Hi guys,
Need some advise, i have had the SGS for around a month, the hardware is great and the screen quality is awesome, but the problem is lack of development support.
During the time i have had this device, probably 3 decent games (psx4droid, skies of glory and hyper jump) have been released, the rest have been released in the past.
No more than 5 useful applications have been released.
Not many of the Market apps are useful and most are spam.
I am thinking of switching to the iOS4, the development off apps there is far better and hundreds of new applications are released there.
Dont take this as a troll comment, i like the SGS, its just i dont like the lack of support.
Advise? Thanks.

What advice are you looking for? The android market is growing dramatically every day, you've had the phone for only a month and in that time, 3 great games have come out? What are you complaining about?
What "useful" apps do you expect to find for the iPhone that is not available for android? If I was looking for portable gaming I'd buy a PSP...

If you can afford the iPhone apps why not. I feel iOS4 is great. Not that great compared to Android though. I need openness and customisability. I need an mkv and ogg player. I need something that truly multi tasks.
And I dislike iTunes a lot.

No amount of great hardware or customization is going to make up for critical applications or games that you want.
I have an iPhone 3GS right now. I'm thoroughly unhappy with a lot of parts of the iPhone. I don't like that it's closed, I don't like major missing applications especially Google apps, I hate iTunes, I want real multi-tasking, I'm sick of fighting with jailbreaks... the list goes on.
That said, I am tentative about the move because a few apps are still missing for me. Games, I am not so worried about - I'm not much of a phone gamer. Right now, though, the negatives about my iPhone outweigh the few apps that are missing so it's time for me to switch.
You may be experiencing the opposite problem. That's completely a personal decision. I'd say, if you're a gamer, there is no better platform than the iPhone. There are really great games for it, more coming out all the time. It is absolutely the best mobile gaming platform out right now.
So do it. Life is too short to worry about stuff like this. If Android isn't meeting your needs, switch and be happy.
Me, I'm switching because I don't like the iPhone as a daily pocket device anymore. I'm keeping it to use at home, though, for the games and apps that don't exist on the Android platform.

If you are after mainly games then yes get an iphone, android is still a way behind in this area and might still take some time to catch up, while developers are slowly moving to android they are really still just testing the waters with android I feel and many games ported to android are either missing features or far more buggy than their iphone versions.
I am sure this will change as android keeps growing in popularity but if you want lots of games now then obviously the iphone is better in that area.

Yep. I don't understand the need to have other people convince you that you want to stay on Android.
Just go to iPhone if you feel that suits your needs.
Most useful apps that are on the iPhone are on Android...if anything they did a recent study and found there are more developers on Android then there for the iPhone....
But there are 2 things to consider..
1) iPhone has a lot of useless apps that do the same thing
2) Not all apps are always in the market place..for example EA games has quite a few games but for some reason keeps them hidden..but you can buy them if you want to directly...same for Gameloft and many other publishers..
Either way Android is growing quite fast and will continue to grow...as of 2010 I have yet to see 1 major developer do something for the iphone and not for Android..
Dear azazin,
I liked the way you said. You want something to explore rite ?
Your my kind.. I am the same way your.
I updated my OS to i9000xxjp3 (android 2.2)
Its amazingly fast there are bugs when you use Mobile AP (Hotspot), but this was working fine on i9000xxjp2 .. The official 2.2 is getting released on End of September.
And you can also try installing lot of application which is available on market.
The searching of application depends on how you use your mobile.
If you wanna be a developer you can do that easily.

There are games like Many and they are awesome.. !! Seriously 3d HD games are coming 2 our SGS ...
U Tube Video : v=OxdZWhga0Vw
There are many application you can check out. Google them out on your chrome and send them directly to your mobile ..
tc..
Symbian OS took 38% market share worldwide in Q2 (41% year-on-year growth)
Android had 23% market share (884% year-on-year growth)
BlackBerry OS took 18% share (41% year-on-year growth)
iOS came in with 13% share (61% year-on-year growth)
As you can see there are 2x more Android devices then iphone devices world wide...and the growth is unparalleled...
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-sales-almost-900-q2
I've also read that Samsung is very happy with the Samsung Galaxy S, so much that the next major upgrade is going to be sometime in 3Q 2011. They are trying to do a yearly roadmap kinda like the iPhone. That's big for a company like Samsung that pretty much sh*ts fones left right and center.
For me I changed to the SGS from the 3G because I was sick of the way Steve Jobs thinks he can decide what apps and which websites I can visit (Flash!).
I liked the Iphone but in the end I felt it was to restrictive, all the apps I had on the Iphone I have now found in the market and a few that allow me to do things Apple told me I didn't need to do (GRRRR!).
I can now layout my own home screen with my own wallpaper and list today's appointments, which I could only do after jailbreaking the Iphone and even then it was limited.
My only issue with the SGS is the battery life, my 3G was better even after 18 months of usage.
Keep it. Samsung did an awesome job with this one and if they keep the Galaxy S as a whole series (like the iPhone) we'll see some big stuff coming from them. I think samsung is throwing the first stones in order to become the reference on Android smartphones.
On the other hand. If you really want games... Yeah, get an iPhone...

It just annoys me that knowing Android phone having better GPU than iPhone while not having game that take advantage or UI hardware acceleration for the matter of fact.
Look at Rage HD released on iPhone/iPad Today, it simply looks amazing, and it ran well on iPad's last generation hardware. I believe the same game can run even better on Galaxy S phones; however, because of our freedom to install any application (ie. installable .apk -> Rampant piracy), many developers avoided Android market like fly's trap. (Gameloft comes to mind).
Anyways here's a short video by Gizmodo. Enjoy.

Edit: oh yeah, did I mention it was only $2 dollar?
Carmack has said they are working on Rage for Android next.
Yeah theyve already said they are making an Android version.
Graphics are amazing, but Im not really a fan of on-rails shooters.
Yeap thats one of the many reasons. I got like 8 hacked apk games my self! Plus apple has lots of support even through its not as open as android. Hope soon that changes. Because after playing a few 3d games on my vibrant I know how cool it would be to have a game like RageHD on android. One other reason is because there are way to many android devices with lots of different specs and that might be a big issue.

Well...let me explain why this happens. The iPhone is great to develop for because there are essentially 3 devices (4 if you add iPad). This makes development and testing significantly easier and cheaper since you only have to support a very small number of devices. Apps that are iPhone4 or iPad only only have to be tested on a single device. For a game developer this is huge. This is why some great games only come out on Consoles and not PC's. Its because the developers don't have to test against dozens upon dozens of video cards, OS versions, screen sizes, RAM configurations, processors from multiple manufacturers. If you need to do some binary code for optimization, a single platform makes this simple.
All of this same stuff applies to Android phones. There are hundreds of different models, different screen sizes, OS versions, GPUs, Processors, Driver issues, etc etc. While app development may actually be easier on Android, its also much much harder to deliver a game experience across such a diverse platform.
Well if u like racing games check out Need For Speed Shift. Awesome game and looks and runs great!

No body speaks of piracy here, so I don't understand your point here.
I don't think Gameloft is withholding the games from the market strictly on piracy issues...
This game seems cool the graphics are awesome...but it not being for android reminds me of how much I want Pocket God for android.
I've been playing Hawx and Asphalt and I'm pretty impressed. I'm not really a gamer so ymmv.

True, but that doesn't make it any harder for them to develop for iOS, and only a very small minority of iOS users jailbreak their phones. Android comes by default allowing installable APKs. That's a huge, factorable difference. It means people only need to do a Google search to pirate software (unless they're on AT&T).

Ok so i have had the fascinate for a while. I switched to Verizon because they have the best service in my area. I was on ATT with Iphone before.
The phone feels cheap but a great screen
It feels smooth when useing the apps but horribly slow when using the UI itself.
99% of the market is themes and ringtones.
No new games all are ports and old games that I had on the iphone a year ago.
The UI is ugly to me unless I use Launcherpro then it gets Nice. There are no Good scrollable widgets in the market at all. So far without Launcherpro widgets would be pointless!
The GPS lock time is horrible (Yes I know theres a fix coming, which some say realy does nothing)
Ive used some of the roms with kernels in clockwork mod... honestly I see no Improvment compared to Launcherpro... touchwiz sux.
I love the hardware of this phone...except the plastic feel. But coming from a Iphone i can say It just doesnt compare. Push notification apps are rare on android.
I know this is the best option ...only option on Verizon. But I do miss my JAILBROKEN IPHONE. With a jailbroken iphone I was able to do so much more. better theming, skins , even widgets.
Just my thoughts. I expected so much more from Google.

If you don't like it, I saw that the iPhone is on sale, you could probably get a new one. GPS is fixed, just not in an official update, but it most certainly is working. And games will come, it will just take some time. Gingerbread should help significantly, as well as the growth that the Android platform has experienced the past year.

You are completely entitled to your own opinion. I just wish people didn't share them on a development site. Go to cnet or something.
good day.
I'm starting to not like this thing either. As a phone with it's basic functions, it does fine, but dammit, there is an almost TOTAL lack of attention to this thing from the dev community, which tells ME no geeks bought it.
Back when I had my TP2, there was a ton of custom roms, and constant development that made that thing very capable.
I think you can even run Froyo on a TP2 now.

there is plenty of development going on for this phone..however its not currently here on xda
Atleast im not the only that feel this way. I thought I was missing something. I played with my friends Incredible .. I liked the UI almost the same as my Launcherpro add on.... but it looked better with a few more options....but it was slower than launcherpro.
As far as Apps well I think its going to be like that Untill Google stops the fragmentation. They should force Manufactures to update All phones in a timely manner atleast for 1 year
Ill give it till January and see if any other options are available. I love GOOGLE but Im not loving Android anymore. I think the thought of openess was a great idea. But Its lacking with developers wanting to make cool apps.
Like I said in January Ill see where Android is at. If its not moving foward in the DEV/MARKET area ill get a windows mobile or Iphone.
Thanks guys!!
Android is the platform that recent surveys have shown will receive the most new development. More so than iPhone/iPad and Windows Phone. I don't think it has to do with fragmentation so much as it takes time to realize where the market is going.
Just 6 months ago, there were only a handful of Android devices out there, and most weren't exactly powerful devices that could do gaming and many other things. Because of that, software companies put their money and time into making games for the iPhone as it could handle games better than the Android phones of the time. Given the lead time in creating a game or some of the complex apps out there, places probably only started on them recently.
Android didn't really take off until this past summer, at least not in a mass market way. There were rumored updates to devices, but no one knew how they would do where the iOS platform had a 3+ year history. Now that Android has taken off, companies are playing catch up.
I just decided to return the phone. Ill wait it out till january and see what is announced.
Just not enough good Applications to warrant being stuck on this OS. If things change maybe ill revisit it again.
Thanks guys and Goodluck.

That is really, really cool.
Could come in handy on my trips to Montreal, although there's plenty of English up there, I will no longer need the English menu at a restaurant!
Hope they create one for Android and also support more languages ( I think just Spanish/English right now )
Aw man... yea thats pretty hot.
Get an Iphone, if you dont want one then wait a little, and like most Iphone apps they will find their way to the fastest growing OS out there right now.
Yea I just hope its not at the slow pace we usually have to wait. There are still some apps that they have on IOS that we dont have yet so I just bought and jailbroke an itouch 4 gen and use my evo as a hotspot. Kinda like with the netflix thing... bad thing about IOS is its just one OS a year... good thing is it makes it a lot easier for devs to code for it without having to make sure its compatible for a lot of different versions.
Hope it get's ported to android
The reason its one OS a year its cause its one phone a year, and that what apples head honcho tries to bad talk Android because of fragmentation, basically meaning so many diff versions of OS's on so many devices that not all android apps are compatible, so he thinks his one device for everybody model is better than Android's choose the right device for you model, Go figure.
Well im pro choice, but in terms of developers from what I see they tend to agree. It's easier for them to make an app that just works for IOS 4 as compared to making an app thats compatible with Android 1.6, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. Not to mention they have to take account for things like processor speed, etc. That's one of the main reasons they will pretty much always get the major apps before we do.
I prefer Android as an OS over IOS.. and ive had an iphone before but app wise thats one thing I was kinda spoiled about when I made the switch.
I agree with you, but with now more Android phones out there than OS Im sure devs will work a little harder to get into the bigger market, cause they aint ganna leave all that money out there for someone else to take thats for sure.
Google Goggles does this minus the augmented reality.
Been playing with it and it's pretty cool. Translations are kind of goofy but still okay. Overall a cool app to show off but Goggles is better for actual use.
The app is free but each language pack is going to start at five bucks apiece, then ten bucks after the first of the year.
-Not worth the money-
Google translate does a fine job of translating words, has loads of languages, and it's free. So you don't get the geek factor of taking a pic to get a translation, but typing the characters will always beat OCR accuracy-wise, don't you guys think?

iOS outnumbers Android by something like 5:1. Even if you do only phones it's like 3:1, Android has marginally surpassed the iPhone in sales per month but the iPhone (not mention iTouch/iPad) has a massive install base.

this assumes there are no people out there with older iPhones. except there are. and sometimes apps for the new version won't work for them.

I've been here for a while with my Inc, and even though I haven't really contributed a lot, I'd like to say thanks to all the people who have helped me through the modding adventure. I learned a lot, and even helped some friends with it. I've grown bored with the OS, though; I'm moving to a 4S so I can be less tempted to make minor changes and more able to enjoy everything. (I'll still jailbreak it, of course.) I'd just like to remind everyone that both options are equally awesome, albeit in different ways, and that there are some of us out here who enjoy both.

I'm more buying into an OS other than Android. I've pretty much done everything I'd like to with Android; I've installed tons of roms and tweaks, but nothing gets around that it's all still the same OS. I figure I'll switch over to iOS to enjoy the better app selection and other features, then switch back to Android in a year or two so whatever enhancements made over that time will make it seem fresh to me. I'm not trying to incite flaming here by any means. I'm just offering my opinion and trying to show that there are, in fact, people out there who enjoy the benefits of any type of phone, regardless of brand loyalty.

They had better app selection in 2009, maybe early 2010. In late 2011.. no, plus android has a slew of mini-app-tweaks that Apple would ban if they ever entered their appstore.
I think iPhones are great too, but for non-techsavvy type people. Grandma's, my mom, etc. People who don't know how to really customize their android phone. Android's without customization have bloatware, turd settings, often sluggish, they're just pretty turdly all around. I didn't really love my phone until I rooted it and customized it.
I also like the build of iPhones compared with the majority of Android devices. Anyway personally, I think you'll regret your choice after a few weeks or until you realize all the things iPhone can't do.
I'm right there with you OP. I pre-ordered my 4S the other day. Android has been great (well, cyanogenmod at least) but I don't have the time to install roms anymore to figure out which I like best and I can't handle the bugs in the existing roms. It'll be nice to have a phone that doesn't randomly reboot or activate speakerphone for a change. And I'm tired of carrying around 2 devices for my music/phone. I don't have brand bias, I just know what I need in a phone, and that's consistency.

Yeah I never got that argument. I think in some ways it shows brand bias. Best purchase I made in the last couple of years was some software that stripped the drm off my iTunes music.
You're right, my Inc has a music player. But it doesn't sync with itunes, my ipod dock, or my car. Nor does it have the accessory support that iphone has. The one thing I will miss is native google turn by turn navigation. I'll definitely enjoy the better battery life! That's the one thing that kept me from jumping to an LTE phone instead. But I have enjoyed the community here and some of the hard work a few of the devs have put in.
This thread should have never been created and should be closed. You guys are just gonna set here and go back and forth at each other.
This isn't an Apple discussion sub category.
Let's get back to Android development for our Incredible.
i have a hard time understanding one thing. everyone who is an ios fan keeps touting the app selection over android.
then i ask them - is angry birds free?

then i ask them - what are these great apps not available on android?
/one reply - infinity blade
then i ask them - have u ever used easy tether? played a real mmo on ur pc using just ur phone to get internet while camping?

the only thing magical about ios is its ability to make people believe it can do more than it does.
"But it doesn't sync with itunes, my ipod dock, or my car."
sure it does. research it. there's apps that do it for free, or apps you can pay for.

It would seem that an developer (or team of) has started taking in pledges from users who wish to see OpenWebOS on their device.
I was shocked to see that the SGSII hasn't had any support thus far. So hit up that link and sound off if you wish to see OWOS on our devices.
I for one miss the hell out of WebOS from my Pre days and would much prefer to have it running on my Galaxy SII than Android.

WebOS is a fantastic platform. it would completely outclass Android on our devices, (i owned a Pre, loved it but it was a bit shoddy and the sgsII would be a much better candidate).
Great user experience, great social integration, intuitive non intrusive notifications, looks pretty, childishly easy to develop for (as long as you dont mind working with Javascript) and last but not least (probably the most important thing for the XDA community) its hackable beyond comprehension with a ton of room to improve performance, change UI behaviour, theme and extend.
I think it would be a fun challenge and something that the XDA community can get behind

Do we have nice apps for WebOS? Otherwise it's useless.
Nevertheless, I've voted
Yes we do, you have both the apps in the official app catalog and then you have a wealth of applications, patches and utilities in the open source homebrew package manager Preware.
I didn't have to trawl forums for kerenls and patches to flash, i could just install them from preware and reboot and voila, my 600Mhz pre was running at 1.2Ghz or my icons where 6x6 instead of 4x4 in the launcher.
In terms of proper app apps, you have tons of twitter clients, books, readers, flashlights, facebook clients, chat apps, iRC clients, navigation apps, music and video players (some of them really really awesome) and more!
I miss Palm
p.s WebOS also had flash support for those who think it matter (i dont, dont even have it installed on my device)
If I had to chose only one I think Firefox OS is a better choice

I'd happily vote, if I had the 10 posts needed XD. I loved my unbrickable pre plus. WebOS 2.1 ran brilliantly for the specs it had to make do with, and I'd guess that if webos got running on the s2 properly, it'd make android look slow. Really slow.
It just needs apps, and a hell of a lot of love and new features.
Shame that the s2 doesn't have the capacative touch area the pre plus and newer phones had.

Voted, maybe this will allow webos to shine on hardware it could and should have been on!
