Is someone else picking up development of Hydra Kernals? - Droid Incredible General

Not sure if I dreamt it or where I heard it from that someone else was going to be picking up development of the Hydra Kernals, any truth to this?
Would love to see an update to Hydra with the new codes floating around.

There was some discussion of this before ejhart left the kernel scene. I'm not sure that anyone took it on. I was a huge fan of his work. Always put out stable kernels. You would not see 'zomg boot loop' threads when people ran hydra. He always worked very hard to ensure the gap between stability and performance was at an absolute minimal.
The guy knows his ****. I'd love to see him come back just to release a kernel on the new source.

I don't like answering threads like this cause I like people to test them out for themselves cause it's a personal choice. But, if you like Sense builds, check out DarchLegend 5.0.5 (or the stable ROM in the first post of that thread), or Fresh 2.0d. If you like AOSP and don't mind losing camera, definitely check out DarchDroid. I am using it now and it is a solid rom. ZenEXP is fun to play around with, but is not completely functional as of yet. But as I said before, I encourage you to try them all and see what fits you the best.
I like my bread toasted do to OC kernel.
I predict its the future of most hero roms.
I like the MatrixROM.
It's simple, fast, and stable. A good blank slate that you can scale into whatever you want.

The point of this thread remains a bit unclear to me. Are you assuming
that we are all the same and your idea of best is the same as ours?
Also everyones exp are different. If you would flash a rom blindly
because someone you dont even know is serious or not suggested it,
then you my friend are probably due for a phone bricking rickrolling.....
Good luck to all those that flash because of others suggestions on
finding something that you yourself truely enjoy. Its bascially the same
as asking ppl to tell you what your favorite sitcom is. I would assume
anyone here already knows their favorite rom(If they havent compiled
it themselves)along with the reasons for it being so. But we all contribute
to the community in different ways, and if this is yours then thanks.
CB.CP is Epic!!! Very Fast!!
Yet another thread that shouldn't need to exist....there are plenty of other threads asking essentially the same exact question.....
*sighs* anyways...the only correct answer to your thread OP.....the best rom out there is the one that works best for you and your needs. Sift through all the roms out there and you will find your diamond in the rough.

Ya but there are people out there who don't have the patience of doing that........ *hulk smash* I lost count how many times I've flashed the last two months since the 2.1 roms started to roll in. Sometimes even if I flash the same rom, wiping in between, I don't always have the same experience twice.
It's a process...but one that leads to happiness in the end once you find that one that makes your phone go 'ahhhhhhhh thats more like it'
I buy my computer chairs the same way...I basically blindfold myself and just start sitting in every damn chair in the store from cheap to expensive till my body lets me know I've made the right choice. Sure....it ends up being a gawd damn $350 chair but it was worth it haha /tangent

Maybe we can stop calling things pointless and leave it has a just a poll..
We can see what most people prefer and what everyones personal feeling is to the rom they are using.
And also for people rooting for the first time. I wouldnt recommend "just flash every rom you can and make a decision".
I would recommend flashing what the majority of people use and feel comfortable with. And then experiment from there.
This thread can also be informational if people stop complaining and post why they think a certain rom is better.
I understand there is more threads like this, but this has all current roms.

Well, ok maybe I'm just mentally exhausted and was a little on the harsh side, but if anything, can this be merged with the other threads asking what the best/fastest/stable roms out there are.....
Agreed w/ a majority of the posters so far....ROM flashing, be it w/ a Droid, a WinMo, or other O/S...is always about user preference. There will never be a consensus "best" in that regard...
That said, while I tend to gloss or skip over threads like this, I do attentively examine the "most stable ROM" threads, as ultimately....regardless of what eye candy or features I want in a phone, it still needs to function AS A PHONE!
I'm sure this priority will vary in rank w/ people who may use their phone for business purposes as much or more than personal (ie. myself), but when it comes down to it, I could care less how many zoom features I have in my camera, so long as my system lag is minimal, SMS works, and I can hear a caller on the other end of the line!
Off my soapbox now, and back to the original question...I'm toggling between the Darchdroid ROM for it's lightning speed and DC's latest w/ the today's latest mod updates. Tomorrow....who the F knows?

I would normally agree with the darchdroid as I really do truely love his work, it feels the fastest, but I'm running into waay too many problems with push gmail, battery life, vm notification, and some other stuff. v2 (pre-OC) worked really well, guess I'll go back to it after stuff gets fixed.

hah, good question. I'll cover the basics you can do the rest of the research, essentially CM6 is a customer Rom, (stands for Cyanogenmod version 6) for android devices. You can learn more by visiting cyanogenmod.com
<opinion>
Also, cyanogenmod would happen to be my favorite custom rom, a lot of extra features are included, its pretty well optimized and you can expect updates often. I've personally used Cyanogen on the Mytouch and Nexus one, and I can't wait to see a version on the Vibrant, once an official stable version comes out, you can probably expect Android 2.2 and a lot of optimizations that would may the vibrant what it should have been on launch day.
</opinion>
Also I hate to throw this in, being a fairly new poster and all (and not being a mod) but I believe that this thread would belong in the vibrant general forum as opposed to the dev forum. Just a heads up so you don't get flamed in the future

Helpful post, alludes to something I remember mentioning
@andershizzle: if you do decide on running any roms such as CM6, the best tip that can be offered is to make sure you understand what you are doing and read any instructions carefully before you proceed, and make sure you understand the instructions too. Remember to ask for help before doing something that might turn your phone into a $500 paperweight (or in the vibrants case its more of an expensive decoration since I wouldn't trust it to hold down paper. It'd probably blow away too.)

Not being a 'nit-picker', but CM6 uses 2.2 (froyo). CM5 is 2.1 (eclair) and CM4 was 1.6 (donut). Hmm....now I'm getting hungry.
But yes, I'm definitely looking forward to see CM6 on the Vibrant. Only downside is it will look like the stock CM6 (meaning our Vibrant png's will be replaced ).
Guess I might start working on the replacement Vibrant theme.
Moved to General forum. The development forum is only for development threads. (Threads with actual development happening.)
Questions should always be in the General forums (or Q&A if your device has a Q&A forum.)

When I'd made the decision to move from my N1 to Vibrant, I was all excited to find out there was going to be a CM for Vibrant. Now, I don't care so much. Vibrant has so many things I was already replacing that it's cut down on my apps somewhat.
I got into rooting for App2SD, and with my Vibrant it just isn't necessary now to run a custom rom. I will miss the undervolting and overclocking, though I sort of hope someone will work on kernels which will work with the stock build. I did a simple root just to use my root apps. Otherwise, Vibrant is pretty good for me.
BTW, this isn't any sort of anti CM post ... I love the work he and his cronies do, and some times I hope that they'll get snapped up by one of the big guys out there. They should be making bank for their talents.
Well I feel like an idiot for posting in the Dev section. Accident. Lmao.
Anyways I've flashed ROMs on a Touch Pro 2 (WinMo *cough*terrible) before so I'm decently familiar with that.
Is CM6 like, Stock 2.2? I'm looking for a stock-as-possible ROM, is that what I should be getting?
Hehe, guess I'll just try it when it comes. But thanks for all info.
Will we be able to install CM6 with ROM Manager?

It's not speculation. There is active development for the Vibrant going on. It's just not far along enough yet for an experimental release.
You can follow wesgarner and scepterr on Twitter for the latest updates since they're heading the Vibrant branch. Wes is primarily focused on the MT3G Slide a the moment though since he promised to work on that one first and it's farther along, but he has also been actively working on the Vibrant too.
I just want CM6 on Vibrant to see Wes work his hiney off
No, not really. But I know he will.
The CM team adds a year to our gadgets. All I really want is to get rid of the stinky calendar app right now, and I can do that without CM6 (4,5 or 7, whatever). In eight months, though, when 1.5 or 2gH processors are selling, some ingenious JIT tweak revolutionizes speed, and/or the size of Google Earth becomes more commonplace, I'm going to want CM. I'm going to want it to be in its ruts, hashed & rehashed. Im not necessarily expecting it, but I sure am gonna want it, and be grateful if it's there for me and my old phone.
The CM team is also willing to try new stuff, and can get a load of people to test it. So Apps2SD started where? Got popular how? It's stock now?
CM is open source, and has got a lot of people using and understanding what open source is. The social aspect of software is all too often misunderstood, or just plain dismissed. XDA-developers has revolutionized software as we know it. We'd all be spoon fed M$ users without this site, and possilby without CM specifically. These guys will be in software history textbooks.
So, I'm working donations into my budget. I'ts much cheaper than buying a new phone every few months, or putting up with stock software on old hardware. I will pay these guys as long as they're willing to work their magic.
(By the way, every once is a while I crack out my old Tmo MDA, just for kicks for a few hours. It works beautifully thanks to a custom ROM. Thinking about giving it to my Mom just so she can have a Tmo "smartphone." I love XDA. I love open source, even when it's not exactly.)

Rom Overload?

Is it just me or does it seem like everyone and their mother are posting Roms in the Evo development subforum?
I'm not going to name names or anything, but there seem to be a few teams that work very hard at distinguishing themselves as great releases only to get overtaken by people launching derivatives that are not much more than wallpaper changes of the very same roms?
Many of us can tell the distinction between the two, but I worry about new folks coming in who have no idea. I'm not going to spread FUD, but installing roms from an untrustworthy source is a great way for real problems to be introduced into the security model of the Android platform.
Does anyone else see this as a concern? Are there any solutions we as a group can come up with? Is this really not a big deal?
Yes you are correct
OMG I changed the color of the call [email protected]!!!!! NEW ROM!!!!!
Instead of theme change.
Either go cyanogen (uber premium) or stay rooted stock.
No need for the other bs. They don't do anything.
Now the kernels, I like, keep them going though. But the roms need to stop.
I think people are just making them in a sad attempt to gain free donations for their "efforts" or lack thereof.

so let me get this straight. you're automatically dismissing OMJ's work, Baked Snack, Fresh, Damage Control, etc. just to name a few, simply because they are not cyanogen? better at ease son.
secondly, you can't simply lock down the forum for the "legendary" cooks. what happens if a noobie comes in with a simply stellar rom that gives us 12 years of battery life and the ability to teleport but because he's not Cyanogen, he can't release? that seems a little asinine.
i think people need to be responsible for their own phones. research, do a little leg work, talk with some forum members, make an informed decision and go with it.

Nice way of twisting what I said. BTW...
Nice upoad speed dude 44mb
I'm still a relative newb to Android, but I can see how it would be easy to get overloaded with all the ROMs out there. I've bounced back and forth between Fresh, CM6, and rooted stock for a while and I finally got sick of having to set up my phone over and over again (yes, I know about Titanium, but it's not good for certain types of things). Anyway, I finally said f*** it and flashed CM6 again and have left it there. None of them are perfect, but CM6 works the best for me.

Less twisting then what you think. It's not CM or stay stock. I personally ran CM nightlies and CM6, both times I left them because even with all the fine work he's done there are very large and blatant things I don't think are great about it.
Does that mean it's low end, no, but there are lots of Roms every bit as highend and polished as CM.
Now on the main OP, I agree that we are seeing a flood, but also that there is nothing to do about it in an open community which is pushing people to tweak and express and share. It is what it is, and if they aren't calling out the people who put in the actual time into said Rom and giving them all the praise for the actual work then shame on them.
One way to help new users do research, is if there was a chart comparing the more popular roms... o wait there is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746611
pretty unbiased test that compares several features that most people would look for in a rom.

Neif, you crack me up whenever I see you pushing your grid. I've been dircting people to the wiki to check it out, but good luck trying to stay on top of all of the new releases. More power to you.
And to bring the thread back on topic - there do seem to be a lot of roms floating around that don't really seem to bring anything new to the table.
People are just posting what works for them. I am glad there are so many ROMs. If you think this is bad, I guess you never had a G1.
This really isnt something I'd be complaining about. Check out SDX forums (Moment support). Theres like one rom still receiving updates. The Hero forum is also losing support. Im more than happy to see people pushing a rom they cooked. It means the kitchens out there are actually getting used for the reason they were made available. Imo thats what open source is all about. If you dont trust it, dont flash it. Its that simple.

I also love that the kitchens are being used - I'm dying to try one myself. I don't think its a trust issue though, I think its that some of these roms don't bring anything unique to the table, other than some theming and the removal of some apps.

dsixda's kitchen has pretty much everything you need. I installed Ubuntu in Virtual Machine and have started messing around, but unless you know what to and not to change, there isnt alot you can do to make the rom unique. But its worth doing if you're interested in learning about rom development.

I've been looking at cooking my own rom but the thing is I would not only give credit where credit is due but also call it what it is.
I may come up with the perfect setup of base rom, kernal, apps, theme and just want to share with people who maybe like me are looking for that specific setup.
Easier to flash a rom with all that baked in then flashing everything individually. As long as someone credits correctly and doesn't try and say they did it all themselves why does it matter if it's documented properly.
Doesn't make it a worthless rom just makes it a colaboration of great work.

Its not a question of worth, simply a question of signal to noise.
I've run DC, Cal's, Netarchy's, Baked, Fresh, CM, Nightlies, and probably ecen a few others...I still think some sort of metric is required.
I'm gonna try thinking of something.
First I think we should be happy the evo has a strong community. We may even lose some with the galaxy s phones coming out.
Next a agree many aren't much of a difference, but for those that don't have time to tweak stuff in the kitchen before installing, it is nice to find exactly what you want.
Finally I'm sorry to sound like an elitist, but this is a hackers forum. There shouldn't be such an expectation of things always being safe and working.

Ziggy 471 kernels added. Perform damn well for HTC based kerns. Very excited!
:::::::::::::UPDATE 3/16:::::::::SavagedZen 2.1's:::::::
ok, this new kernel rocks. SZ .2.0 Is up on my website for download and for voting and it's on the graphs. Amazing results to say the least. Most significant battery changes in a long long time. Closest to 42 on linpack ever. They just released a .2.1cfs so I assume they forgot something in the .2.0's. Usually that is what happens when they release a .x.1 right after a .x.0 So I will update the downloads accordingly. But I know that the .2.0s perform bugfree for my everyday use. Maybe it was just the SZ governor they forgot to merge again or whatever, I dunno, I'll look into it. Enjoy the results.
I am absolutely not allowed to tell you to click on my ads. But do what you think is right. and try to do it every time you visit the page lol.

THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP FINDING THESE KERNELS AS THEY DROP!!

Wow, great work, that's a lot of info in there.
Are you planning to test some of the non-sense kernels? I saw somone post a quadrant score over 1700 with the MiUI test rom, would be interesting to see some of the AOSP results.
awesome work man... its gonna be great to see everything side by side like that
one question tho: no love for the AOSP kernels?
edit: apparently I have been beaten to the punch
looks like King's # 6 is the best all around...
from what i saw....i could be wrong
yeah, AOSP kernels would be great to see data for compared to all of these 'almost the samey' kernels.
and I'm back from work lol!
Yeah aosp kernels I am going to do add in next. I just tested snap with turbo, and LOL omfg 2500 in quad is insane.
Linpacks didn't go up though, so it must not have been dalvik vm optimizations. I wonder what turbo really is.... hrmm
And yeah, on sense roms i use kings 6bfs as my daily driver. Error free, smooth as silk, and lightning fast, all with amazing battery life.. Kings 7bfs and 8cfs had some really weird problems and I wont touch it. It was jerky as hell, didn't score well. I tried several wipes/reflashes/redownloads, etc. without resolving it.
very nice!! thanks for the contribution!
ive been doing the same thing charting rom (with and without custom kernels) development progress from 2.1 stock all the way till now with fresh and netarchy.
Its just fun to see how fast the phone has gotten through the months since release.
Dunno if and when i'll get the time to illustrate the data, but its been my little side quest too!!
cheers homie.
Can't wait for the AOSP kernel results! nice work!
Great work. However, if I may offer a suggestion, please add the stock kernels so we have an idea as to how they compare?
I too would love to see a comparison to stock. I haven't made the jump to a new kernel yet, but I want to soon and this thread is great for helping me pick which one.

Everyone always asks what the best kernel is, or what the differnces are between them. I decided to spend a month or so testing stuff. I made a webpage where all of you can view the differences. I will of course be continually updating the page with new kernels and hopefully new tests as well. There is my contact info on the page, and you can just pm me here also if you want. Of course I put up a donation link, don't flame me, it just takes a lot of my time to do this, so I figured if anyone appreciated it and wants to donate then my kids can certainly use the diapers lol.
Enjoy the data everyone
More info is of course available on the page. I will be gone for the next hour or so and then I will be able to respond to everyones questions/comments. Thanks for looking,. I suck at making webpages lol.

That's actually very interesting, plus it gives me some numbers I can look at improving on as well ;D
Hey netarchy, glad to see a kernel dev in here~! Woot. Let me know if you have a new kernel in development, a updated version of 4.1.9.1, or any other one you want to send me to test out and add to the list.
BTW skydeaner, your donate link isn't working for me.

Son of a biscuit, better get that workin.
EdIT:
got it going i think. try again if you like
Nice write up. Definitely helpful
Nice work man
We all appreciate your hard work and contributions.
Htc 6 and 7 kernels added in the mix! Eat it up peoples. It's easy to see why 7 has everyone praising it over battery life. It has an extremely low idle power draw, and that is what most people's phones do 90 percent of the time anyways.
will someone please send me the 3.29 kernel from the new OTA? send it to [email protected] or [email protected] and I'll have it on the list tomorrow. FPS Unlocked straight from htc??? ZOMG they listened to evo owners WOOOOOOHOOOO!. This should lead to some interesting hacked versions of it. They fixed the battery life, and now this. You'd think they care or something lol.
super impressive, i just rooted a couple of my friends' evo's this evening and this was super helpful. I'm on cyanogen but they both wanted to stay with sense. will definitely donate on payday, hope you get the aosp kernels added in.

2500? Keep pushing, some people are getting up to 2800...

[Q] need a custom boot animation cooked based off existing boot animation.

Is there anyine here adapt at boot animations who can cook me up a modified animation with added text?
Thanks,
Posted from my a500 oc @ 3ghz ddr3 speed 17% boost. Taboony 2.2 Honeyvillan 2.4+ custom with ntegra fixes. 17890 cf-bench, 9000 antutu. Custom named n-Game OS v 1.2.3b.
Why not do it yourself? It's just a matter of editing some jpg's then rezipping (storage mode).

You might see if you can get ahold of gammaRascal. His Siggy reads like this... "Interested in a custom Boot Animation for your ROM? Contact me! Want to incorporate one of my stand-alone Boot animation? Contact me!"
He is very helpful around here and I've seen some of the animations that he makes. Good stuff.
I pretty much ignore requests from new users or those who haven't participated in the community long enough. It's completely personal and keeps me free from headaches.
On the other side of that, of course, is that I'm more than happy to jump hoops for someone who's had a positive impact here and is a member in good standing in any of the forums here [and I'll check posts and I will read responses].
If there is a project [rom etc] and there's progress, I'm in. If it's a half baked affair from a 10 post noob with big ideas and waving their 'I need a custom bootanimation' arms around like a monkey? Pass.

Lol, I understand. If I had taken one moment to think about it from that angle I would never namedropped on ya. But I do like your work. Thanks, and appreciate you not griping me out when I might have overstepped. I will try to pay more attention.

Not at all I'm flattered and appreciate it. I'd be pretty thrilled to be a part of a quality rom but my hopes aren't too high on that front as they mostly do them on they're own.
I'm just too busy to **** around with half assed ideas and personal requests from people I don't know, ya know.
I am actually working on a linux hybrid that will bring some linux features to andtoid. You will be sble to read sb out it soon in the projects homepage. I have a stable version already, however am waiting for ICS asop or deoxed nexus dump before continuing the project. It is a very serious project, one that I personally hope to win some competitons with. However I am now contemplwting putting the project entirely on hold until transformer 2 or ntegra 3 hits late this year.
