It only says T-mobile and AT&T, but Sprint is most likely included as well.
Since the Epic is such a drastically different device I expect it to be updated a week or two later than the others, but I hope I'm wrong

Rest of the world means it's coming over to US market, and the 2 providers listed on there are att/tmobile, because they are GSMs like their european counterparts. verizon and sprint aren't, which is why we aren't on there.
Finally! I just hope they don't pull nothing stupid pending the beta testing and delay it. That would royally suck.

The tweet is just the same old stuff from Samsung UK that has been reported many times before. The way I read it the source of the detailed schedule, including dates for AT&T and T-Mobile's GSM phones, is not the Twitter feed. There is no source stated for those dates at all.
(But it is a blog. And we all know that blogs are never wrong.)
From the timetable I saw (direct from Samsung), Captivate on the 11th, Vibrant on the 15th (I believe), Fascinate on the 22nd, Epic on the 29th.

I wouldn't say exactly 20th but 19th-21st seems like the possible days...unless sprint pushes the date up like T-Mobile did.
This just means thats when they are having an episode about it, how do you know this is the release date?

The theory is that since the Captivate and the Vibrant's episodes were on the "official" release dates, that the Epic's episode could be on it's official release date. While the Vibrant was actually available July 15th, the phone wasn't actually officially to be released until the 21st.
I'm personally hoping for an earlier date... like, Sunday, July 25th. I've saved up my dough for it already.
Wahh! That's a bit long of a wait. Im hoping the first week of August. But middle august gives me time to put up my nexus for sale.

I wonder if this phone will be like the other galaxies? What I mean is I've read reviews that say it has a kinda (cheap) plastic feel to it. I hope not. I hope the build quality feels solid. Only reason I'm interested is I miss the hardware keyboard I had with the moment. Some might think I'm crazy, but I'd prefer this over my evo. Oh yeah, I'd yank that stupid touchwiz out for vanilla or AOSP in a heartbeat!

There is already a ClockworkMod recovery for the Galaxy S:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734166
I would guess that some mods can be used with all the models. Roms or kernels would be unique to each model and carrier because of slight hardware differences and radios operating frequencies and technologies. I'm no hacker or dev, but that's what my common sense is guessing.

I'm the person in my store who was selected to get the device early. We get it a month before it gets released publicly, so we can train our coworkers on the device. I'm expecting it this week, so I expect the release to be around 8/20 (as was rumored).
I just got the Samsung Vibrant a few days ago but lately I have noticed a bit of lag in like the market place and even when you first turn it on. I heard that Android 2.2 will fix this so when is it coming out as an update on my phone?

No one has said October, this is purely speculation. I'm assuming we will hear more at IFA, which starts Septemer 2. Samsung will have a large presence at the event and promises many big announcements. I expect froyo and gps updates to be among these announcements.

Doubt that. IFA is more of an electronics showcase event. Not really a mobile phone event like Mobile Congress held in Spain.

I would have to say that is incorrect.. 2.2 is actually "coming soon" and even though they have constantly said that without a date, I still believe it would be in September.
There was a tweet from I believe Samsung's Official Twitter that I cannot find at the moment but stated we would see 2.2 in up to 8 weeks, which September would make sense, unless it came out earlier. Do not hold me on this, as I cannot find the tweet to confirm.
I am also sure the fix will probably come with 2.2 and if not, 2.2 will not be far behind it the GPS fix if they did it for 2.1 and then released 2.2, once it meets T-Mobile's approval which I doubt will take long.
Just read tweets like this, and I would myself take a guess that September we could likely see the 2.2 Froyo update to our phones.

Seems like general consensus is that froyo OTA updates will start coming out in september with some or many people actually getting the update in October. one rumor states that fixes to gps and lag, etc, will be bundled with the froyo update. all conjecture.

As ususal, Engadget gets it wrong. They can't even read a press release, and never bothered to pick up the phone and call Samsung. This announcement was datelined from London and about the UK, which is clear from its context.
See also this thread in Vibrant forum.
p.s. As recently as a few minutes ago, Samsung's Galaxy S support site for the U.S. on Twitter was saying there is not ETA for Froyo on this side of the pond at all.
Deployment for the Epic is even more complicated than the rollout for the GSM-based variants in the U.S. If the Epic gets Froyo in November, I will be most pleasantly surprised.
one way or another it seems like typical samsung taking forever to release an update

I'm inclined to believe this since Rogers in Canada is saying their version of the Captivate will get Froyo in 2011. If Froyo was ready in 2010, everywhere else in the world, why would Rogers tell their customers to expect it in 2011?

What? You want to wait until 2012 to get a new OS update?
What does 2.2 offer that you can't have on 2.1? I just don't see what the big deal is anyways. Is everyone that unsatisfied with their phone that they are getting bent out of shape about 2.2? This is Sprint and Samsung we are talking about right? I fully expect it to be here in January or February. In the mean time, I will enjoy my Epic with 2.1 Which is still better than the Evo on 2.2, imho.

I heard flash sucked with 2.2 but that's just me. Granted it's nice to have and it's something the I-suck doesn't have so that's always a plus.
Phone is plenty fast for me but I don't do anything extensive on it. Even when it drops I'll probably still wait a while to see if it's even worth it. Reading the Evo forums, it sounded like it was more trouble than it was worth and broke more things than fixed.

Thats because its on a Evo lol
Yeah I went to the Sprint store when I went and bought my case for my Epic and messed around with an Evo..be it a display, and they had a screen protector on it, the screened looked REALLY grainy, and it was very very slow. I'm guessing it hadn't been restarted in awhile and had every app open on it running in the background. I checked it and sure enough it was running on 2.2.
I just got off the phone with Verizon Wireless Customer Service. I was questioning about setting changes to improve my signal strength. She said there was nothing she knew of. I then asked if she knew if the 2.2 update would bring with it a new baseband to improve the signal strength. She then said, well it is available for download, go ahead and download it and see. However, I am not in an area to do that. I am in Central Ohio, so I really have no idea if it is truely out or not!

It's been said multiple times in the past month that they will be coming out in November.
This from Samsung USA's twitter as well - "yes. all current Galaxy S phones in the USA will be upgraded to Android 2.2 this year."
Actually I'm pretty sure that it W's confirmed that the particular comment you are talking about DID NOT apply to the variants in the states. However I was just being sarcastic anyway. It doesn't really matter to me at this point as froyo from Samsung is literally going to suck ass because the one thing that kills these phones is the one thing a firmware update wont fix, and that's RFS. Anyway, good day sir. Hope you are correct, that way we can get some good froyo ROMS rollin

The OP didn't say we'll get Gingerbread in mid-May, he said Europe will get it in mid-May and we'll get it after them. That doesn't mean we'll get it in mid-May, or May at all.
Engadget phrased it better, though:
"The company has this morning released word that it intends to update its entire Galaxy S family line, starting with models in the UK and Nordic countries from the middle of this month. The rest of the globe, including North America, will follow suit "according to the regional plan."
Obviously, we have no idea what the "regional plan" is -- so there's no saying when we or any of the US carriers will actually see Gingerbread.
not to mention the last official word we had on froyo said november... got it in april...

id assume it wouldnt come any earlier than late Fall for this phone...by which time many of us will have long jumped ship
CDMA plus Bing plus hardware differences. This'll be a fun wait.
As far as I remember, the samsung dev team tried to unify the devices under froyo a lot more than they were under eclair. For eclair they had a team for each phone, then for froyo they had one tam for all phones. I can't remember where I read it, but maybe that fact will speed updates.

You also have to take into account that most of the Galaxy S lineup consists of the i9000 series (GSM). Once Europe is updated, the i9000 series on AT&T will probably be next.
There hasn't been any word for the i500 timeline yet.
Gotta remember, the Galaxy S is the i9000 we just have a variant. It would be nice if we got it on the i500 but I seriously doubt it, especially since it just said galaxy s not the galaxy s line. Which means fascinate, epic, vibrant and captivate were not mentioned in the press release. In fact they went out of their way to even mention specific models. "GALAXY Ace/Gio/Fit/mini"
I guess I'm being pessimistic seeing how we were treated over Android 2.2
Well I read in the article on android central it said Galaxy S line, where the press release from Samsung said galaxy s.
Another thing to remember is its being released by Samsung, we will still have to wait for VZW to get there hands on it, and bloat the hell out of it, before they release it. And im sure this is on the back burner for them at this point so I dont see an ota being pushed out anytime soon.

Samsung puts everything together and sends it to Verizon. AFAIK, Verizon does nothing with putting the ROM itself together, just final testing.
this is XDA! once the Devs get their hands on a leak we will have a few roms before any official 2.3 comes out. Much like most of us had 2.2 WELL before the official came out!

While that may be true, since most of the US Galaxy S variants have some form of bloatware, wouldn't that mean carriers tell Samsung what extras to add before it's finished?
Bow chika wah wah
I highly doubt Verizon updates the Fascinate to Gingerbread. If they do, I'm going to say, early 2012 if they decide we are worth it.
Hey some news is better than no news!

Maybe I am wrong, but verizon can dictate software under contract, but I don't think they can stop samsung from updating their products. If samsung programs it I think they would be none to happy if verizon refused to push the update.
