from tmobile regarding the "loose hinges":
After investigating various hinge tension settings to find the best user experience, HTC engineered the T-Mobile G2 in such a way that it can be easily opened and closed with just one finger. While this tension level may let the phone open on its own if held in an inverse position, this does not represent a defect in the hinge mechanism.
regarding the random restarts:
As for the phone randomly restarting this is a known issue and is being researched for resolution. I would need to transfer you to our Technical Care Department for further assistance.

On a side note, I OC'ed my phone using the VISIONary temp root and and I am running @ 1.42 Mhz, and this this thing is not only flying, but I no longer have reboots, or at least as frequent. I had one today, but it was after it had dropped back to 800 Mhz, and the batt was somewhere around 25%...this maybe due to the profiles I have set....as the batt dwindles down, I am gutting down on the power requirements to conserve batt.
2nd side note....my first G2 got stuck a few time on reboot on the G2 screen as you mentioned.....they replaced that one without any objections.
As for the OTA, Tech Suppoirt does not ahve any news nor knowledge that one is coming out. They actually referred me to TMONews.com to see what is developing....lol...they refered me to a blog!!! SAD!!!!

Orale.

I think I figured out the random reboots with the help of some others.. here out my story. So me and my best friend both have G2's. Love the phone btw. he has never had a random reboot until this day and I allways get them. I live in a basement and he lives in a house with perfect reception. I am pretty certain it has something to do with the reception going in and out. he came over the other day and we were hanging out at my house and his phone random rebooted for the first time ever.. and I allways get them because most of the time I am down here. But when I am out and about for the day above level lol.. I never get them.. or RARELY get them. Hinges have been fine for the both of us also. Other than that I love the phone.. HOpfully with the OTA update I heard about will fix that because I hear the update includes a new radio update.. and last time the radio update REALLY Fixed my reception issues with the G1 in my basement.. SO can't wait for that. Thanx a lot for reading

g2 stability

im sure we've all had complaints about loose hinges and how strong and stable this phone is. coming from a g1 and being a mechanic, i put my phone through some serious strains including: full multiple water submerging, falling from third floor, banging aginst walls and through all this i had no cracked screens, broken malfunctioning or missing buttons. note: i didnt do any of these on purpose.
Now with the g2 that i bought from radio shack, i managed to shake the hinge ridiculously and it didnt fall apart and WW3 didnt ensue, considering how everyone is having problems with this phone, you have two options
1: return the phone and get another type of phone
2: stick with the phone, buy a body glove and screen protector and wait for root
i cant really comment about software, signal, reboots, and other problems like that because i havent experienced any of this. but as far as how strong the phone is, my personal experience is pretty damn good
p.s. the hinge is slightly overrated considering it doesnt just slide out instead it slides up and then out. my point being if it just slid out then it would warrant more of a need to worry. but this is my personal opinion and expirience
I've been using my G2 for about five or so days, and I haven't had any reboots, freezes, slow-downs, or anything along those lines.
The Z-hinge on mine seems OK. It does open when I hold the phone facing down, but that's really not how I plan on using my G2. It doesn't open/close during any sort of "normal" use, and that works for me. I can see how it would be an issue for some, but it simply isn't for me.
I also don't care about the internal memory, as that wasn't why I got the phone. It wasn't the selling point for me, and I don't like storing things on my phone's internal memory. The 8GB micro SC is plenty enough for most realistic scenarios, and certainly more than enough for me.
To those who are debating whether or not they want this phone: do yourself a favor and go to a local T-Mobile retail store and check it out for yourself. Don't settle on other peoples' opinion. I think that you'll conclude that the pros far outweigh the cons.
I am on my second G2 with the third on the way due to multiple issues. These issues include loose hinges(more about that in a minute) very poor reception to no reception in exact same areas where My Vibrant and Nexus One get good reception, and the black screen random shutting down issues as well as dropping calls. The loose hinge issue was not a big factor for me until I purchased the gel skin and hard case from T Mobile. With these cases on the phone it just slides open as you pick it up or handle it at all. With all that being said I do like the phone and hate to give up on it. I am hoping the current OTA will address the reception and dropping calls issues. IMO this is an excellent phone that could and hopefully will be a Super phone. My biggest concern is that as each day goes by more black screen issues etc come up, Mine just happened today after 4 days of use.

I don't mean to come off as a G2 fanboy, but it sounds to me more like you're doing something to cause the black screens, not the phone.
I haven't heard of anyone having "black screen random shutting down" issues and I've never experienced anything like it myself.
What apps are you using? It's possible you're using an unstable application that's crashing the phone.

I can confirm having this same issue, not using any out of the normal software or even any of the temp root stuff. Also apps like twitter and webbrowser will forceclose over and over again until I reboot the phone.

this is a real problem
happens to me once a day or so with completely stock g2 and just a few apps from the market
wow its really messed up that you guys are having this problem because this phone is really damn great. quick question though. where did u guys buy yours?
i got mine from radio shack and no problem for me.
my thoughts are a possibility of a bad batch, just like how some hinges are loose and some arent.

1: t-mobile store $264 ($50 mail in rebate bull crap)
2: t-mobile shipment (same as above)

I have the stock apps that come with the phone and a couple of others that I have uninstalled and reinstalled and they are not the problem. I know some people have a hard time accepting that this phone has issues on a widespread basis. Each day it seems that another issue just seems to pop up, but once again let me say that I do like this phone and hate to give up on it. I just hope that the OTA that is supposed to being rolled out will fix all or the majority of the issues.
Reboots, freezing and black screens are well documented and widespread. It's always happens in low/no signal area, someone said their log showed that it hangs on some audio libs. In any case, I hope that upcoming OTA will fix that (it does include new radio).
Hinges IMHO are not as bad as people make them out to be, at least not to me.

How many times did you exchange your mt4g?

Let The Games Begin...
Post And State Your Reason(s) why you exchanged it.
Im on my 3rd, going to the 4th!
Reason(s): Washed Displays, Wifi Busted
I'm on my third MT4G and here's why:
- First one had a loud creaking sound at the bottom, most noticeably when pressing the back button.
- Second one was dropped less than two feet from the ground with the Flex case on it, and the phone's bezel was scratched and misaligned.
5 times
1. change color
2. power button quit working
3. Tried to get a good screen
4. Tried to get a good screen.
5. I got the good screen Happy so far.
this is messed up i bought mine from craigslist brand new and i called tmo try to exchange it they said they wont do it. because i did not buy it from them. the ime number is not in their system what can i do?
Got mine the day it released and still on the same original one. No creaking, good screen, cameras centered.
Knock on wood...
Exchanged once to get a good screen

Just call them up and ask for technical support. Tell them you want to verify the IMEI number is correct in the system so you can get the OTA update. They may not find it in the system but they can manually put it in. I know because I called them 2 days ago and they told me mine was not in the system. She put it in for me manually.
Then you could call them back up and ask them for a replacement as it will be in the system. you don't have to tell them where you bought it.
If you are the very first person to use the phone, warranty will apply to you. If anyone else has used the phone, your screwed because the warranty only applies to them. I'm still in my original one, I see no reason to exchange it, I swear some people just abuse the system. Eventually it'll end up ruining it for the rest of us.

Exchanged once because the phone earpiece made a buzzing noise.
This is my second one. The first device had a dead pixel and everything else was great. The second one has a clean screen but it's the washed one and it creaks from the bottom of the phone, but the most frustrating is the GPS, it's not working , it detects like 10 SATs but never locks the location. Wifi is acting weird too, it tries to connect to the same network like 2 or 3 times before it connects . I don't like to replace phones that often, if I have to replace a phone more than one time it does say something about quality or their quality check process. I mean how hard is it to check the phone for a misplaced FFC (for me I don't care about that ) ? I am done with the phone and I am going to try the NS. I liked the phone, and I can't understand HTC, how can you build such a great phone and forget about such basic quality issues. I think companies try to save on quality tests and throw their production directly to people to work as cheap test engineers. If a company knows that their phones are that good they will not make it that easy to replace the phone for several number of times for the same customer.
First one exchanged because of creaking buttons.
Second one exchanged because of light leak from bottom edge of screen and a gap between the bezel and the body.
I'm on my third one. Build is fine. Battery life is questionable but tolerable. Screen quality is fine for me but pales in comparison to samoled. I'm keeping this one until the next best thing comes around.

if you want quality control Samsung is not the company to go to I had my Vibrant replaced 4 times all had problems right out the box.
first phone GPS all have this problem plus the phone would freeze where I had to take out battery.
second phone a visible line down the screen.
third phone. turned it on and it just started opening apps and settings randomly.
fourth phone no bugs yet but it is rooted with custom rom on it now and my wife uses it I just got the mytouch 4g sick of samsung.
I bought 2 myTouch 4G and exchanged both of them 1 time. One for a bad screen (see this) and the other one for bad color screen.
After reading this thread. I regret selling my Blackberry 9700. That, and the battery life still sucks. Eff you HTC. Make better quality equipment.
Hoping nothing eff's up on my phone. I use it for work, I'm almost regretting paying in full for it as I need a phone that lasts ALL day under email and internet use. IE. 9am-2am.
I'm hoping third time's the charm....
1st: Creaky back button, sucky HSPA+ speeds
2nd: leaking battery acid from battery!
I'm pretty sure this battery was FUBAR out the box. With moderate use its dead by 4pm, even with using task killer. Whats the best/fastest story I can tell tmo for my first exchange? I've had the phone almost 3 weeks. Would the store do the exchange, or do I need to call Tech Support?
1. Phone app kept fcing and acore fcing.
2. Wanting a better screen and where the bottom on the screen meets the buttons. The light was showing theough the seam.
3. Got a chinese phone. All issues resloved. Very happy now.

Well i was 5 days over my 14 day remorse period. just went in and told then i would like an exchange. So if i were u just give it a shot. I got lucky and got a China made MT4G with a superior screen! Dead Centered FFC. All i did is just ask.
My phone: Original. FFC is slightly off, there is a small cosmetic defect around the BFC bezel, and a -very- small chip in the front chrome near the FFC. Annoyed about it, but not enough to swap for a refurb when everything works -great- (S-OFF, rooted no problems, good screen, etc).
Wife's phone: 1st swap. Original one would -not- take S-OFF or root at ALL. It would even take the ENG HBOOT, but still be S-ON! Replacement has been great and went S-OFF easily like mine
We actually swapped my wife's via 611 even though we bought both phones in store. The store was completely useless in help with anything and will never receive my business again! Called 611, 'cancel' at autoprompt to get a retentions person. They suggested the store, we explained what horrible service we've had since they sold us the phones, he chuckled and said ok no problem new phone on the way.
I swapped out my original MT4G with a washed-out display for a replacement unit with a good display.

Focus over heating

No one has brought this issue up as far as I know but I am on my 2nd Focus and 2nd battery and having what i believe to be heat related lock ups.
I reformatted tried with fresh phone not even signed into a Live ID and I can duplicate this issue about 90% of the time. I make a phone call and stuff it in my shirt pocket with a jacket on. It will lock up with the Samsung Logo and be hot to the touch. A battery pull is needed to reset and the battery is extremely hot. When I reboot the battery life is drastically diminished.
I am not using an SD card and replicated the issue with or without apps. The only way I can keep it from locking up is on my hip in a case. I can only imagine how the summer will be if I am having the problems now in the winter.
ps I kept my Touch Pro 2 and currently My Moto Droid in my pocket without issue.
Bizarre. I've never experienced that issue before. My Focus usually stays pretty cold actually.
Maybe yours is defective? It's possible.
No issues with the phone getting hot, or even warm, for me.
2 phones and batteries. I thought I would just put it out there to see if others were having issues.
I've noticed my phone getting a little warm while playing Crackdown but it never got slow or locked up ever.
When I download many songs from Zune or play a long game it gets pretty warm but it has never been "to hot" to hold and never crashed.

I also had this problem, i just had this happen for the first time today. I was using my phone earlier in the day, all of a sudden I felt it getting warm in my pocket. After I pulled it out, it was stuck on the samsung logo and warm to the touch. Pulling the battery and resetting does nothing. I keeps booting to the Samsung logo and never proceeds further. I have even left it off for a few hours and attempted to power it up again: still no luck.
I am unable to hard reset the phone.
I called my local AT&T store before they closed, they agreed to replace it tomorrow :-\
I am having so much buyers remorse. I would have returned it but it happened on my 31st day. I went through 2 phones and batteries and I still get the problem. If I talk on the phone or surf the net and stick it in my pocket the phone is toast until I realize it and do a battery pull. If I wait too long the battery is pretty much drained.
I don't ever think I will buy a Samsung again. WM7 is lacking but I knew what I was getting into but from the memory card debacle and the Samsung Boot menu the phone is crap. Hell we can't even set it down flat on a surface and use the tough screen properly. Beautiful screen but all other hardware is crap.
I also noticed a pretty hot Samsung Focus in my pocket today. After turning off wireless search it got cold again.
I have experinced the heating up issue. It happens a few times a week. I kind of think it could potentially be dangerous because of the battery. Samsung should have a recall or fix for free.

If they start blowing up they might issue a recall, but until bodily injury (and getting sued for real bucks) is on the table it is probably cheaper for them to replace or fix them.
Samsung got a ton of bad press for the GPS woes in the Galaxy S line of phones and didn't do a thing about it.
The SD card thing is weird. MS could have revoked their Windows Phone 7 compatible seal of approval but didn't probably bc it was a launch device and didn't want to piss off Samsung. Rediculous.
MS and Intel went through the same thing with the 'Vista Certified' thing. They let big names do what they want because either way they are getting paid for the licences.
my focus got warm when playing Need 4 Speed Undercover from start to finish in 1 sitting lol but my Nexus One,Palm Pre,and iphone would get hot after playing for that amount of time too. It just depends on what u are doing and how long u are doing it imo.
I did make 1 hour call on my Focus and it doesnot seem overheating...
Alson runed the Harvest for harvest and it was fine...

HD2 killed itself

So this morning was casually playing bubble jump on WP7 and all of the sudden backlight went off on lcd and the camera flash started going rampant.
hardware buttons wont work and a distinct sizzling sound and a giant pop then came from it before it became completely inoperable.
i left it for a day and the screen turns on but no light and the battery is still amazingly working.
any ideas what the problem might be, I've sent it back now just curios on people's thoughts.
to not confuse anyone it poped again which then made the device inoperable, forgot to mention that *hits head*

its the HTC auto destruct sequence. It has detected that you have enough money saved up for a new phone, has reported this fact to HTC and they have sent the kill signal. You should start recieving phone ad emails from them any time soon.

i haven't a clue didnt think bubble jump was a demanding game, and i have a job, but ive used all my money on car insurance lol
If you can get to the bootloader (even if you can not see the screen) task 29 and reflash original Win 6.5 ROM. By doing that you can eliminate software and, if you have warranty or insurance, exercise that.
I could not possibly suggest that now is a time to get insurance and, having waited a significant time period, drop the HD2 from a great height.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App
hey, couldn't boot in to spl due to the pop, i think that ultimately killed the whole system as non of my spare batteries work nor does the charger, the insurance i have on it accepted it fine and have told me i should expect a replacement in about a week.
I am very pleased that you have insurance then and will not be without your beloved HD2.
If no charge is a secondary problem then an interesting test was whether or not you could access the bootloader whilst external power is applied - in this Maglr world I believe that you can trickle charge through that method. You probably did that which I think confirmed a major hardware problem (check battery terminal pins though).
I hope it arrives quickly for you.

well from what i could tell the pins were all still in tact and before the pop, the charger worked on it. seemed very odd why it would just do that, but I'm no electrician. thanks for the replys guys =)

Really Disappointed

I have recently bought a Desire Z and have to say I am hugely disappointed with it thus far. I am finding that the battery life is poor and more worryingly I am continually losing my network signal. I had an HD2 previously and had none of these problems. Just wondering if the way forward is to go down the rooting route, will this improve things. I am currently on stock rom/ radio on t-mobile UK.

Never had these problems since day one... if you got dz just recently, you should get it replaced, may be it is a defective piece of hardware which is why you are losing signals and battery won't last long enough. I never had a problem with dz/tm g2's battery or network signals even with stock rom. after i flashed different rom, battery time goes up and down but never seems to be bad.
Yeah I honestly have not had any problems with my G2. I love it. My only gripe is the loose hinge issue...I took mine apart and stretched the spring to help, but it's still a little loose. Never had any issues with connectivity or battery life.
If the only real problems are battery drain and signal loss, it could be an issue with the radio. You can certainly root it and flash a new radio to see if that helps alleviate the issues. If not then there are guides here on how to put it back to factory conditions, which I would do, and see if you can get it replaced.
Or just get it replaced first and see if the next one is any better. I haven't had any issues with mine. I got it in February of this year and this is by far the best phone I have ever owned. My fiance has an HD2 which is giving her nothing but problems (kinda the reverse of your situation).
Thanks for your replies. Wondering if there is a network issue, as my wife has an HTC Wildfire which is doing the same signal loss thing, don't know if the DZ and Wildfire have anything in common which would cause this problem? Just seems odd that we have both upgraded to HTC Android phones in the last 2weeks and both now have issues.

May be it is an issue with network? Sometimes I have strange issues with Rogers, it usually happens around same area and the same time of the day, each time it happens. I wouldn't be able to do anything with my phone during the period of time if I am in the area...
Speaking of HTC, they make a very nice piece of hardware, I have seen pictures of HTC phone saves a life of a person hit by a bullet... So far, this is my 3rd HTC phone, never am disappointed, may be you just having hardluck.

How do you hold you phone? The bottom half inch on the back of the phone is your antenna, and if I cover that with my hand while holding my phone my signal goes to ****. I have adapted and now hold it with my left hand thumb and index finger.

Also I have taken to putting the phone in my pocket with the screen facing my body. That way it has better signal, doesn't use battery searching for signal. Also, a good failsafe to protect your screen.
