Title says it all,
Are the developers here moving to the new developer phone or no?
Can we please forget some of the setbacks for this device and realize what a gem we have? The amazing CPU doesn't miss a beat and I believe is more reliable then the hyped dual cores. (TOO MUCH HYPE !!) 16gb of ROM is plenty enough.
Pure Google is the way too go.
Ok...
16GB of ROM is nice... but are we able to EXT partition that and do the proper apps2sd instead of the stupid froyo based implementation of it the same as we could an SD card? Or does this not matter as it should be mounted automatically anyway? I'm not sure how all that works with built in memory.

Same here. Does this mean all storage is available for apps ?
This is very interesting.
If the developers go to the Nexus S, that is where I will going. That is.. if it gets as many ROMs the Nexus One has.

I'm guessing that about 2GBS will be avaliable for apps. All I know is that it's enough and I REALLY can't wait much longer for this thing to come
I was wondering about that. Awesome. Still torn whether or not I want to retire my N1 yet....
Regarding apps2ext/sd. Why would that be needed if there is 1-2GB of app storage? The N1 has about 200mb. I still haven't filled that up.

If it's 1-2GB storage then I personally won't need EXT, but as it stands if your app storage goes below a certain amount you start to get irritating alerts and your text messages and such stop going through... and if I don't use EXT I reach that point and it's rather annoying.
I hear ya.
Wouldn't it be nice If the user was allowed to partition the remaining internal storage at first boot?
Lets say the nexus s has 14GB left over after /system, radio, etc. It would be cool to decide how much of that space you wanted allocated to apps.
It may be a stupid or impossible idea. I don't know haha.

Cyanogen?!?!
Any word yet on if he's going to make this *HIS* official device the way he did with the G1 and then the Nexus One? That'll be the biggest factor for me... Or does he only choose devices that end in 1/One?
So this is iphone stile no sd??

Look at the support the Evo is getting and its not HIS device. Cyanogen has plenty of love to go around
.... I hope
...
I know several other phones get support, but nothing like the G1 did or the Nexus One does... That's all I'm saying...
As for the MT4G, I HATE the MyTouch overlay on everything. It's not a genius button, it's a goofball button... I still will miss the trackball of the N1 and the color customization that comes with it.
he he
I was thinking, this great community has discovered and successfully enabled the hidden FM radio function on Nexus One.
Could there be a hidden SD slot on Nexus S?
I don't think the FM Radio wasn't hidden iirc, It was never programmed into the kernel or the phone. I guess we did learn as a community that the N1 had the right hardware just no software support.

That's what custom roms are for. Look like ppl wit be losing more than trackball colors on the nexus s. I was gonna get it also, but after the specs, no thanks
for the memory issue, most likely the NS will follow the GS style of 2GB for apps and about 13GB as the "sd card"
As far as cyanogen goes, i sent him a couple messages on twitter asking his thoughts on the Nexus S and he ignored them. and he hasn't said anything about it on his own so IDK.
They have had MASSIVE issues getting CM to work on any of the samsung devices, but with this one being stock google and being the dev phone, it should be easier to get CM working.
Anyway I don't think Nexus S is enough to be a developer phone.
While most other Android phones have SD and trackball support, Nexus S has neither, how can it still be a developer phone? I thought developer phone should have everything that other phones have.
I think Nexus One is a wonderful developer phone, despite front-camera, there's nothing else that Nexus One is lack of.
Coming from a Nexus my only question about the epic is where's all the RAM?!
The nexus had 512mb too and I had almost 300mb free on boot. This thing is in the 100s and drops to 50ish after a few apps loaded! What's up with that?
Yea I came from a nexus too, and sorda wonder same thing. But I can say dk17 ran snappier than the nexus... but froyo is now slower and laggier than the nexus...

Welcome to bloatware. That is why we all want asop. With all the junk sprint loads on the phone even if you do not use it has a damn service running in the backround. Take a look. Download autokiller if you have root and set it to the 150 range and that will keep your ram in that range speeding up the phone.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
no, it's because not all of the 512mb in the epic is system ram
don't know the exact numbers, but there is also shared vram and stuff like that using the 512mb
I am wondering the same.I am always in the 50s
Every time I am on the browser, and switch over to a text
Or even press home, I tap on the browswer and it has to reload all over again.
Lame that it doesn't stay in memory.
My evo did not suffer from this.

Hmm ya I was wondering that... but even the Nexus had that with the stock rom. I'm not sure if it was kernel optimizations or just the simple fact of the extra process running.
Even if you kill al processes it still doesn't go anywhere near where the nexus with compiled roms.
anyone have any luck porting cyanogen's codebase? I saw a few threads on it but sounded to me like the project was dead
Is there a way to edit the allocation of the 512MB of RAM? There must be a way to give more to the system.
When official froyo is released, I want to start a thread that deals with the Running Services, what they do, and what the ramifications are for each one if its stopped and disabled from running. I have a feeling that a lot of these running services do not need to be running. CM_Service, the voicemail service, is one example.

Pretty sure the allocation is handled at the kernel level so stopping services and crap will never achieve the total ram if it isn't compiled properly.
First and foremost, If this question has been asked and answered before, forgive me. Secondly, anyone opting to flame me for asking this question will get their post deleted.
Now for the question:
Is there a single build out there that uses the full 576mb of RAM that comes in our devices? If so then please point me to that build(don't think this is gonna happen). If not then could a developer please explain why this hasn't been done and what needs to be done to get it working?
I'm not asking this as a noob. I've been using Android exclusively on my device for some time now with limited WM usage, only to change builds and boot back into Android and I'm pretty familiar with it. This doesn't mean I'm a Linux coder/developer, I'm just saying I'm not unfamiliar with the OS.
I welcome all replies as long as they're not argumentative or trolling in nature.
Thanks

edit: I just stumbled across this thread. Skip to page two.
Im assuming the reason we don't see all ram used with these android builds is because the base wm rom they're using. For instance I use cleanex rom which has 350 ram available when booting android.. then the android system loads and I usually have around 300-305 available.
Now I've noticed with other wm roms once I boot into android I may only have 230-250 available... contrary to what people say I think wm does have background programs running once android boots... because there is no way android os takes over 250MB ram to operate...

Dude, no windows kernel or programs are in memory when the android kernel is loaded.
Can a dev please clarify on this whether or not any windows is still left in memory?

about that 250mb free of ram is kinda correct.. i'll give it a shot..

OK AFAIK
When Haret kills windows it registers the total available memory on RAM eg 250-300MB
now HARET uses most of the information on RAM left by WimMo to initialize hardware for android to run properly,
The only solution for a build to use 576MB ram is NAND
I'm no dev or hacker, the above is what i understand from reading open to correction
Best regds
Afaik, Haret does keep a lot of the hardware initialized by winmo, but that has nothing to do with the ram after Linux is loaded. All ram is free and available to Linux, so I'm not sure why all ram isn't used. I thought it was all being used, with some being set aside for the os... maybe some set aside for video memory too??
I'm curious about this too, now. We need to get one of the devs to clear this up. I was under the impression that it was all being used, but it's not all user accessible or shown to the user because the os uses a certain amount. We should point a Dev to this thread.

Any 'Awesome' answers?
Okay Im curious about this too. I just flashed my own lite WinMo rom, to see if it would make a difference, and I wasnt paying attentionso let me ask here if maybe I did something that goes along the lines of the questioning. My WinMo Rom is 80mb, flashed it, and it said Storage free 870mb and only 8mb used, under program it said 100mb used and 370 free, when I booted Android up after loading I went into the system panel lite and under storage it says:
System Storage Capacity: 309.7
Available 15.1(?!?!?!) is that right?
Application Storage: 1011.8
Available 684.2
I am using the Carbon Evo remix by motoman. Looking at the system storage capacity of 309.7 and available 15.1 do those numbers even look right? And from the Figures I stated, does that shed any light about getting to the 512mb mark? ALso when I do a task kill using ATK and TK, ATK says that my memory available is 270mb.
Hope this helps.

Yes.. thats what i thought too..
EDIT: I have tried cleanEx and i still have the same RAM available!
The way I understand it, the full ram on the hd2 has been mapped out. While the unit does have 576mb of memory, it's shared among user memory and other system uses like graphics.
For a short time people were running the full ram kernel with 512mb or 576mb and they noticed right away the display were getting corrupted.
I'm not a dev, this explanation was posted by others. It's in the thread zhegoggles posted too, on page 20.

Sorry but I have an 8gb sd card running my android not a 16gb.
And system panel says 15.1mb not gb, its 309.7mb storage capacity and 15.1mb available, so obviously thats not it, but I am trying to see how much smaller I can make winmo to run android and see if that number changes any more or less.

309.7mb is the size of your system.ext2 partition. 15.1mb is what's left on it. It does not matter as you're not adding anything to it, any apps you install goes into the data.img.

Either way, storage capacity is not ram. Changing winmo roms does not effect your androids ram or storage capacity.

way to burst my bubble there I got my WinMo down to near 40 mb and was hoping, (Not a linux person), I thought I read somewhere that winmo being in memory hampers linux, unless they were blowing smoke.
If thats the case, then how do you find out about memory then? If all the info is file based then how does one know what your using thru android?
I thought the HD2 has 488mb of RAM. If you read on the specs page it says 488MB of RAM.

International HD2 by default has 488MB with 88MB hidden can be unlocked by using custom roms
TMOUS HD2 has 576MB by default
So I bought my HTC Shift 4G but i think it's Defective. I've called HTC, Sprint, and Bestbuy. The 3 companies say the Phone Has 2 GB Internal Memory(ROM). However my Phone only shows 432MB :
203 MB Apps
69. MB System
159.6 MB Free space
Could it be Defective or They just don't know what they saying.
Would u guys tell me if ur devices are showing the same ??
I bought this phone cuz the 2GB. I'd hate to return it and get the big EPIC!!
thanks!!
I got 431 for applications(internal storage)
I figure the rest is system reserved by the fellows at HTC. That is where the OS/kernel is located. Probably locked away/system mountable only, to prevent us from obtaining root. ( any of you fellows who know better can feel free to correct me.) Just based on knowledge of linux etc. Not much in depth on the droid
Sent from my Evo Shift 4G using XDA App
I'm pretty sure it does in fact have 2GB of internal memory, however it seems like a big chunk of that is taken up by the operating system and maybe some is reserved for system storage/app caches/etc. Not 100% sure but I think that's why.

Yeah what he said.
No conspiracy theories, just information...
Check here: http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=2946
It gives you the specs.
This is what I got from Root Explorer:
/app-cache - 4k used, 8.00MB free
/cache - 31.21MB used, 111.01MB free
/data - 351.02MB used, 80.70MB free
/dev - 12K used, 186.59 MB free
/devlog - 4.04MB used, 15.82MB free
/etc - 288.83MB used, 102.53MB free
/system - 288.83MB used, 102.53MB free
I'm not a dev so can't interpret it correctly but it does seem there's lots of memory here and there that could probably be partitioned to the /data folder for more app storage once perm root is achieved.
EDIT: I've removed lots of stock apps so your numbers will not match mine.
The first Shift that I picked up from Best Buy was indeed defective. Not because it wasn't showing the proper amount of memory, but because it locked up on me 5 times in the first hour that I had it. All I could do to get it to turn off is battery pull, and then when I put the battery back in i had a really tough time getting it to turn back on. They swapped it out for me, and my new one has been flawless.
i'm wondering (don't quote me on this) if the extra internal storage is hidden/locked by HTC so there will be room available when the new sense drops? i've heard it's a lot bigger than the current version with the stand-alone navigation/maps that it's going to bring with it.
Has anyone ripped one apart and checked all of the chips on board?
I would take it back to the store and exchange it.
Phone should have around 256mb for apps (With all the stock apps installed)
Anyone else connect their phone to a PC and have the internal storage say 9.51GB and not 16GB? Does the phone use up over 6GB for the OS and stock apps? What gives?

I show 9.62 available on mine. It is kind of odd, but they did add a TON of bloatware. Once we get root and can remove those apps, we should be able to recapture quite a bit back.

Yeah mine shows 9.62 total space and 8.48 available after installing my apps from previous phone, kinda sucks but at least there is an SD slot.
I was curious so I checked my old Sprint GNEX 32GB, it also has a chunk missing, about 7.5GB missing, so it is similar.
It would be nice if they listed the missing space as Reserved or System etc. instead of not showing it.
Yup guys 16GB total internal. The ROM and software has to sit somewhere on there. And AT&T has added so much crap to it I'm not surprised. But thats what the SD card slot is for yeah?
The stock apps seem to use up at least 1GB, plus any data they have.
Unsure about the system, but even the system for CyanogenMod 10.1 seemed to be around 600-800MB with all cache/data included. With TouchWIZ on these phones and all the extra bloat, it wouldn't surprise me if there were at least another gig in there.

Exactly. I heard the ROM file for the S4 was like 1.2 gigs or something like that. That's without cache and whatever else it needs to do.
I remember when I had the S3 the ROM file was like 800 megs for TW. And for AOSP it was like 250.
Even with a debloated rom its gonna be the same as the system partition is already set regardless of whats on it...just so you guys know of course it is posssiboe for a dev to tweak partition amounts...but they typically dont unless necessary
