hah, good question. I'll cover the basics you can do the rest of the research, essentially CM6 is a customer Rom, (stands for Cyanogenmod version 6) for android devices. You can learn more by visiting cyanogenmod.com
<opinion>
Also, cyanogenmod would happen to be my favorite custom rom, a lot of extra features are included, its pretty well optimized and you can expect updates often. I've personally used Cyanogen on the Mytouch and Nexus one, and I can't wait to see a version on the Vibrant, once an official stable version comes out, you can probably expect Android 2.2 and a lot of optimizations that would may the vibrant what it should have been on launch day.
</opinion>
Also I hate to throw this in, being a fairly new poster and all (and not being a mod) but I believe that this thread would belong in the vibrant general forum as opposed to the dev forum. Just a heads up so you don't get flamed in the future

Helpful post, alludes to something I remember mentioning
@andershizzle: if you do decide on running any roms such as CM6, the best tip that can be offered is to make sure you understand what you are doing and read any instructions carefully before you proceed, and make sure you understand the instructions too. Remember to ask for help before doing something that might turn your phone into a $500 paperweight (or in the vibrants case its more of an expensive decoration since I wouldn't trust it to hold down paper. It'd probably blow away too.)

Not being a 'nit-picker', but CM6 uses 2.2 (froyo). CM5 is 2.1 (eclair) and CM4 was 1.6 (donut). Hmm....now I'm getting hungry.
But yes, I'm definitely looking forward to see CM6 on the Vibrant. Only downside is it will look like the stock CM6 (meaning our Vibrant png's will be replaced ).
Guess I might start working on the replacement Vibrant theme.
Moved to General forum. The development forum is only for development threads. (Threads with actual development happening.)
Questions should always be in the General forums (or Q&A if your device has a Q&A forum.)

When I'd made the decision to move from my N1 to Vibrant, I was all excited to find out there was going to be a CM for Vibrant. Now, I don't care so much. Vibrant has so many things I was already replacing that it's cut down on my apps somewhat.
I got into rooting for App2SD, and with my Vibrant it just isn't necessary now to run a custom rom. I will miss the undervolting and overclocking, though I sort of hope someone will work on kernels which will work with the stock build. I did a simple root just to use my root apps. Otherwise, Vibrant is pretty good for me.
BTW, this isn't any sort of anti CM post ... I love the work he and his cronies do, and some times I hope that they'll get snapped up by one of the big guys out there. They should be making bank for their talents.
Well I feel like an idiot for posting in the Dev section. Accident. Lmao.
Anyways I've flashed ROMs on a Touch Pro 2 (WinMo *cough*terrible) before so I'm decently familiar with that.
Is CM6 like, Stock 2.2? I'm looking for a stock-as-possible ROM, is that what I should be getting?
Hehe, guess I'll just try it when it comes. But thanks for all info.
Will we be able to install CM6 with ROM Manager?

If you look at his changelog on his site he shows you the common Froyo bits and then shows the bits for different phone types. I would call it a Custom/Stock Hybrid

It's not speculation. There is active development for the Vibrant going on. It's just not far along enough yet for an experimental release.
You can follow wesgarner and scepterr on Twitter for the latest updates since they're heading the Vibrant branch. Wes is primarily focused on the MT3G Slide a the moment though since he promised to work on that one first and it's farther along, but he has also been actively working on the Vibrant too.
I just want CM6 on Vibrant to see Wes work his hiney off
No, not really. But I know he will.
The CM team adds a year to our gadgets. All I really want is to get rid of the stinky calendar app right now, and I can do that without CM6 (4,5 or 7, whatever). In eight months, though, when 1.5 or 2gH processors are selling, some ingenious JIT tweak revolutionizes speed, and/or the size of Google Earth becomes more commonplace, I'm going to want CM. I'm going to want it to be in its ruts, hashed & rehashed. Im not necessarily expecting it, but I sure am gonna want it, and be grateful if it's there for me and my old phone.
The CM team is also willing to try new stuff, and can get a load of people to test it. So Apps2SD started where? Got popular how? It's stock now?
CM is open source, and has got a lot of people using and understanding what open source is. The social aspect of software is all too often misunderstood, or just plain dismissed. XDA-developers has revolutionized software as we know it. We'd all be spoon fed M$ users without this site, and possilby without CM specifically. These guys will be in software history textbooks.
So, I'm working donations into my budget. I'ts much cheaper than buying a new phone every few months, or putting up with stock software on old hardware. I will pay these guys as long as they're willing to work their magic.
(By the way, every once is a while I crack out my old Tmo MDA, just for kicks for a few hours. It works beautifully thanks to a custom ROM. Thinking about giving it to my Mom just so she can have a Tmo "smartphone." I love XDA. I love open source, even when it's not exactly.)

Hello xda-ers!
I have been stalking around, tasting everybody's cooking for a couple of weeks now, and i have got to get something off my chest.
I did search, I do realize that what I am looking for can not be made and that its no one's fault (I might be giving htc a meaningful look right now).
I like a whole lot of roms and chefs here, I really do, but the rom I'm after seems to not exist - one of two options:
1. A hero rom with all the eyecandy, that's donut based for compatibility with newer apps like goggles and the like.
2. An Eclair rom that has video and youtube working.
And so I would like to ask of you wizzies, is there light at the end of the tunnel? Are things comming around? How do you see it?
Correct me if I'm wrong, hardware-ish the mytouch is 36 MB of ram shorter then a hero and a has a lesser camera, but its not like the hero is running its os on its last bits of ram or anything so basically what the hero can do the mytouch can do, no? Is it safe to assume that when the hero\magic gets an update (and I do hope that it does) someone could pull over some driver support for eclair or something?
Thank you all so much for all your hard work, you guys are the reason I love smartphones so much, I'm dirt poor but i promise I'll buy you guys a round of beer once I get out of college
Its a matter of time bro. Be batient. A month ago, none of the eclair roms had camera. Now they all do. A month before that none of the eclair roms had N1 voice keyboard. Now they all do. God knows what some of these amazing roms will have and do a month from now. [/good deed for the year]

1. The devs aren't the ones making the actual hero, they just make hero work with our phones. They can't just say "I want you to be donut", and it be donut. Htc decided to skip donut, and the devs can't do much about that. They can however give you 2.0 hero which is scattered about the forum.
2. Drivers, drivers, drivers. You know, the thing that appears in almost every first post for this problem

As I've said, I realize that.
My point is that apperently you can't cook rosie\sense\whatever onto a 1.6 rom without htc (Ref: "I might be giving HTC a meaningful look") and at the same time you can cook it onto a 2.0 rom - which means broken video drivers.
I'm sure there's a good reason for it, and this is not a rant, just needed to let steam out I guess.

maybe that "I might be giving HTC a meaningful look" should be turned into "i actually searched and posted in the Q&A section or the I didn't read before posting..."
No offence but seriously if you would have searched you would have found those 2 answers in almost every thread that had to do with hero or eclair...

I think someone leaked an HTC branded Eclair ROM with the "rosie/sense/whatever," and that's why you see it cooked into a 2.0 ROM.

Well back on topic/kinda...
Do we know for sure that htc will release the necessary drivers for video playback/camera? It sounds like some people are positive we'll get them eventually...I switched back to donut because I like being able to watch youtube, but its amazing how far along eclair roms have come, and mad props to NCommander for reverse engineering the camera drivers. Without him we'd still have no camera at this point. But I was just wondering if its confirmed or not that we will indeed get those drivers from htc one day.
Well, T-Mobile is teasing us with an Eclair update for our phones. We shall see.

I don't like answering threads like this cause I like people to test them out for themselves cause it's a personal choice. But, if you like Sense builds, check out DarchLegend 5.0.5 (or the stable ROM in the first post of that thread), or Fresh 2.0d. If you like AOSP and don't mind losing camera, definitely check out DarchDroid. I am using it now and it is a solid rom. ZenEXP is fun to play around with, but is not completely functional as of yet. But as I said before, I encourage you to try them all and see what fits you the best.

The point of this thread remains a bit unclear to me. Are you assuming
that we are all the same and your idea of best is the same as ours?
Also everyones exp are different. If you would flash a rom blindly
because someone you dont even know is serious or not suggested it,
then you my friend are probably due for a phone bricking rickrolling.....
Good luck to all those that flash because of others suggestions on
finding something that you yourself truely enjoy. Its bascially the same
as asking ppl to tell you what your favorite sitcom is. I would assume
anyone here already knows their favorite rom(If they havent compiled

Ya but there are people out there who don't have the patience of doing that........ *hulk smash* I lost count how many times I've flashed the last two months since the 2.1 roms started to roll in. We can see what most people prefer and what everyones personal feeling is to the rom they are using.
And also for people rooting for the first time. I wouldnt recommend "just flash every rom you can and make a decision".
I would recommend flashing what the majority of people use and feel comfortable with. And then experiment from there.
This thread can also be informational if people stop complaining and post why they think a certain rom is better.

Well, ok maybe I'm just mentally exhausted and was a little on the harsh side, but if anything, can this be merged with the other threads asking what the best/fastest/stable roms out there are.....
Agreed w/ a majority of the posters so far....ROM flashing, be it w/ a Droid, a WinMo, or other O/S...is always about user preference. There will never be a consensus "best" in that regard...
That said, while I tend to gloss or skip over threads like this, I do attentively examine the "most stable ROM" threads, as ultimately....regardless of what eye candy or features I want in a phone, it still needs to function AS A PHONE!
I'm sure this priority will vary in rank w/ people who may use their phone for business purposes as much or more than personal (ie. myself), but when it comes down to it, I could care less how many zoom features I have in my camera, so long as my system lag is minimal, SMS works, and I can hear a caller on the other end of the line!

I would normally agree with the darchdroid as I really do truely love his work, it feels the fastest, but I'm running into waay too many problems with push gmail, battery life, vm notification, and some other stuff. v2 (pre-OC) worked really well, guess I'll go back to it after stuff gets fixed.

I'd rather post a quick question to people who are dealing with this frequently, than trawl the web, sift through junk and install something which has lots of bugs.
Cheer up, its not all bad.
Thanks for the link.
you'll have to forgive XDA, recently it has attracted many young people that get bullied at home and school, this is a place they can come and anonymously display their e-toughness. Just ignore them.
btw, i dont think there is a sense rom that has everything working like your stock version. i hope im wrong but i was interested in rooting to use sense, in the development section i couldnt find any that didnt have disclaimers about things that arent working, so i havent gotten to try it out yet. But again, maybe im wrong, and i hope i am.
Without a criteria of what he is looking for other than good and stable it's hard to give a good answer. It's not about e-toughness, it's about searching, putting together an informative post, and reading the forum rules.
'cymru' is 100% correct. All it took was a search and reading comments about what does and does not work, then nandroid backup and try the rom and see if it passes the "good and stable" test.

Well there are some roms that have ported sense camera, and apps.
I do believe my "The Official" rom has them. It didn't come stock with the sense camera, but I had it installed (easy to do from spare parts, plus I have 720p recording).
The best you can do is look for a rom with those things ported over.

I might check that out...I tried KingKlick's latest rom and my phone rebooted all night long with it. Lamesauce.
I agree with cymru, its not that hard to click one section over to development and see what's there instead of someone making a new thread everytime, and xda agrees. Not a big a deal yes, just saying I agree

Hi guys, if the battle for whos the cleverist is now over, heres some feed back for the advice given.
I've installed, Evils q&d sensefroyo. Been running it for a few days, its cool. A little buggy, a few force closes, high battery use, no bluetooth, but very usable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730290
Again thanks for the input, hope this helps anyone else who was looking for similar info.
Cheers.
I tried kingxclikz and Paul's r23 roms, I must say the first one is very buggy and there are no ways to use it even for 24h(though I think it needs an eclair radio),Paul's rom is way more stable but the lack of Metamorph themes, trackball mods and BT are too important.
He promised to release a new version soon so all we can do is wait and see!
Ughh. No BT on any sense ROM then?
Is anybody even working on bluetooth for Desire roms? I don't think anybody actually is. There are a few people I think might be capable like Paul but he's busy with other things now by the looks of it
Is it just me or does it seem like everyone and their mother are posting Roms in the Evo development subforum?
I'm not going to name names or anything, but there seem to be a few teams that work very hard at distinguishing themselves as great releases only to get overtaken by people launching derivatives that are not much more than wallpaper changes of the very same roms?
Many of us can tell the distinction between the two, but I worry about new folks coming in who have no idea. I'm not going to spread FUD, but installing roms from an untrustworthy source is a great way for real problems to be introduced into the security model of the Android platform.
Does anyone else see this as a concern? Are there any solutions we as a group can come up with? Is this really not a big deal?
Yes you are correct
OMG I changed the color of the call [email protected]!!!!! NEW ROM!!!!!
Instead of theme change.
Either go cyanogen (uber premium) or stay rooted stock.
No need for the other bs. They don't do anything.
Now the kernels, I like, keep them going though. But the roms need to stop.
I think people are just making them in a sad attempt to gain free donations for their "efforts" or lack thereof.

so let me get this straight. you're automatically dismissing OMJ's work, Baked Snack, Fresh, Damage Control, etc. just to name a few, simply because they are not cyanogen? better at ease son.
secondly, you can't simply lock down the forum for the "legendary" cooks. what happens if a noobie comes in with a simply stellar rom that gives us 12 years of battery life and the ability to teleport but because he's not Cyanogen, he can't release? that seems a little asinine.
i think people need to be responsible for their own phones. research, do a little leg work, talk with some forum members, make an informed decision and go with it.

Nice way of twisting what I said. BTW...
Nice upoad speed dude 44mb
I'm still a relative newb to Android, but I can see how it would be easy to get overloaded with all the ROMs out there. I've bounced back and forth between Fresh, CM6, and rooted stock for a while and I finally got sick of having to set up my phone over and over again (yes, I know about Titanium, but it's not good for certain types of things). Anyway, I finally said f*** it and flashed CM6 again and have left it there. None of them are perfect, but CM6 works the best for me.

Less twisting then what you think. It's not CM or stay stock. I personally ran CM nightlies and CM6, both times I left them because even with all the fine work he's done there are very large and blatant things I don't think are great about it.
Does that mean it's low end, no, but there are lots of Roms every bit as highend and polished as CM.
Now on the main OP, I agree that we are seeing a flood, but also that there is nothing to do about it in an open community which is pushing people to tweak and express and share. It is what it is, and if they aren't calling out the people who put in the actual time into said Rom and giving them all the praise for the actual work then shame on them.
One way to help new users do research, is if there was a chart comparing the more popular roms... o wait there is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746611
pretty unbiased test that compares several features that most people would look for in a rom.

Neif, you crack me up whenever I see you pushing your grid. I've been dircting people to the wiki to check it out, but good luck trying to stay on top of all of the new releases. More power to you.
And to bring the thread back on topic - there do seem to be a lot of roms floating around that don't really seem to bring anything new to the table.
People are just posting what works for them. I am glad there are so many ROMs. If you think this is bad, I guess you never had a G1.
This really isnt something I'd be complaining about. Check out SDX forums (Moment support). Theres like one rom still receiving updates. The Hero forum is also losing support. Im more than happy to see people pushing a rom they cooked. It means the kitchens out there are actually getting used for the reason they were made available. Imo thats what open source is all about. If you dont trust it, dont flash it. Its that simple.

I also love that the kitchens are being used - I'm dying to try one myself. I don't think its a trust issue though, I think its that some of these roms don't bring anything unique to the table, other than some theming and the removal of some apps.

I do wish there was a subforum in the dev forum for roms. Perhaps a sticky's for the top 10 roms based on votes or downloads or some other type of ranking system.

dsixda's kitchen has pretty much everything you need. I installed Ubuntu in Virtual Machine and have started messing around, but unless you know what to and not to change, there isnt alot you can do to make the rom unique. But its worth doing if you're interested in learning about rom development.

I've been looking at cooking my own rom but the thing is I would not only give credit where credit is due but also call it what it is.
I may come up with the perfect setup of base rom, kernal, apps, theme and just want to share with people who maybe like me are looking for that specific setup.
Easier to flash a rom with all that baked in then flashing everything individually. As long as someone credits correctly and doesn't try and say they did it all themselves why does it matter if it's documented properly.
Doesn't make it a worthless rom just makes it a colaboration of great work.

Its not a question of worth, simply a question of signal to noise.
I've run DC, Cal's, Netarchy's, Baked, Fresh, CM, Nightlies, and probably ecen a few others...I still think some sort of metric is required.
I'm gonna try thinking of something.
First I think we should be happy the evo has a strong community. We may even lose some with the galaxy s phones coming out.
Next a agree many aren't much of a difference, but for those that don't have time to tweak stuff in the kitchen before installing, it is nice to find exactly what you want.
Finally I'm sorry to sound like an elitist, but this is a hackers forum. There shouldn't be such an expectation of things always being safe and working.

I do agree there are a lot out there and it can be tough for people to tell what is what. I don't think it's a bad thing though, device support is good, it means that hopefully things will be running for a long time to come.
I googled for a bit and found a few screenshots here and there..and this is the closest I've found to a definition
This is not cyanogenmod. Everything is hand codes by rascarlo and not cherry picked like jelly bro. Means instead of getting the code for all the phones cm supports you get only the necessary code. Its a real bare bones ROM. Its only for a select few and an acquired taste.

Is that it? Basically a minimal pure JB experience for the N4 "mako" specifically that we can then add customizations as we like?

All ROMs are free. Just flash it and try out the ROM. It's not like once you flash a ROM you can't go back.
Make a nandroid backup, flash ROM + gapps, try it.
Don't like it? Nandroid restore from your backup and it'll feel like you just time traveled.

tarro, thats kind of what i'm getting at. i'm trying to juggle like 3 phone forums (mytouch, hd2 and nexus 4) and its hard to keep up with all the toolkits and ROMs for each when you're not immersed in this every day.
it took me a month to wrap my head around cyanogen, AOSP, paranoid and now rasbean just showed up so i'm trying to educate myself on all these different products.

I think rasbeanjelly is far less modified than CM. It is VERY quick and stable. Not everyone wants all those extras. If you're curious, make a nandroid and flash the ROM.

Rasbeanjelly is a very niche Rom that is heavily themed and customized by Rascarlo to HIS liking. It is very fast, very stable, but also not as customizeable as CM or AOKP. If you like the theme and the way it comes configured it is an extremely nice Rom. However, if you like to tweak every aspect and have tons of goodies you wont like it.....oh, and the blue everywhere takes some getting used to also.

not really. there's a time commitment in going to the trouble to start down the custom ROM path with any phone. i konw this..been doing ROM updates on here since my old SDA.
i just want to know what it is..things like paranoid are NOT just ROMs..they're completely different way of approaching your phone and it would be stupid to flash if you didnt have a basic understanding of what is going on there.
i admit to being a thicky whale omelet, but it took me about an hour of reading before it finally clicked what paranoid did for you.

Then dont juggle between those 3 phones. Its obvious that N4 is the most superior one out of the three. You don't have to keep up with anything. A dev forum is like a shopping guide. You just don't know how to distinguish what makes that ROM popular, just read the features / search on youtube.
They're FREE roms.. just flash and experiment. It's not that difficult. Rasbeanjelly is a minimalistic ROM skinned to be all black.

You don't have to commit anything for a ROM. You just look at it, if it impresses you. Read the last couple pages for user feedback. Still like it? Flash it.
Don't like it? Nandroid restore back to what you were using before.
Go watch a youtube video. People do videos on these ROMs. Basic understanding of what? A lot of roms are identical and "kang" features off of each other and give credit where its due. Even what YOU quoted says that.

Flashing ROMs on other peoples' phone is a huge nono. It puts a responsibility on yourself.
You don't have to update their ROM everyday. They're not "phone nerds" and want their phone to be flashed new ROMs. Some people just want a phone that works out of the box. Not to mention, development for those phones aren't as huge as Nexus devices. myTouch brand has been declining.
the kids got the phones off ebay at christmas; they're capable little devices but i needed to remove the TMOBILE bloat first to make them usable.
the HD2 was retired with cracked glass for ages until i saw the android forum, dusted it off and put JB on it. it was so wonderful i had a guy in town put a new piece of glass on it and she's been loving it ever since.
i don't update their roms all the time; but the point was i have been all over the boards on here getting everyone's phone up and going and can't keep up with it all.
would you disagree i should have left those other phones alone?

You don't need a ROM to remove T-Mobile bloatware. All you need is root access. Development on those devices are vary limited and its hardware is starting to show its age to the point where newer ROMs with newer Android versions actually slow down the phone and a lot of 'hacks' are done to have that particular Android version because HTC/Huawei abandoned support for the phone.
HD2: You kind of went off-topic as my point is that you don't have to maintain all of their devices and keep flashing stuff for them. I'm sure they just want a phone that works and they don't care what Android version is on their phone. Most of the people I know in person don't really care unless they're tech savvy.
In the end to answer your question, Rasbeanjelly is a ROM.
Each ROM has their own features and the developer can choose to implement whichever features they want in their ROM. Some ROMs are minimal, feature-heavy, clean code, themed, 'kangs' (unofficial releases based off their source) with 'cherry picks' (stuff that isnt in their ROM but included their commits that are pending approval or stuff that just simply works)
