HD2 killed itself - HD2 General

So this morning was casually playing bubble jump on WP7 and all of the sudden backlight went off on lcd and the camera flash started going rampant.
hardware buttons wont work and a distinct sizzling sound and a giant pop then came from it before it became completely inoperable.
i left it for a day and the screen turns on but no light and the battery is still amazingly working.
any ideas what the problem might be, I've sent it back now just curios on people's thoughts.
to not confuse anyone it poped again which then made the device inoperable, forgot to mention that *hits head*

suicide !! domestic violence !!

its the HTC auto destruct sequence. It has detected that you have enough money saved up for a new phone, has reported this fact to HTC and they have sent the kill signal. You should start recieving phone ad emails from them any time soon.

lol I would never hurt my beloved HD2 i love it too much.
and im broke i dont have enough money for a cup of tea now days lol

Maybe you were pushing the GPU aspect of the Snapdragon SOC too much.

i haven't a clue didnt think bubble jump was a demanding game, and i have a job, but ive used all my money on car insurance lol

If you can get to the bootloader (even if you can not see the screen) task 29 and reflash original Win 6.5 ROM. By doing that you can eliminate software and, if you have warranty or insurance, exercise that.
I could not possibly suggest that now is a time to get insurance and, having waited a significant time period, drop the HD2 from a great height.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App

hey, couldn't boot in to spl due to the pop, i think that ultimately killed the whole system as non of my spare batteries work nor does the charger, the insurance i have on it accepted it fine and have told me i should expect a replacement in about a week.

I am very pleased that you have insurance then and will not be without your beloved HD2.
If no charge is a secondary problem then an interesting test was whether or not you could access the bootloader whilst external power is applied - in this Maglr world I believe that you can trickle charge through that method. You probably did that which I think confirmed a major hardware problem (check battery terminal pins though).
I hope it arrives quickly for you.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App

well from what i could tell the pins were all still in tact and before the pop, the charger worked on it. seemed very odd why it would just do that, but I'm no electrician. thanks for the replys guys =)

So i sent my nexus in for repair

it arrived yesterday at htc repair and ive been watching the repair tracking site. i had some pixel problems, like a quarter of my screen was darkened grey.
Keep in mind my phones bootloader unlocked, rooted, haha and i sent it in as is running the latest miui. Why? idno.
Anyways. I just checked the repair site and it says:
Ticket Information
Status: We are repairing your phone.
Service Type: Repair
Issue Description: top screen is darker that the rest of the device
I havent approved to pay for any repairs for an out of warranty phone. So i guess im off the hook right? I think im about to prove that htc repair people dont give a F***!
THought id share..
Uhhh, we have known this for a year now. It has been proven time and time again that HTC will warranty repair hardware defects, despite an unlocked bootloader.
This is nothing new or surprising.
Did someone has problems with the multi-touch screen: lags, do not respond or random reactions ...even when having a call ?
the solution for now is to push "shutdown button" and it seems to reinitialize the sensors for the screen ... isn't it weird ? It occurs 40% of the time ...
The menu for reinitialize sensors/calibration do not exist (for HTC Legend/Hero you can re-calibrate the sensors).
Do you have same problems ?
I will send it for repair soon...
im having the same problem, ive had it for a long time now, ive gone threw 20 Roms. so i know its not software related, or is it something the devs are over looking??
weird thing ....do Googlers have same problem when demonstrating navigation/goggles/phone calls/voice recognitions .....or do we fall on bad series ???
definitely hardware problem or something no-one has been aware of ....?

Sometimes it's worse than others, I think if the phone is running something pretty intense it happens more often. Otherwise, no, there's no calibration. Calibration doesn't make sense on a capacitive screen.
The touch screen issues have been known since the beginning, and the solution of quickly turning the screen off and on has been known for just as long.
It's part of the hardware, and most if not all Nexus owners experience it once in a while.
Getting a warranty replacement for that will not fix anything, it is a flaw in the hardware design.
Good thing to know that...but really weird for such a device...they probably think about it when starting/choosing next nexus.... ;-)

I'm curious whether they'll return it with a relocked bootloader and stock ROM
i've noticed that the only time i have touchscreen response issues is when i use my N1 without a case on it and it seems to be because some of my fingers touch or get near the edges of the screen glass. i have a silicone slip on case and when its on the phone it prevents me from touching the glass accidentally at the edges and i never experience any response problems when its on the phone. just my 2c.

yeah that would annoy the crap outta me as well, glad mine does not exhibit this problem.
i'd love to guesstimate how old mine is but i'm the second owner, it might be possible that they fixed this hardware issue in later build revisions or it could just be a random problem with the touchscreen/module, some do it and some don't idk.

was it amoled or slcd though lol
i have to make the call when i get up. today my usb port was gone from the phone when i went to plug it in tonight. i never used to have the screen issue, it slowly started happening and now it happens all the time, i lay it flat in my hand and i hit a button on screen and my menu pops up etc.
nice to see a recent time frame though, i'm dreading going without my phone and having a dumbphone replacement. would love to know if it was amoled or slcd you got back though, thats my one worry

MT4G Turned Itself Off & Power Button Won't Work

Ok.. so this is the second time this has happened..
My phone was fully charged and for no apparent reason turned itself off. Then when I attempted to turn it back on, the power button would not do ANYTHING at all.. even after multiple presses (like 20).
I plugged the charger back into my phone, and the light wouldn't even come on indicating that it was connected to the charger.
Finally pulled the battery, put it back in, and viola - it powered up.
Then I was talking to my buddy and the same thing has happened to his MT4G. Except he never pulled that battery - but he said it took 15 minutes before the power button worked.
I think this is a BIG problem, because when I started searching the net for similar situations, I found one.. with the G2. Now that's TWO T-Mobile phones with the same problem.. Both made by HTC.. both with several Quality Control issues
Anyone else have this problem? I'm starting to think about going with a different phone now, which is crazy because I was absolutely in love with this phone... but I am not about to have a phone that decides to shut itself off and won't power up. Especially since my friend has the same problem which tells me this isn't something specific to my phone only which means potentially any device I get can have this issue.
I was deeply saddened to read the G2 has the same problem. What's going on HTC????!
Are you rooted? Overclocked? It really sounds like phone couldn't handle amount of OC (which happened to me several times). However, if it's a stock phone - hurry up and bring it back to T-mo and ask for replacement. This is not a common issue for these phones, first time I hear about it. Of course, there always will be cases of QC but, once again, this is not a common behavior.
I can say this has never happened to me so it sounds like an issue with your setup. Do you have anything modded ie overclocking is the one I'm thinking. Maybe pushing phone to hard.
Edit: sorry just realized I was in the general section.

No, I am not rooted. Stock running Launcher Pro Plus and Live Wallpaper.
After checking around, it appears this has been an issue for many G1, G2 and even a few Nexus Ones.
It appears the general consensus is that either the contact pins for the battery are not making firm contact when the battery shifts (supposedly on some phones the battery prongs not protruding enough, I have not checked mine yet but I intend to shortly)
I really don't want to return my phone.. my screen is the good one and my FFC is centered..
This happened to me just an hour ago. Only had the phone since friday and had this happen for the first time. Wouldn't respond at all. Everthing stock on phone.

Yeah, but what are the chances of getting one with the good screen, a centered FFC and no gaps in the metal bezel/side of the phone?
I'll wait it out and see what happens. There's always the warranty.
Same thing happened to mine. I took it back. It wouldn't charge and the power button didn't work.
I pulled the battery and it still wouldn't cut on or charge.
Phone was stock.
It magically came on by itself 5 minutes later without me touching it.

Evo refuses to turn on AT ALL

This has happened once before, but just for a small amount of time to to the heat (I believe). The phone has been off for over and hour and refuses to turn on whether I hold down the volume button, don't hold down the volume button, or push the battery in at the exact time as I'm doing the other one or two. The splash screen flashed for half a second and immediately went back off when I plugged my evo charger, the usb part, into my portable ipod charger, so I believe this means there is still help available! Last time this happened, which was months ago, it seemed as if it just needed to cool down a bit, and my reading on the internet confirmed that the phones shut off when their batteries reach too high of temperatures. So what I did was wrap the phone and the battery, separately, in a large wash cloth and let them sit it the fridge for a little while. No luck, I'm running out of ideas (and I realize a ziplock bag may have been better but who cares). A few days ago I installed cm7gginggerbread7 (wimax) over cm7gingerbread2, but have not had any issues up until now and everything has run perfectly as well as smoothly. Is there any way I can turn my brick into a phone? Perhaps there's a way to adb something even though the phone wont boot (im a noob). I'm just pissed cuz I finally got every little thing exactly the way I wanted it, and now I'm stuck with a paperweight :/ I thank you for all your help, brave knights
It just suddenly shut off and won't turn back on?
And you weren't messing with anything?
If so, sounds like it's a hardware or battery issue.
Can you try a different battery?
Does the charging light come on when you plug it in? It could be a dead battery, and if the charging port is broke, it wont charge.
Otherwise, it seems like a hardware issue. I would take it to sprint, and they should be able to replace it for you.

If they can't get it to power on then it really doesn't matter if it's rooted or not because they won't be able to find out.
Well I was messin with it a couple days ago, flashed gginggerbread6 w/ wimax over gginggerbread2 after wiping cache and dalvik and of course making a nandroid. I was thinking of smashing it but I've gotten everything they way I want it for the thousandth time. I'm also reluctant to do it because this issue has resolved itself in the past, albeit a tad quicker. For christ's sake, it even fixed itself for half a second this time, just enough to show me the splash screen lol. I'm very gentle with my evo and have never had any problems that weren't easily resolved with a little bit of work. I guess I could smash it until it works, and then if it ends up breaking then I win either way, but I'd really like to get my darling fixed. I know it's nothing compared to the cyanogenmod team, but I've flashed and flashed (almost always to cyanogenmod, what can I say it's perfect) and I have FINALLY got everything set up the way I wanted it, which includes manually going through and changing all the icons to custom pngs lol.
I guess I just don't understand why this would happen all of a sudden like this, I've onlu had it for three or four months, htc can't make that shotty of work can they? The other thing is I have a battery widget so as to make sure my battery does not get to hot, as well as having a setting in setcpu which stops overheating if it should ever occur. I really have a feeling it's something which can be fixed just because it has been magically fixed in the past and it was "fixed" for half a second today. Is there any way to adb into recovery even though the screen is black? Any suggestions help, I have important calls coming in as well as rather important calls to (hopefully) future employers. Of course I also don't want people to think that I am ignoring them, which isn't quite as bad but I still try to be as rude as possible :/
So...any ideas guys Don't wanna sound like I'm fishing for compliments, but you all are by far the best in the field. Keep up the good work (on my phone haha) Thanks so much for the advice you're going to give me on how to fix this up so I don't miss all my friends calls and texts until I get pissed off at. Later trooper
EDIT: Sry got block of text. tl/dr fix my evo that wont turn on asap thx

If this occurred while you were NOT changing anything with the radio partition or recovery partition then it's not a brick issue.
Sounds like you have a hardware issue.
Take it to the store.
If you smash it you will be paying $100 to asurion for a replacement as Sprint changed the TEP again.
Just wondering was your battery completely dead before this happened. I have read some people here and other places have said that if the battery completely dies that it won't charge unless you put it on a actual battery charger made for it. Does the charge light come on when you plug it in? Also, like my friend before me said, take it to Sprint. Ask them if they have a battery you could try. If it doesn't work it will eliminate the battery being the issue. If it won't boot they will replace it. They won't be able to tell if it is rooted because it won't boot. If you were flashing a radio and didn't let it finish or the battery died during the process, you are bricked.
Does the charge light flash when plugged in?

the same exact thing happened to me. i read in another post that the TP2 battery was a suitable replacement, so i checked the VDC and mA and they were exact and also the contacts were in the right place. (looks exactly like the evo batt just black instead of red in retrospect). It was a good call on the TP2 battery. My evos batt died on me tonight while it was charging. no light while plugged into OEM wall charger, no blinking, nothin, I wasnt even using it, never had a problem before. luckly i was just chargin up my old TP2 to give to my girlfriend. popped in that battery and the evo came right up. popped the evo battery in my TP2 and it appears to be charging. curiously the evo appears to be charging the tp2 batt now aswell. so i dont know what happened... one positive thing is that i know i have 2 batteries now. a negative is that my gf cant have my TP2 untill i get this sorted.
anyone have any insight as to what is goin on? or why this happened? if my charging port has gone bad why is the tp2 batt charging in the evo? and if the evo battery went bad why is it charging in the TP2?
i am using the stock sprint evo rom. not scared to root, just havent yet.

Take the original battery to sprint. Tell them the story and get a replacement, ask for some free accessory since you've helped them isolate a reliability issue.
LOL
There are two known issues with the Evo to be aware of. The first is the charging bug. If the Evo shuts off due to low battery level there is the possibility that the charging circuit fails to recognize the dead battery as even being there and will not charge. The workaround is to charge the dead battery in another compatible phone or use an external battery charger. This is supposed to be fixed in the next update but we'll see.
The second is the thermal sensor bug. The thermal cut off starts to trigger at lower and lower temps til even freezing the phone won't work. I thought the local service center was joking til I actually saw it reproduced. This is a hardware issue and the only fix is a replacement phone.
The first issue is intermittent but knowledgeable service centers are aware of this and will either charge the dead battery or swap out with a charged one.
The second issue is reproducible but can take some time to do so depending on how far off the sensor is. Again, knowledgeable service centers are aware of this and will want to reproduce it before ordering a replacement.
Not sure what technical thong is happening, but I do know I panicked when it happened to me, bit it turns out if you try to charge EVO from a USB port while its in the recovery mode it will eventually drain and **** off. I forgot I was on recovery mode and came back to what you described. After doing the swap with my GF's EVO and realizing my battery was fine, I remembered how I had left the phone in the first place and Googled it to confirm that will cause the dead EVO scare.
Sent from a corrective lens wearing eskimo translating Turkish smoke signals viewed over a streaming webcam at 640x480 resolution via a U.S. Robotics 14.4 Hayes compatible modem.
This has happened to me twice, but since I was on the extended battery from sprint, I would just pop my stock battery in and it powered up fine. Each time I just brought my battery in to sprint and they replaced it. Also, when it happened to me the charging light wasn't turning on or anything.

OK friends, same thing happening here to me today.
Here's my story: Last night, working fine, running stock turbo rom and netarchy cfs-havs-sbc-4.3.4 kernel for about a month, working great.
Used Kernel manager and flashed to cfs-suv-nohavs-nosbc and it was working great. Figured I didnt need the extra batter life/damage risk anymore. Went to sleep, phone on my bed.
Wake up today, phone is fully unresponsive. Take the battery out, put it back in, unresponsive. nothing whatsoever when holding down power, volume, etc.
When I plug it in, the orange battery led comes on and off.

Blinking charge light means that the battery v has dropped below the required v to turn on the phone. I see 4-5 Evo's a day like this as well as the charge bug.
I actually got it booting again somehow. Now, it consistently turns on, will boot to the bootloader, but recovery doesnt work and it wont boot into the phone. It does search for pc36 image though... i might try that.
I just sit here and shake my head on a daily basis when I see people talk about problems and inevitably, and I'm not saying this is applicable in this case, but they say in their post they were using ROM or Kernel Manager.....

Does the computer recognize it?
Sent from my HTC Glacier Sense 3.0 using xda premium
If you're talking about no power at all, it doesn't sound like a software issue. It sounds like an electrical issue.
If the screen backlight comes on when you hit the power button, then it could be software or electronic (borked chip, broken circuit board, etc)
Plugging it in, even if it's a dead phone, should still charge the battery if the electrical circuits are good. The LED will come on at orange or green and that should tell you if there is physically electricity running through the circuits.
If you get nothing, something in the phone died. I'm starting to realize the MT4G has a pretty poor build quality.
If the battery is charging and the backlight comes out, maybe a quick vibrate to indicate charging, then you could have some kind of an electrical short in the circuitry somewhere.
Or you just have a bad power button. That's a possibly. But that's odd that it turned itself off. That's what makes me think the power button itself isn't what's wrong.
In all cases it sounds dead. If you can't get to the recovery screen there's not much you can do.

no led lights it just died lol... it wont do a thing. im starting to think that it has some kind of short between the battery and the circuit that distributes power through out the phone.. thats my best guess.thanks
You can also check to make sure the battery isn't the problem by removing it and plugging the phone in. Again, the best you'll get is a brief flash of the backlight. But if you don't get that, you can be sure the battery itself isn't the problem.
Or just put a new battery in and see if that works.
This is highly unlikely to be the cause. But it's all about narrowing the possibilities. I've been fiddling with electronics for 20 years now. One thing I'm sure of is that you should never discount the really unlikely source of a problem. It won't usually be the answer, but every once in a while something you'd just never suspect ends up being the culprit.
I had the exact same issue, earlier this year. Your emmc chip gave you the bird. Go into Tmobile store, tell then your phone won't turn on, you tried the normal tricks, but nothing works. Act a little dumb with them,I did that an got a new one under warranty for $5, came in the mail the days later. DO NOT MENTION ANYTHING BOUT YOUR PHONE BEING ROOTED. If you do, your gonna have to pay full price for a new one or though the issuance company a $130(or whatever your deductible is).
Trust me on this, it works. I'm still using the phone they sent to me back in June.
If I helped, give thanks(via the button )
From my fist to your face, enjoy!

Is the HD2 crap?

Hi,
So I bought my second HD2 in 2 months on ebay because I wanted a phone that you I can "do stuff" with.
The first one was a piece of **** that only turned on when I put it in the freezer and the flash memory was damaged I guess. Alright, my bad, the seller said that it was broken but only the software...
I got another one that was sold as in perfekt condition for christmas and after 1 day of playing and flashing around the volume down button went berserk. Now it is turned on constantly which means I get into the bootloader all the time and even if I manage to boot WP, I get the volume screen at 99% of the time.
Am I unlucky or is the HTC HD2 simply a crappy phone that likes to brake down?
Can you guys help me with the volume down thing? I bet it is hardware related but I like the way the phone looks and feels a lot
LOL @ "The first one was a piece of **** that only turned on" way to funny.
Now 433Mhz the HD2 (taking US-HD2 aka Leo1024) is NOT a POS phone even now. Taking it that it was the most powerful phone in market when it came out. You have to understand HD2-EU been out since 2009Q3 and HD2-US been out since 2010Q1. Taking it as its almost 2012 where lifespan of a phone is close 9-12months. I am sure the POS you bought was faulty thats why the Seller sold it. If I still had my HD2 I would still keep it now until Edge or now upgrade it to Amaze.
I'm not sayin that the phone hardware is crap, but it seems to be very fragile. I never had issues with cell phones are smartphones before. Had a Touch Diamond for 2 years, a Nokia 5800 and a Samsung S8500 before.
Maybe my cleaning efforts have damaged the volume button. That thing smelled like a billion cigarettes and I put on a little too much cleaning vinegar.
I guess, I'll open both phones tomorrow. I am pretty sure the vol down is just wet or dirty and the motherboard of the first HD2 will get the hot air treatment:

Pretty sure, the mainboard won't survive but at least I can replace the flex board which contains the volume "buttons" on the second phone.
My HD2 works just perfect. After WinMo 6.5 and Android I'm now running it using WP7.5. Hardware is doing quite well and it's not fragile at all. I droped it several times (by accident of course) - I think 6 or 7 times in two years - and nothing happend.
Well mabe your cleaning was really a little bit to intense... so... never clean a running system ;-)
If you buy cheap phone on ebay that's what u get and u should pay attention very well to the listing details before u buy and ask the seller. But htc hd 2 is very powerful phone and I dropped mine and still working prefect also some times the roms doesn't work well with some phones for other reasons I still don't know.try as much roms as u can till u get the right one to it

NOPE... just bad luck
It's not a crappy phone, you're just unlucky i think. I've had mine for almost 2 years and it still works perfectly fine. But i sometimes wish i had the t-mobile one. EU doesnt have enough space for sense roms.
Horrible phone! Constantly freezes when receiving text messages, freezes at random times. Makes random calls. Constantly losing 3G. Freezes when I try to unlock the screen.I have had to remove the battery maybe 100 times in the past month. At multiple times it has completely shut down and wouldnt come back on when fully charged.
actually my brother has this phone....but i used it for a month. And my experience was terrible with this phone.Never recommend to anyone!

sounds like ur gettin the old winmo bugs...
try flashing android nand on it... android and hd2 work so well together... i rarely have problems... if ur not after a switch to android id suggest a custom winmo rom... energyrom was my rom of choice...
have mine for over two years now, dropped few times, using original latest eu rom, perfect phone. I love it so much "reason is to do stuff... ), so not switching to newer models with wp7. But today few nokia WP7 phones are comming to my company, so I may switch if these are cool
I have had my HD2 since it was out (2009) and till now... its working perfectly no problems at all =)
Using it over a year, start from wm6.5 then sd android, wp7 and now stick arround with nandroid. This multiOS kind device that makes me last long play with it, i eager to upgrade to latest new phone, but i'll miss a lot of interest and challenging thing then. I only had several awful color stripped on screen, restart phone will cure it and recently i lost sounds, maybe it caused while i drown in the river with my bike while HD2 was on my pocket. I disasemble and clean speaker contact and now my HD2 was rocks just like it does a year ago..

I use my HD2 nearly two years without hardware problems. I dropped it more than once and no damage. Each key still works.
How good it is depends on the ROM you use.
My hd2 went broke after 10 months first the micro USB didn't worked anymore and few days later the back and the answer phone button failed.

The HTC HD2 isn't crap, the amount of "things" you can do on it is just endless, how many phones do you know that has lived for 2/3 or more years is being developed endlessly......
