Whats the point of this super powerfull GPU when there are absolutely noooooooo games or applications that take advantage of it. NO GAMES for android what so ever!!!!!
Im honestly starting to think android is snot! Anyone else thinking about making a change to Windows Phone 7???
I'll think about WP7 when there are actual devices coming to Verizon, but I have seen no indication that they are going to be any better off on games. Just because they tout XBox Live being built in does not mean they have anything down the road.
Well iD software just hired a android programmer.

OP, I figure that once you learn how to type, spell, & understand good forum etiquette; you'll actually get a clue that Android is too "geeky" for you. There are plenty of games & many more to come as the platform & hardware mature but you're stuck with making a troll thread that serves no one here.
I think your thinking is backwards. Its this kinda leap in gpu that finally encourages devs to make more graphically heavy games. Why would they design something for a phone that cant run it well.
With all these new smartphones pushing out amazing cpu and gpu's im sure that we will see some major game companies step up to the bat and start designing for android .. just like they did with iphone once it could support it.
Also remember for many people android is the new baby, just became popular a couple years ago. And look at what has been done. I have owned many windows smartphones that have hads YEARS more time to dev and ive seen way less come out of them.
So yeah, go ahead and switch but i bet in 6-8 months you will be regretting it!
First off...Android phones Ive had.....Moto Droid, Htc Eris, Nexus One, Htc Incredible, Droid X...and now Fascinate.....So please dont tell me what Android is.
And Angry Birds is the simplest game in the world. Yes its fun to pass time....but any Android Phone can run it!!!! ANY!
Im not *****ing and moaning.... well maybe I am just a bit. But come on guys read the post....I said the GPU is overrated because there is nothing that takes advantage of it.....and the wait for OS Updates is ridiculous ....You all know this to be true!!!
Fragmentation is a *****!!
There will be no games or apps built specific for android that will not be built for Iphone....there all ports!!!!!! So please explain the point of the of a stonger GPU than Iphone? Hardware acceleration aside......Opera Browser might be the exception!!
Well a good gpu isn't just for games. It makes for a better browsing experience, better framerates with live wallpapers.
Also I'd like to add that if you bought an Android phone with the slightest amount of research involved you would have known that it isn't a great gaming platform. If games were any priority, you wouldn't have bought an android phone.
Troll harder next time.

I linked you to games.
Quite whining about fragmentation. That's just a buzz word people like to use instead of the real reason for not creating a product.
So what if there are no games built specifically for Android? Your point would be what? The fact remains that there are games for Android even if your not happy with them.
You could always move to the iPhone. Maybe that would make you feel better.
No games take advantage of the GPU.
Thats funny.
I've been checking out the psx emulator lately. It runs extremely smooth on this phone. And there are like 700 games to download for free in the rom buddy app. I'm pretty sure that takes advantage of the bad ass gpu. There are also emulators for several other classic game systems. I grew up playing that stuff, so it's pretty fun to go back to.
And sure we're waiting for froyo, but I don't mind the wait. Fragmentation is only a ***** to those too whiny and impatient to wait for a minimal upgrade. If you're not happy with thee phone now, froyo probably isn't going to be the miracle to change your mind.
Just suck it up and go buy your iPhone... Like all the other dumb girls that roam Jobs' pastures.

Hi guys,
Need some advise, i have had the SGS for around a month, the hardware is great and the screen quality is awesome, but the problem is lack of development support.
During the time i have had this device, probably 3 decent games (psx4droid, skies of glory and hyper jump) have been released, the rest have been released in the past.
No more than 5 useful applications have been released.
Not many of the Market apps are useful and most are spam.
I am thinking of switching to the iOS4, the development off apps there is far better and hundreds of new applications are released there.
Dont take this as a troll comment, i like the SGS, its just i dont like the lack of support.
Advise? Thanks.

And I dislike iTunes a lot.

No amount of great hardware or customization is going to make up for critical applications or games that you want.
I have an iPhone 3GS right now. I'm thoroughly unhappy with a lot of parts of the iPhone. I don't like that it's closed, I don't like major missing applications especially Google apps, I hate iTunes, I want real multi-tasking, I'm sick of fighting with jailbreaks... the list goes on.
That said, I am tentative about the move because a few apps are still missing for me. Games, I am not so worried about - I'm not much of a phone gamer. Right now, though, the negatives about my iPhone outweigh the few apps that are missing so it's time for me to switch.
You may be experiencing the opposite problem. That's completely a personal decision. I'd say, if you're a gamer, there is no better platform than the iPhone. There are really great games for it, more coming out all the time. It is absolutely the best mobile gaming platform out right now.
So do it. Life is too short to worry about stuff like this. If Android isn't meeting your needs, switch and be happy.
Me, I'm switching because I don't like the iPhone as a daily pocket device anymore. I'm keeping it to use at home, though, for the games and apps that don't exist on the Android platform.

If you are after mainly games then yes get an iphone, android is still a way behind in this area and might still take some time to catch up, while developers are slowly moving to android they are really still just testing the waters with android I feel and many games ported to android are either missing features or far more buggy than their iphone versions.
I am sure this will change as android keeps growing in popularity but if you want lots of games now then obviously the iphone is better in that area.

Yep. I don't understand the need to have other people convince you that you want to stay on Android.
Just go to iPhone if you feel that suits your needs.
Most useful apps that are on the iPhone are on Android...if anything they did a recent study and found there are more developers on Android then there for the iPhone....
But there are 2 things to consider..
1) iPhone has a lot of useless apps that do the same thing
2) Not all apps are always in the market place..for example EA games has quite a few games but for some reason keeps them hidden..but you can buy them if you want to directly...same for Gameloft and many other publishers..
Either way Android is growing quite fast and will continue to grow...as of 2010 I have yet to see 1 major developer do something for the iphone and not for Android..
Dear azazin,
I liked the way you said. You want something to explore rite ?
Your my kind.. I am the same way your.
I updated my OS to i9000xxjp3 (android 2.2)
Its amazingly fast there are bugs when you use Mobile AP (Hotspot), but this was working fine on i9000xxjp2 .. The official 2.2 is getting released on End of September.
And you can also try installing lot of application which is available on market.
The searching of application depends on how you use your mobile.
If you wanna be a developer you can do that easily.

U Tube Video : v=OxdZWhga0Vw
There are many application you can check out. Google them out on your chrome and send them directly to your mobile ..
tc..
Symbian OS took 38% market share worldwide in Q2 (41% year-on-year growth)
Android had 23% market share (884% year-on-year growth)
BlackBerry OS took 18% share (41% year-on-year growth)
iOS came in with 13% share (61% year-on-year growth)
As you can see there are 2x more Android devices then iphone devices world wide...and the growth is unparalleled...
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-sales-almost-900-q2
I've also read that Samsung is very happy with the Samsung Galaxy S, so much that the next major upgrade is going to be sometime in 3Q 2011. They are trying to do a yearly roadmap kinda like the iPhone. That's big for a company like Samsung that pretty much sh*ts fones left right and center.
For me I changed to the SGS from the 3G because I was sick of the way Steve Jobs thinks he can decide what apps and which websites I can visit (Flash!).
I liked the Iphone but in the end I felt it was to restrictive, all the apps I had on the Iphone I have now found in the market and a few that allow me to do things Apple told me I didn't need to do (GRRRR!).
I can now layout my own home screen with my own wallpaper and list today's appointments, which I could only do after jailbreaking the Iphone and even then it was limited.
My only issue with the SGS is the battery life, my 3G was better even after 18 months of usage.
Keep it. Samsung did an awesome job with this one and if they keep the Galaxy S as a whole series (like the iPhone) we'll see some big stuff coming from them. I think samsung is throwing the first stones in order to become the reference on Android smartphones.
On the other hand. If you really want games... Yeah, get an iPhone...

google normally does software though so im not so sure they would build a console anytime soon. some of the only hardware they "built" was the nexus one and that failed commercially.
Failed EPICALLY! I'm dropping my Evo for a winmo7 phone BUT only when the phone has a healthy amount of android roms on it like the hd2. I have the hd2 and surpisingly enough, NO sense rom (i've tried every single sense 2.2 rom for the evo on this site) runs as SMOOTHLY and as quickly as on the hd 2.
To get the speed of my hd 2 on my evo, I have to flash CM6. Kinda sad

I honestly don't see what Microsoft is trying to accomplish with windo 7 phones... What's the purpose of playing xbox 360 games on a cell phone?
Is it me, or does it make absolutely no sense... cell phone gaming is supposed to be casual and just a "spare time" kind of thing, not hardcore call of duty stuff...
If they really wanted to enter the cell phone scheme, then they are much better off teaming up with android or ios and working out some sort of collaboration, because in all honesty android and ios pretty much have it on lock. Their just isn't much room for another... Or they could have made a hand held like the PSP...
I will bite my tongue if windo 7 phones prove to be successful and if somehow Microsoft miraculously manages to get the phones battery to run even half a day....
Just my 2 cents. Please don't start bashing. I have been keeping up with windo 7 phones since they were announced a little over a year ago and I just wanted to get how stupid I think it was out of my system.......

If WM7 is as stable as Android, and has groundbreaking features id consider using it, but I have a feeling its just going to be a polished 6.5. I would like to see a WM7 port to the EVO just so I could try it out before I purchase a phone and be stuck with it for the next 4-6 months.
Also gaming phones didn't seem to make it in the past, like the N-guage and there was another phone I saw that had a ATI chip in it, but never went mainstream.

Windows Phone has a lot more going for it than just gaming.
First of all, gaming is definitely big. As a iPhone user I can see this. I don't even game much, but its hard to ignore the fact that the iPhone is slowly over taking mobile gaming share. MS with Xbox Live integration has a even better oppurtunity here.
Second, MS/WP 7 has the Zune software. Android sucks when it comes to media playback, so does blackberry, and even though I haven't used WebOS much, I'm lumping it in this sub par group as well. The iPhone/iPod is pretty much in another league, and the Zune software is as good or better than it.
Third, WP 7 has real and pretty good Office intergration. Might not be a big deal to you but it'll be big with business users. I don't have to deal with it much anymore but early on in my business I had a WM phone and I used excel all the time.
There's still a lot that needs to be improved but in a pool of similar OSs (Android/iOS/WebOS/Blackberry), WP feels different enough and offers enough for it to gain traction and serve a purpose.

It just annoys me that knowing Android phone having better GPU than iPhone while not having game that take advantage or UI hardware acceleration for the matter of fact.
Look at Rage HD released on iPhone/iPad Today, it simply looks amazing, and it ran well on iPad's last generation hardware. I believe the same game can run even better on Galaxy S phones; however, because of our freedom to install any application (ie. installable .apk -> Rampant piracy), many developers avoided Android market like fly's trap. (Gameloft comes to mind).
Anyways here's a short video by Gizmodo. Enjoy.

Edit: oh yeah, did I mention it was only $2 dollar?
Carmack has said they are working on Rage for Android next.
Yeah theyve already said they are making an Android version.
Graphics are amazing, but Im not really a fan of on-rails shooters.
Yeap thats one of the many reasons. I got like 8 hacked apk games my self! Plus apple has lots of support even through its not as open as android. Hope soon that changes. Because after playing a few 3d games on my vibrant I know how cool it would be to have a game like RageHD on android. One other reason is because there are way to many android devices with lots of different specs and that might be a big issue.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well...let me explain why this happens. The iPhone is great to develop for because there are essentially 3 devices (4 if you add iPad). This makes development and testing significantly easier and cheaper since you only have to support a very small number of devices. Apps that are iPhone4 or iPad only only have to be tested on a single device. For a game developer this is huge. This is why some great games only come out on Consoles and not PC's. Its because the developers don't have to test against dozens upon dozens of video cards, OS versions, screen sizes, RAM configurations, processors from multiple manufacturers. If you need to do some binary code for optimization, a single platform makes this simple.
All of this same stuff applies to Android phones. There are hundreds of different models, different screen sizes, OS versions, GPUs, Processors, Driver issues, etc etc. While app development may actually be easier on Android, its also much much harder to deliver a game experience across such a diverse platform.
Well if u like racing games check out Need For Speed Shift. Awesome game and looks and runs great!

No body speaks of piracy here, so I don't understand your point here.
I don't think Gameloft is withholding the games from the market strictly on piracy issues...

True, but that doesn't make it any harder for them to develop for iOS, and only a very small minority of iOS users jailbreak their phones. Android comes by default allowing installable APKs. That's a huge, factorable difference. It means people only need to do a Google search to pirate software (unless they're on AT&T).

To be honest I am considering grabbing a 4th gen ipod touch(if I can get one cheap enough) just to play some decent mobile games, it is just crazy that these companies(ALOT of the developers also develop on Android) havent released these titles for Android, I am a little peeved that we don't have some of these titles, I mean if the an iphone 3 can play Madden/Chaos Rings/Tomb Raider then our Evos are more than capable of running them. Well, I haven't gone on a rant on here in a while so I guess I'm done now, but seriously.....THESE COMPANIES NEED TO PULL THEIR HEADS OUT OF THEIR COLLECTIVE ASS, ANDROID HOLDS SOMETHING LIKE A 48% SHARE OF "SMARTPHONES" IN THE USA RIGHT NOW, IF THEY WANT MY MONEY THEN ITS TIME TO COME AND PLAY WITH GOOD OL' ANDY THE ANDROID
There, now I'm done
honestly its not just heads in asses and (sure i'm gonna get haters for this) but the apple market pays better than the android market. Android users just don't pay up like apple users. Are we cheap? Maybe but thats one of the main reasons why development is slow another reason is Android is a baby platform just barely learning to crawl although lately its been running. theres also that issue with the fragmentation on android games. don't get let down because Google has been damn good at taking on problems and the developers for android are rapidly increasing. keep your head up things will change soon enough.
and how much longer has the app store been around? Give it some time, Android will catch up. I know we live in a world of now now now, but think about where the android market was even 1 year ago.
it may just be me (don't yell at me, just my observation)
my 2nd gen ipod plays games way better than my Evo. i agree we need more quality games on android but it won't happen until the hardware improves.
the chip in my Shift seems to do ok, and with the new dual core phones coming it will only get better. i think once the number of devices out in the wild are capable of playing them, the developers will start writing more games for the platform.
one advantage to the iphone/ipod i guess is you know when you develop for one it will run on all of them (3rd gen up of course, which most people have) where as android is (i hate to use this term, again, don't yell at me) fragmented (hardware wise) some phones are just flat out not capable of gaming, and they know if they release games into the market, there will be people who don't read the requirments and then flip out when it doesn't run on their first gen G1.

Ding ding ding.
Android has done in one year, almost, what Apple has done in approaching four years.
People need to relax with the now now now attitude.
I mean jesus, at this rate it won't be long before Android passes the Istore.

Yeah I definitely agree with this. Actually I agree with the OP as well... I came from an iPhone awhile back when the original moto droid came out. I love Android because of how open it is... but the Apps suck. Everyone goes on and on about how many more apps there are for Android, and how most of them are free... but they SUCK... for the most part. I think Angry Birds being released on the Android platform was a huuuuuge step in the right direction though. Seriously... besides Angry Birds, show me one decent game that is comparable to an iGame. They dont compare... yet. But even so... I would never go back to an iPhone.
I myself would love to get into programming some more and start developing for Android.
But I agree that this will all get much better. We just gotta wait it out. And dont pirate paid apps... because that wont help with anything.

They will and then they will likely surpass it.
Just takes time and Google needs to improve the android system to support games including full hardware acceleration.
I think that people just expect way too much, even after the last year.
Think about it.
The last year was ridiculous for Android.
If you said a year ago that Android would have such a large percentage of the smart phone market share... or that it's Market would be closing in on the size of Apple [what is it 200,000 to 300,000 now?] people would call you crazy.
The amount of growth in the last year has just been ridiculous.
Of course, we can only hope for growth of that nature to continue but realistically, it wasn't even seen as possible last year.
We can hope for more apps and more improvements, as it benefits all Android users, but let's also not take for granted what has happened.

You bring up some good points.
Android over taking the iPhone in the US (keep in mind that the iPhone still has a decent lead internationally) has been big news over the last few days. Some people like to think that more users equals more games/apps but what they fail to realize is that a lot of these new Android users are at the bottom of the pyramid (free or very cheap phones), this brings an interesting dynamic that is different from the iPhone. For one, a lot of these users bought very incapable low priced Android phones; and two, these users bought a cheap phone and would probably be less likely to purchase games/apps anyway. Android is surpassing the iPhone in sales largely because of these low priced phones but this will also lead it to becoming a less attractive platform for developers.
Other factors that make purchasing less likely on Android:
- No wide adoption of carrier billing.
- Just my opinion, but I wouldn't be surprised if piracy is more popular with Android users.
Whatever the reasons, people just don't buy as much apps on Android. Angry Birds being an ad supported game on Android and a paid game on iOS is a testament to that. I'm also curious to see the long term returns on game advertising. They make a lot of money now but the mobile ad space hasn't stabilized yet and I fully expect the CPC to go way down as it does - how many accidental clicks must there have been? Had to be tons; and regardless, who wants to go to the browser in the middle of a game?
Then you ad the usual suspects HW and OS fragmentation, etc. Android has a uphill struggle to get developers (and especially game) committed to the platform.

Carrier billing does need to be added. across the board. [But being on one carrier for the last four years aids in have 100% carrier billing ]
But I'm not sure I fully agree with the rest of what you say.
Honestly, a lot of what you're saying is moreso true for a year ago than it is now.
-The "low end android phone" this year easily has the capabilities and hardware power of Iphone 3g or 3gs.
-Android "fragmentation" is a vastly over exaggerated point comparative to a year ago. http://www.androidcentral.com/sites...487/2011/01/thumb_550_AndroidOS_breakdown.PNG
Side note: do you have any data that proves, not just suggests, that android users buy apps less?
Android may have more users than iPhone now, but that has only been true for a little while.
So how fair is it to directly compare the two? [some kind of percentage comparison would be better]

Oh totally... because for an iPhone you have to be jailbroken to install an app not from the app store. Any android phone can side load a game. That's why it's so important not to pirate games.

Check out this link.... Angry Birds earns $1 Million per Month. They are still making tons of money but ad-supported games are definitely not the way to go. I wish they'd release a paid version. I'd pay for it.

$1 million dollars a month from a silly game is pretty damned good.
Also, you're free to donate to any developer you want.

I can play Mortal Kombat 3, Legend Of Zelda:Link To The Past and Super Metroid. Do these count? Awesome games can be played on the EVO, you just have to know where to look BTW - I don't understand the fascination with hardcore gaming on a Phone. Even thou I have these games on my EVO, I have only played MK3, and that's just a few times. If I am at the Dentist (or comparable office), I just play Angry Birds or Jewel Lust just to pass the time. If I want to play a real mobile game I just bring my PSP or DSiXL with me. These games eat up the battery on a phone rather quickly.
Wow, for a little rant we seem to have good info and opinions here
Great points all around, I do realize how young the platform is and I also realize we have hardware/software fragmentation issues, I know we are getting there it was just a bit frustrating to see that this morning(think it was the coffee kicking in). It was said that Android users aren't the best of consumers at times, and I agree, BUT I can say that since I became an Android user and involved with XDA I have come to appreciate the value of software releases(game or app or LWP), I now know what goes into them and I honestly don't mind paying. Well, again great points made by everyone, one last thing... I have been following CES pretty close this year and with the hardware being stepped up exponentially by manufacturers and Google still churning out better and better software I gotta say I see 2011 being a good year for us

While I agree with you that games are way better on the iphone/ipod, I have to say that when I found out that Doodle Jump was available on Android, I knew it was okay to get the Evo. I think that was the first step. Angry Birds is the second step. The third step would be to allow Android phones to play Scrabble with iPhones (with the iPad as the Scrabble board).
Also, iphone users like my Alchemy and Alchemy Classic games but they can't play them.
Personally I couldnt give a rats ass about this update lol all ure gonna get is a few minor graphical changes and performance tweaks. All I want is for the playstation suite stores to open finally in my area.

I like the part where you clearly have no idea what you're on about.
Call me crazy, but I can't get that worked up about an OS.
The Xperia Play remains the device I've always dreamed of carrying with me, ever since I first saw the PSP and wished it could fit in a pocket and make calls and texts. If you'd have told me that device would one day stop getting official OS updates, I would hardly have been shocked or put off it. If you'd have told me the manufacturer released its latest beta freely and remained supportive of unofficial development (I know part of the thanks to that is Android), I'd have been impressed.
I have friends with Galaxy Notes and S2s and they see my gamepad, and freaking ZELDA on N64oid, and their eyes light up. It's a really, really cool device. Not that I hate their phones or anything, but I wouldn't swap. Hell I wouldn't swap for a Galaxy S3 or HTC One X or whatever the latest is currently. Now they may be the dream devices for some people here, but for me it would be as exciting as swapping a PS3 for an ironing board. If I didn't think that buttons are an essential for making games fun, I'd buy an iPhone, seriously. Much as I prefer the open nature of Android, iOS has many more apps.
90% of Play owners out there do not have root or an unlocked bootloader. They are not as technical as posters on XDA, and would not have been expecting game buttons to go wrong. It would have been a support nightmare for Sony to have let those people upgrade if there were going to be issues. For the rest of us, we can flash the beta / whatever dev roms we want. What I mainly liked about the ICS beta was the hardware accelerated browsing. But if Gingerbread ends up being the way to go, then I'll just use Opera for that. Nothing else on a generic gamepad-less ICS phone would really hold a candle to playing console games with buttons whereever I want.
I'm much more pissed off at EA for not making our optimised exclusives, FIFA and Dead Space, available in the UK for people who were too late for that deal, even to buy.
Its a phone im getting sick of tinkering with it....i just wanna play my games, text my *****es and occasionly call my parents and tell them im alive...ics pfft.

I find the part where you say that OP has no idea what hes on about to be worthy of a good ol fashioned facepalm.
ICS is pretty much all OP says it is. Graphical and Performance tweaks. Swipe off notifications (pointless as I have a handy little cross on Gingerbread that removes notifications anyway), Swipe task killer (not as amazing as it sounds as I have a better way...close the app properly) and some browser related stuff like hardware accelerated browsing and swipe off tabs (again, just open up tabs and click the little cross in the corner)
Almost everything on ICS is there to save you a whole, get this, few seconds. More often than not you dont end up swiping a particular notification/app/tab off and end up opening it instead.

On ICS, with N64oid you can use the gamepad touchpads.
(but atm, N64oid with ICS is still laggy ...)
Its true that we dont need it. But like my self i bought the phone since i have in mind buying an ICS but didnt wanted to spend $600 or more in it.
I own an ICS tablet and its the first android that doesnt need tweeks or that i find no use of a custom rom to make it work the way i like.
Do i need ICS on my xperia play?
Yes, please.

I love the part where you think you do. Do me a favor, how about you buy a different brand of phone so you can realize that Sony is actually just as good, if not better at supporting their devices than HTC, Motorola, Samsung, [insert name here].
Better yet, skip a step and just buy a ****ing iPhone. It will compliment your douchiness nicely.
I dont need it, and I'm getting a Hayabusa when it launches locally.
I have a Xoom with 4.0.4 ICS and I don't see why everyone is making such a big fuss.
However, I would have liked to see Sony push out one more GB update for the play with updated Qualcomm drivers, updated Sony apps and maybe improved Web browser.
Im just saying its really not worth the fuss lol who cares what I want is what I was promised ps suite isnt this supposed to be a sweet ass gaming phone with a tit load of games ? I LOOOVE my emulators and the small library of optimised games and psxperia emu sony sure did **** the bed with this phone it could have been so much more!!! Still it is a TON of fun
