Hi there, Fascinate people!
I have a Captivate on AT&T (a.k.a. the my-signal-runs-away-from-buildings carrier). One of my absolute favorite features of my phone--a feature I had believed was common to all Galaxy S models--is the seemingly indestructible Gorilla Glass screen. I've carried this phone naked in my pocket for months now and the screen is still perfect!
A friend of mine liked my Captivate so much that she purchased a Fascinate as her very first smartphone. She put a screen protector and a case on it (two safety mechanisms I've blatantly rejected in favor of the uberslim Captivate), but not two days after purchasing the phone, she had scratch marks in the glass, below the screen protector in the soft button area. Granted, she has probably been carrying the device in her purse, but nonetheless I was blown away by this! I inspected it further today, and it actually looks like the scratching may be below the surface of the glass.
So my question is this: wtf? Is the Fascinate screen wimpier than the rest of the Galaxy S line? Is it possible that dust entered the phone and scratched the surface below the glass surface? Is this the sort of thing she might get an exchange for? Has anybody else experienced this, especially so quickly after purchasing?
Thanks for all of your help!
Ask the someone who knows... Ask samsung... I have no idea.
This just sounds like you are blaming us for your friend's woes. I feel like giving you the benefit of the doubt for now.
Anyways, ask them or VZW.
I haven't had any issues that you mention.
I've dropped my phone and had it unprotected since I bought it and it still looks brand new. No idea what's up with your friends phone.

The fascinate does have gorilla glass. It holds up to a lot of abuse: you can't scratch out with keys, etc.
I can't speak to scratches below the screen, never seen anything like that.
Gorilla glass can be scratched (especially by any form of sand, which is more common than you might expect), and it can shatter. This is discussed in the accessories thread.
You also have a few options if you want to keep your phone thin. Look into steinheil, real look etc.screen protectors, also discussed in accessories.
Sorry to hear about your friend's screen. Tender care and a soft clean pocket will get you pretty far, but the back cover especially will scratch up on you no matter how careful you are. Fortunately the back is cheap to replace.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.

Right! This was the video demonstration I'd seen, so I was very confused! Sand makes perfect sense! She was near a beach for a few days immediately after getting the phone. Thanks!!

Jewelry is a common scratcher too.
I have a screen protector on my phone, just in case... its an invisible shield, so it covers the whole screen. I passed on the VZW ones because I figured it just covered only the screen, but the invisible shields do have an orange peel kinda look to them.
I have been carrying my fascinate since launch unprotected in my pocket, and my screen is still flawless! I just bought a protector from a local uscc store for the mesmerize that covers the whole screen yesterday! 3 in a pack for $14.95, they fit well (except for maybe 16th of an in. at the edges) and they cover the whole screen!
2 small scratches and 1 small scuff mark on my screen and i have been VERY careful with this phone. not that impressed with the glass. took me weeks to scratch the screen on my TP carrying it the same way i carry the SF. i need to pick up a protector just to prevent any more marks.
Dude I want to kill myself right now. Got two 1cm scratches on the middle bottom of my xoom. Not noticeable when the screen is on but jesus christ. It was with a ****en water bottle no metal.
I'm dying inside, need help. Anyway of minimizing this?
I bought this from verizon the day of release, is it possible to return and cancel contract? This sounds rediculous but I would love to restart the whole purchase process......****KKKKK

Hey that rhymes
Small particles which are harder than gorilla glass can stick to either the glass surface or the plastic surface of your water bottle. Accidentally rub them into the glass with the water bottle and you can definitely scratch the glass.
Gorilla glass absolutely requires a screen protector.
As for the return, most places just make sure the serial number matches and the parts are in the box (cables, charger, etc). Never had anyone look closely at the display. Though if they saw it, I'm sure they would reject the return.
any suggestions? ive thought about saying there is a defect in the software/hardware...to do an exchange..or purchasing one off contacting and switching?!
help me people..HELP MEE
If it's not noticeable when you're using it I'm sure you'll forget about it. No need to lie.
Calm down and take a few days to think about if you really care that much.

And there are other people who have scratched such screens. It can happen. So why bother risking it when a screen protector can be had for under $10? Well maybe under $20 for a tablet.
i agree with the others: don't take it back to the store just because of 2 tiny scratches. With time, you will forget it. If it's not really visible when using, why stress? It's hard for you to go to sleep knowing that your xoom is not being used with a scratch on it?
I remember when I scratched the hell out of my 42-inch plasma tv when I was moving a few years ago. I was so upset, especially at the guy who let the door close on the screen. Once the tv was turned on, couldn't see the scratch, so I stopped worrying and my stress levels went down dramatically

Whatever you try be careful as you may cause more damage. Personally, I would try a small amount of toothpaste on a microfiber cloth. This method completely removed a scratch on my Epic 4G (Gorilla glass).
I'm actually pretty surprised by this.
My Samsung Vibrant has gorilla glass and has taken a serious pounding from not even caring about the keys in my pocket to actually falling face down on the sidewalk.
This is why I got insurance on my Xoom from BB.
it was a PLASTIC poland spring bottle.
im so sick to my stomach over the purchase amount and how fast it scratched. its disheartning...i mean, i have a nexus S now too (dropped 524 for it) and it doesnt have anything...
granted..i left the bottle in my duffle bag with my xoom, but seriously...nothing else in there..i guess i am freaking out but i dont get it.
i know its a low life move but im within my 14days return policy and maybe i can get away with making up false claims of software issues without the technician being too penetrating in operating it...and if so..ill walk away, head in lap, and accept the scratches.
ill post the damn pictures of it right now

Good luck man, I'd be rright there with you if that happened to me. It is your own idiocracy for not having a screen protector on I left the plastin on that said where the volume and whatnot on my xoom for two days till I got a screen protector.
But either way I'm rooting for you, let me know how things turn out.
And for the haters I know its his fault and it really don't effect anything significant, but can you honestly say you wouldn't try the same thing? I mean its not like he had it in a bag with a handful of coins, it was a water bottle, imagine that being you. Trying to be all healthy by drinking water only for it to turn on you and chomp up your new multi hundred dollar device's screen.
Now the real story, you left it in a duffel bag unprotected? I did that once with my kindle and the screen cracked. What do you expect will happen?
long story short, xoom dropped directly on its corner in the gel case and spider the glass. what are my options to get this fixed.
Edit: add a picture of the Xoom, cuz who dosent like to something beautiful destroyed. so sad to my man purse will be here tomorrow, one day late ...
Edit: so all in all it seems in the end im going with motorola, they have said they will fix if $200 cold hard cash. best price i can find

Call and find out?
Man that sucks, well the good news is you bought one of the easiest devices to take apart, if you don't have a Verizon contract I would look to you homeowners insurance to see if they would cover replacement, if renting possibly rental insurance, otherwise I would check with the manufacturer, in this case Motorola or Gorilla Glass about either fixing it or a replacement part, again since you have the advantage of a unit that is fairly simple to break down you should be able to do it yourself; there are already several parts breakdowns on the web. Good luck.
I should note it would also depend on whether you just broke the outside glass or the LCD display itself, if only the glass, probably easy, if the LCD display, well that might involve some soldering, hopefully a connector.

I'd also try 3rd-party iPad repair services and see if any can service you, or give you pointers as to where to go. There are already millions of iPads out in the field, and cracked glass damage is probably the most common.
You can start here, http://google.com/search?q=ipad+glass+repair
Alternatively, a more direct route, http://google.com/search?q=xoom+glass+repair

gorilla glass is basically high tension glass which resists scratches. but because of internal high tension it cracks easier than regular glass. see iphone4 back glass breakages. while it resists scratches, if scratched it shatters/cracks easily.
Corning dips each sheet into a molten salt bath where a chemical exchange occurs. Potassium ions are infused into the glass. At the same time, sodium ions exit the glass. The potassium ions are larger than the sodium ions. This pressure creates what's called "compressive stress". That stress is actually a good thing and stops the glass from breaking on flaws.

What About Bullet proof Glass. Then again I Guess it would Depend on how big the Drop is
@TeeQ
Man, that really sucks! I would be pissed off. But there may be some hope? The warranty states that any accident, abuse, etc.. is not covered. Now, since this is a very new device, Motorola may sympathize the situation. Just give them a call, and explain what happened. It can't hurt. And if you're respectful they may find a way around the "fine print". If they don't honor the warranty, then I guess the best option would be to use some insurance policy you may have, as a previous user had suggested. So, before you get ripped from some 'service repair shop', call Motorola. And don't lie. Just be honest and kind.
Good luck!

Bullet proof glass isn't exactly glass though. It's layers of glass and composites that are sandwiched together. If you did drop a piece on it's corner it would probably shatter the glass portion, but wouldn't break. Glass would just be spider webbed.
Did you buy it on a credit card? Some have protection plans, like Amex does 90 days accidental damage protection and theft protection. Might be worth looking into. I use it for all my big electronic purchases.

Why anyone would do a test like this using a knife to stab the phone is beyond me. Not really a accurate way of displaying a situation our beloved smartphones would be in. I do not for see my brand new Samsung Galaxy S3 being stabbed by a knife or cut ever!!!
hahahhaha no doubt eh?
I just can't even imagine doing that to my new phone once I get it.
I have the SGS I now (just over 2 years) and have never used a screen protector.
Im pretty careful with my phone.
This makes me a bit more secure with my objections to using a screen cover.

God i wish a mass group of us can write an email to Corning and let them know how distasteful it is to show videos of drops doing NO damage to show how tough Gorilla Glass 4 is. The glass will crack if it lands on any of the corners of the phone and will need to be replaced. Here is a drop video of a naked S6, it's cued to take you straight to the action. Notice that last drop, completely renders the display unusable
Naked S6 drop test
EDIT: Here is the Corning video of their in-house drop test and how they make it seem tough enough to withstand drops without a case:
Corning GG4 lab tests
I am not saying it's supposed to be break proof but I saw this Corning glass video last month and really thought the S6 screens would be much tougher, not completely invincible of course.
Why email Corning??? They didn't make Samsung put it on both front and back of the phone. And yes its still glass so its going to be able to he broke. There is no way that they can make glass break proof on a phone.

Their whole marketing is that it's STRONGER than regular glass, not unbreakable.
I doubt anyone on a forum of this caliber thought that because Corning put their name and "tech" on glass it's going to stop acting like glass.
Glass is glass. Glass is fragile. Glass often breaks on impact.
There's nothing interesting, surprising, or scandalous here.
As far as I know Corning has never made the claim that Gorilla Glass is unbreakable, only that it's super scratch resistant. This thread is dumb.

I think you're giving XDA just a little too much credit with that 1st statement. Just saying But really anyone who thinks the glass on this phone is impervious to cracking needs to lower their expectations. While being much more reinforced it's definetely prone to cracking. Which is why I have a slim clear case on mine. I had an iPhone 4 and having a device with a crack on the rear stinks.

For any droptest to hold real merit they should have used an undamaged S6 for each individual drop. An already cracked screen being dropped on it's face breaks the entire screen? Wow, I did not expect that...

The video, that you, yourself linked to, specifically says:
- "Glass performance depends on device design, drop height and landing surface"
- "Our new formulation survives real-world drops on rough surfaces up to twice as often as competitive glass designs when dropped from one metre"
- (under the demonstrated test mechanism)"Withstands breakage 80% of the time".
Now how, specifically, in that video, do you feel you have been misled by any of the claims made?
Also keep in mind that Corning is not responsible for how any given manufacturer's design uses their glass.

Exactly the same theory to that video.. He puts it in water and soon enough it dies because of the water, then he takes it out and dries it off and soon enough it works again.
