Just updated OTA to 1.22.531.8 - G2 and Desire Z General

I got my phone about 4 days ago so I just received this update.
After updating, everything works except for the fact that I no longer have data. The "H" is not showing up and I can't connect to any apps that require the internet... how do I fix this?
EDIT:
However, when I turn on Edge / 2g, then internet works...

Return the phone to T-mobile. Call them up and let them know you're having troubles with the update.
Edit - Have you gone over the 5 gig limit and you're capped?

There's a 5gig limit?
I thought the data plan was unlimited data...
Like I said, Edge works fine when I turn it on, but I'm paying for 3g... it'd be stupid to just let it be. I guess I'll stop by the Tmobile store if it doesnt fix itself

It is unlimited data but they can decide how fast that data is. Did you actually go over the limit?

FWIW. When you go ever the limit 3g or H is still displayed, but the actual speed is like edge.

5gb cap true or not?

Okay so ive read topics where tmobile will slow down your speed if you go above 5gb in data usage. Well i went above that (im at 5.3gb) 2 nights ago and its only my 2nd week into my billing cycle. This is because i tether my xbox to play live, i give people wifi for their laptops etc. So my question is, do they really slow you down? My speeds are H connections and havent slowed down at all. And why give people phones and they pay for unlimited data only to have it slowed down if they exceed an x amount and have them pay an EXTRA $15 for an added tether feature?

Id say consider yourself lucky your speed hasn't been "choked" down a little. Its all part of TS you agreed to when you signed up.

5GB cap applies to new contracts and customers start with T-Mobile, pre-existing customer have the 10 GB cap with throttling.

F that. The only time I've done that is when I've been traveling and needed access and someone else needed access as well. Otherwise, pay up.
The people I give wifi to is like my family. I don't give random people wifi.
And believe it or not hspa+ speeds on the g2 is way quicker than my actual internet

when you get throttled down, you'll know it. every time i hit 5 gigs, i get slowed down. it's been happening to me ever since the nexus one. i haven't heard of the 10 gig thing, but the 5 did happen to me. when it did happen on the nexus one for me, it would still show 3g. but i'll get edge speed only, and it's a pain. but you can surf regular web stuff just fine. it's the videos that'll kill ya. i haven't hit 5 gigs on the g2 yet and not planning to. but hey, at least they throttle you down instead of charging you extra per mb.
I think it has begun. A couple days ago I received a text from tmo saying my speeds would be slowed through the remainder of the billing cycle. I have always been a heavy user and used to tether my Nexus every night at work. I am only at about 6Gbs this billing cycle so I hardly think it is excessive. I hit 14Gbs a couple months ago and never got this message.

Your right at last they don't charge you extra but if they did, that would be against the law because if we pay for unlimited, we pay to use unlimited. So they can't charge extra for going over a certain amount

T-Mobile just started recently to throttle the downspeed. However, at least that's what is announced, you should receive a text message informing you about the throttling.

Is it possible to get charged for data without a plan?

I bought my Vibrant unlocked, and I don't have a data plan of any sort, though I do have messaging. I noticed that if I disable data through the *#*#4636#*#* menu, I'm unable to send or receive MMS. However, when I have data enabled, the 3G icon appears and has the flashing arrows. In addition, when I go into the browser and try to load any page, it takes me to a web2go website. I'm worried that I might be charged for data, so my question is: will I?
no u will not

By even more plus you mean off contract right?
Their new prepaid plans actually give you 1500 minutes or texts and like 30 megs of EDGE data. It's enough for email and browsing. Not a bad deal at all if you ask me.
dont' worry mate u wont' get charged
Yes it is possible, T-Mobile has a sneaky way of charging even without a plan. If you access data, they charge you per megabit or megabyte or something like that, even if you don't have a plan.
You can go onto t-mobile.com and access your account, and completely turn off the option to ever access data.

NO, I'm not wrong, I have 5 lines on my account, only two have a data plan. The other 3 lines were being charged per use data fee because the people who have those phones were using the internet on the phone, I think it was per megabyte or megabit I'm not sure.
I had to call in and complain several times until I got a supervisor that explained to me that even without a data plan, if the internet is accessed you get charged for the bandwith usage. She showed me how to log onto my t-mobile and completely turn off access to data, and they reversed the fees.

[Q] MyTouch 4G unlimited 4G?

I've been looking over a few threads here about the soft data caps that T-Mobile uses. I'm aware about how it works and everything but I've found something kind of odd. I've seen a couple of posts about other people having some success with it.
Over the past 3 or 4 months my phone has been my primary internet connection by using the hotspot feature. This phone is completely stock (non rooted, no custom roms, etc) and within a few days of my new billing cycle I would hit the 5GB data limit for my plan. Out of frustration I turned off WCDMA/GSM auto to GSM to see if it would work faster. I turned it back to auto after a day or two and found that I had been un-throttled. I would check the My Account app on my phone and it would state that I had been throttled but everything is working on 4G speeds.
So this month just out of curiosity I've been using as much data as possible just to see if anything will be done. I'm not trying to be a data hog or anything, this is just out of curiosity. I'm 7 days into my billing cycle and have used over 22 gigs and still going strong. I'm currently streaming Netflix in HD and have two laptops and another smart phone using the data.
Does anyone know if I'll see a cease and desist letter from T-Mobile or if anything at all will happen?
Side note: This phone/T-Mobile has really surprised me with the speeds and capabilities it has. I used an iPhone4 with AT&T to stream Netflix and the quality and buffering was horrendous in comparison.
This sounds extremely beautiful to me as I bought the 10$ 200mb and I blow through that in less then a day. If this works you would not believe how happy this would make me. As for T-Mobile doing a cease and desist order I would highly doubt it. When I had a T-Mobile dash 2 years ago, without a data plan I was able to connect to the internet free of charge, and I would watch youtube Justin.tv and so on. I did this for almost 1 and a half years and have seen nothing from T-Mobile.
so basically, all you did was turn it to only GSM for a day or two, and then back on and the throttle went away?
Im gonna try the same thing and see what kinda speeds im getting after I turn it back on. 5gigs goes really quick and throttled speeds suck, Drives me crazy.. Ill get back with my results..
Subscribing to this... I just got a throttle boner. If this turns out to work for other folks I will seriously **** my pants. I had to upgrade to the $60 10gb plan bc I have been using this as my primary internet.

Haha I remember this hack from the G1 days, when people used over 2gb data at that time. It actually works, it tricks the system I guess. I thought tmo patched it.

Just an update on my usage. I've attached a screenshot of the amount of data that I've used so far from the monitor usage section of mytmobile.com
Also a speedtest that I ran just now just to see what it's running at. Right now usually seems around peak time, the ping and download speed is usually a bit faster at night.

That's what I was going to have to do to try to avoid being throttled. If you get a chance to try it out let me know what happens.
If anyone else does want to try this if you could let me know what happens. Also if you could let me know the phone model, current data plan, and anything else that you think may be important. I'm curious to know if it is my phone, the MyTouch 4G's in general, or what. I don't know anyone else with a smart phone with T-Mobile that cares about this so if anyone could provide any feedback on this it would be great.
My refill minutes and data just started today and I'm already at 1 gig will probably report back next Sunday
I have gotten the "5gb throttle" text from T-Mobile a couple times but I have never been throttled and that's without doing this "trick". I've never done anything and still seem to not get throttled even tho I've gotten the texts saying they were going to throttle me for the remainder of my cycle. It did it on my MT4G and its also doing it on my Sensation now. Maybe I'm just lucky.
*knocks on wood*
Im trying this asap...I run a shoutcast radio station (limbik frequencies if anyone cares to know) and I drive a truck all night so have been listening via the 4g while i drive...needless to say I run out of data in no time. Even if I upgraded to the 5gb plan (which is the highest they offer me) I'd still run out...1mb per minute, 5-9 hours a night....doesn't add up right! Worst part is that its a nonprofit station that AOL pays for our bandwidth to stream...seriously I shouldn't have to pay out the ass to make sure its running and simultaneously enjoy it!

[Q] Simple Mobile

I have simple mobile now, its awesome for the price and prepay, plus they boast about bring your own phone, so its good. But i only get 115k download speed when testing with the speedtest.net app. I get 200 - 300k upload. It is not displaying 1x mode, it says, 3G and H when i have it on mobile, not 1x or E.
SO, the question is is this something I'm doing, or not doing, that I get such bad speeds?
Its pretty good for the price, $40/mo. unlimited 3G, $60/mo. for unlimited 4G, but its not available in my area for 4G yet...
Is this a normal speed for this carrier? I used to have att gophone prepay but that sucked. Also... simple mobile is tmobile and to set it up you just have to select the apn from the settings once the sim's unlocked. Its the absolute simplest set up there is. But I just wish i could do better speeds... I'm wondering if this is normal for my phone or what. thanks
I also use Simple Mobile. Their $40 unlimited 3G plan is capped around 120kbps on the download. You'll actually get faster speeds on EDGE. The only way to get actual 3G+ speeds with Simple Mobile is to get the $60 4G plan. I think calling the $40 plan 3G is a scam, but it's still not that bad of a price at $60/month.
thanks for that bit of knowledge. well, looks like i'm going to upgrade then. I will be pleased. Then maybe one day I'll wake up and it will be on 4G.
switched to 2g only, edge, and I'll be darned, its faster. 156kbps, 215 upload. But its kinda sticky, what i mean is it will go 156 then drop off, then pick back up again. But I suppose that this might work. I just want it for jango music app, to stream music while i drive. NICE!
Just would like to add that if your phone displayed H at some point, that means 4G speed is available in your area. Upgrade your plan and never look back lol

As I'm sure you can understand, I am quite a bit excited!
Now, it has displayed the HSDPA+ icon, (H) and it displays 3G icon. (CM7)
I used to have t-mobile 4G service, but they said it was not available in my area. I never saw a 4G icon, but i used to see H all the time.
Now, I do see an H, and a 3G, they flash back and forth. I seem to remember it staying solid on H and very rarely would I see a 3G icon, but its been a while since I had my tmobile service turned up.
But when i use the net, it does the H icon with both arrows sending and receiving. At any rate, I've decided to go ahead and pay for the $60/mo plan and unlock my speeds. At that price, it just can't be beat. Its so reasonable and they are so pleasant and support you hacking ur own phones. i'm so happy i found these fellaz. I am even signing up with their dealer program.
EDIT: Oh and I just wanted to add that they even have website instructions to change your APN settings... even though they come preloaded and all you have to do is select it from the settings menu. They will even walk you through it. Not sure about if they will help you root and unlock sim, but you can always ask.
BS
Well, after having simple mobile for the second month, and this is only the first month having the 4g (aka $60 plan).
It caps at 2GB of data then you are limited to 125Kbps max download. I called and they said the limit was 7GB. But I sware to you, same ROM's that worked dropped off the speed and they told me it was my phone... Now this is all normal, but they didnt even troubleshoot me at all, just told me it was my phone, i said it has the same problem with other phones, and my phone works on other sim cards at full speed. (so I guess they think my phone broke in a way where after 2GB it just couldnt get over the 125KBPS mark.)
So i go to look at t-mobile's homepage, cause thats who simple is, and low and behold for $60 you get unlimited all except after 2GB you get 3g Speeds... its all there in month by month plans on t-mobile's website. What a coincidence!!! I was told there was no limits at all any way. WHAT A LIE!
So all simple does is allow you to use a phone that t-mobile might have banned due to bad ESN or IMSI or w/e (serial number) and they get money for reselling t-mo junk.
So you only get 2gb of 4G then you will be limit to 125KBPS not even real 3g. They will lie to you and hang up, no refunds, no credits, no working with you.
They really made me mad how they told me I was downloading too much, they tried to put the blame on me. I asked them how much is too much!? and got real mad at that and they dropped that spiel quick. 2GB is nothing. Especially when you stream music in your car, the whole reason i have the thing. At 125KBPS i cant listen to a song in last.fm without it having to buffer for 5 minutes.... thats 2 songs in one buffer.
So I ended up asking for a credit or refund, they laughed (rude) and said they dont do refunds. I told them my credit card company does disputes. After winning the last 4 disputes against these lying cell companies, and with my proof, I guarantee they will do THIS refund!
I say just get tmobile prepaid. 60$ unlimited everything with 4g speeds up to 2gb and 70$ 4g speeds up to 5gb

[Q] Go Smart Mobile Web Issue in California

Hello Everyone
I switched from Straight talk to Gosmartmobile $45 plant to my nexus 4. But since day 1 data is not active and i called their customer service and they said they are having problem in whole California.
Also i see once you insert your sim card phone has default APN setting from T-Mobile which shows H on signal bar but no actitivity but in real that is not the APN for go smart mobile. Then i modify APN according to their website and no data at all.
I call them again and they said wait till Monday if it doesn't resolve we look into it.
are there any other people having same issue?

Actually data started working since monday and i am happy with it.
Anybody else using the Nexus 4 with Go Smart Mobile? This op is the only person I've seen and I'm curious to know if there are others.
They market data as 3G, which means the throttle your HSPA+42 connection from the very first bite of data.
My old 3G Nexus S HSPA 7.2 was getting about 5.5 Mbps down, and I have read GoSmart is around 1 Mbps down.
No thanks, there are plenty MVNO's with better (4G) data speeds.

Thanks. Would that be .8 Mbps/sec? Is that the 2G or 3G plan? If 2G, that would be quite speedy for 2G isn't it?
