, it won't do jack to the network if they let us full duplex. I mean, it's a phone..... I couldn't imagine FB pic uploads swamping the network with just a fraction of the HD YouTube streaming

Almost all store employees are dumb at any carrier.
What counts for sprint and tmobile is that they dont disconnect your service if you dont pay wkthing 2-3 days.I can be 2 weeks late with sprint and not get charged extra and not even have a warning from sprint.
Plus on sprint and tmobile I can download 80gb of movies a month, they dont have data cap.So if you use your phone as your primary internet then tmo and sprint is only choices.
I just wish I dint leave tmobile for sprint because speed was way faster on tmobile, and my promised sprint's 4g never came.

Because the frequency band they are using currently...lte technology benefits exponentially on wider frequencies...fastest they can get on 5ghz is around 25mbps

Because a phone is a phone. If it does what it is supposed to do, why complain? We buy phones for what they do; whatever they'll be capable of later after updates is just a plus.
Bow chika wah wah
Why stick with Verizon? Because they're still by far the best nationwide carrier. Let's compare:
Sprint: Good satisfaction ratings, reliable network, lower prices. But their coverage isn't perfect, and they have a 4G network that's already outdated.
T-Mobile: Generally good satisfaction ratings, low prices. But like Sprint, their coverage is sub-par. Fake 4G (HSPA+) network, and doesn't even plan to develop a real 4G network for a few years. Likely will soon be part of AT&T.
AT&T: Terrible satisfaction ratings; the only carrier that's actually getting worse. Unreliable network. Has begun work on an actual 4G network (despite advertising HSPA+ as 4G like T-Mobile), but it's not active anywhere yet. Oh, and if you want to talk about mistreating Android: did you know that until just last month they didn't allow sideloading of apps?
Verizon: Has the widest-ranging, most reliable network. Tops consumer satisfaction ratings year after year (though Sprint is catching up). Has the fastest and most advanced (in both technology and deployment) 4G network, by far. And believe it or not, Verizon actually tends to be a bit more customer-friendly than other carriers. For example: they were the first to prorate early termination fees, and while they will eventually have capped data plans they've also said they'll roll out shared family data plans, something nobody else has talked about.
The consumer satisfaction ratings I'm citing, by the way, are Consumer Reports' -- you could probably find them via some Googling.
What motivates you guys to give money to either samsung or verizon after the the crap they've pulled with the fascinate?

Why?
1 look at our options. Inferior screens across the board. Singlecored great phones for now, but what about next year. Overall design, few other phones are as sleek.
2 community development. Other than the nexus series or og droid, what other phone has been this great for customizing. Yes I know the driver issues are crap, but have you ever seen a bricked sgs without physical damage?
3 verizon for much of the country is the only choice. I'm not happy about it but there are simply no other options for some. If I found out tmo worked in my area I would drop verizon today.
4 and last, it seems manufactures are learning. samsung donating a sgs2 to the cyan team might just might indicate a reversal in previous ways of thinking.
If nothing else, it comes back to what other choice is there. Name any other option and there is a list of cons to go with it.

Wrong! We've hit 57mbps. Reason why it'll be slower speeds is because it will be "real world" with multiple users as apposed to 1 user testing the max speeds. Also they are going to cap the data throughput.

So AT&T 4G LTE is hitting NYC.

I just about talked myself into ordering a GSM/HSPA GNote. Knowing that AT&T's 4G LTE was coming, but was probably months if not a year or 2 away from my area (USA, NY/NJ).
But just very recently I'm reading that AT&T unofficially "flipped the switch on" for LTE in some areas of New York City. Unfortunately the GNote's 4G won't be able to utilize LTE.
Yeah, I know 4G/HSPA+ is still decently fast...But a big part of the reason for me going GNote in the first place is for getting the latest and greatest. And with a radio that ain't going to be compatible with something that's already starting to come out, man that's just killing me!
So now I either wait for a Verizon version to hit the US shores (I'd rather NOT go with them!) or look at "skimping" back down to a smaller screen with the GNexus.
The LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus only works on Verizon. Honestly, I'd stick with the Galaxy Note until actually using LTE doesn't murder your battery or put you over a data cap.

There has been no information released to today that specifically indicates the Note will have LTE when/if it does comes to ATT. It has been seen at the FCC with the normal assortment of bands, but the only thing different was NOT the inclusion of LTE, rather a change in the model number (they added B) this could indicate as well that they took the physical button away as they did with the SG2.
No one but Sammy and ATT can say for sure that if/when the Note comes to the US that it will sport ATT's LTE network.

Have you been able to use it yet? Anyway that you can get a pic of just the front screen, or something showing ATT logo?
in for pics, this is great news for me, buuuut....i really wish the front face was blank. the samsung logo is annoying enough
If AT&T gets an LTE Note it will be Qualcomm, if people thought it felt slow in the Skyrocket... a screen with the Note's resolution will not be fun. I say hold off on LTE until gen 2 chipsets are out.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I don't find the Skyrocket slow at all, much quicker than my brother's ATT GS2. Some of you just look for things to complain about.
Seeking. Did you ever find a time to get some pictures of that Samsung Note for AT&T? I am really looking forward to it coming to AT&T. My upgrade is due up shortly.
I believe that guy was lying, or got scared. He has removed both posts that he made in reference to the ATT version.
Since he disappeared and never showed a pic, here is another story confirming the Note is headed for AT&T with LTE and the Snapdragon processor, along with a picture of it with four soft buttons. However there's something taped to it, presumably covering up the AT&T logo.

The Note LTE won't be the latest and greatest, it may actually be worse than the IshitPhone 4S.
The snapdragon processor is the ONLY SoC that works in LTE phones.
The snapdragon is laggy, inconsistant, and just not a good chipset.
Plus AT&T throttles you if you use too much data too fast, so no thank you. Good luck getting dev support too. The butchered snapdragon LTE **** Note will not be able to use our ROMs or Kernels.
The Galaxy Note LT**** is a no go for me.

Whats the matter with you? **** this **** that. No need to speak like that here.
BTW have you tried LTE? I have, on a Skyrocket and it is incredible. I may trade my Note in to get the AT&T one with LTE. side by side tests put the SKY TEN TIMES faster than the Note, and for some weird reason 2x as fast in non LTE and even wifi. I suspect they have made other changes to the radio that make it faster than what we have in the Note (but I cant prove this).
The only reason I wouldnt is the 4 capacitive buttons. Not that I dont like those (stops dirt getting caught there) but on this device, one handed, its far easier to hit the central button than the power button.

Everyone created clever names for overrated and generally crappy phones. For example, your phone the "****rocket" or an iphone, the "I****".
On a phone you would never notice 30-50mb downstream speeds unless you are downloading a movie, etc.
The slight speed advantage you receive from LTE over the Note is cancelled out by the Snapdragon. It seems you ignored the main part of my post saying that the Snapdragon is a TERRIBLE SoC. On the ****rocket and the T-mo SGSII, UI lag is prevalent as well as laggy transitions, and unreliable game performance.
The quadrant scores on ANY app reveal the unsteadiness of the Snapdragon when compared to the OG At&t SGSII. Many people including myself have tried the Vivid and the ****rocket and have noticed visible lag when going thru day to day tasks. I went to my local corporate store and tried one on the release day, I asked the rep and he said the model was not defective and then I tried my buddy's ****rocket and it was just as laggy. He ended up buying my OG S2 from me.
Another thing that will stop me from buying any LTE phone besides the fact that they all have Snapdragon SoC's is the butchering done by At&t to ALL their devices but especially to LTE devices.
I owned an AT&T OG SGSII and we had a decent 10-12 well known developers with nice ROMs. Then I took a look at the Skyrocket forums a couple days ago and saw 1 well known dev and another dev asking for donations...
It will be the same with the LTE Note, except most likely worse. That is very unsettling especially since the LTE Note is most likely not shipping with ICS unless its release is in Q2 2012. Then all buyers will be stuck on Gingerbread till someone ports it.
But yup, have fun with those speeds, I doubt those internet speeds will help you much in day to day activites on your phone but okay... Have fun waiting a year for ICS!

Now adays, att and the term **** go hand and hand. Sooner or later att will replace that word in meaning. Att has been moving to an iphone only serve. Att has been dead last with the newest android and windows offerings. It seems that att only caters to iphone users and is limiting bandwith to cater to the may iphone users. Until apple releases a 4g lte version of the iphone, thier lte network is not a priority.
Can't wait. Only an LTE Nexus on AT&T could make think twice about the Note.

Exactly...
On my Note, when I hit 10gigs of data, I got throttled even though it was day 29 of my billing cycle.
But... On my Iphone I used like 20gigs a month and never got throttled.
As long as the "Apple Cheerleader Effect" lives on, No cell company will ever cater to Android users.

anyone seen any network improvements?

All I heard was how sprints network is getting fast and blah blah blah but has anyone seen speeds that are actually faster? Mid Ga doesn't seem any better. I looked at the sight and see upgrades being done but I can't tell at all. Am I crazy or am I getting ransacked

Same place. They show upgrades happening but I don't see it. Its frustrating. I have 6 towers near me and get pathetic to OK coverage on base, but off bade its pretty good. Problem is I used to be on Verizon and they are strong in my area. I hate to switch back but I been w spring almost 2 years now, my wife has been w them 7 years. I am pretty close to cancelling this and moving on. I really like sprints line of phones but w 3 lines, I feel I can do better unless they have real changes they are making. I am holding on to the hold of the 800mhz I have seen floating around and was under the impression that that's what network vision was bringing me. Now 5 months after talk of it...still no great data. When everyone on Verizon is sucking data slam up. A consistent 1mb where ever I go isn't extreme to me when that's pretty much how Verizon treated me years ago. Now all my Verizon friends at seeing 2+mb
Same here...they upgrade some sites but nothing gets better. Even tech support said they upgraded one tower and was able to give me details. Still sub 100 kilobit speeds from this tower.
Well according to sprint next month I should have better service... needless to say if I dont see any difference then I'm gone cause I work 50+ hours a week and have no service wat so ever so if no improve bye bye sprint

Where I live it's a struggle to get over 100 kbit on the 3g and 1 mbit on the 4g when it's available but It is better than AT&T.
Sprint unlimited is a joke, it's like offering unlimited mileage on an auto lease and then you find out it's a yugo that can't go much faster than 1 mph.
I can't break 1 gig a month because the data rates are so slow.
My plan is to drop sprint when my contract is up. You can sign a new contact and get cheaper prices on high end phones.
Wow 100kb? Yuck, I would have left them long ago. Hell, I roam at 130kb! I know sorta because I work on an air force base and in some spots data is non existent. I may ride it out until June...if it isn't happening, I have to leave sprint. Too bad they don't read forums haha. Hurry up Sprint! Stop buying iPhones and buy some damn towers!

I noticed my 4g signal ha become stronger over the past six months. This week I found I no longer lose 4g in the backroom at work and my 3g has started working a tad more in areas there was once none. Overall speed is the same just more coverage.

That's positive. Hopefully something will come to my area soon . I was fishing for feedback. I do like sprints price. And have always had voice coverage, hopefully data coverage expands here
Its all about location. Sprint service isn't that bad guys.... I get great service in Omaha, NE .. however... 4g is virtually non-existent, which is retarded considering im required to pay for it. I have had verizon, alltel (when it existed), StraightTalk, AT&T.... I would say Sprint and StraightTalk (YES STRAIGHT TALK) provided the best service for me in terms of dropped calls and data. AT&T is a joke.
When I was using straight talk I had their nokia smart phone....if I recall correctly.... im pretty sure their 3g service ran off verizon towers, im not sure though.
A tower was marked recently as having recieved a data speed upgrade within the past 6 months near my niece's high school. We were there for a basketball game, 6pm to about 8pm at night on thursday. I did a speed test and saw 1200kbps. I was impressed. By my house it is still 200-300kbps at times dipping down to less than 100 or in the middle of the night peaking around 450.
From the looks of things the upgrades should be heading towards towers in my area soon. I am curious to see how it goes, as I would love to get better 3g speeds. I have some crappy 4g right now but its so spotty and the battery drain so significant 4g is just pointless to me.
Is there a site like this for Verizon? In case someone would like to (hypothetically) change prl's and force roam to Verizon in certain areas? It would be handy to know.

3G is gotten lil better.
Better where I am at. Nothing like what I would like but better.... on the funny side, My brother is staying with us and he has Verizon, talk about slow service in this area. You can cry and ***** all you want, all carriers will have problems. Why not over pay for them. lol
Mines slower. After the EL30 update. Modem issues thou. I hope not, I like the latest and greatest.
I live in Los Angeles. I've noticed my 4g improve in reliability, but decrease in speed.
My 3g is abysmal. Like, almost worthless. Once in a blue moon I'll get 200+ kb/s, but usually it is sub 100.
Calls/texts are generally fine though.

I'm not seeing a huge problem with Sprint, I did 3 tests like this and they all came out roughly this fast. I live in the Twin Cities in Minnesota and I can stream Pandora without any interruptions back and forth from my 40 min commute. When I head to my dads place (its 3 hours away in the middle of nowhere) I can still stream Pandora basically skipless the whole way. I hardly ever use 4g though since its a battery suck and overkill 99% of the time, and it doesn't reach into my apartment . I also don't roam very often, automatic system select rarely works with data without some fiddling. I only use roaming at my dad's house since verizon is the only provider out there. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with Sprint
