Hi
I'm looking for an alternative sms app for my galaxy S
the built in one converts to mms after 300 characters.
the kind of features I'm looking for are similar to the galaxy s built in one
- opens fast
- integrates with the phones text alerts
- preview of pictures and video
- group by conversation
I've done another post about the GMail app and email app playing up, is it best to keep sms and email separate. the 2 are kind of different for me. are there apps that do both sms and email (just out of interest)
what are the hot favourite SMS MMS apps?
cheers
handcent sms
handcent sms is great! very configurable (you can turn off MMS conversion e.g.) and looks great - it let's you choose baloon styles (or even replace them with forum style threads), colors, fonts (for each person or all of them), custom notifications, add or remove profile pictures in baloon mode etc.
i love it, but you need to spend 10 minutes configuring it and browsing through options to get the most out of it.
there is paid and free version.
Handcent and ChompSMS are your best bets
although they look fugly compared to the default app (IMO)
what default app are you using? there's no way in... that the default app looks better

i had a look at pictures of both of these and the looked ok , are they really that bad, I'm fond of the built in one apart from the sms to mms convert thing.

chomp sms
handcent
both don't fill the whole page from left to right like the galaxy s app
so less text and more scrolling
i can find a picture of the galaxy s text app
I think you can change the sms auto-convert (at 300chars) off in the messaging app settings (press left capacitive button whilst in the message app) if I remember correctly..
I have all I need with the default app, even the default SMS app for andriod is decent enough.

No dice. This doesn't work. The is no option like this. I wish there was.
I can add a subject or text and it converts to mms.
But hit 300 characters and you stuck in mms mode.
By left capacitive button do you mean the left menu button on the front of the phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-758960.html
I think the froyo update is going to fix it.
will I get the update automatically?
I rooted my phone with one click router to use titanium backup. If I accept a froyo update will it muck everything up?

Yes thats the button. Sorry, I made a mistake, I just checked and there wasn't that setting, I guess I got confused with chomp or handcent which I believe both have that option last time I tried.
There is an option in the menu though called mms "creation mode" - restricted/free/warning. not sure what that does.
The CM (creation mode) parameter is used to facilitate creation of interoperable multimedia messages. Three creation modes are defined:
Restricted - The device will only create and submit multimedia messages belonging to the core multimedia message content domain.
Warning - The device will guide the user to create and submit multimedia messages belonging to the core multimedia message content domain. The user has the option to ignore the guidance.
Free - The device will allow the user to add any content to a multimedia message.

Handcent FUGLY? With all the customisation options (seperate backgrounds&fonts/colours/transparencies for main inbox AND each individual contact!)? Are you kidding? I can't believe everyone on Android DOESN'T use Handcent...

It's ugly. I also don't like the feel of it. I'd take the Samsung app anyday.
Another +1 for HandCent
Love the customisation, although I leave the bubble styles at 'Handcent Classic' theme.
The pop-up quick reply box is awesome and I can also security lock my messages for further privacy and of course switch-off the lame autoconvert to MMS, and whole host of other functions like interval reminders if I didn't hear a message come in, etc.
I switched immediately after I saw the TouchWiz SMS app would cut off long messages and you'd have to click on it to go to another page to read the whole message in size 36 font!! lol Also the bubbles look lame, the font is massive here as well and it spans across the whole screen making it less easy despite the different colours to differentiate between sender and receiver messages in a conversation thread.
Yes I just called Handcent fugly, while it is customizable I think the buttons and the bubbles are pretty rough and unpolished compared to the Samsung one
And I HATE having the New message button as a little icon on the upper left
I would love it if they spiced it up. I do like the custom backgrounds though
Chomp looks a little bit better but still not as polished.
I do keep both though and I like the bigger text in the message window on the default app

Hi thanks for sharing!!!
It looks promising but is it possible to get some screen shots because even on the website i can't see some
Indeed, it'd be nice to see some screenshots.
I won't install it before I can see first what it looks like and if the features look promising.

Interesting but doesn't seem to take advantage of finger scrolling. Promising though!
I´m testing it in a Mio A701 and works fast and fine. Really it seems very promising. I´ve done some actions (phone, sms, email) and i like me. I can access to all functions faster, quickly. Weekend of full test..
Good work!

Looks good, I shall try it out for a few days, see if I get used to it for sms
I looked at the youtube vid.... i'm quite surprised... i can write this sms about 3 times faster with the default phone keyboard and T9!

y the youtube is truly slow, not the o3... , and it is not all about writing sms.
I think this would be awesome with that slide keyboard method, know the one I'm talking about? where you just slide from 4 > 3 > 5 > 6 and it spits out 'hello'.
SMS doen't works on my glofiish X600 with wm6.1
No matter what option I change every time loads the default messaging application

Yes I've seen that a while ago. Can't remember the name of it but it looked nice.
This looks very promissing. Hope to see it more in action before Itry to use it.
Oh, know I remember, it was that Swype keyboard from that T9 developper!
Welcome Addition.
Gave it a try tonight, makes calling and searching easier, still prefer PocketCM for smsing. Good addition to phone, will continue to use and try more of the features.
Thanks for posting.
With the dual language thing - I'd be very interested if it ever reaches the point of supporting Korean characters for input.
Finding a working Korean IME that doesn't **** the hardware keyboard on the dual seems impossible
this looks interesting, and very well thought-out, but maybe a bit overly complicated? the first screenshot seems like a bit much crammed into one screen to me...
great start though! This definitely seems like something I'd use in a later release
how do dial * and # ? i can't seem to find them on the dialpad?
Letters keybord > Long press on "Fast dial / *", it will also toggle the keybord to number.
This is a different concept
for managing your contacts and all contacts-related interaction.
All operations regarding contacts can be accessed via a single control panel: look up contacts, sms them, phone them, save to address book new contacts (as per reived calls), etc.
The app is highly configurable, takes virtually no memory, can be assigned to a soft key (that is what I've done) or set as a Start menu item.
The developer is possibly the most responsive I've met. Any issues are promptly resolved and incorporated into the next version.
This app has quickly evolved, from a highly functional initial version, to a VERY higly functional current version.
I like it!
I downloaded and installed o3touch on my E-TEN M700.
While running, the speaker makes some silent cracking sound after each second or two.
Having the large keys for input is nice, but need to wait for the third letter to be used is terrible and slows down writing. Using my hardware querty is much faster. You should implement T9-Feature instead!
The layout seems quite easy and efficient but the look ist not very nice. Seems as the app was written 10 years ago.
I would like to have avatars on contact list.
So I've uninstalled Handcent, uninstalled ChompSMS, just using the default messaging application. I receive a new sms message, I get double notifications, one smiley face one and a normal sms looking envelope one. I check my messages, review my newly received sms but the envelope icon stays in my tray, sometimes it even says you have 0 new message(s). Anyone have a clue what's going on here? Screenshots!

very easy.
from the icon i see that you use Handcent SMS
at the same time however, you didn't disable the notification of the in-build Messenger app - so the phone gives you double notification 1. from Handcent, 2. from the in-build app
if the inbuild messenger app gives you a notification, but Handcent SMS doesn't it means that in Handcent you have probably blacklisted a sender, so Handcent doesn't give you a notification, but the in-build app doesn't have a black list, so it still gives you a notification (= disable the in-build app's notification and no problems thereafter).
p.s. for some reason Handcent's recent release regularly moves people "automagically" into the blacklist (it doesn't seem to like my wife very much.....), therefore I currently have the option "Show Blacklist" enabled... a bit annoying
I don't have handcent installed anymore, it's uninstalled. Thanks for your fast reply. I'm having this problem while only using the default messaging app. No case of double notifications here, when I tap the envelope notifications it doesn't really clear, unless I manually clear all notifications.
Hmm, Have you tried to reinstall handcent and then turn off notifications within handcent, then uninstall? Looks like the options are carrying over.
Do you have beautiful widgets pack 2? the sms in that will automatically notify you even if you never set it up. Made me incredibly mad trying to figure out where the second notification was coming from. finally hooked it up and logcatted it while I sent myself a message. Figured out what it was from that.

How do you make those icons in the bottom show up, where it shows you what windows you have open?
The basics first, Dialer one is an excellent dialer, T9 contact search, speeddial, and many other benefits over the incredibly lackluster stock dialer. Handcent is my choice for texting, Barcode scanner will let you scan qr's and head directly to them on the market. BTW online is the best way to browse the market, android zoom http://www.androidzoom.com/ or appbrain http://www.appbrain.com/ are a couple popular choices. You can then put your spanking new barcode scanner to work as you farm the market.

Yeah that reminds me that I need to pick up Handcent on day 1 of my n1. I hear that its god's gift to android. Does it still do the voice-to-text thing?
I like handcent, but its such a bloated program. It doesn't seem to be slow though. I have been using the stock app lately just to see if I miss any features from handcent, and wit my usage, no I haven't, only a few minor adjustments to functionality. The stock app tends to handle sending messages when you have no signal then move into an area with signal. Sometimes in buildings I have poor signal and while holding the phone my signal dies. When this happens using handcent, the message will always be in limbo even after acquiring signal, and I must manually try to send it again. The stock app does not seem to have this issue.

That's HelixLauncher (not sure if it works on non rooted phones). Not sure which icons you mean as it doesn't show windows that you have open, so here's the rundown: It has an option to allow you to double tap on screen to preview your other homescreens, then tap on any of the preview tiles to move to that screen (those are the white tiles you see above the app icons). It also allows you to put 4 applications (not widgets) next to the app menu app menu icon, these 4 applications will appear in any of the homescreens you go to, just like the app menu icon.
Helixlauncher2 is great as well, it looks like the native N1 launcher but with the same enhancements as the regular helixlauncher.

Yep, also text to voice. Bloat is often ascribed to handcent but to my mind that conjures up slow performance or features tripping over themselves. I never have slow performance and the extra features stay out of the way unless you use them. Even the ads only show up in the menu and so taking no screen real estate while using the application. I call it a winner, any application that hopes to supplant it is going to have to be totally on its game.

Thanks for introducing me to Dialer One! Awesome app. Stock phone app sucks.
I was floored that anyone would release a phone with a dialer at the level of craptacularness that is the stock dialer. No speed dial? I mean c'mon.

You can have the dialer up and swipe horizontally between the call log, favorites and contacts. I do not use favorites as the old school speed dial (press and briefly hold any number from 1 to 99) is faster. The predictive search works very quickly to get to any contact and is faster than using contacts itself. I dont even have a contacts icon on the home screen anymore.
PLEASE READ THIS FULL POST BEFORE INSTALLING!
Beta Version updated 2/16. Build 7
This is our 7th beta build of Handcent 4.0 and we're releasing it to the public. Because of the nature of BETA we expect you to be able to install an application manually without using the market.
Remember, Handcent is a free application, so we don't have a fancy, outsourced, technical support team to assist you with Android OS tech support such as installing applications outside of the APP market. If someone wants to link me a tutorial for this, I'll post it in this first post.
This will replace and upgrade your current version of Handcent 3.9.x. It does not install a second copy. You can easily revert back to an older version if you experience catastrophic issues by redownloading from the Android marketplace.
HELP US FIND BUGS! If you think you found something, but you aren't sure, see if myself or someone else can replicate it in this forum before submitting a bug report.
Thanks for your patience! Don't forget the THANKS button here, and show your support by removing ads in Handcent by purchasing a subscription or contribution membership.
New to XDA? The install file is attached to this post.
New Features
Handcent Talk - Allows you to bind your phone number and send text messages for free using the Handcent network.
Greater customization (particularly with widgets and the pop-up window but not everything is implemented yet)
Improved compatibility with iOS messaging from iPhones (iOS compatible group messaging planned)
Full ICS Support
Features under Development
iPhone iMessaging compatible GROUP MESSAGE support
Skinnable POPUP notification
Greater detailed ICS Notification features
SMS/MMS/Settings Backup to SD CARD feature (Which won't require subscription like the online backup service!)
Confirmed Issues
Some modded users may experience theme compatibility issues when using themes of white text on dark backgrounds.
Thanks for this! Can this be installed over the current stable version with no issue?
Edit: could you also please provide some sort of changelog so us beta testers can test/verify all the new things?
Yes. It will replace the current version. And this version is quite stable. We don't expect many issues to come up.
Only issue I can see so far is that it doesn't like dark menus as the text is black and doesn't pull thebcilor.from the android system

Hmm, is there a way to change the new top action bar? Or do we have to wait for the skins to be updated? Right now it is a light blue that doesn't fit with the Darkness theme I'm using... Or am I being mindgamed and it was always this blue?
Also, I have a suggestion for one option regarding some wasted screen space. Going to "Settings > Custom style > Bubble settings > Enable text counter" lets us enable or disable the text counter. This text counter shows under the text editor.
When the text counter is disabled, the text counter is gone, but the vertical space is still taken up by the blank space. See screenshot below for what I mean.

It would be nice if disabling the text counter would collapse the previously reserved space.
I can suggest collapsing the text counter field when it's not being used, but yeah, we are aware that there may be SOME skinning issues and we will be addressing those as best as we can prior to the public release.

I see. I'll be bringing this up with development as we are aware that many Handcent users are also advanced users who root their devices and install third-party ROMs. I'm one of them, myself. However, with Cyanogen largely unavailable to DX2 users, this isn't something I get the luxury of testing.

I will be more then willing to help in this. I am pretty sure I can make a few simple changes so the color codes call the ones from the stock android framework. It would go along way to reduce the fragmentation issues we all see with how apps look if they used the built in color codes instead of defining their own. If I can be of any help please feel free to let me know.

First app load scrolling performance is absolutely horrific. It's choppier than any other app I've seen on my SGS II.
Edit: contact selection screen's scrolling is even worse. It's like watching a horrible car crash in slow-mo over a 28.8k modem.

I thought we were finally going to get group mms compatibility with iOS? I can't find any option to enable this and it's not working natively.
If this was not added, what does "Improved compatibility with iOS messaging from iPhones" actually mean?
It's frustrating being left out of the loop because my friends on iphones like using iOS group messaging to communicate.

Good to know it's coming. If you guys are first to the market with this feature, you will make a lot of android users with iPhone using buddies very happy.
Is there/will there be an option to turn off the new 3 home screens? I appreciate you want to highlight the Handcent services and talk, but is a little annoying to accidentally change the screen when scrolling the conversation list.
The rest all looks good, much prefer the new 'unknown' contact avatar to the previous.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I find fonts are too big all over the Note, in particular on the Samsung email app and S-planner. They haven't really been optimised to make use of the Note's HD screen.
For instance the S-planner, in many calendar entries, only allows 7-8 characters per diary entry showing on screen at once, so words are cut off most of the time.
Even if you change the font settings to "tiny" in app settings, it makes little if any difference and a lot of headings fonts don't change at all.
On a more positive note, Internet surfing is ok, this does make full use of the HD screen and shrinks webpages to optimise to fit more stuff on the screen at once
Gmail's own app is sort of ok, if you alter to tiny font.
The Samsung email app and S-planner are very poor however, and haven't been optimised for a HD screen.
As for the email widget that manages to only display 4 emails but still use up half a HD screen....
It seems a very strange design decision to me.

Even if you change the font settings to "tiny" in app settings, it makes little if any difference and a lot of headings fonts don't change at all.
Internet surfing is ok however, this does make full use of the HD screen and shrinks webpages to optimise to fit more stuff on the screen at once

Any way I got good font for you. (pm me)
I'm using tablet mod and very happy with font size. Google and samsung email clients suck ass. Hundreds of other good email clients you can find at market. I like AquaMail, it has a very nice tablet interface.
Android allows you to always make a choice and completely reconfigure almost everything.

Agree Android lets you play around with settings, if you have a bit of knowledge and time
I take it you've rooted to do tablet mod?
I'm using out of the box configuration.
I don't particularly want to root because I suspect I'll loose something - like S-Memo?
Are there any Calendar apps that make full use of the Note's HD screen?

You don't loose anything, even warranty (like some morons says). My configuration you can read at my signature.
You know that you can always make the font smaller for emails etc etc in the display settings..did you try that?
Edit: my bad...after reading the second time, i think you did try to make it smaller

Install Fontomizer and pick a small font from its database.
Change the font on GB to ICS's roboto font via Root explorer. Maybe this will help when you're setting it to tiny?
I know that my stock GB looks a whole world better when using the roboto font.
