addressing hinge issue - G2 and Desire Z General

so after running around 7 stores and making 18 different calls to t-mobile, htc and radio shack, they all came with the same conclusion: htc told them that the loosey goosey hinge is not a defect, it is the way its supposed to be so that the phone can be opened with ease. all i could do was laugh because i knew t-mobile was full of ****. as pissed off as i was, i remembered "you get what u pay for". since i only have two days left on my buyers remorse from radio shack (149.99 price tag), i'm going to return the phone tomorrow, cancel the plan and go over to costco and buy it for $50 dollars. no need dealing with this for $150 when i can b dealing with it for $100 less i gotta say i still love this damn phone though

It's not an issue for me since I don't hold my phone upside down in a weird way.

I did the same, I visit 2 tmo stores, and they test 3 new boxes, and is not a problem, the phone came like this...

Be careful doing that. There was a post earlier about canceling and not being able to go to costco for the cheaper phone.

and who in the f*ck will tell me i can shop around since t-mobile stores blows enough * explicit* in order not to price match. i havent seen any legal documents stating that i cant do what is legal and fair. why pay 250 (mail-in-rebate) when u can pay $50. its ridiculous not to

Tmobile can reject you order for service since you canceled. They can make you wait alonger time before they allow yiu service. Its maily the system tho

Stupid corporates. I hope they dont.

I had my first G2 on pre order and received it from the very first batch, sent it back due to shutting itself off for no reason. They sent me a 2nd phone with a hinge so loose it was ridiculous In my opinion. I called and sent that one back as well. I talked with someone about this issue and said that if I could not receive a G2 with a tite hinge then cancel my order. He told me he was sending me a phone from the latest batch from htc that they had addressed this loose hinge problem and my new G2 should be perfect. Time will tell. I refuse to buy a phone with a loose hinge that will only get worse not better. Owning the Nexus One with no slide out keyboard I do not miss the G2. IMO there is no device that feels like the Nexus One in your hand. I should receive my new G2 in a few days and will let the forum know how this hinge problem worked out. I probably would have not returned my 2nd phone but my 1st phone the hinge was very tite and I know how it should feel. Not being fussy but just want a good phone.

how tight was the hinge on your first g2? were you able to turn the phone face down and have the top part of the screen not fall?

@vinnyjr: Could you please let us know how it works out when you get your new phone? I'm thinking of calling and asking for a G2 from the "new batch" if it really fixes the hinge issue.

honestly guys t-mobile just says sh*t to shut us up. like i said after numerous calls to different reps, they said its the way it should be. ell they even tell t-mobile stores and radio shack employers the same silly sh*t. they are honestly trying to push this issue aside to avoid numerous recalls.
btw i returned my g2 back to radio shack and just got a g2 for 50 bucks at costco so now my 14 day period just started over and im gonna go in the store every other day till i get a g2 with stiff hinge gotta love freedom of choice

I got my G2 September 30th. I'd say that it is "first batch" if there is such a thing. My hinge is tight. I have to really shake my phone hard while holding it upside down to get the phone to swing open.
My buddy just got his G2 2 days ago from a T-Mobile corporate store, and his hinge is very loose.
So from my very limited experience, I doesn't seem like there are "new batch" phones with better hinges.

I just received my fourth G2 from T Mobile yesterday. The first three all had very loose hinges and wildly fluctuating signals or no signals. The trio also had screen freezes, random reboots and turned them selves off from time to time, as well as dropped calls.. The one I received yesterday has very tight hinges and seems to stay connected to H or E much better. So far the only issue has been a dropped call. This last phone just seems smoother and faster and the keyboard does not come out in my pocket as the first three did, I dont know if this is a new batch or not but it definitely operates and has a much better feel and signal retention.

Could someone post a video of their strong hinge? Just to put things in perspective?
Thanks,

Trust me on this one. If you cancel your account then go to Costco; not a problem. T-Mobile may blow smoke because of system issues but in the end they're hemorraging customers so they can credit your account for up to 1/2 the price difference to keep the number of compelled accounts down. Don't believe ' Dateline', you don't wanna talk to a supervisor [you'll first go to a supervisor assistant called a "Senior Rep"...they're hourly also]. Ask for a manager!!! They're the real supervisor's SUPERVISOR! Those lazy a$$holes are not allowed to turn down your call and they hate taking calls so they are overly accommodating. Just be sure not to call on a weekend. There's only one on duty.

are you referring to their infamous "pro-rated charges"?

Find the Best shop
There are many shops selling duplicate products same as original you cant find the difference because duplicate seems like a xerox copy of original those products are mingled with original and sold over the shops. I think you may experienced such a product. I too had a T-Mobile few weeks back from onlinemobileworld.blogspot.com they are good and they got good collection as it is sold through online the price seem to be better. My suggestion is find the best online shops and compare the best price. I suggest for online shopping because online shopping is cheaper compare to retailer

I bought G2 2 hours ago. Hinge is really loose. I asked the rep that I wanna have the latest batch. I dunno he really did it.
Is there any way to know production date from serial #?
it's totally unfair some got not loose one for the same price.

[Q] Warranty Exchange w/ T-Mobile

So I had to go through warranty exchange with Customer Care since my volume rocker and bezel are loosening. I am past the 14-day exchange window so the stores will not do anything for me. One thing I was insistent on is that I did not want a refurbished unit (the device is less than 30-days old, why should I accept a refurbished unit?). The customer care associate was pretty insistent himself in telling me that he cannot request a new unit for me, however it is a "great possibility" that I would receive a new unit due to the phone being pretty new. I reluctantly agreed to have the replacement shipped to me, since they refused to let me do an in-store exchange.
Has anyone gone through this with their Vibrant? I'm looking to find people who have received warranty replacements from Customer Care, if anyone has gotten a new or a refurbed unit. Bottom line, I will not accept a refurbished unit. I figured worse comes to worse, I will send the refurbed one back and continue to ***** with them over the phone.
I'm flipping pissed too, because it was just so unnoticeable during the first 14-days, and then it inherently got worse with normal use. So now I'm feeling stuck. I do not know if the rep was telling me it will "likely" be a new unit just to get me to stop complaining, or if it's really true.
I'm with you - I wouldn't accept a refurbished unit either. However, since you are out of your 14-days (I assume you don't live in California) I don't think there is much you can do.
How long have you been a T-Mobile customer? The best bet to have issues resolved is always contact retention department. Not only are the employees there more knowledgeable, but based on your tenure with T-Mo, they often will do things for you other reps won't.
How far out of 14 days are you? I would take your box and everything back to the store you got it at and talk to the manager. Just be super nice about it and ask them to see if they can exchange it for you. Sometimes they can make exceptions, I know at my store we do.
I have exchanged phones in the past that were referbs and they come in pristine condition. They are practically brand new and have zero blemishes.
Don't worry about it.
Question though...
What do you mean the bezel is coming loose. I noticed that on the left side of the phone the bezel does not seem to be on correctly like the right side it might just be my eyes though. I hear a lot of squeaking from it though kinda annoying.
My volume button was loose out of the box feels cheap as hell when pressing it but it does not really bother me too much.

Mine is perfect. I am quite impressed with the build quality and iPhone4 fanatics who have looked at it have been impressed with it. Their quality control may be poor, but when you get a good one, its terrific.

The phone was purchased on launch day, so tomorrow will mark 30-days.
Unfortunately, I already tried returning my phone to the store. They wouldn't take it. They offered to call customer care to send me a refurb, which I declined. Worst part is, I can't try again because I am out of the area where it was purchased (we are on a family plan, the account holder is in Georgia, I'm in New Jersey, and I was on vacation there when we attempted the exchange this past week.) I do have the receipt though and can try at a different store, but I doubt a different store will want to inherit my problem.

We've had T-Mobile since 2002 or 2003, whatever year they first took over Voicestream. If this replacement is a refurb, I will be contacting the retention department.

Yes, that is what is happening to mine, and it's a defect. The bezel is loose and creaks when held. Also, the volume rocker rattles around in the phone.
I've played with the store display units, as well as another Vibrant we had purchased on our family account, and it has none of these issues. They are solidly built. So it's obvious that some of batches weren't properly assembled.
At my T-Mobile location my rep was having problems with her Vibrant and decided to try to tough it out. She did some master resets and didn't exchange within 14 days. She received a refurb from T-Mo.
As a manager I've gotten to the point where refurbs no longer bother me. Most of the time the refurbs come back in excellent condition, especially now that we're doing the certified open box program where people can buy COB phones.
Honestly if you put a refurb and a new vibrant side by side you couldn't tell the difference. If they hadn't said anything you wouldn't have known. Besides it comes with the same 1 year manufactures warranty so its still covered.
Did you purchase the phone at full price or as a subsidy? If at full price you have 30 days to exchange at store.

As a subsidy.
I know refurbs are supposed to be just as good or even better, but I've never had any luck with anything refurbished. Anything with a screen has always had hairline scratches. Either that or it's very obviously been used with lots of normal wear and tear and marks/scuffs.

It doesn't bother me too much I would have just perfected a more solid feeling phone.
Besides they charge you $10 to ship it out to you.
I would much rather save those 10 bucks and if the phone has some real issues I will return it. I also don't want to go through the headache of finding all my apps and redownloading them and getting my phone back to the way it previously was. Meh. I will stick with a few creaks here and there.
If you do however decide on doing this please tell us your experience with the referb phone. I am interested.
You whine too much. Who cares what it is. As long as you get a device that is new or refurbed, you won't even be able to tell the difference. Just enjoy your phone. And also, customer retention won't do anything as far as your problem.

Sorry, but I don't think I'm being unreasonable in requesting a new 500 dollar item when the one I just purchased was defective. Sure, 6 months down the line, something happens, give me a refurb. That's reasonable because the value of your purchase declines with time and with your own use. 30 days old is brand spanking new, and I should get the same if something is wrong with it.
I have one getting delivered to me today. I've been with T-mobile for close to ten years and they overnight shipped it for free to me. Mine is having an issue when charging where the usb cord is very loose. They rep said I would get a new or like new item but I will also be returning it if it not new. My phone is only 20 days old and I don't trust refurbished units enough when mine is only 20 days old. The loose card is making it so if the phone is not in the right position it won't charge

Your window for a new replacement is 14 days.
I just got a replacement unit from T-Mobile and frankly I have no idea how to tell whether it is new or refurbished. Is there a way to tell? I really don't care if it is refurbished as long as it looks like new and works properly (aside from GPS and compass of course), but I am really curious how you guys are able to tell whether the replacement unit you got is new or not.

Am I screwed?

just bought a G2 from someone on craigslist
open the box and discovered the device has the infamous hinges AND reception problem!!!!!

I don't think Tmo will be sending you a replacement since you got it through CL. I'd suggest calling up HTC directly and seeing if they can help you.
I've come to believe there is no hinge issue. Yes, I've been brainwashed.
I doubt tmo is going to replace a phone bought from cl, this is a risk you take when buying this way. The hinges on mine do the "auto open/close" thing too but in the month I have had it it has not been an issue. The hinge itself is strong just not spring loaded.... non issue.
Spotty service you can do 1 kof 2 things, 1 temp root and do the manup themed rom I found it more stable or 2 do the ota update I did both and the update is better for service....

I am on my second G2.. and I can confirm that this second has a much crappier hinge. The hinge on my first phone would spring open or closed. This new one doesnt snap into place like the first one. I will be sending mine back. Not sure if I am going to get a new G2 or a mytouch.
I bought a motorola cliq on craigslist 2 months after the person had purchased it. But it still had the 1 year manufacture warranty from first purchase date. I dont know if the border will be an issue but the purchase will not be an issue. They have the record from the IMEI number.

You should try getting the mannual update link on this forum. I did it yesterday, and since, I have not had any reboots, nor freezing that require battery pull. Signal strength is much better, being that I barely get signal at my desk, and now I can actually hold a conversation. Also, battery life seems to have improved a bit...where I was getting maybe 40% by Noon, it's 4:00 PM as I am writting this and I have 32% left.....

I just purchased the thin plastic rubberized cover for the phone (I think you have the same one) bcs the OEM T-Mo gel is very heavy...I think that had something to do with making the hinge problem worst.
It's really not a non-issue, except for the fact that I paid $250 for this phone plus hipping and taxes and I really find the hinge to be a POS...and not really acceptable at those prices. Now with that said, It really annoys me when I walk I can actually hear the phone "slapping" as I take strides....that really gets under my skin!!!
T-Mo will not stand by the product as defective, that pisses me off even more...they know that they sold a defective product and now are calling it a design feature.... I wonder what would have happened if Toyota said that about their break issue.....lol!

Couldn't have said this better, kudos to you, man the hinges are defective! Seriously I can't believe the people who agree that its a feature lmao, yea let toyota said the break issue was a feature too, only imagine... lmaoooo. But its just a phone who cares right let people pay their money and that's it, yea iight I want this hinge issue solve by htc or tmo I'm sending it back htc so they can put stronger magnets on the device. In case y'all didn't know someone found weak magnets on the G2 with a paper clip I think on the sides of the keyboard I read this on a tmo forum like three people found the magnets. Well I guess ima send their piece if ****ty hinge G2 for a fix and they better put stronger magnets
Tmo has been a total disappointment on this device for me. Can't believe they're trying to be like apple with the iphone 4 as they refused to admit it was a design defect/flaw and the phone just wasn't been hold the right way lmaoooo. Things like mass production of defective device can happen guys just because the majority of G2 got this problem doesn't mean it was ment to be like this. Look at toyota, do you think the break issue was a feature?
That's cool that's a lovely feature a car that has a not always functional break, yea and they targeted for crazy people if a normal people buys it and they don't like our new feature they can return their car. Its the spontanious break feature, your breaks may not work at times and at times it will, enjoy our new feature it is targeted for people who love to die

No kidding.....I sent back my first phone for two reasons....the hinge was absolutely loose, and multiple freezes a day, with at least one batt pull a day!
They sent me a second phone....I really tried to deal with the issues, but I called (Day 14th), they told me that my Buyers remorse period had already ended, that there was nothing they could do about the hinges nor the reboots!!!! I received my phone on Oct 15th, on the 29th I called to have it replaced. They told me that the 14th day had been the 28th, bcs they count the delivery date as the first day....I pretty much lost it at that point and told the gal that she was full $#it!!!! I told her that it was like saying that the day a bay is born, they are already a day old!!!!
I am certainly beginning to doubt TMO claim for #1 on customer service....I seem to the same lame service I had with ATT when I left them 10Yrs ago!...i guess not sucking like ATT is the new definition of great cust serv....shish!!!

Wow how does the delivery day count as day one SMFH you still was on your remorse period is just been 14 days since you got the device they are so full of it, if this was to happen to me all I would've lost it even worst than you did
All I can say is
1.they really messed up badly on this device: hinges are crap, nothing they can do about that for those who already have the crappy hinges but exchange for crappier or better hinges
2. They're trying to cover their **** up by brainwashing people to believe the hinges are built that way, I feel bad for those who were brainwashed.
3. Tmo badly fail to explain the storage to people before they realese the phone. It does have a 4gb internal mem but the thing is due to froyo the memory has a limit for downloading apps, mytouch 4g and galaxy s phones are also showing the 1.15 gb available mem even tho they obviously come with much more. Damn was that really hard to explain before the device launch! But they better learn from this.
4. This phone probably has the most exchanges and returns in tmo history. And the saddest part is that is only due to the hinges, for the most part and for the storage, some people were very angry at this I could tell from visiting numerous forums regarding the storage. I really didn't care much for storage tho I knew there mustve been an explanation for this and there was, some one took the device apart and found the mem to be a 4gb.
5. Could've they avoid this? Yes maybe if they explain storage, and made sure device was better built on hinges they wouldn't be experiencing these issues. Some even found magnets on the device on the sides of the keyboard, this means that they used the wrong magnets.

I think this hinge issue is crazy, I mean yea what a great feature so it was basically made so it opens easily LOL I makes me imagine tmo making cars and me buying a car that has loose doors that would open on a turn lmao, and the excuse for that would be: this is a brand new feature that will allow you to open your car door easier than ever, no need to sturggle opening your door just barely pull the handle and it'll smoothly open lmfao, I only laugh at the people who believe tmo on this. That's a lovely feature

To everybody including PandaBanana I agree there's a hinge issue. Except in my case probably not that serious. I don't hold my phone upside down and when I do to show people the problem it barely hangs down as much as other people. Its unfortunate but I would rather this then the phone be even more bulkier if they would've went with a regular slider mechanism. Especially since I was an original iphone user I can say I'm mostly satisfied. Battery and the android keyboard is my only concerns. I like the hacker friendliness with the OS and I must say besides the hinges which is not bad on mine I'm really satisfied with the build quality. If anybody doesn't believe me about the hinge problems I can take pics and show y'all.

You mean you hinges are tight and they don't pop open when they're held upsidedown?....
Lucky Guy...........
Regarding the spring thing. Is there really some visible spring in sight?
Total Fail.
While the G2 is snappy and fun to play with, it's a piece of crap. The amount of problems that people are having with hardware and software is just ridiculous.
If you're thinking of upgrading to the G2, don't so it!
I went back to my Nexus One and couldn't be happier.
Screw you TMobile and your weak-hinged, missing-memory, daily-crashing, dead-pixel piece of crap phone!
I think it's HTC, it's not all T-Mobile's fault. After all this phone is marketed as the desire z in europe. What a shame this phone is in my opinion. I will be selling it soon. Such a great build quality: brushed aluminum with silicon coated plastic, but with loose, wobbly hinges. I find using the hardware keyboard too uncomfortable for daily use because of the hinges. I'll continue my wait for the perfect android phone. Or perhaps if the iphone does come to t mobile, I'll settle for it.

LOL too bad you got a dud but the truth the G2 is a successful phone and another win for HTC. What are you basing this speculation on? I doubt very much that the return rate is above what to be expected for a new smart phone. Here's advice for androidfeen809 - get an iPhone - no hinge problem!

9th exchange, at the very least.

Hello everyone,
I need some advice or suggestions on what to do. The Mytouch 4g, as you all may know, has a lot of problems. I've done many exchanges now, and some of them were done back to back. The first few times, TMO was able to ship express for free, but now they are charging me $9.99 for regular ground shipping even though the phones that I receive are defective. I am very frustrated at this point and have been thinking about canceling all 4 of my lines with them and eating the $800 ETF. What do you guys think I should do?
You may be wondering why I have to exchange it so many times..
Unlike the fellow perfectionists that you guys are, I never exchanged a phone that had a bad screen or squeaking buttons. The first time I exchanged it was because it had two dead pixels, then the power button would no longer work, then there was a ton of dust under the screen to the point where I had trouble seeing the top left corner where my status/notification bar is, then I had wifi and reception problems, then I've had the phone either shut off or reboot on its own.
I've been running into many, many problems - and they are not always the same problem either. After the third phone, all they have been doing is sending out refurbished units that are 'pre-damaged' by the previous user. On top of that, I have to pay for shipping on each phone, plus the Zagg's invisible shield (it's about $23 with labor on installation) that I had on several of the replacement phones. After troubleshooting for hours on end with tech support, I noticed that my battery cover is loose since they had me reboot/remove battery so many times, I ended up buying the gel skin case from TMO yesterday so that the battery cover wouldn't fall off.
I would be glad to take any advice that you guys have at this point. Thank you.
Edit: By the way, I did not have any apps other than opera mini - didn't even update youtube and things like that.
The statistical likelihood of getting 9 defective devices in a row is astronomical. Truly. If you are being honest and these are all really manufacturing defects then you sir are the unluckiest ****er ever and you are never welcome to babysit my kids. I don't really have any advice except to say that if your next problem is software related, try rooting and see if that fixes it. Otherwise I would avoid crosswalks and commercial flight if at all possible. Damn dude. Unlucky...

They can offer to give you a different phone all together. Like the g2 or galaxy 4g. Just ask
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Do this. Call tmobile and tell them the issue with your device. Have them do another warranty exchage, but, instead of getting it shipped, tell them that you really do not want to wait once more to receive another device shipped and that if you can go into a tmo store and pick up a warranty replacement. They shouldn't have a problem telling you yes. Have them call the store so they can tell them you will be going in to get a warranty replacement. This way for sure you wont get a refurbished device. You will be getting a brand new one out of the box. This is the way I did my warranty exchage. They even gave me an extra battery for free.

I agree with coupetastic-droid and also after your 5th replacement you should get a different phone if u want for ur replacement. Try for a g2 or even a g2x!

TJ you crack me up. I actually went through this guys episode with a mytouch slide, 5 phones under warranty, but they never charged me a dime for shipping. The one and only issue i had with the Mytouch slide was dust under the screen. I can't remember if it was the 3rd or the 4th replacement i got in the mail, but that one came with dust in all four corners. Didn't even insert a SIM card in that phone just took it down to my local Tmobile store and the manager exchanged it for me. After the 5th replacement with dust i decided to sell it and replace it with a MT4G. Well it was all good for a week until my power button failed to work, 1st exchange. They made me pay the 9.99 shipping for that one. Receive the new phone and i notice the display sucks compared to my wife's MT4G. Instead of calling in to tmobile i drive down to the local Tmobile store and i show the manager my predicament ( mind you this is the same guy that was exchanging my Mytouch Slide). Nice guy orders me another MT4G, waived the shipping. 3rd phone arrives a few days later, display is washed out, but i decide to live with it. Figuring that if i exchange it again I'll get another one with the crappy display. F**K me if the power button doesn't work after two weeks. I go back to the Tmobile store and have another chat with the manager, orders me another MT4G and waives the shipping. Manager tells me, "You're the unluckiest man i've seen with a phone", and i said "yes, yes, I am." Last exchange was the charm, good screen, and the power button actually works. I honestly thought i was the only poor bastard that could be this unlucky with phones. I have to show my wife this post, so she doesn't think i'm the unluckiest man alive. You sir have just made my day. If you can i'd go to a local tmobile store and see what they can do for you. Best of luck.

First of all, nice 'Lude. I just picked up an 07 Civic Si Sedan on Saturday and I ****ing LOVE it!
2nd, are you running stock Sense or rooted? To be perfectly honest I've found the stock Sense to be much more buggy than the cm7 I've been running for the past 3 or 4 months.
My first phone had random reboots and such and a factory reset seemed to solve the issue, but I'm assuming they had you do that multiple times.
Even if the phone is fresh out of the box, do a factory reset before you use it. It might help, it did for me.
Otherwise check out cm7 or one of the Sense roms around here. Removing all the bloatware actually does wonders for stability. If you really want I can upload a nandroid of my own stock rom with the bloatware removed.
On my 3rd mt4g and I'm about ready to go back to iPhone most androids have to many hardware issues.

First of all, yeah.. my Lude is old news. Since then, I've switched to an S2k, but that got stolen. Now I'm in an 06 Evo.
Anyway, back on topic..
The phone is completely stock. This is the FIRST PHONE I've ever owned that I have kept stock - Why? Because I don't want to have to unroot it when I send it in for warranty repairs.

Unrooting is as simple as flashing pd15img.zip through hboot. Not that hard.
Definitely try a different rom. As I said I've found cm7 to be much more stable than stock.

i got pretty bad luck with my phone. finally got a good one after like 9 exchanges and a month later the power button went out. i called them and they told me i couldnt exchange anymore cause i "had too many problems with the phone." so the rep told me that the only thing they could do left is to exchange my phone for a motorola charm.....i was like wtf why the heck would i want to downgrade my phone, which polly cost more then that piece of **** charm and it doesnt even run android...major downgrade.
Dude. That blows. Hard. I'm sorry to see that you're having so many problems with your phone and I'm glad I don't have the same luck as you. I got mine from eBay and it came in perfect condition. Never had dust under the screen, good screen, no faulty hardware, etc.
But in all seriousness, after 5 phones, I wouldn't keep it. I personally think that it's a great phone, but if I had to take it back 9 times, I'd try something else out. Ask if you can switch. It shouldn't cost you anything as long as the retail price is equivalent or lower than the MyTouch 4g, and if I'm not mistaken, it's one of the higher priced ones (rightfully, so). If you don't hate a keyboard, the G2 might be good for you, but I hear the hinge has problems and knowing your luck, the hinge would break apart upon first use. So maybe the Galaxy S 4g? I know Samsung has great hardware, even if their software is crap, as is their update schedules, but that is easily fixed with custom ROMs.
Either that, or wait and return it completely, if you're still within your return time and keep your upgrade for when the better phones come out, i.e HTC Sensation, etc, and just use something affordable off of eBay or Craigslist. Meh
Just my two cents. Sorry if it didn't help much, but I hope your luck gets better. :/
Update:
My luck has gotten worse. I received another replacement phone on April 15th. A week later, April 22nd, I noticed a dead pixel on my screen.
*Sigh* I have no idea what to do now.
You need to move on to a different device. I've never heard of anyone have so many problems with a device.

I called in and spoke to technical support. They asked me to bring the phone to a store so that they can fill out a request for warranty exchange form. However, their tone basically implied something like, "It's impossible that you are getting so many broken phones. We need to verify that your phone is really defective before we do another exchange."
I brought it to a store and the retail sales manager had no idea why technical support sent me there, and basically told me to go call customer service again. He did, however, notate that there were a few dead pixels on the screen and that there was no physical, nor was there water damage.
I then called retentions and the supervisor picks up (without any transferring either). I explained to her exactly what happened, and how technical support had sent me into the store. She told me that she has no idea why because they could have filled out the form for warranty exchange over the phone, just like the other exchanges that I have done so far.
She apologized for what happened and said that I qualify for a multiple exchange (sorry if I got the term wrong!). She said that the manufacturer would exchange my Mytouch 4g for a Motorola Charm..
I explained that it would be a MAJOR downgrade. She then submits the form for the exchange and told me that it would be shipped express free of charge.
So you getting another mt4g or the charm? I'm still teipping about them offering you a charm over a mt4g. They are nuts!

Another MyTouch4g.. Hopefully the 10th one's the charm!

My rant.

As a few of you know I broke my phone a couple of weeks back. And I'm at the point now where I have decided that I need a thread to ***** and moan about my insurance company.
They received my phone on the 21st of June and took my excess and told me the turn around time was 10 days. So day 10 I call up to find out what is going on.
Because the insurers haven't got heard from the repair centre they will automatically send me a replacement. Call today and they don't have a replacement available so will spend the next 5 days looking for one. If they can't find one they will look at a different handset.
This has me worried, I do not under any circumstances want a phone without a hardware keyboard, obviously it needs to be android and must be rootable and have good dev support. I would be interested if anyone can recommend a handset apart from the G2/DZ that fulfills these requirements.
Also using there timeframe the worst case scenario is that the total time I could be without my phone is a month. Which I consider unacceptable given that I pay £10p/m for what is supposed to be one of the best products available in the UK. And I say that because I have to sell this product as a part of my job.
It's a joke.
Feel free to sympathise with me or ***** and moan about your experiences with insurance company's.

Have every intention of it, I'm in the process of drafting a letter of complaint
Feel your pain...
When my previous phone (HTC Kaiser) went bad and had to be sent in for warranty repair, I was resigned to going back to my stupid dumb-phone for three weeks and I almost went crazy.
If something were to happen to my Desire Z, I'd be seriously tempted to buy a new one with over-night shipping (no decent phone stores around here), then send the other in for service. I'd just keep the old repaired one for a spare, or sell it.
soory to hear that cj.
Hopefully your insurance company gets their crap together and gets you a replacement asap. Have you ever thought of calling them with a direct threat thatyou will file a complaint to whatever governing department about their incompetency?I can't see how hard it can be to get a replacement for you. FFS they could've easily bought you a new one and send it toyou rather than wasting time trying to find a refurbished unit.
I heard someone once say that insurance is like making a bet that something bad might happen, but seems like you didn't even get a payout when something did happen! £10pm? Sounds like a ripoff.
In your letter of complaint, you can drop in that if they continue not to honour their contract with you, you will take this up with the Financial Ombudsman Service. More info about them here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/fight-back-fos
The Financial Ombudsman Service website itself also has advice on how to handle complaining before you refer to them:

Cheers for the links. I have decided to give them until Tuesday before I start going down the the root of making a complaint. If they are unable to offer me suitable replacement handset on Tuesday, I then intend to make a complaint.
I do have another card up my sleeve and its not one that I wanted to play but I may consider it. I work for the UK's second largest mobile phone retailer* and as such the insurance product I have is also the one that I have to sell on a day to day basis. We have it drummed in to our heads that this is one of the best products in country in terms of value for money and the level of cover that it offers. So how am I supposed to sell this supposedly fantastic product when my experience with it has be about the terrible. I am an honest person and do tell things as they are and in all good faith I could not recommended this insurance product given my poor experience with it.
So I'm wondering if I don't get the desired outcome on Tuesday should I tell them this and would it actually help? My guess is no but it is another thing for me to consider
*I wont mention the name but its the company where I work, but we are perceived as wide boys and con men and we have really bad TV advertising. Anyone in the UK should know who I mean
I have just finished writing my letter of complaint. For some reason though I had been locked out of my online account so was unable retrieve my policy id and my claim number. So I called them up and got a surprise. A new handset is on its way to me, i should have it by the end of the week

Received my replacement handset today. Got it rooted and virtuous unity running. Wife calls me, volume is on loud but no sound comes out the speaker. Try some music and nothing.
Also the information label under the battery was almost falling off, the void sticker was missing and all of the visible screws looked like they had been unscrewed with an axe.
I now have to wait for a courier to collect the broken phone and wait for them to ship me another replacement.

I have had a horrible problem with HTC. My new desire z broke after 2 days of me having it. I sent it off to get repaired. When it came back it was scratched and dented so I complained. They agreed to replace the parts to say sorry. But it has been 5 weeks since I sent the phone to them and I still do not have it. This is because they have changed repair centers they said. It isn't good enough so after a lot of moaning they are sending me and incredible s which is good as I am not bothered about a hardware QWERTY. Still not good enough from HTC.
how did you even break the phone in 2 days? It sounds like you abused it somehow.

Why do people hate refurbished phones?

I've been lucky enough to have never needed my phone replaced and I've had over 30 or 40 phones thanks to connections at best buy.
My question is why do people hate them? Obviously your "brand new" (and i use parentheses because people think a 8 month old phone doesn't deserve a refurbished one as a replacement) has the exact same chance of not working properly. I can understand one month old but anything past that is not new anymore.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
I think part of the issue with phones is that people don't want something that someone has had pressed against their cheek or stuffed in their pocket for the past few months.
This is apart from the obvious fact that a refurb it may still be broken.
I have personally had very good luck with refurbed cameras.

Honestly, because I've never received a refurbished phone that didn't fail on me within a month.
I don't care if it's "refurbished" or "new" I just want it to work 100% and not fail on me.
I'm inclined to agree that after a certain point you aren't really 'deserving' of a brand new device. I think it's simply the fact that the device isn't 'brand new and out of box' and has been 'handled.' I guess I can sort of understand why people might have a problem with it, but if it works and isn't entirely flawed in some manner, then what is the problem? I had 2 refurbished PS3's die on me in a year. Obviously I got 'lucky.' In that regard I understand why someone would be hesitant to get one. But more often than not refurbs actually work as intended. Shocking. But the practice is a tried and relatively true one.
I think you should get a freebee.. one free new phone. Anything after that.. refurbished

I just activated my refurbished phone. It took Sprint a month to get one for me. This one doesn't charge at all. The store said it would take at least a week to get me another one. When I asked what I should do about my phone in the meantime, the employee told me I could bring my phone into the store everyday to have them charge it. He was serious.
The icing on the cake is that they won't call when the new phone comes in. I'm supposed to call them everyday and ask if it's there. But the store doesn't ever answer their phone! After going through the phone tree twice, it just says "Sorry, all reps are busy, please make an appointment online." Somehow this is the only store in all of San Francisco that can even do replacements. I ****ing hate Sprint. [/RANT]

I think you should have to get a refurbished phone, then if that fails you should be allowed a new one.

From what I have expierenced, refurbished phones are rarely problem free. Thus causing people to question refurb phones and the quality control that goes into refurbishment.

Call tech support and tell them your situation and they can send you one over the phone. I have the same problem in the southbay. The store always has at least a 45 min wait before you can even get help and they never answer their phone.

You mean sorta like download a new one?? Gotta love Sprint's technology
Will they send you a phone if they can't verify the issue? Is there a specific support number you call?
I've never received a replacement "over the phone", it has always taken overnight.
Refurb'd phones are put back together poorly IMO, my wife got a replacement that started to seperate from the case, we complained, they sent a "New" EVO the next day.
I have two refurb'd that are just fine though, we have 8 EVO's.

The term over the phone refers to the fact he can get a replacement by speaking to someone over the phone instead of having to deal with the situation he has at his local sprint store.

Yea they will. You should be honest about the problem because if you lie and sprint determines there is no issue with they phone they can charge you an additional amount.

Sprint has questionable refurbishment techniques. I've been told that the whole process is outsourced. I've read a lot about people getting refurbished phones that have known problems, like screen separation and bright spots on the screen. In many cases, it seems likely that those are the reasons why the phone was returned in the first place, and their refurbishing does not take care of the issue for which the phone was returned.
That said, I used to be on a Centro, and I went through three new ones before I ended up with a refurb. The refurb lasted a hell of a lot longer than the new ones. The only problem with it is that it was kind of gross when I got it. It had smudges and one of the buttons was a little cracked. But the phone itself worked great for the year and a half that I used it.
And yea, there's the gross factor too. Who knows who had their face pressed up against my refurb phone. Ick.
I don't like the idea that it could have been thumped around, and only the most obvious failing component was replaced, leaving you with a "ready to break" phone. That being said, I've never actually had a problem with a refurbished unit, (phone or other). All in the head I guess.

I've seen as many new Evo's that had the screen separation issues, charger issues etc etc. I can see there being a bit more of a chance that a refurbished device isn't going to be up to par. I like the idea of maybe a new device and every device following is a refurb. As for the dirty screens ... maybe that's how I caught that face tattoo known as cheek herpes.

Well... DUH, some people have no sense of humor, must be due to lack of root... I dunno.
So far only on my first refurb from August last year. So far so good (knocks wood). My launch day (002)Evo's 4G got up, and gone (radio was shot). The refurb is a launch day 003. As with anything you put in contact with your body for the first time you should wipe it down first even if new(some of the toxic chemicals used in production are rather nasty).
