How do you make those icons in the bottom show up, where it shows you what windows you have open?
The basics first, Dialer one is an excellent dialer, T9 contact search, speeddial, and many other benefits over the incredibly lackluster stock dialer. Handcent is my choice for texting, Barcode scanner will let you scan qr's and head directly to them on the market. BTW online is the best way to browse the market, android zoom http://www.androidzoom.com/ or appbrain http://www.appbrain.com/ are a couple popular choices. You can then put your spanking new barcode scanner to work as you farm the market.

Yeah that reminds me that I need to pick up Handcent on day 1 of my n1. I hear that its god's gift to android. Does it still do the voice-to-text thing?
I like handcent, but its such a bloated program. It doesn't seem to be slow though. I have been using the stock app lately just to see if I miss any features from handcent, and wit my usage, no I haven't, only a few minor adjustments to functionality. The stock app tends to handle sending messages when you have no signal then move into an area with signal. Sometimes in buildings I have poor signal and while holding the phone my signal dies. When this happens using handcent, the message will always be in limbo even after acquiring signal, and I must manually try to send it again. The stock app does not seem to have this issue.

That's HelixLauncher (not sure if it works on non rooted phones). Not sure which icons you mean as it doesn't show windows that you have open, so here's the rundown: It has an option to allow you to double tap on screen to preview your other homescreens, then tap on any of the preview tiles to move to that screen (those are the white tiles you see above the app icons). It also allows you to put 4 applications (not widgets) next to the app menu app menu icon, these 4 applications will appear in any of the homescreens you go to, just like the app menu icon.
Helixlauncher2 is great as well, it looks like the native N1 launcher but with the same enhancements as the regular helixlauncher.

Yep, also text to voice. Bloat is often ascribed to handcent but to my mind that conjures up slow performance or features tripping over themselves. I never have slow performance and the extra features stay out of the way unless you use them. Even the ads only show up in the menu and so taking no screen real estate while using the application. I call it a winner, any application that hopes to supplant it is going to have to be totally on its game.

Thanks for introducing me to Dialer One! Awesome app. Stock phone app sucks.
I was floored that anyone would release a phone with a dialer at the level of craptacularness that is the stock dialer. No speed dial? I mean c'mon.

You can have the dialer up and swipe horizontally between the call log, favorites and contacts. I do not use favorites as the old school speed dial (press and briefly hold any number from 1 to 99) is faster. The predictive search works very quickly to get to any contact and is faster than using contacts itself. I dont even have a contacts icon on the home screen anymore.

Hey guys, I'm loving the Xda Trion (Hermes), but I'm finding it's use as a phone / SMS device a bit sub-par. It's so annoying to have to use the stylus to send a quick text message, for example, and having to use the built in keyboard and trying to text while walking is a non-starter.
Basically, I'm just wondering what third-party software other people are using to make the Trion more of a one-handed phone (in the style of a Sony Ericsson K800, for example). I'm in particular need of a half decent SMS app, that lets me use the touchscreen with my thumb. It doesn't matter if it's free or commercial software; I'm interested in anything that can make the phone functionality of this pda better.
Also, is there any third party software that can improve the camera? Or anything that can manage associations (i.e. the applications which open whenever a file has a certain extension e.g. ".avi").
Cheers!!
Many different questions warrant many different posts, best not to lump them all together.
For managing associations, I use GSFinder.
What do you want to do to improve the camera?
Have you tried SPB Mobile Shell (re one hadned use)?
V
Hiya!
I would rather lump them in altogether so that I can get lots of different answers and opinions to look over in the same thread!
Regarding the camera, seeing as it's essentially a software program which takes the pictures, I just wondered if there is third-party software out there that provides a better interface to the camera, or removes the blurriness from photographs.
Haven't tried the Mobile Shell. Does this improve texting with one hand?
Edit: The camera and file associations thing is secondary really. It's the calling and texting with one hand that I'm really interested about.

Mobile Shell doesn't help with texting, but makes all the other functions more or less on your phone much easier to operate by thumb! Free trial available.
For texting, try Tengo Thumb, which means you can just use your thumb(s) to input text, no stylus needed. Free trial available.
I think the moderators generally advise keeping posts to one topic (although the moderators are the worst examples for not doing this), and then making sure that your post title matches your post, eg
"Miscellanous musing and ruminations on the use of single digit physical input, improving the camera software and how to assign file associations".
And squeeze that into the topic title length limitation!
Check out the various text input (SIP) replacements that will let you define your own large input keys. Some are free.
I wrote a skin for ThumbKeys once, which I found to be particularly effective.

Hey vijay, nice to see u're back
What "thumbkeys" are you refering to?
Sorry. my bad Glancing at my own old posts show that I have some kind of Freudian oversight embedded in my mind - it's not thumbkeys, despite me always referring to it as such, it's Touch Keyboard - http://www.orthancsoftware.com/TKeyboard.htm
I haven't used it for many years, since moving to the Hermes I use the SIP less and less. But for relatively large amounts of input on a non keyboard device, Touch Keyboard was the easiest for me to skin to my satisifaction, after trying many types of skinnable keyboards.
There are other more "conventional" SIPs for use with big thumbs.
If you're a real psycho you can check this one out:

PS: yeah, I don't know if I'm "back" yet, I've been super busy at work (I'm a lawyer and we just got absolutely blown out of the water on this big case that took 6 months of last year up).
But hopefully I'm logging in again, and it's nice to see that not too much has changed! Some new faces, lots of new roms! I found it rather amusing to see some of my stuff in http://wmblack.info/

What I do is that I have installed the "Smart Dialer 2.0" which can be found at www.pocketpc.myluckypda.com.
Using this application you search for your contact using T9 (Very good for one handed operation due to large buttons). Once the contact is found this application has the option to take you directly to messaging application with the touch of a button. From here on I use the "SPB On Screen Keyboard" to type the message and send it. Alternately I can also use the slide out keyboard on my Jasjam but I am a bit reluctant to do so for the fear of its getting loose over time.
And if you want real one handed operation I suggest you use Smart Dialer to search for the contact and take you to the messaging application, followed by the Intellipad as has been posted above.
Regards
Hey guys, many thanks for the excellent suggestions so far! I'm gonna research these when I get back from work today.
Cheers!
Just wanted to say I'm using the Intellimate Phone Pad and it's awesome!
One thing I noticed though, it's actually an HTC cab, dated 2004. It does the job, but I'm just wondering if there is a newer version out there. I like to have the very latest version of all my apps!
Vijay,
Which of your apps (or is it someone else's?) makes your top bar have all of those icons with the counters for how many SMS's, missed calls, etc.
That seems like an excellent usage of the real estate!
You mean in this screenshot? Or something else?
V
yes, that screenshot.
the counters for email, sms, voicemails, etc. across the very top.
1) The browser doesn't have a way to force desktop versions of sites. Even with about:debug some sites will not allow it to view the desktop versions. This renders flash useless for me because the reason I wanted flash so bad was because I wanted to watch the Daily Show on my phone. And that website doesn't fall for about:debug while hulu does.
2) can't stand the one blink per 15 seconds notification light rate. (i know this will be remedied soon by some app)
3) can't install HTC_ime keyboard (im sure this will be fixed soon)
4) no pinch to zoom on mobile websites.
5) protected apps like documents to go are not working right. I paid good money for that app and I need it to work. I don't need just a document viewer but an editor. I'm sure that will be fixed soon but its not fun having an app that you paid 15 bucks for not working.
6) the very nice text selection method in the desire port.
7) Sense UI and all the great HTC widgets of course but I can't really fault Froyo for that.
I'll wait for Paul's next desire port with Froyo's additions. Until then I'll stick with r22 of the desire port.
try rotating the phone and then refreshing the page to make it load as desktop view..it worked for me
HTC Sense Keyboard is already working (except the voice to text bit).
Well I just moved from r22 to froyo and I think i will stick to froyo. I really miss the nice large contact photo's, favorites widget and a few other sense stuff, but FLASH 10.1 is a dealbreaker for me. My own website finally looks great on the phone, made it using Flash ofcourse.
my car charger stopped working when i updated to froyo.
i did a nandroid restore to my CM 5.0.6 and it worked just fine.
i dont understand...haha.
Um... I had NO problem watching Daily Show on CC's website. I'm stock.
You just go to the bottom of the "mobile" page and click on "desktop" page, then scroll down the left side and click on full episode under Daily Show.

That's one way to do it... but it's totally not necessary on CC's site... at least not to watch Daily Show or the Colbert Report. I tested both earlier and no problem. You just need to select the full desktop site from the bottom of the mobile page because the links to those shows doesn't show up on the mobile version.

Yup. The only site I know of requiring that is Hulu.
I'm happy to be corrected and note the corrections, no need to say "owning" and all that..
Anyways, when I did the UAS string fix and went to comedy central, and yes I went to the bottom of the screen to click dektop site or whatever, it worked but it still told me I needed to download flash player even though I already had it and it worked on other sites like dailymotion, and hulu. Maybe I need to try the rotate the screen idea, and I'll be glad if that works. That's good news if it does.
Pinch to zoom on mobile sites like m.facebook.com was helpful, it didn't zoom the whole thing, just made the font bigger, while keeping the same column format. It was useful to me. If it works in this then that's great.
And if the HTC_IME keyboard is having problems with voice to text input, then it's not fully working. I use that feature and find it very handy.
I still feel the text selection method is important as I am often copying and pasting stuff between emails and browser and chats. Its very nicely implemented in the desire port.
And yes I did reinstall docs 2 go multiple times. I know it will be fixed soon if not already, it was just a pain in the ass to first not see any of the apps I have downloaded in my "Downloads" on the market, and then to not have my most expensive app not work right.
And I love the native widgets of the sense UI.
I'm glad to hear that the flash is working and the keyboard are working, this is good news. I still feel that until there is a desire port with froyo capability, I'll wait.
If you need to either documents. You should get a winmo phone. Its why all of mine were winmo before.
But I rarely edited docs.
I went back to 2.1 (Cy's latest 5.0.8) because of:
- speed is really not all that different - at least not in the apps i'm running and the way the unit operates.
- battery life is a bit better
- trackball wake up - c'mon froyo....
- latest 720p video
- picture resize - they are locked in 1.2 mb in froyo...and I can get them as small as 130kb in 2.1
- always liked Cy's roms, anyway. WAiting for his froyo, I'm sure all tweaks will have been worked out - soon
I just switched from sense to Launcher Pro Beta, and I must say that it is amazing... It's just so much more predictable and useful, not to mention faster and smoother. On top of that, from what I have heard, it is great for battery life, just switched so I haven't had a chance to test that out yet.
If you haven't given it a shot yet, download it from the market and try it out, I promise you will not regret it. Its MUCH better than sense. I never had a problem with sense, but I just figured Id try something new, and it paid off...
P.S Does anybody know if the new software patch that came out today will be included in any of the developers roms? I'm not to sure how that stuff works.
ADW.Launcher is also a worthy alternative, imo. Very customizable.

You can't use HTC widgets outside of the Sense launcher. However, there are replacement widgets in the Market for almost everything you are missing. For example, Pure Grid Calendar Widget and Weather & Toggle Widgets.

I played around with it after that post, but just couldnt get it how I wanted it AGAIN. So Im back to sense haha. I really need 6 icons on the dock at the bottom to avoid extra icons on my home screen. I also wanted a 4G toggle to match the rest, and that doesnt seem to be out. You know with LauncherPro you can change it to 5 rows of icons (20 total) on the screen at once, right? You can potentially have 28 more slots than with Sense.

Im talking about JUST the dock at the bottom. Not shortcuts added to the screen itself. Right now I have the rosie bar at the bottom that launches my app drawer/phone/etc. Then I have 4 icons above it. Handcent, Gmail, Internet and People. With LauncherPro I can have all 4 of those on the dock, but then the 5th spot is taken by either the app drawer or phone. I want both. I know you can do the scroll thing, but its not the same. I just like a simple look and wanted everything I have now on my HOME screen.
Here is the setup now. I want all of the same access on the home screen, and it cant be done with LauncerPro. 5 short cuts on the dock and then a random widget on the screen just wouldnt look as clean.

ADW.Launcher works pretty good.
A few things I like:
- You can make as many columns and rows of Icons as you want per screen (up to 8 x 8, so that would be 64 icons per screen).
- Swipe down anywhere on a screen to make the top bar come down
Hey,
I've had my Unlocked European HTC Hero since the first week it was released. Even though there was quite a delay in the release of 2.1 (non rooted), I'm pretty happy. Some interesting things:
1) I received the OTA notification at a time when I did not want to update so I chose to "update later." In order to force the update later, I set the clock forward as people suggested. That worked just fine and the phone updated no problem. However, the time was set back to 1980. It was at that point I noticed the Market wasn't working. Once I set the clock back to real time, it did work. Just a note in case you did that.
2) I was actually surprised that almost everything was retained during the upgrade. I have previously flashed with some of the 1.5 Roms (official only) and it always wiped out everything. Even all my apps remained installed, though quite a few needed updates
3) FINALLY the compass works in Google Maps. When the Hero first came out everyone complained that the iPhone compass worked (with Gmaps) but not on Android. I must have missed the announcement that it was now working on Android and what an awesome surprise.
4) FINALLY we have Google search by voice. I love it. However, I understand that you are supposed to be able to use voice as input for any text box (composing email, sms, etc). How do you do that? There is no microphone button available. Do I need an app?
5) Google navigation works like a charm although it seems a bit laggy. Sometimes I have already turned before the map moves. Still - very slick. One question: Where is Car Home?
6) I though there was supposed to be a nifty new 3D Gallery like Cool Iris. Where is that?
7) Voice Search is al little strange to me. The window with results is not really a browser. When you click on a result, it opens in a new window, which is nice. But , how do you get back to the search results? It is not one of the open windows?
All in all, pretty cool stuff.
5)car home is an AOSP thing, so it is not available on sense roms. instead you get an app called "navigator" which is similar.
6) Gallery 3d is also AOSP, and not in htc sense roms. It is however in pretty much all custom sense roms, such as villain 12.
I used the goldcard image to downgrade my tmobile and now have upgraded to official 2.1 rom. I have to say i'm quite underwhelmed with the upgrade. Google navigation is nice but does lag a little. I have to admit my hero does not appear much snappier than when it was running 1.5. On the plus side I don't have to see the annoying tmobile logo when the phone boots up.
CyberWalrus,
I'm not sure I understand AOSP? You mean it is a choice to not include those features?
You mentioned an app called "Navigator." I don't see that anywhere.

I'm not sure I understand AOSP? You mean it is a choice to not include those features?
You mentioned an app called "Navigator." I don't see that anywhere.

stock, unmodified, pure android. The one that the nexus one, the G1, and the magic run. Gallery and Car home are features of AOSP android
HTC roms have HTC sense android. they dont have gallery 3d because htc presumably thinks its own "photos" app is better.
I am running villain 12, rather than the stock htc rom, so I have gallery 3d ported over anyway.
But the navigator app may be from the desire, and therefore only available on custom roms.
Seriously none of you are freaked out by the new bootscreen...

It scares me!
Can anyone help me with issue 4? How do I use voice input for any text box?
AFAIK you can choose it as a keyboard type.
settings -> locale&text -> Touch Input -> keyboard types
But I think there is a button on the keyboard, which is to change settings. You could use that to change keyboard type.
But none of the keyboard types are "voice" or anything like that.

I seem to remember that was one of the things that HTC were leaving out of their roms. Not sure if anyone on 2.1 on any htc handsets has it.
There may be an apk kicking around for it , but again, this is from a distant memory since it wasn't relevant for me as 2.anything was a distant dream for me at the time.

What boot screen is that? Where can I download the full version? Also, the bear seems to be a small mod right? Where can I get the original version?
You people looking for voice input in every textbox, you can install the HTC_IME Mod for that, it has the voice input button.
I'm also looking for the Navigation app, can't find it anywhere... Suggestions?
Sorry about the double post...
Nazgulled you know what that bear stands for, right?
I suggest you not to put that onto your phone...
Not really, what does it mean?
But what about the original, without the bear?
He is called a Pedobear.
But DO NOT google it at work.

Where can I find the original boot animation without the bear?
there's no keyboard calibration on my Asian Hero. email HTC support to check why and I was informed that this was really meant and no reason was given why it was removed. now i'm wondering how I can recalibrate my keyboard
Ever since my switch over to Android a few years back from my iPhone 3G, I've always been waiting for such a feature in Android that will give me the ability to tap the notification bar and instantly scroll back to the top in any app that requires scrolling. I've never once asked for this feature once until now. I've Googled it and it seems to be a rare topic. Do Android users know if this such feature? Because it seems like an easy concept and assuming wouldn't be difficult to incorporate a mod into Android... or would it?

Used to like that feature on the iphone a year back. But don't you think that it is also possible to just flung one time and the whole page goes up? In iOS the flings are not continuous. To me at least. I would love to have this though.

I agree, that's one feature that android is sorely lacking.

Yes, that is what I have to do now. But when I'm reading a long article, flinging up on the page 20 times gets old.
I think Apple would sue Google if that feature was intriduced to Android
I think the new Samsung Galaxy S 3 has an gesture with scrolls in any list to the top. You just tap the top of the phone twice.
It's weird that just few people care of this feature, which is very cool, I miss it so much

Yea, I would love for this feature to be implemented.

nope. i'd never use this if it were rolled into android. it seems very un-natural to tap the notification bar to go to the top. let iOS have this one....we don't want it anyway.
Well, some of us do. Seems like it would be something fairly easy to do with some dev knowledge.

So you would rather swipe over and over to reach the top of a loooonnng list rather than tapping the status bar once? Oooooooook.

you better try to experience this feature, then decide it's natural or un-natural.
in general, 1 side: users have to swipe many many times to come to the top of the page; another side: just a tap then done(just like the home key on PC) - smooth and easy. Think and compare
you can use dolphin browser and gesture control, it works well

I think it would be cool if it could be implemented to a long press menu button, when I tap the top it tries to change brightness..
