New to Atrix - Atrix 4G General

Hello!
I just got the Atrix on Saturday. I've upgraded from the iPhone 3GS and I couldn't be happier. The Atrix just feels more free overall.
This is my first open-source phone and I hope I can only say good things about it by the time my contract is up and its time to upgrade.
Speed is excellent, it feels so snappy and quick.
I rooted my Atrix a few hours after purchasing it, installed Titanium Backup Pro and froze some of the stock apps.
When I first got the phone, I was actually disappointed by the dl/ul speeds I was receiving, but that didn't deter me. Today, their was a SBF Mod which unlocks HSPA's radio and now it FLIES.
I love my new phone.
Just thought I'd share my experiences with everyone!

Its great that you are enjoying the phone. Its always nice to hear good things about the Atrix, it was pretty negative around here for a while. Especially nice to hear from an iPhone convert .

Thanks,
I was going to wait out and be an Apple fanboy for the iPhone 5 but I couldn't stand the 3GS and its slowness anymore.
Remembered that my contract was up in a few days, I stopped by the AT&T Store and started playing with it. I was hooked.

Don't forget to install gingerblur or greyblur. I switched from the 3Gs too. The only thing I can say I genuinely miss is having a polished version of monopoly.

I have a 3GS, I just can't figure out if I should wait and see what competes with the iPhone 5 or just get the Atrix now. I'm also thinking about waiting for the Galaxy S ii but who knows when that'll come.
Too many choices!

Iphone is just plain slow. And I come to figure out simple people that can't learn how to use a monster device made on android shun it cause their to stupid to learn it so they revert back to thiet "apple" is better mindframe.

I don't find the Atrix that sexy. I don't like motoblur, the position of the power button, and the low-end camera. I wish at&t was more open to Android devices.
I really want my next phone to be an Android phone, but at&t makes that really tough.

Leave em and get the evo from sprint. I've never been happier

Not up to me on the carrier. It's up to my dad. I don't mind at&t. I've been on at&t since I had my first cellphone back when it was still Cingular.
I just wish there were some better devices, but I'm sure I'd still be happy with the Atrix.

Well android or droi is new to at&t id bet in a cpl months there will be alot more to choose from. Hang in there.

Haha, i must say i miss the 3GS but only for the look of it. I had one of them back in the day, had some rubber case on it and it would always make me smile when i took that case off and saw how shiney the back was. I know it's a stupid thing to like a phone for, but i like the shineyness!!
Good move going to the atrix, while it seems like it's a hibernating bear when it wakes up with gingerbread it's going to be boss level.

It's tough figuring out if I should get the Atrix now, wait for the iPhone 5, or wait until a better Android phone comes out.
I haven't heard of any new ones coming to at&t other than potentially possibly probably the Galaxy S II. I don't know what to do

I was an iPhone owner and I have to admit the phone was awesome when it came out.... I switched over to android though and am just blown away with the OS. That's just my opinion though.
I've been happy with the Atrix.... locked bootloader sucks though. other mods like hdmi hack, mirroring, etc. have kept me entertained for the meanwhile.

I'm a noob to android (obviously) and I keep hearing about the locked bootloader, but what is it exactly?

I think anyone who has gone from an iPhone to an Android has realized how much more useful a smartphone can be when you have more control over what you can change.

I went from a iphone 1 to the Atrix. Needless to say, I am blown away. It's so fast and smooth. I installed gingerblur and it feels even better now. I love being able to do things to my phone like I did with my PSP and computer. Never going back to apple.

A bootloader is a code that is read before an OS starts to run. All Operating systems such asPC, laptop, smartphones, etc. have bootloaders. Bootloaders package the instructions to boot OS kernel
a locked bootloader means it is impossible (at the moment until unlocked) to flash a Custom ROM so we are stuck with pseudo-roms. Meaning we cannot fully customize our phones.
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to install custom Firmware on your Android phone

Atrix vs Bootloader issue ...

My iPhone 3GS is dead, time for an upgrade, wanted to jump in the Android world, I found the spec of the Atrix really interesting but the Bootloader issues is really turning me off ... There is usually so much cool stuff out with new ROMS ... I also tend to stay has far has I can from Carrier's crap, so with that bootloader restriction it's pretty a dead project ATM ... I was wondering if we can hope anything in a short time frame (+- 6 months) ?
Thanks
I'm getting an Atrix soon and as excited as I am, I'd probably recommend getting a Nexus S or an HTC phone. You'll get the flagship Android experience with the Nexus S (or 4G if you can wait) or the HTC Sense experience which is what I originally thought Android was all about. With HTC phones though, if you want you can go with an ASOP ROM and go completely stock, or use the HTC Sense framework which really kicks the user experience up.
I'm a bit of a spec junkie but I surprisingly loved the Sense experience my HTC Desire Z provided me with. I previously owned a Sony Xperia X10 which disgusted me and really made my initial Android experience pretty sour.. missed out on Flash, missed out on updates, missed out on a ton of things and had lots of bugs. Stock Android or something HTC would probably be the way to go with the Atrix's bootloader uncertainty.
The devs on these boards are nothing short of amazing, but Motorola's really got this clamped down. I think being an Android virgin you could easily enjoy the Atrix, but stock Android and Sense are really awesome and I think everyone should experience it at least once.
I got an eLocity A7, I loved the snap of Tegra2 and Atrix specs looked really nice. I've been in the Windows Mobile 6 scene and always hated the junk carriers installed on cell phone. I always enjoyed Sense or Stock (6.5 at the time ...).
I'll stay away from Atrix until I see ROM devs ... the Desire HD seemed really nice but I'm also temped by the iPhone 4gs or 5 with the HTC Flyer combo =)
Thx for the input !

You can do just as much much with the atrix as you could with a jailbroken iphone. Coming from an iphone myself the bootloader is not a big deal. Everyone is jealous of my phone including all my iphone and evo friends. Opening up the bootloader would be extra icing on the cake.

Yes, for the most part you have tons of customization, but without full access you're missing out on kernelsand tthe option ti have a different version of Android all together.

haha that's a great analogy.
I am interested in the Atrix as well, when it comes out. However, I would be interested in flashing a stock gingerbread. As far as I understood the discussion here, the bootloader is closed, which means, if I understand correctly, will avoid the installation of another rom, won't it?

Time to give up

I have had the atrix since launch. Its been replaced 2 times since i got it. I wanna like it. But, I came from the n1. I never got why ppl *****ed so much about android fragmentation. Well now I get it. We have a Outdated OS os on a brand new phone, Some apps don't even work from the market becasue of the dual core. We have a locked bootloader still just like the DX.
This has now driven me back to the iPhone witch ironicly feels like a more open platform.
The DX bootloader has not been cracked and neither will this.
Thanks Moto... THANKS FOR NOTHING. Android may be open but only on a pure Google phone. I say we all boycott anything but pure Google experienced.

LMAO don't be so mellow dramatic.
The OS isn't outdated, it's just not on the bleeding edge of technology with the absolute latest update, my friend. Speaking of bleeding, what's so important and missing from the Atrix that's making your tampon leak all over the place?
If you want to switch to an iPhone, that's all right. We have a great Android community and we all love our Atrix's despite it's minor flaws. No phone is perfect. But it seems like you should genuinely consider sticking to just the Google flagship handsets if you're going to complain so much.
LOL. Good, one less whiner around here.

this phone has been out for a lil over a month and your complaining already? Really??? if you don't like the the device just move on, go back to your N1 that has to be rooted and fully modded just to barely reach half of the power that the Atrix has, there's a difference between constructive criticism and ignorance.....i wish people would quit whining about the bootloader on this phone and actually give it a chance, and be patient while the devs are working on it, what if root never existed??? what would u do then?
In my "opinion" if root never existed, we wouldn't have these complaints about the atrix, and they would realize that it's the most powerful phone to date and possibly this year, think about it motorola set a trend with the atrix, the first dual core phone so now every other company is gonna hop on the bandwagon, so give moto some credit at least

i cant say i agree with most of the post but i do agree with the locked bootloader. right now jailbroken iphone's seem to have more freedom than this device. I love it and with the exception of the camera and the bootloader, i really wouldnt change a thing.
but most of us come from a truly rooted device and flashing roms to suit our own needs. Maybe im just spoiled with android's freedom.
Well I'm back on my n1 not by choice... you guys whining on att have nothing to complain about AT ALL. The bell atrix is really nothing special without sbf or the update... its a tad quicker its a bit smoother but honestly I need an ATT model to even compare.

i can from a epic 4g and a hero and to say the truth i was tried of flashing all different kinds of crap all the time to just make it work.
all that has gone away with the atrix it just great
but i personally think i might get an iphone after my atrix because i have never had one just because i am tired of android because its all the same
it would be a lie if i said i havent been tempted to sell my atrix while the resale value is fairly high. But there are no phones that compete with everything this phone has to offer...
-best battery life ever by far
-amazing screen
-speaker is the best i have had on a phone
-one very important thing nobody seems to have mentioned is the back cover! Anyone notice that the whole back and corners of the phone are covered by a cover that can be purchased from the store??? GREATEST IDEA EVER!!
-once launcher pro is installed UNCHECK the high quality scrolling and the home screens absolutely fly with no lag ever
-i have a 16gb sd card and the phone comes with another 16!
-future proof for the most part
-the notification bar NEVER lags which is much more than i can say for pretty much every android device i have owned
-hdmi output is surprisingly usefull
Whatever lag is noticable is likely due to everything not being optimized for dual core and this high level of screen resolution(like lwp)
I love my Atrix and am patient enough to wait for the boot loader. Some people will say this and that about the Atrix but let's be realistic our phone is just as powerful as a netbook, that's awesome lol

Anyone else slightly losing faith in their atrix?
I just put gingerbread on my cappy and I'm so impressed by the speed. I know I'm comparing froyo to gingerbread but for a dual core Id expect a bit betterr performance. The cappy handles live wallpapers much better than the atrix.
What's keeping me here is the fact that moto seems to actually care, the phone has gotten two updates already, and while second one has lower my phone down, I imagine that will be fixed.
Do you think the atrix is going to "fly" once gingerbread comes out for it? That's what I'm hoping for, or even if moto unlocked the bl

This, I believe, refers to what the OP may be describing.
Smartphones are newer and better all the time. People on here buy every new phone! The Atrix new luster and excitement has worn off, and people are ready to move on to the next big thing(seems to be Galaxy S 2).
Thats the nature of the tech industry, and more specifically the smartphone industry.
I don't think I'd mind waiting 6 months, but also part of me says that 6 months is a long time to get the phone to a smooth point.
It will fly if we get the 2.4 gingerbread optimized for dual cores.
Hey,
I had my Evo for about a year before having to make the decision to switch to AT&T. Here in the USVI, AT&T is just plain out faster, calls are clearer, there are less issues with the service and so on and so forth. I would have kept my Evo until the Evo 3D came out or something.
The Atrix is a beast of a phone and the service is great! I'm satisfied with what I have and from this point on, it can only get better.
Have faith, man.
I never got all those comments about how unresponsive the Atrix is.. mine is super responsive. Granted I come from a Touch HD (WinMo) phone which was friggin' slow as molasses by today's standards so yeah.. but hey the iPhone 4 is supposed to be a snappyness reference yet I constantly see my friends iPhones lag doing some basic thing at some point, and I find my Atrix to be way up there, so i'm not sure about all the complaining.. I don't get it.

-Different Themed Notifications bar with GingerBread Update

The thing that sucks about this phone is mostly just the locked bootloader... sure gingerbread may come, and we finally got the hspa+, but what I really want is to be able to flash custom roms. Until then we're basically crippled and are stuck with clunky and featureless motoblur which barely taps into this things potential.

Lol.. No matter how amazing a device is, there will always be those who criticize it.
The hardware specs and technological innovations implemented on this phone are unlike any phone ever produced. For you to imply that this is not "actually a good phone" makes you appear very ignorant. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way.
I think the main issue here is usability for the average non-tech savvy user.. When they don't understand why the phone isn't doing what they want it to do, they assume it can't or it just sucks.. There are some users such as myself who understand the progression of new hardware & the intricacies involved with getting software to interface correctly with it. We expect to run into issues & focus on solutions rather than complaining.
If you want an environment where everything just works without much input needed from you, consider steve jobs walled garden aka iOS
Otherwise, dig in, try to understand how android & the phone works.. It's only gonna get better.

No one expects to run into issues with a 600 dollar piece of technology. They should, and rightfully so, expect it to work. THe G2x seems to have almost identical specs, and that phone performs much better under all situations. Android isn't about forcing the user to do unnecessary steps to make his phone work on par with any other on the market, its about giving you the opportunity to allow you to do more than whats on the the market. I can say right now, for the past 3 android phones i've boughten, i've never had to do anything special to make them work. Power on. Power off. Done. What makes the atrix different?
I know that sounds like a hateful post, but it's not. I just don't think it's fair for people to say a 600 dollar piece of electronic isn't gonna work right out of the box. I do still love my atrix, the form is great and the fingerprint scanner is very nice. But my concerns are legitimate and aren't solvable by steve jobs.
I'm fed up. Totally disappointed by the phone. The webtop mode remindes me of the carphone idea. Seemed good at the time buy useless shortly after. Hopefuly the galaxy S 2 will be announced tomorrow for att. If not on ordering from UK. This is the best android phone out right now for AT&T. I think AT&T is announcing the samsung infuse tomorrow, not the SGSII, but who knows. I agree, webtop was cool for that first time you show your friends, but i've never used it since. While i have a HUGE grudge against samsung from the captivate debacle, i might try the SGSII but that probably won't hit until july like the cappy.
I switched to an inspire, I love the phone and everything about it, no lag with the latest cm. I'm switching back to the atrix for the ffc and battery life, battery life is abysmal on the inspire.

Getting a 4S. Thanks for all the help!

I've been here for a while with my Inc, and even though I haven't really contributed a lot, I'd like to say thanks to all the people who have helped me through the modding adventure. I learned a lot, and even helped some friends with it. I've grown bored with the OS, though; I'm moving to a 4S so I can be less tempted to make minor changes and more able to enjoy everything. (I'll still jailbreak it, of course.) I'd just like to remind everyone that both options are equally awesome, albeit in different ways, and that there are some of us out here who enjoy both.
Enjoy dual core 3G. I'll let you know how LTE is on a dual core phone.

so, basically, you're buying into exactly what apple is selling: a locked down OS. gotcha. hey man, if that's for you and android is too complicated for ya, then so be it. enjoy your slightly upgraded iphone 4!
Coming from an Inc (or any 2010 Android phone for that matter) I would say that's a huge upgrade in regards to out the box performance.

I'm more buying into an OS other than Android. I've pretty much done everything I'd like to with Android; I've installed tons of roms and tweaks, but nothing gets around that it's all still the same OS. I figure I'll switch over to iOS to enjoy the better app selection and other features, then switch back to Android in a year or two so whatever enhancements made over that time will make it seem fresh to me. I'm not trying to incite flaming here by any means. I'm just offering my opinion and trying to show that there are, in fact, people out there who enjoy the benefits of any type of phone, regardless of brand loyalty.

I figure I'll switch over to iOS to enjoy the better app selection and other features, then switch back to Android in a year or two so whatever enhancements made over that time will make it seem fresh to me.

They had better app selection in 2009, maybe early 2010. In late 2011.. no, plus android has a slew of mini-app-tweaks that Apple would ban if they ever entered their appstore.
I think iPhones are great too, but for non-techsavvy type people. Grandma's, my mom, etc. People who don't know how to really customize their android phone. Android's without customization have bloatware, turd settings, often sluggish, they're just pretty turdly all around. I didn't really love my phone until I rooted it and customized it.
I also like the build of iPhones compared with the majority of Android devices. Anyway personally, I think you'll regret your choice after a few weeks or until you realize all the things iPhone can't do.
I'm right there with you OP. I pre-ordered my 4S the other day. Android has been great (well, cyanogenmod at least) but I don't have the time to install roms anymore to figure out which I like best and I can't handle the bugs in the existing roms. It'll be nice to have a phone that doesn't randomly reboot or activate speakerphone for a change. And I'm tired of carrying around 2 devices for my music/phone. I don't have brand bias, I just know what I need in a phone, and that's consistency.

Yeah I never got that argument. I think in some ways it shows brand bias. Best purchase I made in the last couple of years was some software that stripped the drm off my iTunes music.
You're right, my Inc has a music player. But it doesn't sync with itunes, my ipod dock, or my car. Nor does it have the accessory support that iphone has. The one thing I will miss is native google turn by turn navigation. I'll definitely enjoy the better battery life! That's the one thing that kept me from jumping to an LTE phone instead. But I have enjoyed the community here and some of the hard work a few of the devs have put in.
This thread should have never been created and should be closed. You guys are just gonna set here and go back and forth at each other.
This isn't an Apple discussion sub category.
Let's get back to Android development for our Incredible.
i have a hard time understanding one thing. everyone who is an ios fan keeps touting the app selection over android.
then i ask them - is angry birds free?
/sadface
then i ask them - what are these great apps not available on android?
/one reply - infinity blade
then i ask them - have u ever used easy tether? played a real mmo on ur pc using just ur phone to get internet while camping?
/sadface
the only thing magical about ios is its ability to make people believe it can do more than it does.
"But it doesn't sync with itunes, my ipod dock, or my car."
sure it does. research it. there's apps that do it for free, or apps you can pay for.

I use Isyncr that sync iTunes to my Dinc perfectly

Just upgraded, saying thanks

Loved my Atrix, even though I had to replace it twice, it was great. It made me convert from the iphone to android and I wont go back. Saying thanks to all the Devs for all the support.
Upgraded to the Blue Galaxy S3, and I love this phone. It is the first iphone killer android ever released. Cant wait to start swapping roms!
Good luck and keep us informed!
Glad that you enjoyed the atrix, I myself am waiting for an update before I look into getting another phone. Truth is, I am just starting to tap the potential of this phone with the lap dock and dock unit hooked up to a monitor with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I have only ever used an Alien version from Kenneth Penn (sp?) But I think I am to the point, once ICS comes out and people have a chance to play with it, I may up clock mine and put some other rom on it. I don’t think I will go beyond 1.3 GHz, but I have never even seriously looked into it. I have had the option of an upgrade, but this phone is so fantastic with the FS, peripherals and speed, I have yet to see a phone come close to all that I use this for.
Perhaps a tablet and integrated phone combo will be my next option? IDK the transformer infinity looks to be a decent tablet, and I could use that for work and easily justify it.
Keep us up to date on like and dislikes in comparison to the atrix please!

I really love the large screen, at first it was overwhelmingly large but after a few hours I love it. Also love the 720p res and the crisp vibrant colors. Also its very smooth and fluid with the 2gb of system ram and 1.5ghz dual core.
ICS is really nice on this. I think I will keep the stock rom for a few weeks before flashing a new one.
A week ago I also switched to a Galaxy S III and I'm loving it too. I'm passing the Atrix down to my daughter -- it still has a lot of useful life left in it. The Atrix was also the phone that convinced me to switch from my IPhone. The Atrix really has been a phenomenal phone for me. I'm gonna miss it. Thus far I've determined that the bluetooth radio in the Atrix is better than the S3. But in all other regards I think the S3 is an advancement from Moto's awesome phone from last year. My daughter is gonna love the car and lap docks that I'm also passing down to her. Will be nice when the Atrix gets ICS too.

I can't blame you the development community has really slowed down. Seems like lots of devs have moved on. The two best nonbeta roms (neutrino and Nottach) have not been updated in some time. The cm9 roms are nice but stuck in limbo until official ICS.
I myself went to a OneX but returned due to poor call quality. It was rough coming back to a small grainy screen but for the size the Atrix is a great phone. It carries very well.
I was very close to picking up an s3 but we had some home repair bills around the house (dead AC, blown water tank) and I'm not 100% sure if I want to renew my ATT contract or go with something like Straightalk.
Also went to a White GS3 and its wonderful. Was using CM9 and didn't realize how choppy the Atrix was til I had something better. It was a fun ride but I can't keep waiting for nvidia/motorola to get their **** together.

Sorry not meaning to. This is my first Samsung android and I'm highly impressed. Last Samsung I owned was a blackjack. This s3 is fast!

I really hear you guys.
I might switch to the galaxy nexus, because my phone might have a motherboard problem(really hoping that it doesn't). However I feel terrible about it because this phone has SOOOO much potential, but it's marred by laggy choppy firmware, closed drivers. The atrix is a really great phone , and I wanna see the day when it'll run as smooth, stable, and fast as the the galaxy nexus on jelly bean. I know the atrix can, and then I'll know this phone is truly complete.
And hats off to the atrix dev community, for being one of the most effective on xda, especially with our limited drivers and resources
Well add me to the list. I too went with a GS3. Love it, but I still love this Atrix. I purchased a micro sim adaptor just so I could continue to use this baby. It actually feels faster and my GS3 is over clocked to 1890mhz. Still rocking the stock rom rooted with nothing frozen for now. Battery is no where near what I get with my Atrix, but like I said ...early stages of modding the Galaxy. I still read the forums when time allows and appreciate the dev community. You have all been great and a stepping stone to the path of making this phone more then the first dualcore power house that it is. Thanks!
