I find fonts are too big all over the Note, in particular on the Samsung email app and S-planner. They haven't really been optimised to make use of the Note's HD screen.
For instance the S-planner, in many calendar entries, only allows 7-8 characters per diary entry showing on screen at once, so words are cut off most of the time.
Even if you change the font settings to "tiny" in app settings, it makes little if any difference and a lot of headings fonts don't change at all.
On a more positive note, Internet surfing is ok, this does make full use of the HD screen and shrinks webpages to optimise to fit more stuff on the screen at once
Gmail's own app is sort of ok, if you alter to tiny font.
The Samsung email app and S-planner are very poor however, and haven't been optimised for a HD screen.
As for the email widget that manages to only display 4 emails but still use up half a HD screen....
It seems a very strange design decision to me.

Any way I got good font for you. (pm me)
I'm using tablet mod and very happy with font size. Google and samsung email clients suck ass. Hundreds of other good email clients you can find at market. I like AquaMail, it has a very nice tablet interface.
Android allows you to always make a choice and completely reconfigure almost everything.

Agree Android lets you play around with settings, if you have a bit of knowledge and time
I take it you've rooted to do tablet mod?
I'm using out of the box configuration.
I don't particularly want to root because I suspect I'll loose something - like S-Memo?
Are there any Calendar apps that make full use of the Note's HD screen?

You don't loose anything, even warranty (like some morons says). My configuration you can read at my signature.
You know that you can always make the font smaller for emails etc etc in the display settings..did you try that?
Edit: my bad...after reading the second time, i think you did try to make it smaller

Install Fontomizer and pick a small font from its database.
Change the font on GB to ICS's roboto font via Root explorer. Maybe this will help when you're setting it to tiny?
I know that my stock GB looks a whole world better when using the roboto font.

I'm not thinking something like my snapshots I photoshopped up would be possible, but it would be nice to have an easy-hide button for Titanium rather than going into the Today screen settings.
I guess the mockups are something I might have if I was a Microsoft 6.5 Engineer. Basically I just copied the Hide/Show Desktop Button from Windows 7, added some Arrows from the Lock Screen, and added the Lock Screen clock at the bottom.

I'd like that!!
If this were the default lockscreen it would be much more original that than the iPhone S2U that Microsoft is trying to copy.
Think, if your alerts could shoot out of the arrow part and you could slide them up or down to retrieve them. To unlock the phone, just drag the arrows to the right. All with smooth animations of course. The arrow part could simply change color to let you know you have new alerts. When you tap it, the number of alerts slides out along with the individual alert slider.

I never thought of making it a lock screen. I guess if someone were to create a whole new lock screen app like that, it would be possible to make one that was like my designs... But I am still interested in the idea of easily hiding Titanium.
Good idea.
It looks like S2U2.
i would love to get this on my phone if any one can develop it haha...great idea....... love it.... lets hope some one can make it...
support this great idea
Looks like something that might be available on "7". But would be awesome if we could get it here and now. +1 for notifications linked to the appropriate panel, ie. you get an email: the email hidden tab would blink/change color/show email icon and you could slide that tab out to check it.. brilliant concept.

the closest thing to this now would be s2u2 actually. just a matter of skinning it to look like titanium. and you can slide and titanium would show!!! i know not what you had in mind but hey it's the closest you can get =D

Hi
I'm looking for an alternative sms app for my galaxy S
the built in one converts to mms after 300 characters.
the kind of features I'm looking for are similar to the galaxy s built in one
- opens fast
- integrates with the phones text alerts
- preview of pictures and video
- group by conversation
I've done another post about the GMail app and email app playing up, is it best to keep sms and email separate. the 2 are kind of different for me. are there apps that do both sms and email (just out of interest)
what are the hot favourite SMS MMS apps?
cheers
handcent sms
handcent sms is great! very configurable (you can turn off MMS conversion e.g.) and looks great - it let's you choose baloon styles (or even replace them with forum style threads), colors, fonts (for each person or all of them), custom notifications, add or remove profile pictures in baloon mode etc.
i love it, but you need to spend 10 minutes configuring it and browsing through options to get the most out of it.
there is paid and free version.
Handcent and ChompSMS are your best bets
although they look fugly compared to the default app (IMO)
what default app are you using? there's no way in... that the default app looks better

chomp sms
handcent
both don't fill the whole page from left to right like the galaxy s app
so less text and more scrolling
i can find a picture of the galaxy s text app
I think you can change the sms auto-convert (at 300chars) off in the messaging app settings (press left capacitive button whilst in the message app) if I remember correctly..
I have all I need with the default app, even the default SMS app for andriod is decent enough.

No dice. This doesn't work. The is no option like this. I wish there was.
I can add a subject or text and it converts to mms.
But hit 300 characters and you stuck in mms mode.
By left capacitive button do you mean the left menu button on the front of the phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-758960.html
I think the froyo update is going to fix it.
will I get the update automatically?
I rooted my phone with one click router to use titanium backup. If I accept a froyo update will it muck everything up?

Yes thats the button. Sorry, I made a mistake, I just checked and there wasn't that setting, I guess I got confused with chomp or handcent which I believe both have that option last time I tried.
There is an option in the menu though called mms "creation mode" - restricted/free/warning. not sure what that does.
The CM (creation mode) parameter is used to facilitate creation of interoperable multimedia messages. Three creation modes are defined:
Restricted - The device will only create and submit multimedia messages belonging to the core multimedia message content domain.
Warning - The device will guide the user to create and submit multimedia messages belonging to the core multimedia message content domain. The user has the option to ignore the guidance.
Free - The device will allow the user to add any content to a multimedia message.

It's ugly. I also don't like the feel of it. I'd take the Samsung app anyday.
Another +1 for HandCent
Love the customisation, although I leave the bubble styles at 'Handcent Classic' theme.
The pop-up quick reply box is awesome and I can also security lock my messages for further privacy and of course switch-off the lame autoconvert to MMS, and whole host of other functions like interval reminders if I didn't hear a message come in, etc.
I switched immediately after I saw the TouchWiz SMS app would cut off long messages and you'd have to click on it to go to another page to read the whole message in size 36 font!! lol Also the bubbles look lame, the font is massive here as well and it spans across the whole screen making it less easy despite the different colours to differentiate between sender and receiver messages in a conversation thread.
Yes I just called Handcent fugly, while it is customizable I think the buttons and the bubbles are pretty rough and unpolished compared to the Samsung one
And I HATE having the New message button as a little icon on the upper left
I would love it if they spiced it up. I do like the custom backgrounds though
Chomp looks a little bit better but still not as polished.
I do keep both though and I like the bigger text in the message window on the default app
Hi Guys,

But some Apps, like Facebook, were not stretched to fit the Display.

find an app, i think its on the market, called Spare Parts, there is a compatibility Mode in there which needs disabling. That should sort it out for you.
Thank you.
can u make a screen that i can see whats different with 200dpi??thank u !!
200 DPI basically makes it "appear" that you have a higher resolution screen. Characters and icons are smaller on the screen so it appears that you have more space.
Changing to 200DPI is more of a nuisance than a blessing when using a screen smaller than 4.3 inches, which is why you'll see more and more people with the HD2 using it.
180 here for me and it's lovely, on the ROM in using Button Savior doesn't seem to want to work properly with 200, athough it has previously with other ROM's using 200 :s
Using Launcher Pro with 5 Rows x 6-7 Columns. The whole screen just seems alot less cluttered.

in there, about 1/2 way down, change the value of "ro.sf.lcd_density=***" to whatever you want the value to be, either 200 or 180, whatever you feel looks good.
Remember to restart after changing the value.
Or, i think there is an LCD Density changing app on the market, but ive never used it.

i guess the density effects the whole system (besides apps that run in an own window like fullscreen games)
I highly recommend Zeam Launcher as launcher, when DPI is changed,
it scales icons and labels very well, 5,6 or 7 columns is also nice!
Widgets size can also be changed when added to screen.

My Xoom is getting replaced for some cosmetic damage (weird dent in the back rubber out of the box). Anyway, I have been playing with it a lot while waiting on my replacement to get here...only thing is I have spent some time customizing my homescreens the way I want them. Some people are saying that your apps and settings will be restored automatically. Not sure about the home screen configs though. I will not know until middle of next week when I sign into my new Xoom that will replace the one I have now (twenty-five percent off lucky bastard).

If you backup your contacts etc. to your google account, you will get them back on the new device when you sign into your google account. you will also be able to re-download your apps as well as they are tied to your google account also.
Your homescreens/widgets won't be saved. On phones when you're using a custom launcher like ADW or Launcher Pro, you can backup your homescreen locales, but as far as I know there is no way to do that with the stock launcher on 2.3 or 3.0.
well crap...the homescreen config is what I cared about, that sucks.
Maybe someone can help me then, because here's my main problem:
I sync my Xoom bookmarks with my Chrome bookmarks. The problem is my Chrome looks like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Notice all the favicons with no text? Well, when I sync them with my Xoom, it just shows a bunch of blank tabs without names (because I remove them in Chrome). So I went through and added most of my bookmarks as icons on one of my homescreen pages, so I can see the favicons relevant to each. It took FOREVER to do. Is there an app or anything that will let me see my bookmark favicons correctly?
I mean I'm sure it took you some time, but it takes no time at all to get rid of that text in Chrome.

Right, and I don't want the text in Chrome because I know what the site is based off it's favicon, but the problem is on my Xoom it doesn't show the text or favicon, so I just have a bunch of blank bookmarks. They work when I click them, but I have no idea which one I am clicking. The only way I can see the favicon is by going to +/More/Bookmark and adding it to the desktop manually. I need a way I can see my bookmark favicons on my Xoom to know what bookmark I'm clicking.

(height box as high as the whole box), instead of what we get now.
Hi,
In 4.2, as I understand, I cant set a wallpaper without having it being cropped first - the tool selects different part of the image for landscape and portrait. I understand this, and now that it requires quite a big picture - (2560 for vertical part (in portrait mode) and even more for landscape, because the selected region will be used on, lets say ~3500 pixels (2560+scrolling). so the minimum picture to have and use to get 1to1 pixel is ~3500x2560). And thats fine, there are plenty of pictures like this.
However, when I select a picture to download, o select it as a whole, and not only the middle. So I'd like to put it the whole, as I see it.
It was allowed in older androids.
There is no problem of getting an image of 5020x2560 and higher, so I could use this, but the problem is that 4.2 doesnt allow it at the moment.
If I wanted to do this now, I would have to take the picture, add a big border around it, so the picture itself would be in the middle, and then after cropping, I would get the picture I wanted in the first place.
Hopefully you understood me, and can give advice on how to do this in 4.2.
Thank you
P.S. Just to clarify even more - If, lets say I have image 4000x3000, and I want to display all of it, not just middle, then just let me put it as a wallpaper, and when the tablet is in protrait, there will be more than 2560 pixels to take anyway, so no need of cropping.
Why is it doing cropping anyway?
No scrolling, but this may help:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ridgelineapps.simpleimagewallpaper&hl=en
I search for 1600x2560 wallpapers, and then set the image to the app linked above. The upside of no scrolling is that moving between homescreens is really smooth (it was already smooth, but no stutters at all).
As far as your question goes, I remember using some ROMs that allowed me to re-size the inner boxes (the one that has vertical and horizontal rectangles on top of one another) inside the picture cropping box, is that feature present in 4.2? If so, enlarge the size of the box, and then you'll be able to see the whole picture, not just the middle, when scrolling around.

I just tried this app, but I got much better results by downloading a 2400x1600 wallpaper and stretching the crop box to fill it (it fits exactly).
I'm in the middle of writing a wallpaper app for the N10, depending on what access is available to the wallpaper setting APIs I'll have it automatically set pixel perfect if possible.
