Samsung Epic 4G (SPH-d700) EP.1
Whoo hoo! I've been eagerly awaiting this! I continue to save my pennies for this phone...
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
I wouldn't say exactly 20th but 19th-21st seems like the possible days...unless sprint pushes the date up like T-Mobile did.
This just means thats when they are having an episode about it, how do you know this is the release date?

The theory is that since the Captivate and the Vibrant's episodes were on the "official" release dates, that the Epic's episode could be on it's official release date. While the Vibrant was actually available July 15th, the phone wasn't actually officially to be released until the 21st.
I'm personally hoping for an earlier date... like, Sunday, July 25th. I've saved up my dough for it already.
Wahh! That's a bit long of a wait. Im hoping the first week of August. But middle august gives me time to put up my nexus for sale.

That won't be happening, with 100% certainty.
Now I can't wait to hold this bad boy to see how it feels. However, I'd have to see some Cyanogen love before I jumped ship.

Back to topic...
I wonder if this phone will be like the other galaxies? What I mean is I've read reviews that say it has a kinda (cheap) plastic feel to it. I hope not. I hope the build quality feels solid. Only reason I'm interested is I miss the hardware keyboard I had with the moment. Some might think I'm crazy, but I'd prefer this over my evo. Oh yeah, I'd yank that stupid touchwiz out for vanilla or AOSP in a heartbeat!

No idea. I know that one of the members of the CM team has been developing a recovery for the Galaxy S, so it probably isn't out of the question.

@herbthehammer - its not crazy, this phone is a lot better then the EVO..and only reason why it feels like that is because it is compact making it VERY light...

There is already a ClockworkMod recovery for the Galaxy S:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734166
I would guess that some mods can be used with all the models. Roms or kernels would be unique to each model and carrier because of slight hardware differences and radios operating frequencies and technologies. I'm no hacker or dev, but that's what my common sense is guessing.

Anyone have a twitter and can Twitter that Ep1 on August 20th to SamsungMobileUS

I want to see if they will cough up and admit it was the release date...make sure to mention the other Ep1 were always on release dates..

Wow, 100% sure? Do you something we don't? I have a friend who asked a sprint sales rep here in Florida about the Epic and he told him there were no new devices coming out until the holidays. That's pretty sad how some sprint sales reps are so clueless about new devices. That's not a dig at you and it probably wont released the first week of Aug.
I'm sure noobnl will put out a good ROM for it, I decided to take this one over the evo, sorry HTC =/ I can't wait!
The 20th is so far away! I keep waking up hoping its the 20th, but its not even the end of July yet! *impatience*
Just saw pictures of the upcoming HTC Vision, and that keyboard doesn't have ANYTHING on the epic!

I'm the person in my store who was selected to get the device early. We get it a month before it gets released publicly, so we can train our coworkers on the device. I'm expecting it this week, so I expect the release to be around 8/20 (as was rumored).

As ususal, Engadget gets it wrong. They can't even read a press release, and never bothered to pick up the phone and call Samsung. This announcement was datelined from London and about the UK, which is clear from its context.
See also this thread in Vibrant forum.
p.s. As recently as a few minutes ago, Samsung's Galaxy S support site for the U.S. on Twitter was saying there is not ETA for Froyo on this side of the pond at all.
Deployment for the Epic is even more complicated than the rollout for the GSM-based variants in the U.S. If the Epic gets Froyo in November, I will be most pleasantly surprised.
one way or another it seems like typical samsung taking forever to release an update
I just got word from my sprint connect to not expect froyo until mid-late december... he said it may be well into january before sprint pushes it out. let's hope he's wrong!

Typical sprint. Its like a perfect storm of two companies that look at support only as an expense, not as retaining future customers.

Anyone who expected something sooner has been misinformed, or just thinking wishfully. Many examples of both errors have populated comments in the various forums for weeks or months.
I hope they put the Sprint ID or whatever it is on it so I can do away with TW all together. Looked at the Samsung Transform review and was jealous that there was no TW.
I was hoping the delay was due to Sprint ID
In other words.....maybe on the next phone.

I'm inclined to believe this since Rogers in Canada is saying their version of the Captivate will get Froyo in 2011. If Froyo was ready in 2010, everywhere else in the world, why would Rogers tell their customers to expect it in 2011?
Samsung is a joke when it comes to software updates...almost on par with htc gimping allof there products

What? You want to wait until 2012 to get a new OS update?
What does 2.2 offer that you can't have on 2.1? I just don't see what the big deal is anyways. Is everyone that unsatisfied with their phone that they are getting bent out of shape about 2.2? This is Sprint and Samsung we are talking about right? I fully expect it to be here in January or February. In the mean time, I will enjoy my Epic with 2.1 Which is still better than the Evo on 2.2, imho.

I heard flash sucked with 2.2 but that's just me. Granted it's nice to have and it's something the I-suck doesn't have so that's always a plus.
Phone is plenty fast for me but I don't do anything extensive on it. Even when it drops I'll probably still wait a while to see if it's even worth it. Reading the Evo forums, it sounded like it was more trouble than it was worth and broke more things than fixed.

You want to exchange one piece of bloat for another piece?
Why not just ship it with stock Android (and more than 3 screens) and then allow us to customize our devices as we see fit?

Yeah I went to the Sprint store when I went and bought my case for my Epic and messed around with an Evo..be it a display, and they had a screen protector on it, the screened looked REALLY grainy, and it was very very slow. I'm guessing it hadn't been restarted in awhile and had every app open on it running in the background. I checked it and sure enough it was running on 2.2.

This just my 2 cents. I believe that the Verizon update leaked about on the 1/10 is to allow the phone to be updated by Kies. Granted, this week is CES, and Verizon is lauching new LTE phones, but I also see this as an opportunity for Samsung to announce updates to their Galaxy S lines in the US. Considering how many of these phones have sold, if there isn't an announcement at CES, there may never be one, lol. But I believe they will say something, because they want to build up the Galaxy S brands, and you really can't do that by screwing consumers out of an update for a Free Mobile OS.
It is really most likely a bug fix, hence why it's called MR2 (Maintainence Release). Most likely it's DL09. NOT froyo.
It may actually be our beloved froyo that we've been waiting for.
But honestly, I'm waiting for jt and co's gingerbread...
Who cares .... for those who don't frequent IRC, here's today's status: "You'll notice there is not AOSP status here, thats because we got the .35 kernel booting and have moved to gingerbread...have a nice day"
i would be on IRC just watching whats going on if nothing else... but i couldnt tell you how to access it lol

It is good to know that jt is close to getting gingerbread running though, that will be pretty sweet.

It looks like, whoever gets to it first, we're going to see some sort of update in the pretty near future.
Can't wait to see what is going to come about over the course of this month.
So I just spoke to my a rep at my local sprint store about returning my Evo (bought Feb 27-2011) within my 30 days. She told me no problem to come on in. I then asked about how my refund comes and my upgrade returning, all OK there. I brought up the Evo 3D and she stated a HTC rep was in the store yesterday saying it may be 1 year before the Evo 3D is released! I was suprised and asked about the Nexus S, same answer "could be a year away, though she didnt seem as sure as the release being that far away. I know they want me to keep my current phone, that way I pay full price for the Evo 3D, can it really be 1 year away from release?
Also has anyone heard on the price for the Evo 3D with available upgrade of course.
Thanks

Has any carrier ever announced a phone with a year's delay? That would be horrible!
Yeah, I really think she was trying to discourage me and have me keep my Evo. Like I said though she did seem sure of the time frame though, and when I asked about nexus s she did not. Most likely she really couldn't due to the pre order from sprint website! Have we seen prices for the Evo 3D? If you can't tell I am struggling with returning this first gen Evo and getting the 3D or the S. In the mean time I would be purchasing a Evo from eBay with my refund. Dang why did she say that!!!!

All I am saying is what I was told. And being no release date set technically it could be 1 year away. I highly doubt it, but she claimed to have had a HTC Rep in the store telling them it is a far from this summer.

Don't count on Sprint releasing it until late June. When the articles talk about Galaxy S phones they are mostly talking I9000 in Europe. Samsung releases the code to US carriers, they screw it up, Samsung tries to fix it, they screw it up some more, they release it, pull it back. Release it.
Do you BONSAI?
It sounds like even if it won't be untill late June they are trying to be more on the ball after making us wait so long for Froyo. I remember getting my Epic a month after it came out and the guy at the store reassured me that Froyo would be out by the end of Sept lol. Not that I don't take everything they say with a large grain of salt.
After trying out EE03 I'm very excited for GB to drop on the Epic

That doesn't mean anything, as soon as the next best thing comes out the old ones are dropped fast. Phone companies are notorious for this.(Verizon is the big one) The Samsung Moment was EOL'ed, but still got updates. The Droid was EOL'ed as well but Motorola and Verizon still put out a Froyo update for it, and even replaced Droids that had the camera issue with Froyo with a Droid 2. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised of the Evo was EOL'ed sometime after the 3D's release.
