Getting a 4S. Thanks for all the help! - Droid Incredible General

I've been here for a while with my Inc, and even though I haven't really contributed a lot, I'd like to say thanks to all the people who have helped me through the modding adventure. I learned a lot, and even helped some friends with it. I've grown bored with the OS, though; I'm moving to a 4S so I can be less tempted to make minor changes and more able to enjoy everything. (I'll still jailbreak it, of course.) I'd just like to remind everyone that both options are equally awesome, albeit in different ways, and that there are some of us out here who enjoy both.

Enjoy dual core 3G. I'll let you know how LTE is on a dual core phone.

so, basically, you're buying into exactly what apple is selling: a locked down OS. gotcha. hey man, if that's for you and android is too complicated for ya, then so be it. enjoy your slightly upgraded iphone 4!

Coming from an Inc (or any 2010 Android phone for that matter) I would say that's a huge upgrade in regards to out the box performance.

I'm waiting until LTE becomes available in more areas and is more battery efficient.

I'm more buying into an OS other than Android. I've pretty much done everything I'd like to with Android; I've installed tons of roms and tweaks, but nothing gets around that it's all still the same OS. I figure I'll switch over to iOS to enjoy the better app selection and other features, then switch back to Android in a year or two so whatever enhancements made over that time will make it seem fresh to me. I'm not trying to incite flaming here by any means. I'm just offering my opinion and trying to show that there are, in fact, people out there who enjoy the benefits of any type of phone, regardless of brand loyalty.

They had better app selection in 2009, maybe early 2010. In late 2011.. no, plus android has a slew of mini-app-tweaks that Apple would ban if they ever entered their appstore.
I think iPhones are great too, but for non-techsavvy type people. Grandma's, my mom, etc. People who don't know how to really customize their android phone. Android's without customization have bloatware, turd settings, often sluggish, they're just pretty turdly all around. I didn't really love my phone until I rooted it and customized it.
I also like the build of iPhones compared with the majority of Android devices. Anyway personally, I think you'll regret your choice after a few weeks or until you realize all the things iPhone can't do.

I'm right there with you OP. I pre-ordered my 4S the other day. Android has been great (well, cyanogenmod at least) but I don't have the time to install roms anymore to figure out which I like best and I can't handle the bugs in the existing roms. It'll be nice to have a phone that doesn't randomly reboot or activate speakerphone for a change. And I'm tired of carrying around 2 devices for my music/phone. I don't have brand bias, I just know what I need in a phone, and that's consistency.

Yeah I never got that argument. I think in some ways it shows brand bias. Best purchase I made in the last couple of years was some software that stripped the drm off my iTunes music.

You're right, my Inc has a music player. But it doesn't sync with itunes, my ipod dock, or my car. Nor does it have the accessory support that iphone has. The one thing I will miss is native google turn by turn navigation. I'll definitely enjoy the better battery life! That's the one thing that kept me from jumping to an LTE phone instead. But I have enjoyed the community here and some of the hard work a few of the devs have put in.

This thread should have never been created and should be closed. You guys are just gonna set here and go back and forth at each other.
This isn't an Apple discussion sub category.
Let's get back to Android development for our Incredible.

i have a hard time understanding one thing. everyone who is an ios fan keeps touting the app selection over android.
then i ask them - is angry birds free?
/sadface
then i ask them - what are these great apps not available on android?
/one reply - infinity blade
then i ask them - have u ever used easy tether? played a real mmo on ur pc using just ur phone to get internet while camping?
/sadface
the only thing magical about ios is its ability to make people believe it can do more than it does.

"But it doesn't sync with itunes, my ipod dock, or my car."
sure it does. research it. there's apps that do it for free, or apps you can pay for.

New Verizon and the Fascinate...my thoughts!

Ok so i have had the fascinate for a while. I switched to Verizon because they have the best service in my area. I was on ATT with Iphone before.
The phone feels cheap but a great screen
It feels smooth when useing the apps but horribly slow when using the UI itself.
99% of the market is themes and ringtones.
No new games all are ports and old games that I had on the iphone a year ago.
The UI is ugly to me unless I use Launcherpro then it gets Nice. There are no Good scrollable widgets in the market at all. So far without Launcherpro widgets would be pointless!
The GPS lock time is horrible (Yes I know theres a fix coming, which some say realy does nothing)
Ive used some of the roms with kernels in clockwork mod... honestly I see no Improvment compared to Launcherpro... touchwiz sux.
I love the hardware of this phone...except the plastic feel. But coming from a Iphone i can say It just doesnt compare. Push notification apps are rare on android.
I know this is the best option ...only option on Verizon. But I do miss my JAILBROKEN IPHONE. With a jailbroken iphone I was able to do so much more. better theming, skins , even widgets.
Just my thoughts. I expected so much more from Google.

Please go get Another Iphone
If you don't like it, I saw that the iPhone is on sale, you could probably get a new one. GPS is fixed, just not in an official update, but it most certainly is working. And games will come, it will just take some time. Gingerbread should help significantly, as well as the growth that the Android platform has experienced the past year.

You are completely entitled to your own opinion. I just wish people didn't share them on a development site. Go to cnet or something.
good day.
I'm starting to not like this thing either. As a phone with it's basic functions, it does fine, but dammit, there is an almost TOTAL lack of attention to this thing from the dev community, which tells ME no geeks bought it.
Back when I had my TP2, there was a ton of custom roms, and constant development that made that thing very capable.
I think you can even run Froyo on a TP2 now.
F*ck me this thing sucks.

there is plenty of development going on for this phone..however its not currently here on xda
Atleast im not the only that feel this way. I thought I was missing something. I played with my friends Incredible .. I liked the UI almost the same as my Launcherpro add on.... but it looked better with a few more options....but it was slower than launcherpro.
As far as Apps well I think its going to be like that Untill Google stops the fragmentation. They should force Manufactures to update All phones in a timely manner atleast for 1 year
Ill give it till January and see if any other options are available. I love GOOGLE but Im not loving Android anymore. I think the thought of openess was a great idea. But Its lacking with developers wanting to make cool apps.
Like I said in January Ill see where Android is at. If its not moving foward in the DEV/MARKET area ill get a windows mobile or Iphone.
Thanks guys!!
Android is the platform that recent surveys have shown will receive the most new development. More so than iPhone/iPad and Windows Phone. I don't think it has to do with fragmentation so much as it takes time to realize where the market is going.
Just 6 months ago, there were only a handful of Android devices out there, and most weren't exactly powerful devices that could do gaming and many other things. Because of that, software companies put their money and time into making games for the iPhone as it could handle games better than the Android phones of the time. Given the lead time in creating a game or some of the complex apps out there, places probably only started on them recently.
Android didn't really take off until this past summer, at least not in a mass market way. There were rumored updates to devices, but no one knew how they would do where the iOS platform had a 3+ year history. Now that Android has taken off, companies are playing catch up.
I just decided to return the phone. Ill wait it out till january and see what is announced.
Just not enough good Applications to warrant being stuck on this OS. If things change maybe ill revisit it again.
Thanks guys and Goodluck.

New to Atrix

Hello!
I just got the Atrix on Saturday. I've upgraded from the iPhone 3GS and I couldn't be happier. The Atrix just feels more free overall.
This is my first open-source phone and I hope I can only say good things about it by the time my contract is up and its time to upgrade.
Speed is excellent, it feels so snappy and quick.
I rooted my Atrix a few hours after purchasing it, installed Titanium Backup Pro and froze some of the stock apps.
When I first got the phone, I was actually disappointed by the dl/ul speeds I was receiving, but that didn't deter me. Today, their was a SBF Mod which unlocks HSPA's radio and now it FLIES.
I love my new phone.
Just thought I'd share my experiences with everyone!
Its great that you are enjoying the phone. Its always nice to hear good things about the Atrix, it was pretty negative around here for a while. Especially nice to hear from an iPhone convert .

Thanks,
I was going to wait out and be an Apple fanboy for the iPhone 5 but I couldn't stand the 3GS and its slowness anymore.
Remembered that my contract was up in a few days, I stopped by the AT&T Store and started playing with it. I was hooked.
Don't forget to install gingerblur or greyblur. I switched from the 3Gs too. The only thing I can say I genuinely miss is having a polished version of monopoly.
I have a 3GS, I just can't figure out if I should wait and see what competes with the iPhone 5 or just get the Atrix now. I'm also thinking about waiting for the Galaxy S ii but who knows when that'll come.
Too many choices!
Iphone is just plain slow. And I come to figure out simple people that can't learn how to use a monster device made on android shun it cause their to stupid to learn it so they revert back to thiet "apple" is better mindframe.

I don't find the Atrix that sexy. I don't like motoblur, the position of the power button, and the low-end camera. I wish at&t was more open to Android devices.
I really want my next phone to be an Android phone, but at&t makes that really tough.

Not up to me on the carrier. It's up to my dad. I don't mind at&t. I've been on at&t since I had my first cellphone back when it was still Cingular.
I just wish there were some better devices, but I'm sure I'd still be happy with the Atrix.
Well android or droi is new to at&t id bet in a cpl months there will be alot more to choose from. Hang in there.

Haha, i must say i miss the 3GS but only for the look of it. I had one of them back in the day, had some rubber case on it and it would always make me smile when i took that case off and saw how shiney the back was. I know it's a stupid thing to like a phone for, but i like the shineyness!!
Good move going to the atrix, while it seems like it's a hibernating bear when it wakes up with gingerbread it's going to be boss level.

I haven't heard of any new ones coming to at&t other than potentially possibly probably the Galaxy S II. I don't know what to do
I was an iPhone owner and I have to admit the phone was awesome when it came out.... I switched over to android though and am just blown away with the OS. That's just my opinion though.
I've been happy with the Atrix.... locked bootloader sucks though. other mods like hdmi hack, mirroring, etc. have kept me entertained for the meanwhile.

I think anyone who has gone from an iPhone to an Android has realized how much more useful a smartphone can be when you have more control over what you can change.
I went from a iphone 1 to the Atrix. Needless to say, I am blown away. It's so fast and smooth. I installed gingerblur and it feels even better now. I love being able to do things to my phone like I did with my PSP and computer. Never going back to apple.

A bootloader is a code that is read before an OS starts to run. All Operating systems such asPC, laptop, smartphones, etc. have bootloaders. Bootloaders package the instructions to boot OS kernel
a locked bootloader means it is impossible (at the moment until unlocked) to flash a Custom ROM so we are stuck with pseudo-roms. Meaning we cannot fully customize our phones.
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to install custom Firmware on your Android phone

before i jump ship

1. Dude Android has several phones with a camera better than the iPhone and have you not seen the One X's camera?
2. Rooting is not a necessity, it just makes the experience better. You could make the same exact argument for jailbreaking
3. You get a little more battery at the expense of power and multitasking
4. Implying Android does not have developers that are just as dedicated? I assure you the Play Store will eventually surpass the Apple App Store considering Android already accounts for more than half of the smartphone market share.
So yeah, have fun with your device OP

I personally would either get the Nexus or wait a bit for the EVO LTE before getting the iPhone.
Well i hope you're not using your upgrade to jump ship to the iphone 4s. If so just wait for the evo4g lte. Sense 4.0 And if not sell your evo and use the money you would have spent on the iphone 4s and once again...use it to purchase the E4GLTE.

No one is hurt. It was a thread that made no sense. Not to mention that iOS is the "enemy" of Android, so there is going to be some hard feelings when someone talks about jumping ship. If you go on a Pepsi forum and talk about Coke, you shouldn't expect anything less than some heat. It doesn't qualify as "trolling."
If you want Sense 4.0 real bad, you buy a Sense 4.0 phone, seeing as one is coming out right now. Why "jump ship" if there is no Sense 4.0 for our EVO 4G when you can get the legitimate version?
Secondarily, people SHOULD balk at the fact that someone is going from Android to iOS, because most people seem uninformed about iOS and think it is great when it indeed is not. Although the thread came off as bashing, it is actually nice that people went out of their way to try and stop the purchase of an overpriced, overhyped phone. If you compare the two tit for tat, no one would buy an iPhone over the 4G LTE. It is a poor shopping choice. So take it as a compliment that people are trying to help you out I guess.

How is it bashing? I don't particularly like sense. I just wanted to see what Sense 4 is about but, not enough to commit to buying a new phone. I'm not saying the LTEVO won't be great, because my EVO was great to me. Now to all the others that talk about battery being bad on the iphone, I know that's a lie...I've had experience with ios and I know the battery last MUCH longer than any android device I've owned.
I'm done with customizing and flashing ROMs almost 2 or 3 times a week...but thanks for feedback

Would you sell your GS3 for a WP8 phone?

I'm wondering if its worth hanging on to my ATT GSIII phone and starting a whole new 2 year contract or if I should return it and wait for the Windows phone 8 to come out. Personally, I'm bored as hell from iphones and Android just never seems to be quiet there yet. After seeing the demo of WP8, it really got me interested. It basically takes the best of iOS and Android and mixes it all in a fresh new package.
I still got 3 weeks to return mines to the AT&T store, is anyone else here considering switching to a WP8 phone? I'm also interested to see what the new iphone looks like too. One thing that pisses me off about Android are that the iOS apps always look way way better than Android, Google really needs to start putting in some standards with these developers. I still can't play many of the Gameloft and EA games on this phone that I've purchased a while back.
Its all advertisement nothing elsr honestly i feel like wp is a little bit too boring customisation compared to android is no match only reason i stick whit android is because its open source and lot of customisation and so on..

Your call, but you should know that windows phones are pretty locked down/ limited with modification. If that's something you like, then android is best.
I just switched from an iphone to the S3 and I'm not sure I agree with you about the IOS apps looking better. The ones I've used that they both have in common look pretty much the same to me. As a matter of fact, some of the android versions look nicer and have a better user interface.
I have zero interest in the windows phone. Until they can compete with the number and variety of apps available for ios and android, it won't appeal to me at all.
btw, I also have 3 weeks left in my return period and I'm pretty sure I've decided to stick with the S3. Sure it has its bugs and annoyances but so will every phone. The only two things that have kept me from committing 100% to it so far are the battery life problems and the wifi problems. Time will tell.......
I wonder what the new excuse will be when the next version doesn't sell well at all. I believe the old Windows mobile still has more market share. Pretty pathetic.
It's not just Apple and android being entrenched. The os simply sucks comparatively and plenty of people simply do not like metro. Apple has a better walled garden and android has a better large open estate. Microsoft would have done better if they opened all the api and embraced developers. Instead you get a half ass iPhone. GG

On my last phone, the HTC Vivid, all I ever did was flash ROM after flash ROM for no good reason, it felt like a damn crack addiction.

I didn't like the Metro on the WP7, but that WP8 looks alot better better because you can resize them, they seem alot like widgets. Also, now you can use a MicroSD card, have dual-core processors, and have larger screens.
M$ seems to get their act straight this time around, they probably got tired of Apple taking their marketshare.
Metro is great, but having been burned by WebOS, I'd wait a year or two to see if WP8 takes off before investing in an ecosystem. My bet is they take about 7-8% marketshare and go nowhere from there. But who knows.
I think I'd take stock Jelly Bean over WP8 though.
There's a Windows style launcher on the market.

I dont see the potential in windows phone honestly i mean its just plain boring i have tried one ...
At first it felt like a new toy and over the few first day i got bored it lacks customisation that alone worth staying whit android ...
Whit the new jelly bean 4.1 it will be very hard to get beaten by windows or even ios6 ...
The future is android from my point of view...

I don't think it makes sense to ask others to a judgement call for you. Especially on an Android forum.
Re: iPhone and Android "not being quite there"—you do realize that's exactly what every reviewer says about Windows Phone 7?
Windows Phone 8 is a rewrite so I would not have high hopes for the first generation of phones. Also, the demos are made to impress. You should take them with a grain of salt.
Are you kidding me? I had to revert to an HD7 WP7 phone when I killed my Galaxy II two weeks before the Galaxy III launch and for those two weeks I wanted to stick sharp objects into my eye.
Pretty much any app worth having in WP7 costs $$$. The GPS/Nav sucks, searches are done with Bing and dealing with a corporate email account with multiple folders is just about the worst email experience ever on that phone.
I'm done experimenting with WP versions - go ahead and try WP8 when it comes out but Android seems to be a better, more open, more tweakable, more dev friendly ecosystem and I'll stay here...
Don't count Microsoft out. WP7 is a great OS.
I find the question odd seeing as the OS isn't out yet with it's new hardware. But having used WP7 I know that's it's going to be a great update. WP7 is a great OS, and while the phones might be under powered compared to apple and android phones, they still hold their own which says a lot about the optimization of the OS. Kudos to Microsoft for that. The only detracting thing is the apps, but with the new Windows 8 using Metro apps, I can easily see WP8 giving android and ios a run for their money.
While, i dont see myself standing in line for a Windows mobile device. I do enjoy the fact knowing that it will be another direction away from IOS...:good:
I am in agreement with you. We are not in need of another company hell bent on controlling us. For crying out loud why don't these company's see or understand this? I am partial towards Android. I don't mind Apple to much. Well with the exception of the whole let's sue everyone and there mother's attitude. That part pissed me off to no end. And I do hope it turns around and bites them in the ass. I do hope the never go anywhere. Because as much as I do like Android, I like the fact that Android has competition. Google is big enough and has enough money that if all competition were gone. They might just try to pull some Apple/Microsoft crap. I do think that Google and Apple are to hig as is. Just like our governments. And Microsoft is big also. But in a different way. They are like tha big dopey kid on the block. You know, the one that would like to make you his hitch but is to stupid and slow to do so? Lol!

I was like that with my HTC inspire and not so bad with my GSII. Flashed a new one every day or so. It was awful I had to try them all. I'm keeping my GSIII stock for now too. You can customize plenty through market
My bf had WP7 and it was awful. Looked nice but just wasn't practical he hated it, NEVER worked right. He had 4 within the firsts few weeks from button issues(however that was HTC issue)
Windows phones are fast and stable. I used the Samsung focus on mango for several months and I was sold on wp7. Not one single force close or lag. However, my HTC Titan had serious mic issues so I returned it and ended up with my galaxy skyrocket. I do like having the ability to customize with android, and I think the SIII would be worth the contract. The SIII will hold its value and if you decide to go wp8, just eBay or Craigslist your SIII when that time comes. I myself want the SIII but waiting for the right deal.

iOS to android

I just ordered a n4 for my wife. She's been on an 3GS for a couple years now. I'm looking for any advice for making the transition as painless as possible. As the pain would be inflicted on me.
Any advice would be appreciated.

If she likes her iphone, your screwed.
I know how you feel, my wife uses an iPhone also and she won't even touch android. I tried to give her a gs3, she wouldn't even consider it. She says its too big and not as easy to use. I can't understand this but that's the way it is when your married. I gave up, its not worth all the pain. What ever the wife wants, that's what she gets.
Edit: If you haven't synced all her contacts with Google yet, this would be a good time to do it so when she gets her phone you can sign her in to Google and at least her contacts will be there. If she likes games, buy her a few. None of this could convince my wife though. But I wish you all the luck.

GODSPEED.
yea, it will really depend on the person and how she uses her iphone day to day. Tons will blindly follow iOS for no reasonable explanation other than it works or it's beautiful. There are others who maybe willing to try it. For my wife, the main thing she would miss are the games iOS offers. She plays all of those cutesy games that are just not available on Android. Also, she's not in the habit of plugging her phone in every day. Her 3GS lasts a while.
Well as for games I have a ton of them and she still has an ipad so I hope that doesn't prove to be an issue. Also I plan to set it up to look as iphonish as possible. I have several launchers I will try and see if I can't get it be a less painful transition.

Step one:
Don't set up the N4 to her tastes as it will be yours soon.
Step two:
Have a 99 dollar 4S waiting in a drawer for her.
Step three:
Set up your new N4!
Seriously though, this is a weighted question... If she uses an app not on the play store she'll be mad. But if she's not a heavy user, sync all her contacts to Google, buy all the apps she uses on iOS on the play store and set the phone up like her iPhone so it feels familiar. Then let her explore the awesomeness of android. My wife and I had iPhones, I had them all from the original to the 4S and she had up to the 4. Her 4 died and I didn't want to spend 150 bucks on a refurb when the 5 was a few months out, so I got her a HTC Vivid. It was easier for me as her iPhone was constantly having issues, so she was willing to try something different. That vivid actually got me to see the light. I was tired of the jail breaking cat and mouse game, so I sold my 4S and got a Vivid too. Obviously on a N4 now, but the jist of this is to just give her time, she'll like it eventually.

Android isn't even that hard to use, just get her use to the menu and back keys
Tell her to keep things as simple as possible when customizing stuff
Get her use to the app drawer also
The lock screen and how you answer calls
If she gets use to that she will be good, especially the back and menu button, that's what gets people confused the most
Hopes this helped

Get isyncr or double twist so she can transfer media. sync contacts to Google.
My wife uses an N4 and she loves it. Anything in particular you want to ask?
It's a bit easy for me add she had been using an original Gaudy Tab since they came out.

I am not sure I would consider following something that works to be blind. Lots of bugs, broken things, missing features in Android versus iOS. It is getting better fast (but think 4.2 was actually a setback).
OP... the N4 is a two handed device for a woman with smaller hands. Hell, I wear a large sized glove and it is still a two hander for many things with me, where I can reach everything pretty easy with one handed use on an iPhone.
You can sync contacts using Google (a pref in Address Book in the current system). The stock email client is missing a number of features... consider Aqua Mail.
You can sync Calendars using a cool little util named Smoothsync for iCloud, but ToDo's and Notes are a problem. I switched to Evernote and Google Tasks (but unfortunately there is no good Google Tasks client for the desktop.
If she is used to (and likes) the iTunes workflow you're in for even more resistance. There are pseudo-workarounds for Android, but none worth a damn IMHO. Many apps are better on iOS than Android (don't know if it is simply a matter of better dev tools or Android devs are lazy). Don't get me wrong, there are some great apps on Android, but many more on iOS.
If your wife ain't much of a gear head, the things that make Android stand out will be of little value to her, and the things that don't quite work as well as they should will be a constant annoyance. I kind of agree with those that remarked about you inheriting the N4 and having a 4S ready for the wife.
On the other hand, if your wife does not do a lot with her phone, she may not care.
Hope this helps!
torn between android & ios
Im still debating between the two! :silly:
Android, been through every high end device, trading and selling. Loved the nexus devices! I purchased a nexus 4 16gb first day, month later it came in the mail. Played with it for about a day traded for an iphone 5 32gb unlocked. Today I traded the iphone 5 32 for an iphone 5 16gb plus $200. I hardly use 8gb of data :good:
Placed order again for a Nexus 4 and its coming on monday! Do i return it or accept it?
Apple IOS: its very polished! the apps are very nice the ones I use. I hardly use any though. SMOOTH OS!! Would like some customization, JAILBREAK comes Sunday! So that can hold me over. Only downfall I have is being on 2g speeds! EDGE sucks! Although I am on wifi majority of the time it does make it somewhat okay. I am a business user and love the IOS!
Android: I enjoyed it, enjoyed rooting, unlocking, custom roms etc... BUT it GREW OLD to me and a WASTE of time. Half the time I spent was updating roms to fix bugs or other issues. Always trying to find the "perfect" rom! It was fun but wasted too much time. Yes I still like android, nexus 4 I used for a few hours and enjoyed it. SEXY phone and the 4.2 os has come along way. But my worry is with any android device I will want the next newest one. Plus I may go back to constantly checking for new roms and whats the best blah blah blah .... I would hope I could stick with the stock nexus 4 but the WANT to unlock bootloader and flash a custom rom is like crack!
I think that sums it up, ITS JUST A DAMN PHONE!

Yep, android keeps getting better with newer things keeps us hooked... however ios is stagnant but it works so there's nothing wrong with that.
That is why girls love ios, it's simple, they can care less about updates on roms and such. My gf wanted the s3...well that lasted 1 week until she went back to 4s. Even if our androids can fly... girls would be like "it doesn't have this app I like though.... ANDROIDS SUCKS I hate this phone!"

Ain't that the truth. This is the truest freakin thing I've read all day.
1. Receive n4
2. Source a used iPhone 4s
3. Give n4 to wife
4. Take n4 back when she complains
5. Give iPhone 4s to wife
6. Root n4
7. Make money
8. Prosper

The Nexus 4 is a big phone, coming from an iPod touch 4. It does take a lot of getting used to, however, but I couldn't even imagine using the Galaxy Note II as a phone. It feels more like a tablet.
