Scratch Test - iPhone vs. SGS III - Galaxy S III General

Thoughts?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnwwz0nyOno&feature=player_embedded

My thoughts are: turn the damn screens off so we can see any scratches easier...
Sent from my MB860 using XDA

It is somewhat hard to see from the video if the screens were scratched however I am sure that what he did left its mark on both phones even though it may be fine scratches...
Why anyone would do a test like this using a knife to stab the phone is beyond me. Not really a accurate way of displaying a situation our beloved smartphones would be in. I do not for see my brand new Samsung Galaxy S3 being stabbed by a knife or cut ever!!!

hahahhaha no doubt eh?
I just can't even imagine doing that to my new phone once I get it.
I have the SGS I now (just over 2 years) and have never used a screen protector.
Im pretty careful with my phone.
This makes me a bit more secure with my objections to using a screen cover.

this guy is funny

sand or small pieces of stone scratch the gorilla glass.

Who the ?*#$ would go and cut his phone with a knife.....? Cmon i have seen better strarch tests^^....as about water resistant test, he just wants to have only one phone, so he is gonna test them untill one dies

stop comparing and start using it

He is funny alright, especially when after doing the water test his iPhone 4S dies.
And then makes this video:

Dont think I will be trying any of these tests!

This one is pretty hilarious actually!

But seriously, it would be nice to know what caused it so we all know just how fragile these things are. I'm real careful with mine, but if you dropped it while taking a dump or something, I'm investing in some fully body armor...
It slipped out of my hands grabbing it off the desk cradle late at night. Hit my roomates fridge, my fridge, and my bed before landing face down on the tile. 5 foot drop. No protection. I use a silicon case to give it some bulk during the day, not at night. Tiny chip... period sized. On the screen.

I'm rocking a silicon case on mine right now, makes it a bit more sticky and bigger. I wasn't ever able to use the tiny buttons before, lol.

Exactly, I use my phone a lot in class to surf the web and supplement the lecture. (I'm a geek get over it) I also leave it on vibe. Not only was the vibe incredibily loud plastic on desk or book, but since the back is so slippery it would easy move around and not stay put.
The silicon case let's it grip the surface its on and drastically quiets the vibe noises. It also gives it some bulk which I quite appreciate when carrying it around

This is why I want an Otterbox. This phone feels so fragile. My Droid was thick and bulky and a tank, but Samsung isn't great with build quality. I love the phone I just need to be careful until I get a case.

It took 4 drops in a drop test. It can take a bit of a beating, but nothing like my Droid could. It's so strange moving to a phone that is so light. If you take off the battery cover the phone is amazingly thin. What really makes it seem weak is that you can tap the screen and feel the vibrator moving.
You can do that on my eris too. At first I thought there was something wrong with it until I felt others do it too, even the incredible "does"

Gorilla glass does not make a phone invincible dude. It is just a lot more damage resistant. Even in *proper* tests they arent showcasing the lack of damage, they are showcasing how little damage it took versus what would have happened to a normal glass screen. I already said above the GG is why im still using my phone now, but what was also stated above is that it took 4 drops to kill it in a drop test, which I can confirm.

Even though I like the concept of though, nearly shatter proof glass (plastic) it's ashame that my eris and blackberry storm, both have scratch proof glass and yet my samsung doesn't. Sure I don't have to worry about breaking my screen, but I never broke either of those screens either, but now I gotta worry about scratches which means back to screen protectors; back to pain in the butt installs!

Samsung PLASTIC design of Nexus S

This thread is for all the people who cry about the plastic on the new Nexus S phone.
First of all, my sister has a Galaxy S phone i9000 to be precise, and it's been a pain to watch her drop the phone again and again... slippery fingers I guess.. lol The phone has a few scratches but that's all.
I don't even wanna know what would happen to my N1 if I did that to it. Every picture I saw of the N1 dropped was either a broken screen or the housing was damaged to a point it had to be replaced. Because of ONE drop!! I'm thankfull I've never dropped it since I have it on launch day.
So please tell me what's a better solution the Samsung plastic that actualy protects your phone or an aluminium case that will get all banged up?
I vote for the plastic. It sucks because it's glossy, if google fixes this and gives us a matt + some gloss accents would really look cool.
All the drops of my Nexus, and no signs yet. Hope that it stays this way.
Useless thread, if you ask me. Zero basis for any actual comparison.

I have both... Give me (enough) money and I will do a drop test.
I dropped mine (from chest height, onto tarmac) on it's top left corner. Just has a small stratch there.
I've dropped my Nexus from chest height onto a stone floor, one 2-3 occasions now. Clearly I'm lucky, but there's no sign of external damage.
My N1 fell when I was hanging my mothers curtain, about 2 meters high....not a scratch. Dropped it more than once and that baby just refuses to die. BEST PHONE EVER.
This could have easily been discussed in the many other threads about plastic Galaxy's.
The only thing that should be dropped is this thread.

I was walking with too many things in my hand and the N1 decided to slip out mid stride and bounce across the pavement...2 small scratches top left corner...
do not feed teh trolls
the point is, the aluminum case has much less "give" then plastic... so our screens wont shatter as easy
The Nexus S is going to be great... We shouldn't get discourage by some shiny plastic... a phone case can easy fix that.

most of us dont use phone cases is the point... it adds bulk to what most of us consider a "perfect sized" phone...
Fail thread , is FAIL
Galaxy S design & materials are awesome, That "plastic" you mean , make this device better than others for weight and elegance
I've dropped my n1 many times...running, getting out of car, drunkenness...still looks brand spanking new
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Yea I've dropped mine several times and I only have 1 tiny scratch on the back battery cover. The rest of the phone looks brand new. I'm using it completely naked after watching the screen torture tests.
I love it. The matte finish really helps protect the phone. We had several Samsung Blackjacks with the same matte finish and when we sold them YEARS later they still looked brand new out of the box.
looks like all the people posted here were lucky in their drop "tests"
but we have people posing on forums:
- that they just sat down with N1 in pocket and it cracked the screen.
- first drop totaly warped the body
- screen cracks from first drops etc.
Again I say I hope I don't drop it once, even though I have the Otterbox commuter series case that feels quite strong.
But I still belive that even though aluminium bodies do have more strenght, they have a higher chance to break something inside the phone due to full shock the phone recieves from the drop, unlike plastic that bends and crumbles on hit and absorbs much of the force from falling.
Aluminium seem it's harder to replace, specialy the unibody designs that HTC does. It's harder to make, harder to service, etc... by that probably the service costs go up to.
Plastic bodies and a snap to take a apart, make and replace.
what do you all think about this? Am I wrong?

Screen scratch test fail

hi chaps,
i recently got myself an evo 4g and was contemplating a screen protector. then i came across some videos on YouTube proclaiming just how tough the gorilla glass (?) on the evo is and withstood all kinds of torture.
anyway, in the spirit of finding out for myself, i tried the same thing to my phone and i definitely suggest not trying it yourself. The screen most definitely does scratch. Now we now.

i already knew it scratched hell iv even broke the screen on my first evo so yea my keys have scratched my screen however you can see it. it doesnt make it look bad or aweful in anyway just notice it under certain angles so kind of dumb to ruin yours to do this test could have just asked if anyone had scratchs on their screen and to take pictures
Ok, so, you went from "I should get a screen protector!" to "I'm gonna take a razor blade to this *****!" in the span of a youtube video?!
Jesus man, I hope to god you don't find out about failblog or else your hospital bills are going to be ridiculous.
ha ha!!
nah man... i was considering a screen protector. Always had one on my HD2 and Touch Diamond. But then i got to reading about how tough the glass was.. and then the YouTube videos. I though to myself, this is brilliant., no screen protector needed.
I initially tried with just the corners and there were no scratches, after which i figured let me catch the main test on video just for sake of it.
now, with what i did to my Evo, the outcome should have be the same as those other chaps who posted on Youtube, but i got a couple of scratches which i took pictures of.... what i proved was that its highly unlikely those Evos came away undamaged or theres something fishy going on.
Btw, im probably not going to use a screen protector. If anything, maybe a slip case. I mean, after all that coin scratching, scicssors scoring and blade cutting, it only came away with two scratches. The second was small enough that i found it hard to take a picture of. The one i could take a picture of is noticeable if viewed from a particular angle. Looking at it head on in normal use is not noticeable.
Plus if it does get that bad, the screens go for $20 bucks on ebay...
but then again, there is the question of resale though.... hhhmmm.
Anyway, i looked on the net and all i got was confused answers, take it from me chaps this is definitive. And ive got the scratch to prove it.

asmd.
Haha. You said chaps....... I remember the glass on my *gasp* blackberry storm being tough. I scratched it with everything and never once noticed anything. Never tried with my evo. Just too sexy of a phone

I use my phone naked since there's no way I'm putting a case on such a huge phone.
It's stood up really well, actually. I've dropped it on concrete a few times and the only noticeable signs are some indents on the plastic around the outer rim.
Though if you look closely, there's little chips missing from my screen. You could definitely scratch it pretty badly without too much effort in my opinion.
My phone has a zagg screen protector on it and I don't have any yellowing issues... however if your fingers are oily or wet (duh most peoples are ) then yeah it can have a tacky sort of feel. I usually just do a quick wipe of my index finger on my jeans before I touch my screen.

Is it misusage or just typical Samsung quality?

Hey guys,
2 weeks ago I bought a brand new galaxy note 2, but by now I already have some scratches on the back cover and some on the steel cornering? So is it just misusage or is it that Samsung have easily scratched covers? And I only dropped the phone like once so I don't think that all of these scratches came from misusage... Any ideas?
I had a sgs2 before and it got totally destructed by scratches and tearings...
Are you carrying diamond tipped nails in your pocket?
I have had my note 1 for 9 months and have dropped it a couple of times on concrete and ceramic tiled floors and it still looks 99% brand new. I don't usually put anything else with it in my pockets but it has come in contact with keys on several occasions.
Do you live in a sandy area? How do you carry it normally on your person?
Now that you mention it, I have a nasty scratch on my back cover too.
Never had a problem with my Note 1. I wonder if it is the glossy coating.
I'm using a case now though - much nicer to hold with a textured back.

Well I think if samsung uses steel or aluminum cases like nokia our phone would feel and look better and will still remain in excellent condition even after couple of drops.. But unfortunately samsung uses glossy plastic which might not break as easily but will definitly not remain a "new phone" definition after a month or two...

Give it a rest officer, if the gn2 has a back thats like the gs3 then yes its flimsy. samsung is notorious for cutting corners likr this to save money.
But with that said its usualy to provide better quality in other aspects.

I like build quality. Example back door now clicks harder and is not easy scratchble like my s3(blue). Home button now easy to press
And display don't have it any more that background black spots. (which is available on any amoled screens)
Very happy.
People complain about plastic being a poor build quality choice. It's just a matter of opinion. I don't feel that it has to be metal/aluminum/whatever to be nice build quality. If anything, I feel plastic is more durable, lighter, and we get awesome internals. People don't complain about the mass amount of plastic BMW uses everywhere in their cars, but people also don't know enough to realize it.

I got the 9H, it's like a second screen. I can take it off in two years and my flawless OE screen will command high $$$

Check out these drop test done from PhoneArena...Post is old.. But new to if you haven't seen this yet.
What baffles me about this new glass as it seems to scratch very easily though in my opinion, already have some little scuff up marks from being in my pocket.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Seems like only yesterday, everyone blindly thought iPhone was the best thing since color screens. Now I think more and more people are realizing that premium materials do not always equal the highest durability. Note 3 FTW!!!!!
No I'm not happy to see you, it's just a Note 3 in my pocket....
I slipped in the snow and my note 3 went flying.Funny but it didn't break I thought for sure I'd have cracked screen, the back for scraps on it and the corner. But wow my heart stopped for a second

You know what..your exactly right.....So strange you say that..I Actually have a small section on my screen where it looks like a scuff mark..I took a magnifying glass and looked more closely and it looks like the coating is gone?? Wth lol...Called at&t and getting a replacement and ordered a tempered glass .3 thick one iff ebay..ordered 2 incase I mess it up..they were 15 a piece putting them my replacement phone soon as it arrives..
I'm glad that the phone is holding up pretty well in tests, but I'm still definitely not taking the risk of not having a case on it. My note 2 dropped from below pocket height onto asphalt for me, not even face first, and spiderwebbed completely, even taking away lots of touch sensitivity. Not risking that again!
Reminds me of the old yellow and black Nextel we used to dent the walls with to show how tough it was, One of the techs actually heaved it through 2 thickness of 5/8" sheet rock. The battery cover popped off and the battery fell out. But as John Cameron Swayze used to say, it kept on ticking.
Dropped mine one foot. Hairline crack. I am now a gorilla glass non-believer.

They could say the freakin screen is made of highly reflective aircraft aluminum. Don't make a difference to me! I'm still putting a case and screen protector on it! I'm using the moshi visor xt. It was what the att store had the morning it came out. It's a nice screen protector but it itself scratches and scuffs. However when the screen is on you can't see any of them. I love my big HD display! Until the time comes that the screens are indestructible I will be protecting mine!

I agree....Like I said above for some reason these screens scuff so easy it's almost like a coating comes off (happened to me) I ended up sending it back for another one and soon as it came I instantly threw on a Tempered Glass off ebay for 16 bucks....and put it on in a steamed room like they say...And sure enough its dust free..and the glass protector feels so smooth and no loss in touch responsiness even with spen, Good idea to grab a Tempered Glass protector...helps alot
I've broken both the Note 2 and Note 3! Guess I'm just unlucky.
