LOL at that.
Samsung's gonna take a while, and the 'official' news hasn't really worked out in the past either.

The OP didn't say we'll get Gingerbread in mid-May, he said Europe will get it in mid-May and we'll get it after them. That doesn't mean we'll get it in mid-May, or May at all.
Engadget phrased it better, though:
"The company has this morning released word that it intends to update its entire Galaxy S family line, starting with models in the UK and Nordic countries from the middle of this month. The rest of the globe, including North America, will follow suit "according to the regional plan."
Obviously, we have no idea what the "regional plan" is -- so there's no saying when we or any of the US carriers will actually see Gingerbread.
not to mention the last official word we had on froyo said november... got it in april...

With us being cdma we will most likely be the very last to get it

id assume it wouldnt come any earlier than late Fall for this phone...by which time many of us will have long jumped ship
CDMA plus Bing plus hardware differences. This'll be a fun wait.
As far as I remember, the samsung dev team tried to unify the devices under froyo a lot more than they were under eclair. For eclair they had a team for each phone, then for froyo they had one tam for all phones. I can't remember where I read it, but maybe that fact will speed updates.

You also have to take into account that most of the Galaxy S lineup consists of the i9000 series (GSM). Once Europe is updated, the i9000 series on AT&T will probably be next.
There hasn't been any word for the i500 timeline yet.
Gotta remember, the Galaxy S is the i9000 we just have a variant. It would be nice if we got it on the i500 but I seriously doubt it, especially since it just said galaxy s not the galaxy s line. Which means fascinate, epic, vibrant and captivate were not mentioned in the press release. In fact they went out of their way to even mention specific models. "GALAXY Ace/Gio/Fit/mini"
I guess I'm being pessimistic seeing how we were treated over Android 2.2
Well I read in the article on android central it said Galaxy S line, where the press release from Samsung said galaxy s.
Another thing to remember is its being released by Samsung, we will still have to wait for VZW to get there hands on it, and bloat the hell out of it, before they release it. And im sure this is on the back burner for them at this point so I dont see an ota being pushed out anytime soon.

Samsung puts everything together and sends it to Verizon. AFAIK, Verizon does nothing with putting the ROM itself together, just final testing.
this is XDA! once the Devs get their hands on a leak we will have a few roms before any official 2.3 comes out. Much like most of us had 2.2 WELL before the official came out!

While that may be true, since most of the US Galaxy S variants have some form of bloatware, wouldn't that mean carriers tell Samsung what extras to add before it's finished?

Maybe I am wrong, but verizon can dictate software under contract, but I don't think they can stop samsung from updating their products. If samsung programs it I think they would be none to happy if verizon refused to push the update.

This is for the galaxy s.... IN SPAIN. This does not apply to people with the vibrant. I would assume the U.S. is more of a priority to Samsung, therefore froyo should be out before then.

Well, Samsung is a Korean company first off. Second of all, carriers don't lock/change their handsets like the US does, so it gets much easier to update when you take the carrier out of the equation. This is why Europe/Asia get new phones and the updates for those phones before the US.
That is just how it is.

And simply by the first launch day, US version of the Galaxy S is much later than the regular i9000, so it is not hard to guess the U.S. variants would get it later than the international version.

But I'm sure once we get Froyo the same people will be complaining that we don't have Gingerbread yet because the Nexus 1 is getting it in December.

Damn straight! I wish I were mod, then I could lock each and every thread about Froyo.
Lol whats funny is that engadget also reported that the UK Offical Samsung Mobile twitter page reported that
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/08/t-mobile-says-samsung-gps-fix-coming-in-september/
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/08/samsung-testing-gps-fix-for-galaxy-s-phones/
See two pieces of proof something is coming in September, we still have 10 days so lets see what happens.
So We do have like 3 Dates if you want to call it that.
One is September 23, 2010 for Froyo (2.2) which is supposibly for the International Galaxy S. Maybe it'll be compatible with all. Who Knows?
Two is September 29, 2010 for Froyo (2.2) which is for Galaxy S, IDK if all phones or Just International. IDK. I got this date from T-Mobile TODAY. I Called acted like i didnt know Anything about Android and was asking questions about The Samsung Vibrant. The guy said it comes with Android 2.1 but it'll get Android 2.2 soon. I asked if he knew a date, he said hes not for sure but he Read on a Forum somewhere about September 29, 2010. We'll See.
Three is Late October 2010. Which was told TODAY by Samsung Spain and posted on Engadget. So we have 10 days til September is over we'll see what happens. Thats all i know for now.
I'm Really eager like the rest of you to find out when our phones will get 2.2. Not only for Speed Improvement but for GPS Fixes (if implemented), 3 button hardware fix (if implemented) and of course Flash 10, Chome to Phone, the New G-Mail, Google Voice, and Tethering etc.
As eager as I am to get Froyo, I'd rather wait a little longer and let Samsung do it right than have them push something that's been rushed and running like crap. Based on the recent leaks I've seen, the most current Froyo builds have been buggy and not optimized at all.
I think late October/early November is my limit though. If they push it back further, I'm not supporting Samsung anymore. I'll switch to the G2. I can trust HTC will for sure push Gingerbread over to that phone. Who knows what Samsung will do with the Galaxy S then.
Fanboys need to stfu. You do realize many of us have buggy devices, and the fixes are being held up for froyo, right?
Dom't be idiots. Use your brains. The OS is a small issue right now. We want oir phones to work as advertised.
Yes, these buggy devices ARE complete and utter crap.

As ususal, Engadget gets it wrong. They can't even read a press release, and never bothered to pick up the phone and call Samsung. This announcement was datelined from London and about the UK, which is clear from its context.
See also this thread in Vibrant forum.
p.s. As recently as a few minutes ago, Samsung's Galaxy S support site for the U.S. on Twitter was saying there is not ETA for Froyo on this side of the pond at all.
Deployment for the Epic is even more complicated than the rollout for the GSM-based variants in the U.S. If the Epic gets Froyo in November, I will be most pleasantly surprised.
one way or another it seems like typical samsung taking forever to release an update

I'm inclined to believe this since Rogers in Canada is saying their version of the Captivate will get Froyo in 2011. If Froyo was ready in 2010, everywhere else in the world, why would Rogers tell their customers to expect it in 2011?

What? You want to wait until 2012 to get a new OS update?
What does 2.2 offer that you can't have on 2.1? I just don't see what the big deal is anyways. Is everyone that unsatisfied with their phone that they are getting bent out of shape about 2.2? This is Sprint and Samsung we are talking about right? I fully expect it to be here in January or February. In the mean time, I will enjoy my Epic with 2.1 Which is still better than the Evo on 2.2, imho.

I heard flash sucked with 2.2 but that's just me. Granted it's nice to have and it's something the I-suck doesn't have so that's always a plus.
Phone is plenty fast for me but I don't do anything extensive on it. Even when it drops I'll probably still wait a while to see if it's even worth it. Reading the Evo forums, it sounded like it was more trouble than it was worth and broke more things than fixed.

Thats because its on a Evo lol
Yeah I went to the Sprint store when I went and bought my case for my Epic and messed around with an Evo..be it a display, and they had a screen protector on it, the screened looked REALLY grainy, and it was very very slow. I'm guessing it hadn't been restarted in awhile and had every app open on it running in the background. I checked it and sure enough it was running on 2.2.
I just got off the phone with Verizon Wireless Customer Service. I was questioning about setting changes to improve my signal strength. She said there was nothing she knew of. I then asked if she knew if the 2.2 update would bring with it a new baseband to improve the signal strength. She then said, well it is available for download, go ahead and download it and see. However, I am not in an area to do that. I am in Central Ohio, so I really have no idea if it is truely out or not!

It's been said multiple times in the past month that they will be coming out in November.
This from Samsung USA's twitter as well - "yes. all current Galaxy S phones in the USA will be upgraded to Android 2.2 this year."
Actually I'm pretty sure that it W's confirmed that the particular comment you are talking about DID NOT apply to the variants in the states. However I was just being sarcastic anyway. It doesn't really matter to me at this point as froyo from Samsung is literally going to suck ass because the one thing that kills these phones is the one thing a firmware update wont fix, and that's RFS. Anyway, good day sir. Hope you are correct, that way we can get some good froyo ROMS rollin

I still think it won't be until February/March. Kinda ironic that t-mo is the first to release the update since they were the ones that came under fire for allegedly holding up 2.2 until the fascinate 4G came out.. hmmm..
You never know. Sprint likes to be "the first" at things. Maybe this will put pressure on them to roll out froyo sooner then later as well.

I can promise you that we won't get 2.2 before the Captivate. Past that, I have no idea. It seems the problem is really getting the CDMA differences worked out. That said, I'd hate to be a Continuum user right now.

Google has introduced a new paradigm with their frequent OS updates, and I don't think the carriers have really considered updates a top priority. One thing is for certain, flood their Facebook pages and Twitter accts. I'm pretty certain that anytime anything regarding any topic is posted anywhere regarding T-Mo, a flood of Vibrant users respond with calls for the Froyo update.
And I guess the best thing is if you can get something written up in one of the big tech media sites. The carrier execs may not be reading XDA, but they sure start running for the mikes when they get a black eye in Engadget or TechCrunch.
Sprint has tweeted that the Epic will get Froyo ASAP, but this isn't new . I'm still going to hope that T-mobile will pressure Sprint to roll out Froyo.

ASAP huh? That could be tomorrow or a year from now depending on whenever they feel it's "possible".

If it really is true, based on what the Tmo CMO stated, that the hold up is caused by the carriers needing to add whatever software they think we need. Well, that's just ridiculous. They should just stop messing with apps not everyone wants on their phones and just release Froyo or whatever is in the pipelines. Perhaps we should start a campaign to get manufacturers and carriers to move closer putting stock android on their phones. Just a thought.
Maybe we'll see the official soon?

Don't count on Sprint releasing it until late June. When the articles talk about Galaxy S phones they are mostly talking I9000 in Europe. Samsung releases the code to US carriers, they screw it up, Samsung tries to fix it, they screw it up some more, they release it, pull it back. Release it.
Do you BONSAI?
It sounds like even if it won't be untill late June they are trying to be more on the ball after making us wait so long for Froyo. I remember getting my Epic a month after it came out and the guy at the store reassured me that Froyo would be out by the end of Sept lol. Not that I don't take everything they say with a large grain of salt.
After trying out EE03 I'm very excited for GB to drop on the Epic
